She disappeared. Thirteen years later, her voice returns.
Grace Franklin was just a child when her big sister Zoe vanished. The family never called the police. Never looked for Zoe. They said she was troubled; that she didn’t want to be found. Now, Zoe’s remains have been discovered at the bottom of a ravine—just ten miles from home. A tragic accident. A drunk teen losing control of the car. Except there’s a Zoe’s story. Not the version Grace remembers. Not the one her family clung to. But something else—darker, closer, and far more difficult to explain.
And once the tape starts playing, there’s no turning back.
Someone lied. Someone knows more than they’re saying. And the truth about what happened to Zoe is darker than Grace ever imagined.
Taut, heartbreaking, and deeply unsettling, She Left Us is a haunting psychological thriller about the lies that hold families together—and the truths that tear them apart. Perfect for fans of Lucinda Berry, Stacy Willingham and Mary Kubica.
This book was amazing!! It hooked me from the beginning and didn't let go until the very end. The story builds nice and steady, keeping you turning the pages too find out what happens next. Once the end comes so do the OMG moments that finish an already great book that much better. I totally thought I had it all figured out more than once and it took all the best parts and merged them into one great ending. If you want a suspense that grips you right from the beginning and doesn't let go until the end this is just what you're looked for, but be warned you going to binge read it in 1 or 2 sessions.
This book gave me goosebumps and broke my heart in places. The plot is layered, complex, and rooted deeply in the kind of truths that unfold behind closed doors. It’s an unflinching look at relationships, choices, and the human cost of silence.
The characters are beautifully developed. You don’t just read about them, you feel them. Their flaws, fears, and quiet strengths stay with you long after you’ve finished the last page.
This book started out decent but then about 1/4 of the way in it was horrible. I had to make myself read it. I’m not sure I read the same book as everyone else.
The description of this book is very fitting - it is a very twisty psychological thriller that leaves you yearning to learn what happens next. Easy to read, with plot twists you won't see coming. Equal measures heart breaking and infuriating, it's hard to put down.
Wow! I love a good thriller and this physiological thriller had me all in, read within 24 hours. When a story captures you, having you sad you have to put it down you know you got a great story. Many POVs that included the victims voice through a found recording. Beware there are trigger warnings, however it creates a powerful story that pulls at your heartstrings.
Very good. The storyline kept me intrigued. The ending had a few good twists and turns. First book I've read by this author and I will be finding more.
Hmmmm I don’t think I read the same book as everyone else apparently did. The writing was juvenile, the plot was weak, and the villains were badly written. The main characters were okay I guess but there wasn’t much to them. It felt like some weird after school lifetime movie I would have watched in the 90s. To each their own I guess 🤷🏻♀️
Thirteen years after Grace's sister disappears from their family home, a car is found in a nearby ravine with what looks to be Zoe's remains, showing that she died shortly after she left.
As Detectives Calder and Morales connect with the family, they find some disturbing information. While Zoe left the home all those years ago, a police report of a missing person was never filed, and the family never made any attempt to locate her - in fact, by the looks of the family home, they erased her. Her room has been remodeled, her personal items gone.
Zoe's parents are distraught by the news of their oldest daughter, but describe an unruly child who came and went as she pleased, sneaking out at all hours, drugs and alcohol... in their mind, Zoe had left long before she left.
But Zoe's younger sister, Grace, remembers a kinder, gentler version of her sister - and when a tape shows us that Zoe has left a message for Grace, Zoe tells the story of what happened and why she left.
Is what Zoe is sharing true? Zoe always had a knack for telling a great story... and was Zoey's accident just that? Or was it suicide... or...
Was it murder?
This book gave me vibes of 13 Reasons Why (have you read this? It's so good - better than the tv series). Briefly, 13 Reasons Why is about a girl who commits suicide but has mailed a set of 13 tapes to her classmate Clay, about why she did it. As the book goes on, you see what led to Hannah's decision.)
What She Left Us takes from 13 Reasons Why is the tape left behind that tells Zoe's side of what brought her to the decision to leave, unfolding a tale of neglect, verbal abuse, feelings of unworthiness, but again - is it true? As this is Zoe's story.
Engaging read. As I dug into the characters, the book mostly focused on Grace's reactions to what she is hearing and what she can remember of their childhood, and a rewrite of her own history.
While there are a few loose ends that I tend to pick at .... overall a good, fast read that you will not want to put down.

This one was a slow burn… and not always in a good way.
The premise had so much potential. A missing sister, a body finally found, and recordings in her own voice unraveling the truth? That setup had me ready for something haunting and gripping. But the execution just didn’t quite live up to it for me.
The pacing was very slow. There were multiple times I caught myself losing focus… and yes, I actually fell asleep reading it more than once. It just didn’t have that momentum or tension I expect from a psychological thriller.
Everything about it felt a bit middle-of-the-road. The characters were fine, but none of them really stood out or made me feel deeply invested. The plot moved along, but without much urgency, and the twists… unfortunately, I saw most, if not all, of them coming before they even happened. That took away a lot of the impact and made the overall experience feel pretty predictable.
The ending wrapped things up, but it didn’t leave me with that lingering “wow” or unsettled feeling I was hoping for.
⭐️ 3 stars — not terrible, but nothing really stood out. A decent idea that just didn’t fully deliver for me.
This was one of those books that after you're finished, you need to just stop. Look at a wall, and process. There were so many directions this could have taken. I suspected, but rationalized my suspicion was just too awful. There was no way THAT person could have done it, even if that's where my brain went.
My biggest issue with this book was all the pausing in between 'episodes'. These people were dying to know what happened, and there was that little tape basically gift-wrapped for them, chronicling Zoe's life. And they took sooo long to listen to the entire thing. Some of the pauses were due to legit interruptions, and I guess I can understand how emotional it was, especially for the family. But I feel like the detectives would have made copies and had the tape analyzed and listened to thoroughly within the first several hours of them being aware of it. It took what 2 days to get through a few hours of tape? That to me was frustrating.
Other than that, I did very much enjoy reading this, and I look forward to seeing more from this author.
Grace’s sister Zoe disappeared years ago, and what really got me was how her family basically just… accepted it and moved on. No real searching, no answers. Then years later, Zoe’s remains are found, and everything starts unraveling, especially once her voice comes back into the story.
This gave me major something is seriously wrong with this family vibes. I was constantly questioning everyone and trying to figure out what actually happened vs. what people wanted to believe.
It’s definitely more of a slow, emotional, psychological read than a fast thriller, but it worked. There’s a lot of heavy stuff. The family dysfunction, secrets, and that feeling of not being able to trust anyone.
Some of the twists I saw coming, but others still hit, and the ending left me just sitting there like…wow.
Overall, it’s dark, messy, and a little heartbreaking. If you like family centered thrillers with unreliable truths and buried secrets, I’d definitely recommend it.
This is a new author that I enjoyed reading. I enjoyed this author's ability to pull me into the character's world with ease and kept me turning pages to the end. This is a story about family and the secrets that can keep them together but also tear them apart. This is a well written story about Grace and how her big sister Zoe's disappearance. This is a fast paced, engaging story where the characters bring the thriller to life. The twist and turns had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. I enjoyed the characters and how supportive they are of each other. They are connectable, relateable and just great characters. I enjoyed watching the plot growth throughout the story that made the story easy and entertaining to read. This is one you don't want to miss. I highy recommend this book.
This book completely hooked me from the start. I picked it up thinking I’d read a few chapters and ended up flying through it in two days because I couldn’t put it down.
What really stood out to me was the focus on family dynamics. The mystery itself is gripping, but the emotional tension within the family is what makes the story feel so intense. The complicated relationships, the unspoken expectations, and the way certain roles form within families added a lot of depth to the story. Watching those dynamics slowly unravel as the investigation moves forward kept me turning the pages.
I also loved how the story explores how secrets and silence can shape people over time. Every new piece of information changes how you see the characters and their past, which made the mystery even more engaging.
The pacing was fast, the tension stayed high, and I genuinely found myself staying up way too late because I needed to know what happened next. If you enjoy character-driven mysteries with complicated family relationships and a story that keeps pulling you forward, this one is definitely worth picking up!!
What an absolutely heartbreaking story this was. She Left Us is the story of a family who's daughter walked out on them thirteen years earlier and told them she was never coming back. They didn't look for her, and actually removed her from their lives.
Thirteen years later, her body is found, and it is discovered that she died shortly around the time she left. This is her story. Told between the memories of her younger sister, and her mom and dad and a recoding that she made shortly before her death.
This story not only kept me on the edge of my seat, but also kept me furious at how the adults in her life could fail her so badly. This book is fiction, but sadly this storyline is perpetuated daily in our society.
She Left Us is one of those stories that pulls you in fast and refuses to let go. It’s gripping from the start, with this heavy emotional undercurrent that just keeps building. I found myself completely invested in the characters and their pain, even when I almost didn’t want to be. It’s the kind of read where you sit there thinking, “Why am I doing this to myself?” but you physically cannot stop turning the pages.
And that ending… wow. The twist hit hard—like, stare-at-the-wall-for-a-minute kind of hard. It completely reframed everything and left me feeling shocked and honestly a little heartbroken.
If you’re in the mood for something intense, emotional, and unforgettable, this one delivers. Just maybe don’t go in expecting to feel okay afterward.
I really enjoyed reading She Left Us. The characters are well written, and the story is dark and heartbreaking, but deeply engrossing. Just when you think you know the truth, something else comes out and leaves you guessing again. The ending was a shock, but inevitable; the kind of thing you suspect, but never want to believe would happen. It's a hard book to read, and a harder book to stop reading. If you like dark, sad psychological thrillers that keep you guessing until the last page, I highly recommend She Left Us.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a wonderful rollercoaster ride this read has been. So many twists and turns ups and downs. Just when you think you have it figured out, wham plot twist. It doesn't stop there, this book will keep you jaw on the floor till the very last page. The End! You will find mystery, murder, family secrets all in one. You'll meet lots of characters, everyone of them has an important part in this book. Pay attention to the chapter title. Switches from today to 13 years ago and back and forth. You will definitely not be bored. Crave out your whole day because you'll want to read till the end. So buckle up for the ride.
Wow! Just wow! My mind is blown. This a first-time author for me and it definitely won't be the last either. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. The plot was well thought out and well developed. I thought the format was creative. Rather than a diary, we have cassette tapes. It made for an interesting read. The characters were well developed and easily relatable. This story is full of angst, twist and turns you'll never see coming. I felt I was right there on the edge of my seat with the family. The one character I couldn't really understand is Josh. He did a complete flip that left my head spinning. There was one main question the story left me with; however, I won't ask it because I don't want to give anything away. How the author came up with this storyline is beyond me. It's an emotional rollercoaster ride of emotions. I read this book in one sitting. It will definitely be added to my Kindle library!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.
“She Left Us” is a gripping psychological thriller centered on Grace Franklin, whose sister Zoe vanished when they were children. The family never sought help, claiming Zoe was troubled and didn’t want to be found. Years later, Zoe's remains are discovered, but a tape reveals a darker truth that contradicts Grace’s memories and her family's narrative. As Grace uncovers the lies surrounding Zoe’s disappearance, the story explores the haunting impact of family secrets and the unsettling nature of truth. This taut and heartbreaking tale kept me on edge
If you like psychotic and twisty! This is the book you need to read. Turns out that a troubled daughter with all her teen issues is a result of a twisted mother and plot. This is so twisty it made my head spin. The characters are written about with clarity and description. I can visually see them in my mind when the author describes them. The book is built on a crazy mother and a father who stands by her. They are wealthy and put together. The perfect family until the tape is revealed. Hang on to your hat. This is a really good one.
WOW. Just…WOW! This book was a page turner! Compelling. Horrifying. I can’t imagine what pain Zoe was in, to have the on person in the world that should love you unconditionally turn on you and destroy you so easily. I can’t imagine what kind of narcissistic psychopath you would have to be to do that to a child. This is a powerful book. It demonstrates the power of words and the damage that can be done with them. I loved the ending. So fitting. Calista Arden, you have written a masterpiece.
You will need to clear a few hours to read this in one sitting.
How can a person sleep at night with the terror' s she lived with . A person deserves respect & someone who cares. Grace just wanted her sister at her wedding. Who knew how the story would unravel. The twist I thought I knew, but was not correct. I can't wait to read more by this author. She keeps the story fasted paced til the very end .
Grace's older sister Zoey walked away from the house (and family) ten years ago due to teen angst amongst a mother-daughter strained relationship. At least, that's what everyone thought, until the police notify the family of Zoey's remains, long undiscovered, found in a car at the bottom of a ravine. Grae and her brother are determined to find out what happened to their sister, but can they live with the answer?
So much happening to one young person in a short amount of time. We all have stories of our young lives. Some where things got rough, hard, maybe near impossible. Our world wasn't worth it. You need someone to believe in you, to love you, to tell you everything will get better but sometimes there is no one. That is the saddest part. Great read that may even touch a part of yourself.
Her sister disappeared 13 years ago but she had always been told they were damaged and just left. Now their voice is loud when her body is discovered and the truth is very different to what she had been told. A dark story which will keep you hooked until you know the truth I received an advance copy from hidden gems and a thrilling read
Grace big sister Zoe left 13 years ago for a better life or so she thought. When grace hired a PI to find her sister, the sister is found dead in a ravine not far from the family home. Grace’s picture perfect family shatters as she finds out the truth about Zoe’s death. This was a great book! It was difficult to put down and, even though it was 300 pages, was a quick read.
