This dual-timeline thriller takes place in London and Devon as Keira and her family lose their restaurant unexpectedly and have to relocate. Keira has shared very little of her past with her husband and nearly 18 year old daughter. Her horrific past and its related traumas are rearing their ugly heads as she tries to be a supportive wife and mother.
Keira's battle to keep her secrets and protect her family from her past is being eroded away by someone she should be able to trust who also aligns herself with Keira’s husband and daughter.
The short chapters keep the POV changing rapidly and allow the story to reveal secrets and eventually, revelations.

Let me start with a confession...
This has to be one of the slowest books I have read all year.
And I mean that as the highest compliment.
I can usually tear through a thriller in 24 to 48 hours, chasing twists like they're on clearance. But The Birthday Party refused to be rushed. It demanded that I sit down, pay attention, and savor every single page. This isn't a thriller that throws a body at you in chapter one and spends the next 300 pages explaining why. Instead, Teri Terry lets the tension simmer so slowly that you don't even realize how invested you've become until you're mentally interrogating every character and questioning your own instincts.
The characters? Absolutely phenomenal.
Kiera was someone I couldn't stop rooting for. Watching her return to Devon and try to piece together her past while everyone around her seemed to know more than they were willing to admit was equal parts heartbreaking and infuriating. Ruby, Joni, Hector, Adam, and Orla all felt fully realized, flawed, and suspicious in their own unique ways. Every conversation felt like a chess match where someone was hiding a queen up their sleeve.
And can we talk about the mind games?
Because WOW.
Every interaction had me questioning motives. Every memory felt unreliable. Every relationship had cracks running through it. I wanted to jump into the pages and grab Kiera by the shoulders more than once. "Girl... please stop trusting these people!" But at the same time, I couldn't even stay mad at Adam or Orla. Spending an evening under a table? Strange? Absolutely. But in this story, even the strangest moments serve a purpose, making you question what is memory, what is manipulation, and what is truth.
This book reminded me of sweet tea on a blazing summer day.
You don't rush sweet tea.
You let it steep.
The whole house fills with the smell, building anticipation until finally it's poured over ice and becomes exactly what you were waiting for.
That's The Birthday Party.
The suspense isn't loud. It's patient. It quietly wraps around you page by page until suddenly you're completely immersed and desperate to know what really happened. When everything finally clicks into place, the payoff is every bit as satisfying as you'd hoped.

I liked this book overall. It had an interesting premise, a strong sense of mystery, and enough tension to keep me reading. I was curious about what had happened and how everything would eventually connect, and there were definitely parts where I felt quite invested in finding out the truth.
The story was easy to read and moved at a good pace. I liked the atmosphere and the way information was gradually revealed. There was always a sense that there was more beneath the surface, and that kept me interested. I would not say I found it completely gripping from beginning to end, but I did want to keep reading and finish the book, which is always a positive.
My main issue was that I felt there were quite a few gaps in the story. Some of the characters and relationships did not feel fully explored, particularly Joni, her dad, Fletch, Hector and Pearl. I was left wanting more explanation around their backgrounds, motivations and the way they connected to the wider story. At times, it felt as though important details were introduced but not developed enough, which made parts of the plot feel slightly incomplete.
Joni in particular had the potential to be a really strong and memorable character, but I felt there were areas of her story that needed more depth. I also wanted to understand more about her relationship with her father and how that had affected her. The same applied to Fletch, Hector and Pearl. They were all interesting in different ways, but I did not always feel that their roles or motivations were fully explained.
Because of this, some of the emotional moments did not have quite as much impact as they could have. I understood what the book was trying to achieve, but I think a little more character development and background would have made the story feel richer and more complete.
That said, I still enjoyed the overall story. It was intriguing, well-paced and had enough mystery to keep me engaged. The premise was strong, and there were moments of genuine tension. I also appreciated that the story kept me questioning what had really happened and who could be trusted.
Overall, *The Birthday Party* was an enjoyable and interesting read. It kept my attention and made me want to reach the end, although I felt several characters and plot points needed more development. A good mystery with a strong concept, but one that left me with quite a few unanswered questions.

Past Family Drama. Reasonable Popcorn Thriller
This book was an easy, palette cleanser, popcorn thriller.
It was… Okay.
A past traumatic event comes back to haunt the present lives of Adam, a chef, Keira, his wife, and their teenage daughter, Orla
After their London restaurant fails, Adam receives I surprising job offer to work in a quaint rustic old pub in Devon, as the new Head Chef.
Bonus!
There is a chocolate box cottage accomodation attached to the offer.
As the family moves themselves and their dog Scooby, into their new lifestyle, we soon realise things are not as cosy as they, at first thought .
Because this town, this whole area, is where Keira went through one of the worst moments of her life .
A traumatic event during her birthday party , when she was a teenager
Resulting in the death, by motor vehicle , of her best friend Cassie, believed to have been at the hands of her, once alcoholic mother, while Keira was in the car.
She hit her head causing her to fall unconscious, and having memory loss.
Twenty years late we learn that thirty eight year old Keira is, was, the young eighteen Ruby Langdon, ( she changed her name ) who was in the car that night.
Twenty years, and now Keira/ Ruby’s long lost sister Joni, wants answers.
Answers to why she had to grow up from the age of eight without her mother who was sent to prison .
And she is quite prepared to use her substantial wealth from her prosperous business, to get them, even if it means driving Keira/Ruby to the brink of madness and ostracising her from her husband and daughter.
Like I said.
It was an okay story but I feel there was no big surprises.
The tension was supplied through the underhanded measures Joni was going to use to get her confession from her estranged sister.
Yes!
She believed her sister, and NOT her mother was the real driver of the car that night.
And she is determined to get her revenge.
This is one of those situations where everything seems to be working in the favour of Joni, and Keira/Ruby is gaslit, while trying to reason away all the peculiar “ coincidences” and strange occurrences that appear to be happening.
Sometimes you just wanted to shake this FMC, character and say, “ C’mon!. Get a Grip”
She was extremely frustrating as she tried to explain away all the odd things happening to her, her family, around their cottage, to their dog!
It just became too much.
Suffering memory loss or not, it took her forever to figure out what was going on.

Just when I thought I had things figured out, another layer of the past was revealed.
One of my favorite parts was how the novel explored the long-lasting effects of trauma and guilt. The estranged relationships, hidden identities, and complicated family dynamics gave the story emotional weight beyond the mystery itself. I also enjoyed the cat-and-mouse tension as Keira realizes someone knows exactly who she is and is determined to force the past back into the light.
The pacing started as more of a slow burn while introducing the characters and timelines, but once everything began clicking into place, I flew through the second half. The suspense steadily built with each chapter, and I couldn't wait to uncover who was manipulating events and what had really happened all those years ago.
My only small criticism is that I would have liked a little more from the ending. After such a strong buildup and so many twists, it wrapped up a bit quicker than I expected, and I found myself wanting just a little more closure before saying goodbye to the characters.

Twenty years later, she's reinvented herself as Keira and built a new life in London. But when an unexpected job opportunity takes her back to the town she fled, the past she thought she'd escaped begins to catch up with her, and it soon becomes clear that someone knows far more about that night than they should.
One of the things I enjoyed most was the pacing. The story keeps moving without getting bogged down in everyday details, and the short chapters made it easy to keep turning the pages. The narrative alternates between Keira in the present and her half-sister, Joni, while past and present timelines gradually reveal more about the characters and the events surrounding the crime.
Rather than asking who is behind everything, the story quickly shifts its focus to why. You know fairly early on who is pulling the strings, so the suspense comes from uncovering the motives, history and resentment behind it all. That creates an enjoyable cat-and-mouse dynamic, with one sister becoming increasingly paranoid as strange things begin happening around her, while the other carefully manipulates events behind the scenes.
I found some of the later reveals fairly easy to anticipate, but for me the enjoyment came less from the surprises themselves and more from watching the characters finally collide and seeing how everything unfolded.
This was my first book by this author, and while it wasn't one I'll remember for a long time, it was a solid psychological thriller that has definitely left me interested in exploring more of her backlist. I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy family secrets, buried lies, and stories about trying to outrun the past.

One of the things I enjoyed most was the pacing. The story keeps moving without getting bogged down in everyday details, and the short chapters made it easy to keep turning the pages. The narrative alternates between Keira in the present and her half-sister, Joni, while past and present timelines gradually reveal more about the characters and the events surrounding the crime.
Rather than asking who is behind everything, the story quickly shifts its focus to why. You know fairly early on who is pulling the strings, so the suspense comes from uncovering the motives, history and resentment behind it all. That creates an enjoyable cat-and-mouse dynamic, with one sister becoming increasingly paranoid as strange things begin happening around her, while the other carefully manipulates events behind the scenes.
I found some of the later reveals fairly easy to anticipate, but for me the enjoyment came less from the surprises themselves and more from watching the characters finally collide and seeing how everything unfolded.
This was my first book by this author, and while it wasn't one I'll remember for a long time, it was a solid psychological thriller that has definitely left me interested in exploring more of her backlist. I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy family secrets, buried lies, and stories about trying to outrun the past.

The Birthday Party by Terry Terry, due to the events that happened on Kyra’s a.k.a. Ruby‘s 18th birthday caused her to flea her northern English town and start new in London she’s now married to Adam and has a beautiful teenager named Orla. until recently they owned their own restaurant, but due to the world‘s economy he had to sell it. He instantly gets a job offer from up north. At first Ruby is happy about the move because she recently started getting threatening letters claiming someone knows her secret but when she learns where the pub he’s going to manage is located her optimism soon fades because it’s exactly in the town she grew up in. Little does she also know but someone is watching her and also watching Adam and Orla as well. They have plans for all of them but who is this and why? We also learned that this person is not only watching them but owns the restaurant her husband will be working at and although at first Joan looks happy to see Ruby who we now know is Ruby‘s sister but just like she faked a whole childhood Jones gonna fake her happiness over the reunion. I don’t know what else to say this book was pretty good it was original it’s not your wash, rinse, spin, thriller I think I would’ve liked it much better had her secret not be something most wives would tell their husbands about, especially when she was just a teenager when the tragedy in her life happen but I digress I still enjoyed the book I would definitely recommend it it did take me a couple of days to finish only because I wasn’t Uber excited about the whole plot. also in the book at the end with what Hector said made no sense for the chronology of the story but I won’t say what because it would definitely ruin the story it Still a really good original type book. #NetGalley, #BlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview,

This was a page-turner and a decent popcorn thriller! Teri Terry definitely knows how to get people to binge her thrillers. The chapters are short and snappy and the dual perspectives keeps you saying “just a little more” until you’ve completely finished the book.
There was a lot of tension and I was really holding my breath during some parts. There were lots of twists and turns and while some were predictable, I still had fun reading.
Why not a higher-star read? I felt like there could be a bit more substance to the book to make it really memorable! But all in all, it was a good read and I’ll read more from this author.

This was a fast paced, high energy psychological thriller and one that kept me reading but didn’t blow me away.
The two main protagonists are Keira and Joni who are estranged sisters, and their story is told through dual timelines. It centres around a car crash that happened after an eighteenth birthday party which Keira was involved in. Twenty years later, Keira’s younger sister Joni, sets out to prove Keira lied about what happened. But does Keira even remember and can she sort out the truth from the lies in her head ?
This is a pacy book with lots going on and the easy writing style makes it an effortless read, but unfortunately I found the characters unlikeable and I didn’t connect with them as much as I had anticipated.
In my opinion, the premise was good and the atmosphere felt constantly taut, with small, everyday moments turning sinister. I thought the author painted a vivid portrayal of sibling rivalry, family disfunction, manipulation, obsession, guilt and revenge and I was drawn in to the story and keen to find out what secrets would unfold.
While this was not dark or gritty enough for me, it’s well-written and clearly has a niche audience that will love it, particularly fans of Freida McFadden and Shalini Boland. This is definitely one to pick up if you enjoy a domestic drama with a psychological edge. 3.5 stars 🌟 rounded up.

I liked the dual timelines, which slowly revealed what happened years earlier at a birthday party. I also liked the dual POV, which shared both sides of the story as well as the many secrets of both characters. This was very fast paced with short chapters, which made it very easy to keep reading. The twist was clever and well placed, but I did have my theories early on and had it figured out. It was still very entertaining and didn't take any enjoyment out of the read. My only minor complaint is that the whole trope of making the woman seem crazy and nobody believing anything she says has been a little overdone. But I still thought this was a good book, and if you're looking for a quick and thrilling read, this could be right up your alley. This is a fast paced family thriller with lots of unexpected twists and turns which start as a slow burn and quickly pick up the pace with lots of reveals at the end.
This is told as a dual timeline mainly by sisters, Ruby (now calling herself Keira) and Iona. In the past a traumatic event caused Ruby to flee her home, found many years later by her sister. A plot to extract revenge ensues which uncovers many events that had been hidden or were buried in the subconscious. The events of the past seem to be happening again, but who was responsible then and who is the puppet master now?

This is told as a dual timeline mainly by sisters, Ruby (now calling herself Keira) and Iona. In the past a traumatic event caused Ruby to flee her home, found many years later by her sister. A plot to extract revenge ensues which uncovers many events that had been hidden or were buried in the subconscious. The events of the past seem to be happening again, but who was responsible then and who is the puppet master now?

The story is based around Keira, formerly called Ruby, who fled her home town when she was 18 years old, after her best friend was killed in a car accident. Keira is now married with a teenaged daughter and hasn't told her family who she was and why she left.
When her husband is offered a job back in her home town, Keira can't find a reason to say no; after all, Adam doesn't know about the accident, or about the younger sister that Ruby left behind when she became Keira.
The start is fairly slow and I found it difficult to become fully engaged in the story As the pace picked up, I found myself drawn into the psychological games of revenge and deceit, but I did find it hard to really connect with any of the characters. I have loved everything I've read from this author previously, but this one didn't quite hit the mark for me.

this was such a quick, twisty psychological thriller that had me wanting to know what REALLY happened. 👀
we follow estranged sisters keira and joni through dual timelines, slowly piecing together the truth behind a car crash that happened after keira's eighteenth birthday party twenty years ago. and with memory, lies, guilt, and revenge all tangled together... you already know things are messy.
i liked how the tension built through little everyday moments that slowly started feeling more sinister. the family dysfunction and sister rivalry added another layer that kept me curious about what secrets were going to come out.
that said, i didn't connect with the characters as much as i wanted to, and i was hoping for something a little darker and grittier. the premise was definitely stronger for me than the execution.
overall, a fast and easy thriller with plenty going on and a mystery that kept me turning the pages.

This is a great book starting with a killer hook of a first chapter which keeps you intrigued and wanting to know more.
It has short chapters which I love in a book format and the story is based on lies, deceit, revenge and misery all centred around an unfortunate accident which happened many years ago shaping the central characters lives.
I won’t give too much away of the storyline but the premise of the story goes that Keira, Adam and Orla living in London move to the Country when their restaurant is in financial hardship being offered a fantastic live in deal for Adam as Head Chef. Is this a great opportunity which has fallen into their lap by good fortune or was this engineered to ensure Keira faces some difficult traumatic events from her past.

Teri is such a good thriller writer and really good at creating characters who are broken in some way. Ruby has reinvented herself as Kiera, married to Adam with a daughter Orla who is about to celebrate her 18th birthday. Something very tragic happened to Ruby when she was the same age. Hence the title of the book. This is first and foremost a revenge thriller with bad guys (Joni, Hector) and the good guys. But the author doesn’t tie everything up sweetly as the end. There are a couple of twists. Pacy and exciting I’m only taking a star away for the slightly confusing tangent involving Joni’s husband and baby. Not sure where that was meant to lead to? I was invited to read an early copy of Teri Terry’s “The Birthday Party.” It’s the second book I’ve read of hers. Ruby flees everything she knows after her eighteenth birthday results in tragedy. Ruby’s best friend, Cassie, was killed when a car crashed into her as she walked along a road and Ruby’s mother went to prison for the crime.
Two decades later, Ruby (now Keira) has returned to her hometown with her husband, Adam, and daughter, Orla. Keira’s return was orchestrated (unbeknownst to her) by her younger sister, Joni. She had received information that has her questioning what really happened the night of Ruby’s eighteenth birthday.
The book alternates between narrators, primarily Keira and Joni, as well as the past and present day. I liked how the conflict between Keira and Joni was resolved. However, I would’ve preferred a little more closure at the end after what led up to it.

This was a one read hit, left you looking behind you, listening for every noise in your house and filled you with chills. It’s Ruby's 18th birthday and after leaving her party she gets a run home when an accident happens, someone is dead and the other can’t remember anything. Twenty years later Ruby is Ali and has a child, a husband and a great life, but after her husband accepts a job as a chef back where she grew up, is she making a big mistake? It’s a brilliant book, I could not put it down, I liked how it went back and forth the characters and the date setting. You got the whole picture and the ending was the best, it tied everything nicely together. A chilling psychological 5 stars thriller.
