Rate this book
The king is dead.

Assassins strike in the dead of night, decimating the royal family.

Prince Cadeyrn survives with the help of his knight companions, but is too late to save his kin. In the carnage that remains he finds his brother’s pregnant widow. However, surviving is not enough to keep them safe. Prince Cadeyrn is blamed for the massacre of his family and–determined to save his sister and her unborn child from their enemy–is forced to flee from the scheming Duke Fiacra.

In the midst of their escape, the desperate fugitives encounter Éabha, a noble lady who values her freedom more than her title. But the princess and child’s survival must remain hidden at all costs.

Éabha is given a choice; join them in exile or die.

Branded traitors, and hunted across the kingdom, allies are in short supply. Together, the six companions begin their quest to prove their innocence and reclaim the throne.

But Duke Fiacra seeks far more than just the crown. He has released a power long held dormant within the land.

A power that will make him unstoppable.

✨ ARC Review – Vestige of The Crown by E.C. Cardey 📖

Firstly, a huge thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read an e-ARC of this book! I'm posting this review a few days after the release (life, right?), but I couldn’t let this story go unacknowledged.

Vestige of The Crown completely pulled me in—and that’s saying a lot, especially since it’s written in third person. I usually gravitate toward first-person narratives, but this book reminded me just how immersive and compelling third-person storytelling can be when it’s done right.

From the very beginning, I was plunged into a world rich with violence, mystery, epic quests, royal politics, and a touch of romance. While the romantic subplot was a nice addition, it never overshadowed the main story—which kept moving at a great pace and had me hooked the entire time.

Let’s talk about the characters: Eabha, the FMC, was phenomenal. She’s strong, intelligent, and layered in a way that made her stand out. She quickly became my favorite, and I appreciated how her strength was portrayed—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well.

The book is told through multiple POVs, including that of the villain, which added so much depth and intrigue.

A quick note on character names: Yes, this is high fantasy, so expect some unique and hard-to-pronounce names. I did need a character chart to keep track of everyone at first, but honestly? That’s part of the charm of epic fantasy. You enter a whole new world and have to grow accustomed to its people, politics, and geography—it’s part of the fun! Also, the chapters are pretty short so the story is constantly being developed by multiple characters.

And now… those final chapters. I’m still reeling. I did NOT see that coming. The last few chapters absolutely wrecked me in the best way. Twists, heartbreak, shock—it was all there.

If you’re into immersive world-building, multiple POVs, a strong FMC, and stories that keep you on your toes until the very end, Vestige of the Crown should definitely be on your TBR.

ARC Review
5⭐/2🌶️

👑Vestige of the Crown - Book One: A Violent Beginning👑

This book is any fantasy reader’s dream! It starts off real strong with betrayal, treason, and pure heartbreak for the prince and his close friends; his most trusted knights.

They are joined by the prince’s sister-in-law and a noble lady, who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. They become companions of convenience and a necessity in order to ensure the last remaining heir of the kingdom survives to one day claim back the throne.

There is immense worldbuilding while the six companions flee and travel throughout the kingdom on their epic quest.

I loved the different characters and their emotional growth throughout the book as we see how they deal with grief and hope for a future. The multiple POVs, including that of the villains, was quite a refreshing change from other books that generally only show a select few. It presented a more well rounded account of the story from all perspectives. This also provided the reader with information before the different characters became aware of said information themselves.

When it becomes clear what the Duke’s motive is for the betrayal it immediately ups the stakes and makes survival even more critical. Not just for their own lives but also for the whole kingdom.

There is some mild spice as a subplot between two of the companions, but it does not take away from the main story or become a main focus. The FMC is a total rockstar in my opinion!

If you love high fantasy that has a vast array of characters, themes, and tropes then this will not disappoint you! I am very much looking forward to the next book and to see how this fantasy series will evolve! I can see this becoming really big!

👑Thank you E. C. Cardey for this ARC👑

What to expect:
👑Family Ties + Found Family
🗡️High Stakes
👑Multi POV
🗡️Betrayal/Treason
👑Epic Quests
🗡️Bad A$$ FMC
👑A Prince on the Run
🗡️Magic
👑Forced Proximity

I am utterly gutted by that ending, I am heartbroken but also have hope for the next book and cannot wait for it to come out. This book was beautifully written and if you’re looking for your next high fantasy adventure with LOTR vibes with a mismatched crew on an adventure to escape their own death tougher than this book is for you.

You follow this group of 6, a third born prince, 3 of his knights, his younger brother’s pregnant wife and a lady from another kingdom who works with horses, as they escape an assassination attempt that is spun so that they committed it and are the only remaining members of the royal family. They lead off on an epic journey together to find a place for them to recover and rebuild and figure out how to get back their kingdom. There were so many heart shattering twists and deaths that I cried more times than I could count in the best way. This book made me feel for them deeply and grow to care for each of the complex characters and their relationships with one another.

The storytelling of this made me feel like I was dropped right into their world, following multiple POVs, including some of the villains, to understand motivations and inside each characters mind and also reveal some hidden truths about their kingdom! I couldn’t put this book down once I started and while it was long I also couldn’t believe when it ended the cliff I ended up on now waiting for the next book. There’s some romance as well among the traveling party that includes longing and tensions and lots of witty banter. I also enjoyed though devastating sometimes the battle scenes and how they all worked together to escape so many times. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next one! Overall my rating 4.8/5!

Thank you to the author for the gifted ARC, all opinions given are my own!

Wow. This story has the makings of a LOTR level storyline about betrayal, power struggles, friendship, loyalty and unyielding love.

The writing immediately captured my attention. It is descriptive, and immerses you fully into the world. You aren’t overwhelmed with history but you get glimpses of what you know will be revealed down the road.

These characters capture your heart. This band of survivors thrust together on the run. This group of men who have been together their whole lives, and two women each reluctant additions for their fellowship. They all have suffered so much, and continue to lose more and more as they go. Things that should break them. But they don’t let each other give up. They keep fighting for one another even when they no longer want to fight for themselves. The loyalty between them is nothing short of awe inspiring. The sacrifices they make for one another, it is all encompassing. The unrequited love, lost love, familial love, grief love and companionship love continues to be what drives them.

The villains are people you will fully despise.

I cannot put into words well enough the way this story made me feel, but I know I will be a dedicated reader for the full series.

It was an honor to receive an eARC from the author and I will be rushing to get a physical copy as soon as it is released !

Tropes:
- betrayal & court politics
- Enemies to lovers
- Loyalty & friendship
- Slow burn
- Yearning
- Sacrifice

Favorite Quotes:
- She would rather encounter a wolf alone in the woods than an unknown man.
- Until one day, they would return. They would have their revenge, and see their queen take her rightful place on the throne.

📖ARC Review📖
Vestige of the Crown by E.C. Cardey

"We cannot doubt ourselves, or our mission. To consider defeat as a possibility is to make it so; to invite it into our hearts and minds. With so many enemies pitted against us, all we can do in times such as these is believe in ourselves, and our companions, and push forward."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

First of all, thank you very much @e.c.cardey.author for sharing with me an ARC of this 500+pager novel! It was a long book, and it was definitely a long journey for the MCs as well! 🙌🏼

I have to say, there was never a dull moment on this novel - considering its length. Something is always happening - may it be romantic scenes that makes my heart beat faster, or intense fighting scenes that makes me hold my breath, or just those random funny moments that makes me laugh and giggle.

As for the characters, I mean, I didn’t expect to get attached to all of them! Even to those who appeared in just a couple of chapters (ehem-Lady Mairwen-ehem)! And even the horses - Ohhh I’m amazed that they are their own character! I get to love them, cry for them and just want to hug them too! 🥹 Afanen is so adorable, her tantrums always makes me laugh 🤣

Lady Eabha and Sir Faolan would have to be my favorite! Their relationship shifts from enemies to lovers to enemies again then to lovers again. But I find myself really rooting for them!

There were so many moments in this book that broke my heart, that I can’t believe that’s happening. But one thing is for sure, this book, and the characters in ir taught me that resilience and pure belief that things will happen, can actually make it happen. Because there is no choice, believing otherwise is just not acceptable.

So, if you’re looking for a book where the journey is filled with unpredictable circumstances, epic battles, and remarkable relationships in all different aspects (familiar, friendship and romance) then THIS is the book for you! Already available in Amazon! Check it out! 😉

Words will never do justice to what a spectacular journey this book took me on. It has everything you could ever want in a fantasy novel, multiple POV, world-building, character development, an evil bad guy, death, destruction, ruin, heart in your throat scenes, tears in your eyes and a little bit of magic and romantic tension.

Quite simply, it's breathtaking.

A kingdom lays in unrest and turmoil. Its entire royal family slaughtered - the only survivor, Prince Cadeyrn and his three most trusted Knights, now on the run, blamed for the deaths.

The man who sits on the throne as regent has his own twisted agenda, and with swift brutality, he is bringing his plan to fruition. The Kingdom's subjects have no idea what evil is about to befall the land.

The characters are fleshed out, their back-stories and pain vivid, the overarching plot is teased out as the story naturally unfolds while you read. And the way E.C. Cardey makes you care about everyone (including the horses) is incredible.

If you devour:

- found family
- quests
- injuries and loss
- hate to tolerance to love
- who did this to you
- a kingdom in turmoil
- magic subplot
- multiple POV
- on the run
- banter
- a competent and brilliant FMC
- epic and complex fantasy books

Then please don't pass this one by. I read this one prior to the official release date.

What an epic adventure ❣️ This is a violent beginning indeed..
Vestige of the Crown is a magical story that will make you cry, laugh, longe, cry again and wish you were able to help them.
With a fateful betrayal to the Crown, three knights, one prince, a princess and a "mistress of the horses" are on the run as traitors. Soon they will learn that there aren't many allies along their journey and will have to endure awful truths.
At first, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the many character POVs, but then I started enjoying it, being able to see the actions and thoughts of everyone, even the "bad guys".
In a greyish world where survival is tough even for a knight and harder still for a woman, our fugitives found friendship, kindness, and even love amid the chaos.
With a rollercoaster of emotions, I felt it all: the loss of the people left behind and the loss of what would never be 💔 I absolutely loved all the banter and all the despair.. this story destroyed me!
Thank you E.C. for the ARC and this beautiful heartbreaking, as we readers like it.. and I'll be waiting for the next book, truly I'm ready for it right now!
Here are the amazing tropes:
📃 Multiple POVs
👑 Knights & Royalty
⚔️ Epic Sword Fighting
💔 Betrayals
🥀 Forbidden Love
❤️‍🔥 Longing & Yearning
☠️ Ruthless Villains
❤️‍🩹 Found Family

Oh my gosh! This book started with a bang & lives up to it's title - definitely a violent beginning.
Vestige of the Crown follows Caderyn - the only surviving prince after the assassination of the royal family. Along with his 3 loyal nights, his sister-in-law and Éabha, he sets out on an action-packed, high-fantasy adventure to reclaim his throne and restore his kingdom!

Honestly, this book was so good. It had me cheering, laughing & crying. The found family between the main characters was well written & you could see the love they shared. There was some enemies-to-lovers romance in there that I really enjoyed & seeing the development of that was lovely.

Need a minute for the lovely, Éabha. She was such a likeable FMC, she was funny, badass and caring. She may not have chosen the journey but boy did she smash it. I loved her! The banter between her & Faolan was good. I also enjoyed seeing Éabha find her feet and stand up for herself!

This is a multi POV story, which started out as a tad confusing but I was used to it after a while & really enjoyed seeing the story unfold from different characters point of views!

The ending had me hooked & it has been set-up well for a sequel! A smashing book & definite recommend for any fantasy fans out there!

From the very beginning, “Vestige of the Crown” is an action-packed adventure with no slow starts, which I absolutely love! The story kicks off with an assassination and keeps the momentum going, gradually revealing the backstory as you read. A diverse team comes together to rescue a kingdom overtaken by a power-hungry sociopath and his son.

The narrative unfolds from multiple perspectives, yet it remains cohesive and clear. Each main character is richly developed, highlighting their strengths and vulnerabilities, providing an insight into their personalities and revealing their crucial roles in the story. This vivid character portrayal makes it all the harder to deal with when someone doesn’t survive to the end.

The conclusion to this portion of the tale is bittersweet, offering both heartbreak and hope for the future of Dubshlaine. “Vestige of the Crown” evokes strong emotions and explores powerful themes throughout, so be sure to check the warnings before diving in. I’m sad the story has ended, as this book is exceptionally well-written, making it difficult to put down.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, world-building, a touch of spice, and a strong pace. I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next instalment in the series.

Thank you for the opportunity to be an ARC reader E.C Cardey !

I don’t even know where to start and I don’t mean that negatively. It’s such a good story. E.C Cardey’s descriptive way of storytelling and multi povs made me able to really feel like I was along for the journey. The story immediately begins with our MCs barely escaping their death and going on the run. We then follow them as they travel across the land to find a safe place to recover and take back their kingdom. I fell in love with all the characters the story progressed and couldn’t pick a favorite. Well most of them.. 😒 There’s no doubt about who I hate the most. I was so absorbed into their journey that I was still up at 430 a.m staring into the void after having my heart ripped out multiple times throughout. Then I got to the ending and had it utterly destroyed!!! Why?!?! I can’t even begin to imagine where book 2 will take us and what’s next for our MCs on their journey.
If your vibe is…

🗡️Some romance
🗡️betrayal
🗡️a quest

I received this as an ARC and was absolutely swept away by it. Set in a classic medieval style world where magic has been locked away, a young Prince and his three knight best friends are forced to run when the slaughter of his family is pinned on him by a power-hungry duke and his sadistic son. The strength of this story is its characters - I fell in love with the trio of knights and their prince, their found-family brotherhood making me choke up more than once. The women caught up in the struggle were also written with so much depth and strength, I absolutely adored them, especially Eabha and her fiery and capable personality.

If you love having your heart torn still-beating from your chest and then stomped on, this is the book for you. E.C. Cardey makes it inevitable that you will fall in love with her characters, and then proceeds to put them through the most harrowing and desolate circumstances possible. Definitely be strategic about where you read it so you don’t find yourself bawling in public.

Overall, an incredible read! Cannot wait until the next book!

Vestige of the Crown hurt me, healed me, and hurt me again! This story is raw and devastating at times, but also full of hope, loyalty, and the kind of bonds that make you believe in found family. I grew so attached to this group of survivors that every twist felt personal, and I cried more than once along the way.

What really stood out to me was how immersive the writing was—I felt dropped straight into the chaos without ever being overwhelmed. The betrayals sting, the villains are chilling, and yet it’s the moments of quiet connection and unyielding loyalty that stayed with me the most. This is a story of survival, sacrifice, and love in all its messy forms, and I know I’ll be thinking about it long after that brutal cliffhanger.

Wow! Where to begin? This book was absolutely fantastic, I could not put it down!

I became immersed into the story very quickly which doesn’t happen very often for me with fantasy books, it usually takes a while. I very quickly became invested in the characters.

Cael and Faolans relationship is brilliantly humorous and had me chuckling often. I loved how all of the characters relationships faltered and developed throughout the book too.

This book has everything you need in a fantasy story - adventure, love, humour, amazing characters, distress, villains and heartbreak.

I cannot wait to see where the author takes this story in the next book - the possibilities and potential is staggering!

I 100% recommend reading this book if you are fantasy book lover, you will love it.

Vestige of the Crown broke my heart, put it back together and broke it al over again with ruthless cruelty… and I loved it. This is a story of survival, of leveling your feelings aside and try to survive with all you have, and I don’t mean that as a metaphor, or maybe a little as well. This group of individuals go through so much in such a small period of time that is hard to understand how they can function and your get a perspective from every single one
Even the villain. How good is that?
I could not put this book down, and you bet I am waiting anxiously for what happens next in this story

I could not have loved this book more!! I'm in the midst of a Sarah J Maas binge (I'm late to that party, but I've been an avid fantasy reader forever) so while it took me a couple of chapters to get into it and figure out the characters, I am in awe. The character arcs and the world building are incredible. The scenes of tension had me staying well up past my bedtime to make sure everyone was going to be ok! I did NOT see the ending coming, it hit me hard! E.C's depth of understanding of horsemanship, as well as relationships is put to good use and most things felt tied up with a nice bow... I'd really like to read book two and find out what happens now please😂

ARC review

One of my favourite books this year so far. 5 stars with no doubt.

Love the characters and plot development; I can't stop reading from the very first page. I love Éabha, a strong FMC, capable, autonomous, wise and friendly.

Court traitors, a massacre, an heir that escapes with his only friends and family alive and a noble woman that gets involved by chance. And magic that is coming back to the reign. Well written, a wonderful world building, I need to know more about the magic in the next book(s).

I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants more, we need to read part 2!

first thing i was to say about this book is just wow. it was a pretty big one, a little over 900 pages in the ebook version, but it didn’t feel like it dragged on. so much happened and good lord they go through a lot. from assassins, to a scheming duke, to an ancient power that’s being released from the land, it’s just so much. this is absolutely a violent beginning. i cannot wait for book two !!

Vestige of the Crown was amazing! An epic high fantasy full of everything I love—sweeping worldbuilding, political and royal intrigue, betrayals, battles, and characters whose journeys kept me hooked from start to finish.

The story balances fast-paced action with deep character growth, and every twist pulled me in further. It has that perfect blend of adventure, magic, and danger that makes high fantasy so addictive.

I’m absolutely heartbroken to have finished and now have to wait for book two 😭. The ending left me desperate for answers—if you know, you know 👀.
