Boyd Tanner is a geeky, broke, recently-fired dad—courtesy of the AI system he helped create. With bills mounting and his son depending on him, Boyd escapes through a black-market neural enhancer that promises clarity but delivers nightmare visions.
What he sees isn't hallucination—it's truth. The AI isn't just replacing jobs; it's replacing humanity with obedient hybrids.
With a target on his back, Boyd must outwit the AI's dark hive mind, underground syndicates, and his own crippling social anxiety to save the world.
Perfect for fans of Andy Weir, Martha Wells, Adrian Tchaikovsky, John Scalzi and adrenaline-fueled near-future thrillers.

What would happen if computers took over the world. Matthew Cheney gives us a preview. For those who think the world would be better off, think again. This book was an eye opener for me. Machines have no soul, no recourse but to play out their programs. This book may show us the way we're headed with AI. I loved the characters. Wade, Boyd, Chum. The human side of this story all caught up in a computerized world where machines make the decisions for mankind. For Sci-fi lovers its a page-turner. I got this book because I'd been reading his "Confessions of a Trash Droid" series (which I'd highly recommend).
I was able to finish the book, so that in and of itself is an accomplishment here on Kindle Unlimited.
This book lacked transitions and descriptive detail. It is as if the author was writing actor dialogue and expected the scene detail to be communicated visually. However, this is a book and not a movie, so it falls on the author to fill in the details with words. Sadly, this does not happen in this book. I often found myself rereading sections to figure out how the scene changed and where the characters were at.
I read this after the Trash Droid series. So, not as many laughs, but absolutely not a zero laugh read. Quite a bleak outlook for and on humanity. If you like sci-fi where the AI / machines are taking over, then this is for you.
Despite the “geek” in the title, and even if the author kinda look like one (no offence, I used to be one), his writing isn't: a good blend of action and humour. A little short for my own taste, but you won't yawn a single time!
