His Leading Man

Rate this book
Drew Beaumont is bored of the same old action hero, supervillain, romantic lead. He’s not going to let a fresh gay buddy comedy languish just because they can’t find him the right costar. No, Drew bats his eyelashes and convinces everyone that the movie’s writer should play Drew’s not-so-straight man.

Aspiring writer Steve Sopol has never had a screenplay optioned. Now one of Hollywood’s hottest properties wants to be in a movie Steve hasn’t finished writing—and he wants Steve as his costar. Turns out the chemistry between them is undeniable—on and offscreen.

Drew swore off dating in the biz, but Steve is the whole sharp, funny, humble, and cute. For Steve, though, giving in to the movie magic means the end of the privacy he cherishes. Will the credits roll before their ride into the sunset?

4 Hearts - Because this did not make me wince or roll my eyes once!

Just like the blurb says, Hollywood heartthrob Drew, is up for a challenge and that’s a comedy. However, despite finding the perfect script, Drew hasn’t found the right costar. That is, until the writer himself naturally fits the role to a “T”.

Steve for sure is hesitant to star in his own creation. He’s a writer, not an actor, and he prefers to be behind the scenes far away from the center of attention. Despite that, it’s very hard to say no to the charismatic Drew and plus, this is a huge opportunity that Steve can’t pass up.

This is Dreamspun Desires done right. Narrated by Kenneth Obi, he did a good job, and I have no complaints at all regarding the voice distinction and emotion that was brought to the story. This isn’t fancy nor silly. This had minimal angst, plausible progression, and real life doubts and challenges. Well…. as much as you can get in the privileged world of Hollywood’s rich and famous.

It’s apparent I liked this. Though Steve and Drew weren’t looking, they quickly connect and realize that they just might have something special with each other. Awww.

Simple easy sexy romance!

By now it’s not even a secret that I love the Dreamspun Desires series. I am hooked on it and even when I am stuffed full of the fluff, there is always room for more of these stories that simply make my hopeless romantic heart sing. Adding Ashlyn Kane to the mix just ramped up that singing to opera levels because I adore the romance Kane delivers and she delivered it hard Steve and Drew.
You know how some people you click with right away and everything’s smooth and good, and you just get along with them and trust them? And after a short time it’s like you’ve known them forever and you’re totally comfortable?

That quote right there can sum up my feelings with this book as well as the relationship and how it builds with Steve and Drew. I fell so easily into this book with the biggest smile my face as we get Hollywood Hot Shot Drew Beaumont screen testing with numerous actors to fill the role of Morgan on his latest film, Dog Gone. Not one of these guys is cutting it and when it’s suggested that the script writer, Steve Sopol show these boys how it’s done, Drew gets an idea to make this movie great.

I am writing this with the biggest grin on my face and I am trying to find words that aren’t gushing about the book but just like Drew and how he feels about Steve, I’m having a hard time.

I loved that we got both POV’s in this and I am always a fan of the dual POV. Drew and Steve are amazing together from the first read through and they chemistry was off the charts. This isn’t an insta love kind of story though the men are in constant contact with shooting the film, what we get is time for them to get to know one another and then act on the growing attraction. They take it slow though and the slow gave some beautiful moments of UST that had fantastic pay off.

This was so much fun. The whole shooting the movie deal was done so well it was if I could see all of it as it happened and loved being in Steve’s head while he wrote the script. Honestly, I would LOVE to see Dog Gone made as an actual film because it’s freaking funny! I laughed reading and I the chance to get to see all that dog napping and bro buds fall for each other would make my day!

Drew was a blast to read. He’s totally a diva and owns it and that makes a difference. He’s had his downfalls as a child actor, then teen actor who went off the rails to now an adult who is all about making his own decisions and choosing roles on his own terms. He has issues with being away from his family and his trust of relationship instinct isn’t the sharpest. His reason for wanting to be part of an independent film with a low budget and no publicity needs to be read first hand and he won my heart so damn fast it gave me whiplash. But being witness to his feelings for Steve and how he lets himself be vulnerable on all levels as he falls for his co-star was truly sigh worthy.

Steve! Oh wow did I love Steve. I knew from the beginning there was something he was hiding and even though I did figure it out, it was still great to watch it all unfold. Steve has always been someone who wanted to write so when he started script doctoring and was good at it, writing his own script was a natural progression. There are so many things I loved about Steve from being an introvert, his morning runs and everything to do with Rita and his mom. We know he has a few Hollywood ties and that he’s familiar with the business but Steve’s secret lends a bit of turbulence to this romance as it takes off on its flight to Happily Ever After. Don’t worry though, Steve and Drew are amazing co-stars and co-pilots of their destiny and they land carefully and comfortably.

Speaking of Steve being an introvert! I dug how that part of him was handled and not made to be a downer at all. Drew knows what Steve needs when he has peopled too much and he gives him his space even when he’d rather be the big spoon to Steve. It was lovely to see how Drew took care of him and how he never pushed Steve to be anything more than he was.

Acceptance and communication were abundant in this romance and it made the bumps the men had to get over easy to read because they worked through it. Even the recasting of a dog or fixing a scene, these two work so well together that I know they will be able to handle anything thrown their way.

Ack!

I have so much in my head right now from reading this and I have to tell you, I read this in a day. In a time where reading had started to feel like a chore for me that is telling you A LOT about this book. Once I started I couldn’t stop flipping the page while smiling and feeling all the emotions you get when you get lost in a book and fall in love with it. And I fell in love with this.

One last thing… the last lines of this book and the last page turn…what we get… Perfection.
OMG.
It was perfection.

I don’t usually choose romance that involves famous people – yes, deliberately – mainly because it often involves secrets, misdirection, breech of privacy, and a lot of stress because the involvement of media. BUT, I like few of Ashlyn Kane’s previous books; also this one coming from Dreamspun Desires line, I can expect low steam story that focuses on the wooing or relationship build rather than sexual satisfaction.

I guess I made the right choice this time! For romance in the Hollywood blitz, His Leading Man is pretty sweet and angst-free. It helps that both men are VERY likable.

While Drew is sometimes said of being a diva, but it never felt like so to me. I thought he was rather cute, because he hasn’t really had a good relationship before – it crashed and burned! – and he wanted to give this newfound feeling for Steve a try.

Meanwhile, Steve, though not exactly a stranger to Hollywood fame, admits that he’s more of an introvert. Dating someone famous is not exactly in his agenda. He also prefers to take things slow with Drew.

So yes, people, there are DATES, and slow dancing, and kisses on the cheek (awwww!!). All in between they are making their movie. And when the media has catch scent of their relationship, there is no big drama! Both Drew and Steve are quite level headed in dealing with the consequences, which a PLUS point from me.

Bottom line, I enjoyed this book… oh, and there’s an adorable DOG too … alongside some quirky movie scripts on page that makes me wish that the movie, Dog Gone, is made into reality so I can watch it on screen.

Well, this was utterly adorable. Extremely likable characters, even if Drew can be a bit of a diva, inside a mainly angst-free romance on a movie set between a famous Hollywood actor and the brand-new screenwriter whose first screenplay was just optioned and who's sucked into playing one of the leading roles in the movie, falling in love on set and off, and character growth wrapped in a fluffy, feel-good novel - yeah, I'm all for that.

Add some fun supporting characters, like Steve's mom, and Drew's agent, and you have yourself a well-rounded book with which to curl up in your favorite beach lounger for a sunny afternoon.

The meet-cute happens at the auditions where Drew rejects more than a few candidates to star in the movie opposite him, until he sees the cute screenwriter and decides on the spot that this is the guy who should be cast. Steve, the screenwriter, may not be a complete stranger to Hollywood but he values his privacy and would prefer to remain out of the spotlight. But who can possibly deny Drew?

Both of them are rather normal outside of the set, and they communicate with each other. There's a date and slow-dancing, and sweet kisses, and even a bit of steam. We see them on set making the movie Steve wrote, and we get to laugh with them when things don't go as planned. We get to see Drew get all frustrated, and we see Steve call him on that foul temper. Thankfully, there are no horrible miscommunications or stupid assumptions, and they even weather the media storm quite well when their budding romance is outed unexpectedly.

With a lovely epilogue, this book held me enthralled from start to finish, cute dog included. Also, could someone please make this movie from the book? It sounds fabulous, and I want to watch it!

Recommended. Buy this book and get yourself to your nearest beach or lakefront to enjoy this sweet romance.

Remind me not to read any more of the DreamSpun Desires books - the examples I've read have all the fizz of week-old soda, and the plot complexity of candyfloss.
Authors whom I otherwise like are sucked into the vacuous void.

Drew’s acting career is pretty successful. But while he gets good parts, he’s been wanting to do something a bit different. So when he finds a gay buddy comedy, he jumps on it.

Steve is the screenwriter, and this will be his first script made into a movie. When Drew asks him to stand in for whoever will be Drew’s costar, Steve reluctantly agrees. But their flirting turns into great chemistry, and Drew wants Steve to take the part permanently.

Although Steve had no desire to pursue acting as a career, when someone as handsome and well-known as Drew asks you to share the screen with him, you do. So he’s acting AND trying to finish and edit the script on the fly.

Drew and Steve’s onscreen chemistry is through the roof. As they take steps from flirtation to dating, they’ll be under scrutiny, no matter how much they try and keep things private. And for introverted Steve, who has tried to stay out of the spotlight for his own reasons, a relationship with Drew will force him into the limelight—ready or not.

As they become public darlings, both have past relationships and past insecurities to confront. But will their movie succeed, as well as their relationship?

This was really cute. I love the fact that there really wasn’t much drama between Drew and Steve, and some of the supporting characters (especially Rita and Marla) were a lot of fun.

I had a hard time with this one.

It took until about 30%-ish for me to start to get into it, and then really 50% for me to really be into it. Even then, there was a little something missing.

There wasn't enough heat or passion between these two. The sex scene was pretty hot and I felt there, I did. But then we didn't really get much else besides that one sex scene in the way of smut, or just heat and passion. Some kissing, but even after they get "together" we don't get to see a lot of them being together, together.

Okay, if this is a romance book, I expect the romance. There was some romance, some cute moments - the aquarium scene was cute, although we didn't get to be IN the scene when , and these two had a certain amount of chemistry.

But there just wasn't enough. It didn't feel like they felt much at first, and then by 30% there was like a hint in a sentence here or there, THEN they started to like each other, then they got together. But never felt much or any of that sexual tension leading up to them getting together, or even romantic tension.

Even after they get together - aside from the sex scene, which was well done - I didn't feel that they were in love with each other. Googly-eyed over each other? Yeah, at times, although mostly from Drew. But that doesn't always translate to love.

Steve was a reserved person, so I get that he wasn't crazy demonstrative with his feeling for Drew, but...come on. There could have been more from him in their scenes alone together, is all I'm saying.

So overall, this felt mostly "meh" for me because there just wasn't enough. The story revolved around them filming the movie and then having to deal with it being known that they're a couple (although even that was kind of lackluster. Not a lot of craze, not a lot of pressure from the paps, nothing of Steve freaking out too much with the spotlight on him even though he didn't like attention on him. He got annoyed and frustrated and a little uncomfortable with it, but not like he can't deal with it kind of freak, which was what I was expecting) and so even with the potential for drama with Steve not liking the spotlight, that didn't really go anywhere.

This was like the opposite problem of not enough drama. There is a delicate balance needed in stories not to do drama for drama's sake, but also not to have anything happen at all. You gotta get between those two writing extremes, and I think this story ending up on the "nothing happening at all" scale.

Okay, so they're .

There was no actual...drama, I guess. Or stakes to be had. It was all pretty mellow with a good happy ending, which left me with a feeling of "meh" at the end, especially with the slow beginning that was hard at times to get through.

Drew Beaumont is a famous actor in Hollywood, but he’s bored. He always plays the same roles, super villain, action hero or romantic lead. When he reads the script of an unknown writer, a gay buddy comedy, Drew knows this movie and the role of Scotty are for him, but he can’t find the right co-star, until he meets the writer, Steve Sopol.

Steve has wanted to be a writer since he was six years-old, and when his friend, Hillary (Drew’s agent) told him that Drew Beaumont, THE Drew Beaumont wants to play in his movie, Steve can’t believe it. While they search the co-star, Steve shows that he’s more than a writer. When Drew asks him to be his co-star, Steve sees the opportunity to make his movie right.

They didn’t expect to be as in tune on screen as in life.

I loved this book from the beginning; it was a super sweet romance.
Drew and Steve are good to each other. They don’t play games, they don’t cheat, they are just them, and they are good.
Drew is an actor and a diva (it’s him who said that, not me). He refuses to date in the industry, with all the sharks who want to be known and recognized, he doesn’t want to be used for his name. But Drew without, acknowledging it at first, wants a life-partner. He’s bi and out, he doesn’t live in a closet, but he’s solitary nonetheless. I like him a lot. He’s natural, simple (as simple as a diva can be) and funny.

Steve is shy, he values his privacy and wants to be known for his talent, not for his sex life. Dating Drew, implies for him that he’s going to have to give up on his privacy, but Steve isn’t as clueless about Hollywood’s way of life as Drew thinks. I adore Steve. I adore his simplicity and his sensitivity. He’s funny and very smart. He’s honest, what we see is what we have.
The book was very good, and the plot interesting. All the book is about Drew and Steve on set, and in life. On set as Scotty and Morgan, and in life as Drew and Steve. The author includes some scenes from the movie and excerpts of the script brilliantly in the book. It was like reading the story in the story. It was brilliant and gives a good breath in the story.

Like I said, I had a good time with them, no angst, no drama, no hesitation, just two men falling in love and trying to make it work.
If you want a sweet romance to read, go for this one.

It’s 5 OptimuMMs for the actor and his leading man!

Maybe a little drama llama would be ok...sometimes...

Drew Beaumont is a successful actor who's bored with the usual Hollywood fare when it comes to movie roles. So when he gets the chance at something that's different and pushes all of his acting buttons...there's not much that Drew won't do to not only have a role in it but to make sure the movies gets mad.

Steve Sopol is so close to having his dream come true of seeing his first screenplay become a movie...but is he desperate enough to step out from behind the camera when the leading man wants Steve to take on the role of co-star. Is Steve brave enough to speak the words he's written in front of the camera?

I wasn't looking for big, convoluted problems or overly dramatic resolutions and for the most part what I found was that any problems or conflicts seemed too be resolved just a little too easily to the point of bordering on tedious at times.

The steam and sex were fairly low key in this one and that's not an issue, but something somewhere has to happen to make me feel the connection between a couple and while I'm not a fan of over the top excessive amounts of sex. I am a fan of steam and heat and attraction...something that makes me say 'yes, these two are going to melt my e-reader' ...there has to be something that still gives me a sense of their connection, makes me feel a little melty inside but I just never quit felt it with this pair. I could see where it was possible. On paper they're a good match. But I wanted to feel that connection not see it as a logical forgone conclusion...sorry, I'm a romantic sap about this stuff.

While both men had their problems to deal with...as well as being a self professed diva Drew's every move is scrutinized because of his fame as an actor and there was of course an ex or two in his past. Steve ironically has a bit more to deal with as well as an ex who thankfully stayed in the past but left his mark on Steve in terms of emotional damage. Steve has reasons why he wants his personal life to remain private but with stepping into the limelight it becomes not a matter of if things will be revealed but when.

Also just a quick mention as far as secondary characters go I really liked Steve's mom, she was one of the only sparkling moments in what turned out to be an ok but rather lackluster story. I truly don't need a lot of over the top drama in a story but I have to admit this one went a bit to far the other way.

It's been a long time since I've read anything by this author and I guess maybe I was looking for something more along the lines of 'Return to Sender' or her 'Lost Boys and Love Letters' series, I loved the hell out of that series...like really loved it...maybe it's time for a re-read? Or maybe if the audio gods are smiling on me these will be on audio one day (yeah, that's totally a hint on my part, but hey, you don't get, if you never ask, right?)

Thankfully, Kenneth Obi was the narrator for this one and while the story may have had some lackluster moments his narration did not and kept me on track with things making for a more enjoyable story experience.

His Leading Man is a thoroughly enjoyable romance. It's just so sweet, adorable, cute, fluffy, low angst, and easy to lose yourself in.

Told in a dual POV this had a lot of opportunities to devolve into cliche, but it didn't. Kane keeps the writing tight and the characters are well fleshed out and I spent the entire time rooting for them.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the HEA ending, and Kenneth Obi's narration was really well done with easily discernible character voices, good timing and pacing, and an easy delivery that made this a pleasure to listen to.

It did take me a bit to get into the narration, because I didn't personally like the character voice for Drew as it seemed too effeminate and breathy for the character, but that's just a personal preference, and I eventually was able to sit back and just enjoy.

Looking for some fluffy romance with likable characters, low angst, and a very happy ending? Check this out.

This is a charming romance about fame, expectations, and Hollywood's portrayal of queer characters.

I like these light romance in the Dreamspun Desire line and this is a especially good one with well drawn characters, a quick moving plot, and plenty of chemistry.

We get to know Drew and Steve at the same pace they get to know each other. Its fun, moving. and a delight.

Good stuff.

> > Judging a Book by its Cover < <
Upon first glance at the cover, I’d thought the model was at a beach, but looking closer, I think it’s meant to be a pool. City skyline in the background. The model is a cutie, enough to make me stop to read the synopsis. The synopsis promised to be fun.

> > Looking Deeper < <
POV ~> Third person

Hollywood actor, Drew Beaumont, spied an unfinished script on his agent’s desk and knew it was something he wanted to be a part of.
Steve Sopol enjoyed working behind-the-scenes best but when a Hollywood heartthrob demands to star in his not-yet-finished movie as Scotty, he knew he had to find the right person to play opposite as Morgan… too bad the candidates were less-than-ideal.
A movie star diva who becomes personally-invested in a small-budget film and a screenwriter that reluctantly agreed to play a part.
Drew and Steve had a sweet, warm chemistry from the moment they met. In Hollywood, it’s hard to trust motive and true intentions, easier to be betrayed and used. While both know the ugliness of betrayal, they warily begin a sort-of friendship that continues to develop. Through set-backs and black tie events, they were there for one another.
This was a light, borderline fluff, entertaining little read with an enjoyable cast and fun story. The writing was smooth and easy. The conflicts were minimal and the easily resolved. Predictability was low. The conclusion was sweetly satisfying.

What an enjoyable story. Drew is a famous, out bisexual leading man, who has been in the business since the age of 10. He is determined to get an unfinished script he discovered on his agent's desk into production, and the story opens up with the frustrating task of auditioning for the co-star of that film. Nobody is standing out, until Steven, the script's writer, is asked to coach one of the mediocre actors by showing him how he wrote the scene to be played. Steve's ability to hit that character's lines perfectly gives Drew the idea that Steve was meant for the part. With a little arm twisting, Steve accepts.

Steve is a script doctor, the person called in to fix problems with someone else's script. Dog Gone is the first complete script of his own...well, it will be complete once he finishes writing it between acting out the scenes with his gorgeous co-star and spending time with him off camera.

Immediately, the two of them hit it off, much to both of their surprises. Drew had sworn off relationships because of a messy breakup, and Steve didn't want anyone to use him. Neither of those were big obstacles for them to overcome because for the most part, both of them acted like adults and talked things out. (Something that I highly appreciate in characters.) Pretty soon they are taking their relationship to a serious level, and forces beyond them aren't going to let them set their own timetable.

I loved the banter and the camaraderie between the two of them, and it was fun watching them bring the film to life. The secondary characters - I'm looking at you, Steve's mom - were fun and added a lot of depth. The twist and turns of their lives weaving in and out of the movie were fun little parts of the story for me. And I loved the little announcement at the end of the book.

Yep, it was a good read.

Overall I enjoyed this. It was very angst free and sweet, which I like, but it seemed a bit too easy at times. I thought Drew and Steve were a great couple. I liked their path together with the added experiences of being unexpected costars. I did feel like some things were built up in a way and then not really important in the end (the exes). The story was nice, but it wasn't my favorite. It was a 3.5 star for me, but I'm bumping up because I did like the characters.

I listened half and could not take it any longer. It just went on and on. This happened, then that, he said something, they smiled. I missed a sence of character, a plot, and some tension.
It was made worse by the narrator droning on and on in a matter of fact tone. He made no difference between thoughts, quotes and other occurrences, making every scene difficult to understand

Loved, loved, loved this book

Ashlyn Kane has done a masterful job. Just the right amount of everything. Marla, Leigh and all the other secondary characters were well drawn. I could see this being made into a fun movie. And the star of the book, Rita the dog. I highly recommend this book.

The idea of a screenplay writer starring in his own movie is quite funny, but adding the fact that the script is unfinished at the point they start filming makes this story hilarious. Oh, and even though it was supposed to be a comedy, romance just seems to “sneak in” as they get to know each other and subtle changes are made to not just the dialogue but the entire plot. Then there is the actor, a mainstream star looking for a gay buddy comedy, who loves the script (what there is of it) and is quite enthusiastic about working with someone who is less jaded and publicity-hungry than the people he usually works with. Put those two together, add a little time pressure, considerable attraction, and lots of humor – and voila, you have a very entertaining, sweet, almost angst-free romance. It swept me off my feet and was exactly what I needed.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

For the full review, visit https://wp.me/p220KL-dO4

From that review: Sometimes all you want is an extremely well written angst free romance.  One completely lacking in murderous ex lovers, psychotic stalkers, or even the normal life driven "why  did it happen to me/them" elements that realistically thread through some contemporary novels these days.  Sometimes, I just want happy.  A well plotted story, full of multidimensional characters who were easy to connect with, and, had a journey towards HEA that just pulled me in for hours.

His Leading Man by Ashlyn Kane is that story. "

Steve Sopol is an alias—he’s hiding an important piece of himself for many good reasons. When his big chance as a film writer comes through, there is only one catch: he must act opposite the big-name lead his small indie script managed to snare. It’s not that Steve hasn’t acted before, but writing is his passion, so if it means taking on the lead opposite the gorgeous Drew Beaumont in order to see his as yet unfinished screenplay make it onto film, Steve is willing to go the distance. But, the idea that this film could mean the end of his anonymity is a high price to pay.

Drew Beaumont is known about town for two things—his ability to deliver audiences and his single status. Drew has no desire to take on a relationship when occasional dalliances with either sex is good enough to scratch an itch. However, the more he gets to know his onscreen costar and head writer, the more Drew is drawn to the idea of actually trying his hand at making a go of something more than friendship. When a photo of he and Steve is leaked to the press, little does Drew realize exactly what that will mean for Steve, their budding romance, and any future the two men might have had together.

I think the most delightful thing about His Leading Man was the fact that Steve took on the more dominant role in the relationship when, by all expectations, it should have been the Hollywood star, Drew Beaumont, calling the shots. I loved that the author opted to shake up the normal pairing and make the lesser known man the one who really pulled the strings when it came to making the elusive Drew a quivering mess. I also enjoyed the fact that these two men became friends first and the romance was secondary. Yes, it was still fairly quick and, at times, predictable, but still I enjoyed this pairing immensely.

There is no doubt that this was a simple romance. There was no real angst, and even the revelation of who Steve really is was done with very little turmoil or negative repercussions. This was just a sweet love story with no real angst or moments of huge drama. His Leading Man is truly one of those books that is just about perfect for anyone wanting a delightful read on a sunny summer day.

Synopsis: Drew is a famous actor who really likes a script he reads. He is determined to act in this film, but everyone who is auditioning for his co-star is horrible. Because it is an independent film on a shoe-string budget, they can't afford a bid name. When the latest hopeful flames out, the script writer steps in to show him how it's done. Drew and Steve riff off each other, and Drew thinks that Steve should be his co-star. After all, who better to know the characters than the creator?
Steve agrees, and the movie starts shooting. As the shoot progresses, Drew and Steve get to know each other, and they both like what they come to know. Drew invites Steve to a social event with him when his usual date falls through. They encounter a few bumps in the road along the way, as do the characters in the movie.

This read wasn't amazing or awesome, but it did keep a smile on my face the entire time I read it. In a reading period where I DNF'd several books and nothing was really holding my interest, that was something very refreshing.
Drew and Steve aren't quite cookie-cutter, and their relationship was sweet. They each had their issues, but they actually talked things through and listened to each other. The movie sounded like something I would like to see, and I liked the way that it grew in ways that Steve didn't foresee.
I liked the friendship between Drew and Steve, and their relationships with their friends. It seemed to be a spot of normal in a life of crazy. Steve and Drew were very supportive of each other as well and encouraged each other to do the right thing Drew tried hard not to be a prima donna, but it did slip through sometimes, and when he had a jealous reaction to Steve getting more attention and focus when the story about their relationship came out, it felt like a true reaction of someone who is used to being in the spotlight, but not used to sharing it.

Drew Beaumont wants to work with someone he can connect with. Steven “Steve” Sopol may have a new side job. What I like about him is that he gives us an insider look at the process that is needed to create something for our enjoyment – kind of like an author.

This was a new author for me so it did take me a bit to get used to her writing style. It took a while to see where this was going. I didn’t feel any type of connection to our main characters. I felt more like someone standing along the sidelines watching everything unfold. Considering that Steve is a writer, I expected to laugh more. I had a chuckle here and there but maybe it’s a case of I just didn’t get it. But I was able to get the awkward moments.

Certain scenes seemed to move pretty quickly – like someone turned up the speed on the movie. Like when Drew asked Steve to join him at an event. I felt as if something was missing or got skimmed over. One good thing was that we got to know the main characters. They let us in, at least a little bit, to see who they are as a person and not just their public persona. And at least Drew shows that actors are human.

I think that this is one of those books that I have to read again. By the time I got to the end I just felt as if I was missing something. I was happy with the ending but just not sure where things got turned around and I got lost. On the upside, I don’t like giving up on an author if I just don’t connect the first time around. Will just have to see what else she has to offer.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Bright and fun but not in a class with "Homecoming for Beginners," which had the wit and the adult MCs and the avoidance of stupid miscommunication pitfalls, but also richer characterization and backstory. I've no objection to high-quality popcorn and to the extent I was disappointed it was only because of the inevitable comparison.

It's possible, too, that characters who have a lot of money are inherently less interesting to me even if they didn't get that money by nefarious means. "Homecoming for Beginners," again: one of the MCs is essentially homeless at the outset and spends most of the book working as a security guard; the other grew up with money and has suddenly inherited wealth but, alienated from his father, has made his own life as a paramedic in the meantime, so he doesn't read like a member of the wealthy classes even though he's spending $ freely to help his friend. It's a different vibe.

I'm not really being fair to "His Leading Man" -- it's not nothing that Ashlyn Kane wrote a romcom that's actually funny. I just can't help thinking about how it happens that a writer brings similar strengths to two different books and yet one turned out to be a well-done entertainment while the other is something to my mind much richer.

3.5 stars. I liked the zippy writing style of this while managing to forge that connection between Steve and Drew. Ultimately the romance part was felt by me and I liked both of them as a couple. And this was angst-free and fluffy and just a fun read, quite enjoyed it overall.

What fell more flat for me in this story was the believability of the whole setting and story plot. The world of Hollywood and movie making and celebrity here wasn't fully convincing for me, where I couldn't buy that unknown writer Steve would be pulled into acting as one of the main characters in a two hander story starring opposite Drew here, one of the biggest leading men in the industry as we would believe in the plot. Then them writing the script as they are shooting, then reveal of their relationship in the press from them going to an aquarium fundraiser together, the details of them being on talk shows and doing publicity, and their shooting scenes, didn't completely feel immersive to me- maybe it's just the product of years of consuming celebrity gossip and culture that made me more skeptical of the details here, IDK.

I did like Steve being from this Hollywood royalty background but raised humbly away from the spotlight, but being comfortable in this world that Drew occupies. His mom Marla is lovely, and the adorable dog Rita just stole the show.

Harmless Little Romp

This is a nicely paced, well developed, and occasionally funny slow-to-explode romance between Drew, a diva bi actor, and Steve, an aspiring screenwriter who has some experience in acting and doctoring scripts. They meet because it's Steve's script that Drew has chosen as his next project.

They meet cute, develop a little byplay, proceed to romance while little bombs of information pop up here and there to flesh out, or complicate, their relationship.

This is not a book with lots of angst in it, but rather something you can read on the beach, at the pool, or in the air, or wherever. I liked it from cover-to-cover (would have liked a cover with both Steve and Drew on it). But I quibble. Nice.

Thank you for the ACX Audio, I voluntarily give this book an honest review.
Drew the star that Steve wants for his lead character, making him thrilled but also nervous as his has even finished the script. Is Drew ready to be in the spotlight? Because as things progress on and off set, things are headed that way. Drew wasn't looking for any romances in the Hollywood groups, only that didn't mean was expecting Steve. As the chemistry heats up between them was after the charts on and off screen, will it just be a blip in a stars radar.  To a great and wonderful Narrator Kenneth Obi, as he will be missed in the Audio world that he brought readers like myself to lovely new place with just his character telling.
