4.5/5 ⭐️ This is my first Karen King novel (tbh I hadn’t even heard of her before this!) and it was a cute little book! Easy to read, heartwarming and the characters were all loveable in their own way. The story was not what I expected based on the description and cover, but it was perfect as it was.

It was well paced and I was never bored, it was quirky and funny, but also heart warming and relatable.

This is the perfect beach read, and I would love to see this become a movie!

I received this ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

3.5* A sweet, charming, humorous palate cleanser that features three female single, senior citizens and one single man, also a senior citizen. All of them are facing immediate, necessary changes in their living arrangements. They wind up living together and becoming dear friends with one another.

My only real complaint is that there were redundancies, usually about how the one-time strangers were becoming more like family.

I’m officially ready to move into a house-share if these are the vibes.

Karen King has a real knack for writing "golden years" fiction that doesn’t feel patronizing or slow. Growing Old Disgracefully follows Nancy, who is essentially forced into becoming a landlady after her husband does a runner with their retirement fund.

What follows is a brilliant "found family" story featuring Jackie, Phyllis, and Marvin.

The Characters: Marvin (the aging rocker) is a scene-stealer, but Nancy’s personal growth is the real heart of the story. Watching her move from "devastated wife" to "rebellious spirit" was so satisfying.

The Prose: It’s light, conversational, and flows effortlessly. King handles the heavier themes of financial betrayal with a deft, witty touch.

The Verdict: A fast-paced, laugh-out-loud read that proves aging isn't about fading away—it's about finally having the guts to cause a little trouble.

Growing Old Disgracefully is an absolute delight — a story that embraces the glorious chaos of later life with humour, warmth, and a wonderfully rebellious spirit. Karen King has such a knack for capturing that moment when everything you thought was settled suddenly tilts, and you’re forced to reinvent yourself whether you planned to or not.

Nancy is instantly lovable. One minute she’s preparing for a cozy retirement with her husband, and the next she’s left penniless and alone, staring down a future she never imagined. Her solution — taking in lodgers — feels sensible enough at first, until Jackie, Phyllis, and Marvin arrive and turn her quiet home into something far more unpredictable. They’re eccentric, chaotic, and utterly endearing, and watching Nancy’s world expand (and occasionally explode) around them is pure joy.

What I loved most is how the book celebrates the idea that life doesn’t stop being fun just because you’ve hit a certain age. In fact, for Nancy and her new housemates, it seems to be just getting started. There’s a lovely sense of camaraderie between them, a reminder that friendship can arrive at any stage of life and completely transform it. Their antics are hilarious, but there’s a gentle emotional thread running beneath the laughter — a story about rediscovering confidence, letting go of expectations, and allowing yourself to be surprised again.

The tone is uplifting without ever feeling saccharine, and the humour lands with that perfect blend of cheekiness and heart. By the end, you can’t help but root for Nancy as she steps into her own wild side, proving that “growing old disgracefully” might just be the best way to do it.

Warm, funny, and full of life, Growing Old Disgracefully is a charming reminder that it’s never too late to shake things up and find joy in the unexpected.

Make yourself a cuppa, or pop open a bottle of fizz and settle in with Karen King’s latest, Growing Old Disgracefully. The four main characters, Nancy, Jackie, Phyllis, and Slate, are all in their 60s and, through their life experiences, sparkling dialogue, abundant humor, and compassion, show all of us it’s never too late to live your best life or, as George Eliot said, “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” This delightful story is about picking up the pieces after heartbreak, finding your “people,” and second chances in both life and love.

When the main character, Nancy, arrives home from her part-time job at a local florist shop, she finds a letter from her husband of 32 years, Clifford. He has left her to go “find himself” wants a divorce. To fund his self-exploration, he has cleaned out their savings, but has left her the house. Nancy discovers he hasn’t been honest about the mortgage almost being paid off. In fact, through Clifford’s shenanigans, she’s facing an insurmountable debt (including possibly having to sell the house).

In the short term, to cover the mortgage and provide some additional income, Nancy decides to rent out three of the four bedrooms in the house. Through serendipity, she meets three other seniors, Jackie, Phyllis, and Slate, who all have to vacate their current living situations and will thus become Nancy’s lodgers.

The four become friends, and thanks to her new housemates, Nancy begins to heal and blossom, embracing a new life and happiness she never thought was possible. A thoroughly delightful read that I highly recommend. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read the e-ARC. My review is my unbiased opinion.

This is a nice feelgood story. From the opening chapter, the author puts her protagonist in a rotten pickle. Nancy comes home from work to find a note from her husband, announcing he’s left her, taken all their savings and she’ll have to sell the house as the mortgage won’t be paid off as he’d led her to believe. This struck me as a very believable scenario. What can a woman in her sixties with a parttime job do to overcome this whopping emotional and financial blow?
Nancy decides a sensible option might be to take in lodgers. Nice, middle-aged people, like herself, who still work and won’t hang around the house all day but won’t stay out until all hours either.
The trouble is the three people she takes in are anything but sensible. Partly by design and partly by accident she ends up with:
Self-indulgent Jackie, who dresses well but does her best work as a life model with her clothes off;
Phyllis, who works at a mystical crystal shop and won’t leave the house without reading her tea leaves;
Marvin, singer in a sexagenarian rock band. (A bit on the young side, methinks, compared with The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, AC/DC and even Def Leppard.)
Gradually the lodgers’ lifestyles rub off on staid Nancy, and she learns to embrace her unexpected change of circumstance.
I particularly liked the way it kicked up a gear in the last quarter of the book when all the characters played a part in achieving a desired result. Even Cobweb the cat lent a paw to the task. I punched the air.
This is an independent review of an early copy. I thank the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity.

Growing Old Disgracefully by Karen King is a fun, heartwarming, and refreshingly honest story about embracing life at any age and refusing to be defined by expectations.

From the start, this book has a lively, uplifting energy that makes it such an enjoyable read. The characters are full of personality, and I loved how unapologetically themselves they are. There’s something incredibly empowering about watching them challenge stereotypes and decide that getting older doesn’t mean fading into the background—it means living more boldly.

The friendships in this story really stood out to me. There’s a strong sense of camaraderie, support, and shared history that makes the relationships feel genuine and relatable. The banter and humor added so much charm, balancing out the more emotional moments and giving the story a light, feel-good tone.

At the same time, the book doesn’t shy away from deeper themes. It touches on loss, change, and the fear of becoming invisible, all while reinforcing the idea that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. I appreciated how these themes were handled with both sensitivity and optimism.

The pacing is steady and easy to follow, though there are a few moments that feel slightly predictable. Still, the warmth of the characters and the message at the heart of the story more than make up for it.

Overall, Growing Old Disgracefully is an uplifting and entertaining read that celebrates friendship, individuality, and living life on your own terms. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy feel-good women’s fiction with humor, heart, and a strong message about embracing every stage of life.

Whenever I pick up one of the books in this series, I know by the end I am going to feel good. Our protagonist, a lady of a certain age, Nancy, returns home from work one day to discover her world has been torn asunder. Not only has her husband abandoned her by way of a note, she discovers he has remortgaged their home after bad financial decisions and drained their savings so he could go and find himself. Once the shock and sorrow have receded somewhat, she is presented with divorce papers that if she signs will leave both of them without any hold on the other. While she has rights and could contest, she just wants to be rid of him in spite of leaving herself with a home she will lose in a year’s time.

She must figure out a way to survive and pay her expenses until then and decides lodgers might be the answer. One leads to two. Two leads to three. Before she knows it, her bedrooms are filled, but more importantly so is her soul and her heart. For the first time Nancy is living and loving it. The four become close friends who are enjoying each other but we all know Clifford will loom again, threatening all she has built. But what are friends for if not to assist in her time of turmoil. It is a fun read and none so much as when the trio of friends set about freeing Nancy from Clifford. For those who revel in comeuppances, this one is a doozy.

The reader will have a happy grin by the time the book is over. Feel good? Yes, thank you. Five purrs and two paws up.

Growing Old Disgracefully is a heartwarming story that gave me major Golden Girls vibes. It is a quick, enjoyable read with a lovely blend of humor and a touch of romance.

The story follows Nancy, who comes home one day to discover that her husband of 32 years has left her, taking their savings, asking for a divorce, and leaving her with a mortgage she cannot afford. Determined to remain in the home she has built and the gardens she has lovingly tended, she decides to take in boarders to make ends meet.

The book introduces a range of characters, each with their own quirks and distinct personalities. While I did not personally form a deep emotional connection with any of them, I appreciated the individuality they brought to the story. My favorite character was Cobweb the cat, who chooses exactly who to charm and who to irritate in true feline fashion.

Some aspects of the story feel a little far fetched and a tad unbelievable, and at times the plot plays out with the rhythm of a sitcom. This adds to the humor but may stand out if you prefer stories that feel more grounded.

Overall, Growing Old Disgracefully is a charming and comforting read, perfect for anyone who enjoys found family dynamics, second chances, cozy chaos, and a light sitcom feel.

Thank Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

When I saw the cover for this one I was like this is going to be hilarious. Maybe golden girls meets sex and the city’s movie. But I was so far outside on this one. This book is funny and about finding yourself after you hit rock bottom. But what I didn’t get right is that this book is relatable. This could happen to anyone. You can’t control other people and the situation that you end up in. When Nancy’s husband leaves her after 32 years, with a single note and in the most douchy way. Nancy doesn’t let the world destroy her. She constantly steps up, makes choices to change to be stronger, to be able to be proud of herself. This book is such a hype novel. The quest for found family and figuring out who you are is just so uplifting, emotional and shows that you are never at the end. Things can always get better. I loved the side characters, Marvin, Val, Jackie and Phyllis and The Cat my absolute favorite. Cobweb is such an amazing edition to this story, I almost felt like he was going to be Phyllis familiar (talking cat) like in Sabrina.
If you need an emotional, funny second chance at life, with amazing found family and crazy outings this is the book for you. This was my first novel from Karen King and I will be going back to see what other of their books I can add to my TBR.

I have fallen in love with books written by Karen King and the British life. First of all, kudos to Nancy! As a woman whose husband suddenly walked out (left me for a younger woman) after 27 years of marriage, my heart ached for her. But the way she pulled up her big girl panties and began to live a satisfying and fulfilling life without her jerk of a husband made my heart soar. If Nancy was a real person and we lived close to each other, I could envision us being BFFs. The people who become part of her life were delightful. I enjoyed watching how Nancy matured and developed into a self-reliant and happy woman with a new set of friends, a new life, and a potential love interest. I absolutely love reading books about a group of individuals “of a certain age” who create a sense of community and prove that your home may have felt empty, but your life will be filled with friends, adventure, a sense of purpose, and hope for the future.

I absolutely laughed at so many things in this book! Nancy husband Clifford had just retired and left Nancy to travel. Also, he left the house and its mortgage because he hadn’t been honest with Nancy about the second mortgage, plus other things! She was stumped because Clifford was a pretty stuffy person and never wanted to do anything. She had to figure out how she could make the house payments until she could get out from underneath the mortgage. So she invited Jackie which was Pam’s mom who Nancy worked for, Phyllis who was a caregiver to Joyce and Howard her son didn’t want to pay Phyllis anymore he was quite greedy. And, then Slate (Marvin is his real name). These three individuals moved into Nancy’s house and they all helped each other out and got along great. Nancy really came into her true self and was enjoying life finally. It probably helped that Slate was rather handsome. But the three knew they still needed to look for a more permanent place to live. The skinny dipping!

When Nancy's husband leaves her a note saying he has left her, filed for a divorce, taken all the savings, and remortgaged the house and told her she could have the house. She wasn't sure what she was going to do. She was so lost, but then she started to look around and she had three empty bedrooms, maybe she could rent them out. There were a lot of stipulations doing it that way, so she posted if anyone was looking for a short time place to live and pay for a bedroom. She had three people show up, and all three wanted a room.
What started as strangers, turned into friendships, finding who they are now, and the things they do along the way. It is exciting to read, that at any age, you can create a new path., and find the courage to create a new life.

Nancy has the shock of her life when her husband of 32 years leaves her to “find himself”. Not only has he left her via a note but has taken all their savings and remortgaged the house leaving her with a huge debt. She takes in three lodgers in her spare rooms to help her cover her bills and mortgage payments but they turn out to be the best people and friends she could have hoped to find.
A feel good story of found family and friendship which will keep you engrossed until the end.
I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. Karen King is being added to my list of must read authors.

Book 112 of 365 ~ 2026

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Something I have noticed since I turned forty is my leaning towards cozy reads about women aging as gracefully as they can, i.e. realistically.

Poor Nancy's world is turned upside down when she wakes up to find a note left by her husband saying that he is leaving her to explore the world while he can.

Hello? Wake up call?

So what follows is how she of course lives the best life she possibly can with what she has got.

What else is a girl to do?

Enjoyed this one!

I received a complimentary copy of the ebook. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Nancy arrives home from work one day to find that her husband has left her. Not only left her, but has emptied their savings and left her in debt.
She has to do something quickly. She ends up taking in three lodgers. All of them are in their 60's so she feels safe that life will be quiet. WRONG!
Jackie is a librarian by day but a life model by night. Phyllis works in a Crystal shop, reads her tea leaves and has a black cat. Marvin, aka Slate teaches poetry and family history at the library, butsings in a rock band.
Her life is turned upside down, but for the better. What can go wrong?

After her husband's pre-retirement crisis takes him on a world tour - framed as a journey of self discovery - Nancy has to work out what her life is going to look like at this point.

She decides to take in lodgers because she has a spacious home, but soon discovers that, despite choosing people in her own age range (instead of unreliable youngsters!), she may have bitten off more than she can chew.

Because this lot are wild - and Nancy herself is in for a wild ride with them! This is a charming, funny and life affirming story that will resonate with many readers.

Nancy is shocked when her husband leaves a note telling her he's off to travel, leaving her the heavily mortgaged house to her as he files for divorce. In order to raise the money for the mortgage payment, Nancy decides to take in three lodgers to supplement the income from her job. She ends up with three interesting lodgers who challenge her to step out of her comfort zone and try new things. A delightful read about family, friendship and love.

Growing Old Disgracefully was such a fun and heartwarming read. First of all - Clifford - such a jerk. I liked seeing Nancy's character growth throughout. She really started to come into her own. The relationships with Slate, Jackie and Phyllis are honestly so enjoyable to read. Each comes with their own quirks and personality traits and ultimately they were just all so good for each other. This book feels like a warm hug.

Growing Old Disgracefully by Karen King

A feel good book, this looked like fantastic fun and I couldn't have been more right. When Nancy's husband leaves her with nothing but a note and stonking debt, she has to resort to taking in three lodgers in order to make ends meet and cover her bills. Unbeknownst to Nancy at first, her husband has done her favour, as her lodgers turn out to be just the tonic she needs. This is a lovely story of friendship and finding the joy in life, even when you think things have hit rock bottom.

I read the book in one day, whilst on holiday so any criticism needs to be taken from a I still couldn’t stop reading it perspective. Some of this review is written in the current tense, well because I read it so quickly!
At first I thought the main character was annoying, I guess that was the point. At times there are annoying tropes woman takes off glasses adds mascara is beautiful that sort of thing.
Story is about a woman whose husband leaves her, she moves three strangers in to avoid loosing her house.
Told from different perspectives but all with similar tone.
I am reading it very quickly. I don’t think it was the best characterisation and I don’t think a pub band is really a Rock band. I might be being judgmental and I wonder if the women being 5 years older than me is annoying. They feel much older than 5 years.
I did love the find yourself after your partner leaves story line which I do think is so true. It’s definitely made easier if you can manage finically, bit hard to find yourself if you’re totally skint! I also do appreciate a book with older women being front and centre.
Not sure I agree in embellishing denim as a look for your 60s though. Although I did then like the sod it if men can dress like teenagers then so can women, I’m just not sure teenagers embellishing their jeans has ever been an actual thing…..
I’m getting annoyed at her wondering what her husband would think about her… potentially this is transference coming from me! 🫣
The transformation of the main character keeps making me think of Sandy in Grease!
All in all whilst I was annoyed at some parts I found this book an easy and quick read. It was uplifting and whilst the characters felt about twenty years older than their actual given age, even down to their names, I think it’s more about me refusing to believe I’m in that almost, partially, retired age.
I think people who love Richard Osmund would like this, I think if you are going through a divorce, or even if you’re married to an idiot then this is a book for you.
There is a death, I didn’t find it triggering, financial abuse by a spouse, still a bit triggering but on the whole it’s a light hearted book. I would probably consider more from this author and she did resolve the story well.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing this book for my consideration, this is all my own rambling, honest and personal opinion

Nancy is shocked to discover her husband has left her and taken their savings.
What will she do as he has left her with no money to cover bills and he changed the mortgage to interest only, what a disaster!
Nancy decides to rent out rooms in her house and that’s when Jackie, Phyllis and Slate come into her life.
Three different people who make a big difference and come to mean a lot to her.
Slowly Nancy rediscovers herself and her love for life.
A fun filled read with lots of laughter.

All have life stories but become friends as they move forward.

This was such a lovely book. When Nancy’s husband of 30 years, walked out taking all their savings he told her she could keep the house, but it had been remortgaged! She couldn’t handle a mortgage and all the other household bills with just her wages so she decided to rent out her 3 spare bedrooms. Her tenants become like family and she enters a new fun time in her life.
