Because of Him

Rate this book
Blair Ackerman is a girl with crazy hair and a bad attitude. She's a girl who doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. She's a girl with only a duffel bag and a car named Nancy to her name, and that's okay by her. She's tough because she has to be. Nobody gets inside her head, nobody gets inside her heart.

Silver is everything she's never wanted. He's a good guy, a smart guy, a guy who's never met a girl like her before. He's the kind of guy who loves history, who laughs at his own jokes, who kisses like a sinful dream. He's the kind of guy who might just break down her walls and get inside her heart and make her feel.

Too bad he's forbidden.

Because when Blair's mom dies and she's sent to live with the father she's never met and a family that doesn't want her, Blair and Silver cross paths in ways they never could have imagined, and they discover that even though they know they should, they can't quite bring themselves to stay apart.

Has some of my favorite themes:
- forbidden
- teacher/student
- possessive, jealous hero
- feisty heroine
- beta hero

I adore the heroine:
She's snarky, strong, yet vulnerable and YOUNG - in years, mentally and emotionally. Quirky, beautiful, strong willed and bold.
Despite been hurt by everyone who's supposed to love her (past and present), she manages to stay true to herself. Picks herself up after each and every blow she endures from her family and the male mc.

Well written hero:
Whiny, petulant, immature 24 year old, vanilla beta nerdy hero who seduces and rejects the 17 year old heroine. Over and over.
Constantly draws her in, then dismisses her. And all the while blaming her for being so alluring.
It's unpleasant and hurtful for the poor heroine who doesn't know when he's gonna be rejecting her again or texting her to meet him, after he's JUST told her to bugger off.
He constantly insults her, hurts her, betrays her and thinks the worst of her.
Rejects her when she needs him most.
By the time he proves his worth, it's too little, too late - for me and my rose-colored glasses, anyway.
She, however, is so bewildered and starved for love and attention that she welcomes him with open arms.

I love a good student/teacher romance and this one was really good! There was so much going on in this story, Blair's life is kind of a mess. She's forced to live with her dad and his family that she has never met but she has this ability to see the best in everything. I loved Blair - she is a fantastic main character. I loved the banter in this book, it was really funny at times and was just really good. I loved Silver too, even though there were times I thought he didn't act his age and he did make some mistakes, the romance between him and Blair was very sweet. This book was not steamy but did have some sexy kissing scenes. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it!

This book doesn't get enough credit. Student/Teacher. Neighbors. Angsty. Deals with topics not talked about enough in literature (in my opinion). Give this a read if you want a good forbidden romance!

Wrapped up in a teacher/student romance theme, this was a fast and enjoyable read. It has some depth to it in a mix of serious issues, alongside some light-hearted feisty, and sexy banter.

Because of the sadness and heartbreaking lifestyle our heroine, Blair, has endured and to some extent still is, only makes the devotion and careful attention our beta hero, Silver, bestows on her more appreciated, captivating and endearing. He is 7 years older than 17-year old Blair - the age difference wasn't a big issue for me.

They meet totally by accident and, from their first comically and confrontational face-to-face, you’ll find these two are quite a pair – opposites attracting but drawn by an all-consuming chemistry. Blair is no pushover. She is sassy and brassy and pushes and shoves. She comes across older than she is, and is also hard working and hell-bent on making something of herself.

Their next meeting wipes the smiles off their faces and shines a big old "FORBIDDEN" warning sign directly towards them. Blair needs all the friends she can get and doesn’t want to lose Silver. Maybe they can be just friends. But remaining friends isn’t working out so well, and our hero is a man of honor.

With the addition of Granny Yo, there’s a breath of fresh air and liveliness to the whole shebang. She’s one cool little old lady with a heart of gold who packs a wallop. And the rest of the secondary cast brings with it another whole level of emotions from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Be forewarned that this is not a book full of steamy sex-filled pages. The sizzling chemistry is there and the shared kisses will melt your heart, but you'll find no R-rated scenes.

5 PLUS STARS!
I am a huge fan of student/teacher and I think I might have read all of the books available in this category now. I REALLY loved this one! I don’t know how I missed it because it has been out for a while but I’m glad I came across this beautiful story.
Blair meets Silver in a rather out of nowhere way and the sparks are flying from the start. Blair has had such a rough life up until this point and all the feelings that this book brought out just aren’t describable. I thought at one point something was wrong with me?!?! I was crying sad tears and then happy tears and then laughing. “But whatever, life is life, right? Because if you sit around thinking about all the bad crap then the world is sure as hell gonna pass you right on by.” The feels!!! Oh how I loved this book!
This little happy bubble is popped when some unexpected events happen. Blair learns many lessons and almost just gives up. I loved how the author wrote about this little town and the friends that Blair has met that kept her afloat. She was dealt a really crappy hand but these characters she meets in this town really made you fall in love with them. ALL of them! Really this book is a must read for the new adult/young adult lover of student/teacher relationships!
I couldn’t recommend this book enough! Has a story like this been written before? Yes, however not with the feels that this book brought out in me. So go ahead and pick this one up and enjoy the ride! Caution: there will be tears! Happy and sad ones! You will laugh for sure. Overall another great week read!

I wish I hadn't waited so long to read this because I LOVED it!!!! It was short and sweet, in other words...PERFECT!!! :) And all the characters were amazing too...even when they were being the biggest assholes ever...Blair still saw past the bullshit and saw how much of it was out of fear. I honestly have a crush on this girl, she was AWESOME! I loved the relationship between these two. Silver being the "nerd" (how adorable is a guy that blushes?!?) while Blair is the "bad girl" even though she's not a bad girl at all. I really really hope this becomes a series and we get some more of these characters :)

Oh yeah!! this book was ...... EPIC!!

Oh my I love me a good teacher/student book ;-)

it had everything, from sassy-ness to sexy-ness
it made me want to cry at how sad I felt for her I just wanted to give her a hug,

it wasn't cliche, I loved that her friends were random and weird and that gay and bisexual was openly ok :-)

sometimes I forgot that he was 7 years older :/ not sure if that's good or not but still it didn't make this book being any let cool

but granny yo was a whole other level!! that's what I'd wish for a gran to be!! she was so freaking cool!!

I really hope we get to read more Maybe about a brother or sister?? pretty please

either way I'd like you to go to Amazon and buy this book,,,, do it !!

Heroine was supposedly all bad ass and a bad girl. She so wasn't.

She was a naive girl with a desperate need to be wanted and liked by other people. Which isn't a bad thing, but it made her look weak when other continually turned on her and she continually forgave them.

The other characters were completely annoying. Most of them had no redeeming qualities. Who needs enemies with family and a crush/boyfriend-to-be like that?

A definite 5 star read for me! I loved this book. It was full of emotions and anticipation. Honestly I waited for the other foot to drop in this story and something major happen with the "unforbidden". This had just enough in it to keep me reading and loving it! Silver has to be one of my new favorite "nerdy" book boyfriends :)

It was a sweet and very cute YA story. The slow burn never really followed thru at the end. Teaser for sure but nonetheless I truly enjoyed it. Not your typical teacher/student plot.

*** AUDIOBOOK REVIEW ***
This story was a beautiful, emotional rollercoaster. I loved every minute of it. Silver & Blair were so good together. They had great chemistry and were definitely an opposites attract couple. Not only was this an age gap romance, it was also a forbidden love and older brother’s best friend romance. Silver & Blair had to keep their feelings and attraction secret due to him being her teacher but I loved how they developed a beautiful friendship that was challenged at times due to outside influences. However, at times, Silver was a total jerk and made me dislike him a bit because he was supposed to be the one person Blair could trust and a lot of the time I felt he let her down. Blair’s story was so heartbreaking. My heart was in my throat the whole time I was listening to this story. Definitely angsty and completely tame compared to the romance books I usually listen to. This was my first book by Jessica Roe and first time listening to Ceci Garcia. The single narration was overall great, but at times I was confused as to who was talking because the female and male voices sounded too similar to me. Overall, the narration really captured Blair’s story and made me feel everything she was going through. I would recommend this book. It was a nice change of pace to my usual dark romance and definitely hit the ol’ corazon deeply.

It took me a while for me to get into this book but once I got into it I was hooked! I loved Blair and her personality! Her character was just so bad ass. Everything that she had to go through was unimaginable and I was happy to see her overcome so much. I cried when everybody just assumed and turned on her and didn't even give her a chance to say anything. All the stuff they told her was harsh and just hit me right in the feelers. This was my first book by this author and I will be checking out all her other books

There were some weird editing mistakes, like using the word 'to' instead of 'too', 'got' instead of 'go', and missing periods all over the place. And no, I don't mean the unexpected pregnancy kind.

Editing errors aside, this was a relatively well executed story.

Insta-lust/hate
Forbidden connection
OW/OM drama
No explicit sex scenes

I kind of hate/love how Blair softened over the course of this book. I kind of wanted her to stay bitchy and rude. Being constantly and wrongly vilified should have kept her mean and standoffish. I did love her relationship with Granny Yo, though, and that was the start of the softening. Ah well, I guess having a stable home and 3 guaranteed squares a day will do that to you.

Overall, a decent read, aside from needing a better editor and the 4 detractors I mentioned above.

Ah a forbidden romance that you just can't help but ship.

After Blair's mother dies, she's forced to move across the country to live with her father and his family. Only trouble is she's never met the man and would rather be anywhere else in the world. But all she needs to do it finish her final year of high school and then she'll be off at college. While her new family is far from welcoming, she finds comfort in an elderly neighbour, who becomes a surrogate grandmother for her. What Blair didn't expect to discover was that her grandson, Silver, just happens to be the guy she made out with at a diner on her way to her new home. But just when Blair and Silver begin to fall for one another, a shock revelation threatens to tear them apart, or will it? Although they try, they can't bring themselves to stay away from each other, even though they're relationship is forbidden.

When the blurb said that Blair and Silver's relationship was forbidden, I certainly didn't expect it to be what it was - but you'll have to read it to find out, because it's certainly a great plot twist. Let's just say, I was getting major Pretty Little Liars vibes (which is why I actually ended up rereading it after I rewatched season one).

While I really liked the romance in this book, what I loved the most was Blair slowly finding a place in the world and making some amazing friends. And even though things with her new family are tense and shit at times, things gradually get better and its just really nice to watch Blair develop these different relationships. Some of the scenes with her new group of friends felt like The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, where Charlie finally has some friends and a place to belong. The same thing happens to Blair.

If you like new adult contemporary romance, then you will probably enjoy this book. You'll be heartbroken with Blair and be wishing that she and Silver would just get together already, despite the forbidden nature of their relationship. There'll be laughs and tears.

This is the first book I've read of Jessica's and I can't wait to continue on with the rest of this series and see what she's done with the other characters. I really like her writing style, and as someone who's become quiet obsessed with new adult and contemporary this year, it was a great read.

When I picked up this book, I wasn’t sure exactly what I was expecting. The cover is what drew me in, I’m not going to lie. And then I saw the forbidden romance with the girl too stubborn to let anyone in. So I thought, lets go into this with an open mind. And I was blown away.

This is a story about forbidden love in terms of a teacher student relationship. Stories like this always kind of weird me out because it can cross the line into creepy. But this reminded me a little bit more of Pretty Little Liars (the tv show) and I believe this story was done just right. It wasn’t the type of story where a teacher and student have stolen moments in a school closet somewhere. No, it was more of a story where two people in strange circumstances have their lives more intertwined than they can help it and just happen to fall for each other along the way but know that there is a line they shouldn’t cross.

What I loved about this story wasn’t the love plot, it was the family relationships that had me hooked. Blair lost her mother to drugs and is forced to live with her father who has never been in her life before now. This part broke my heart in so many places because of the way that Blair is treated. Like she's trash. Like she's a drug user herself. There was this part in the story where her father’s wife is so cruel and I just wanted to punch her in the face so badly. But I liked Blair because she was true to herself. She didn’t feel the need to prove herself to anyone. I think they needed to give her a chance to begin with instead of treating her like scum. So many mistakes were made just because of bad communication.

I think this book was well balanced. Blair wasn’t overly angsty, but she wasn’t a pushover either. This book almost had me tear up (more like tears of anger!), which is a rare feat for me. I was hoping for everything to work out in the end and I wanted Blair to succeed so badly. She just had to. This book was a bit on the shorter side and is one of those contemporary reads that just fly by. If you want a quick romance that isn’t overly cheesy and isn’t afraid to address some dark and real topics, this one is for you.

I can't believe this but I actually really enjoyed this book. I picked this up thinking that I was probably going to hate it but alas, I was proven wrong! I am very please. I mean I don't love it but I really, really liked it. Yeah. The reason why I'm giving this book a 5 is because of its originality. I like that it's so not clichè despite it being based on a clichè subject: forbidden love.

I really adore Blaire Ackerman. She took no shit from anyone. I like that she's sassy as hell, I like how straight-forward she was and I like that she's well-driven. I enjoyed her friendly, albeit crazy banter with Silver. She also didn't take serious offense easily, unless people hit it where it really hurts.

Regardless of her great personality (at least in my biased opinion) people tend to judge her for her appearances and her roots. She has this beautiful multi-colored highlights on her brown hair and she dressed quite differently than others. People tend to assume her for being a druggie, and it didn't help that her mom was in fact, a drug addict (which lead to her demise). Even so, Blair had vowed not to become her mother. And she didn't.

This book's main theme is probably forbidden love, and in this case it's a student - teacher love. In spite of it being a clichè subject, I think the author succeded in making this one not clichè. Unlike any other student - teacher romance, there weren't really a lot of sneaking around happening in it. Not really. Silver took the role of a mature adult and tried to stay away from Blair as much he could, even if he ended up hurting her in the process. Of course, it's inevitable. So don't worry. They are plenty scenes of them together!!

I like the author's writing style, I was really emotionally invested in Blair. I felt like I was really in her head. It was very cool.

It's a 5 for me!

Oh Silver, how I love you...
*FIVE "white tennis shoe" STARS*
I'm a sucker for a good student/teacher romance...actually, it's my favorite romance trope. And "Because of Him" is at the top of my long list of cherished forbidden romances! I was so hooked in to Silver & Blair's story from the very beginning! I could go on and on about how much I adored this tale but in short: "Because of Him" is an epic, memorizing story of finding love where & when it's lest expected. Silver was the perfect gentleman & Blair was the best kind of heroine! Their banter was hilarious & their love was beautiful. This isn't your typical student/teacher romance, at all. It's so much more than that. I LOVEDDDD this book and won't soon forget all the moments that made me laugh, the moments that made me cry, the moments that left me breathless. To say I'd recommend this is an understatement! Read it and I hope you'll love Silver & Blair's story as much as I did. But make sure you have tissues in hand when you do!
P. S. Can I just say how infatuated I am with Mr. Silver Keegan?!? I mean, helloooo! The guy is a geeky gem in a room full of dull losers. I've undoubtedly added Silver to my fictional boyfriend list! *wink wink*

This was such an unexpected find, I thought I would read a few chapters last night before bed, but it turned into so much more than I thought it would be and I stayed up all night and finished it. Absolutely adored this book, new favorite forbidden love romance. I recommend this book if you love the whole forbidden love aspect and love a sexy nerdy, hard headed hero :) And love more to a story line besides them getting caught or sneaking around and Jessica roe did that.

I haveto say this is the first book I have read that only has stolen kisses. I feel cheated, luckly, I was so pulled in that it made it easier but I kept thinking, "oh, here it is, something's going to happen" hell no! I loved Blair.. I do not take shit from anyone, which eventually changes, but hey, she's human. The family, errr~ wth is wrong with people who treat others like that?! "Granny Yo" well hell she was cool. Anyway, Silver was adorable, I guess that's what I will say, I was hoping (given his description...cute/nerdy)he would have had at least a filthy mouth on him, that definitely would have counted for something! All in all, I really liked this, I had some laughs along the way. It was worth the read

This was an amazing book! I love student/teacher romances! This is one of the great ones that I will come to and re-read. The characters were awesome and well-developed. Blair was a sweet, smart, film eighteen year old student, who would has had a bad childhood. Silver is definitely boyfriend material, he is sweet, adorable, and just HOT! I thought the arguments between these guys are funny and cute.

The secondary character were amazing as well. The ending was perfect. Glad they got their HEA! I didn't really like her step-mom, I thought she was cruel to Blair because she thought she was a drug dealer. Also, I loved Granny Yolanda. She was funny and witty. Never thought I would love an old granny so much. Overall, a fantastic read.

I realized from reading this story that I can hold a grudge. I guess I don't forgive as easily as Blair. Blair is an amazing character, she is strong, a survivor with a wonderful heart. she brought me to tears many times in this book and I loved it until about 70% in. That's about when my holding a grudge came in. Lots of awesome characters in this book. Granny Yo was amazing, as were all of Blair's friends and Eli. Now Oliver, Felicia, Jemma and even Zac can take a hike. They don't deserve someone like Blair in their lives. I would of been done with Silver too, but I love seeing Blair happy.

I think I should begin this review by saying that I have a slight weak spot for student/teacher romances (I also rate Unteachable, An Anthropology of an American Girl, and the Slammed series up with my favourite reads). So maybe I was destined to adore this book before I even began reading it!
