Spend summer by the river with Heidi Swain in her comforting new novel.
Fernside is a truly magical a beautiful Georgian house, with a stretch of river and a lovely woodland, Willowell Woods, nestled to the back. It has always been owned by the Clarke family but now the woods are up for sale and not everyone is happy about it.
Constance is in her mid-eighties and has lived at Fernside all her life. She’s feeling rather low about the thought of one day leaving the only home she knows. Her grandson, James, used tolove the place, but ever since his mum died when he was eighteen, he’s struggled to feel happy there.
Newcomer Tilly has had a tough time of it recently. The death of her father and her disillusionment over her job in HR mean she’s now ready to make changes in her life. So she’s heading to the river near Fernside to scatter her dad’s ashes and take stock.
Will this idyllic setting provide the comfort Tilly needs, and will her connections with Constance and James heal her heart…?
Although passionate about writing from an early age, Heidi Swain gained a degree in Literature, flirted briefly with a newspaper career, married and had two children before she finally plucked up the courage to join a creative writing class and take her literary ambitions seriously.
A lover of Galaxy bars, vintage paraphernalia and the odd bottle of fizz, she now writes contemporary fiction and enjoys the company of a whole host of feisty female characters.
Heidi can be found at the keyboard at all hours of the day and night and quite often scribbling longhand in her car during her lunch break. She lives in stunning south Norfolk with her wonderful son and daughter and a mischievous cat called Storm.
Well what can i say about this book, Walking on Sunshine, i thoroughly enjoyed reading it, I hope heidi continues with another book/trip to Willowell as it would be great to see how willowell woods develops and the relationships between Tilly and James and also Zack and Kaya develops as in engagements and marriage, i didnt feel it was the end of the story, so i hope its a ....to be continued...heidi swain always writes great books and this didnt disappoint...i always try and guess the name of the places that are fictional....roll on her next book.
I am a huge fan of Heidi's books and was delighted to have the opportunity to read an early copy of this one.
Heidi has created a new village for us to fall in love with, Willowell, set in Suffolk.
It is a beautiful, uplifting and comforting read. I was totally invested in the main characters throughout the whole book.
Tilly is at a crossroads in her life when she arrives in Willowell but soon finds a great friend in the feisty Constance. I loved the friendship between the 2 generations. I felt both of them needed each to help them move forward. I liked James and felt he was very good for Tilly but he was a bit of an enigma.
The descriptions of the area and in particular the Woods were amazing and I loved the cast of supporting characters. It is such a lovely book to read and I read it in a couple of sittings.
Heidi has done it again in writing another excellent book. Hopefully there will be more books to come, set in this gorgeous location.
I found my self wanting to move to fern side and have willowell woods nearby, such a lovely story and with such a lovely setting, I loved this book and will look forward to Heidi’s next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this heart warming story. Set in the Suffolk countryside, in the village of Willowwell, Fernside is a Georgian house owned by Constance, who has lived there all her life and loves the house and Willowell Woods. Tilly has decided to give up her job and take a vacation at Willowell while she decides what to do with the rest of her life. When she sees Willowell Woods are up for sale, she thinks she has found the perfect solution. She meets Constance, who is selling the woods to raise money, and the two hit it off, and they decide to help each other out. It changes both of their lives. That is, until Constance's nephew, James, turns up, and he does not want to sell the woods.
I loved the characters in this book; they were lovely, and I really liked them all. Tilly, with her optimism, was full of hope for the future and so kind to everyone. Constance was a really determined character and definitely knew her own mind. Then there is James, handsome and a bit of a conundrum, especially when he puts a spanner in the plans.
This was such an easy read that I didn't want to put it down. I read it during long waits during jury service, and it brightened my day. If you are looking for a well written story with great characters and a lovely storyline, then you will want to read Walking on Sunshine. #Netgalley
Firstly, I have to start by saying that there are a few things pretty much guaranteed by a Heidi Swain novel. You will love the setting she has created so much that you wish it was a real place. The characters will feel like long lost friends. You’ll most definitely get hungry whilst reading there is almost always an element of food and there will be an element of annoyance that you hope will work out in the end. I can’t say anymore on that without ruining elements of the plot.
Alongside all of that I am back buddy reading with my favourite Catriona. I sure had missed her and reading 10% a day and sharing little in-clings along the way was the tonic I never knew how much I missed. I loved often waking to a message from her where she had been up and read the 10% letting me know where she was and often asking my thoughts on what was happening to date.
Willowell is a new setting from Heidi but I hope this is just the start of a new series of books connected to this oasis of calm and open spaces. Plus I think in this novel we’ve met the characters but there is so much more that can be explored. I have to take a moment to appreciate female friendships – as this is something that I’m truly loving reading at the moment. I guess being a woman in my 40s I’m now appreciating the ladies I have in my life a lot more. Constance and Tilly were an absolute joy to get to know as were Melody and Tilly.
I also have to mention the siblings I absolutely loved the slow-burn of understanding their relationship and how much they needed each other. Just in case it’s a trigger there is a strong element of grief that affects a number of our characters in this story and as ever it’s tackled with grace and reality. I have to also mention the nature aspect – this links heavily to so much in the story and the fact that being in touch with nature and making time to be in those open spaces holds so much for all of us. This aspect made me think am I embracing what’s on my doorstep. Am I truly appreciating the calming aspect that it gives me and how much that can truly add to my own wellbeing.
As for the love story I’m going to let you discover it the way I did. Falling in love with everything about this novel. My apologies this post should have been posted yesterday on publication day. Although in some ways it’s apt that I’m posting today as this treat is on a limited deal at 99p. Go go now… you won’t regret it.
I was so excited to have the opportunity to read Walking on sunshine as I love Heidi’s books and this one is now my new favourite! Such a warm, comforting hug of a book just perfect and such a beautiful heartfelt read that will stay with you long after reading it! Based in Suffolk we are introduced to the lovely Fernside area and the important Willowell woods that play the most integral part of the story, an area that Tilly the main character has such fond memories of as a child, returning now as an adult to carry out a final goodbye to her father and take a sabbatical from her previous life we follow her on a really heartwarming journey of discovery as she makes new friends, puts down roots and finds love, such great characters I loved Constance and a really wholesome storyline Would highly recommend Thank you NetGalley for this early read
Willowell Woods are up for sale and Tilly has a plan but can she make her dream a reality.
A new book by Heidi Swain is always something to look forward to because it means a new adventure. As soon as I saw the cover it made me smile. The cover just screams summer and warmth and the story was definitely filled with warmth. The storyline included friendship, relationships, romance, new starts and the found family trope. I loved the setting of the story. Fernside and Willowell Woods sounded so magical and the more time I spent there while reading I wish I could live there.
I did feel really sad for Tilly because when we meet her she is visiting Willowell to say one last goodbye to her father and scatter his ashes. It’s during her visit that she notices that Willowell Woods are up for sale and the owner is Constance. Its seeing the woods that gives Tilly the idea of setting up a business where people can come and visit the woods and it will benefit them both physically and mentally (like a wellness retreat). So Tilly meets Constance and ends up staying in Constance’s garden apartment. I loved the connection between Tilly and Constance. They start off as friends but that slowly turns into something resembling a familial relationship like niece/aunt or grandmother/granddaughter. Tilly starts helping Constance with the upkeep of Fernside and despite Constance being fiercely independent she does accept help from Tilly. Then James makes an appearance. Their first meeting was very cute because James rescues Tilly’s runaway hat. It was like fate. As they get to know each other they both realise they have a lot in common. They both love the outdoors, nature and Willowell Woods and also like each other. What Tilly doesn’t realise is that James is Constance’s nephew and he and Constance are not on speaking terms. Things become complicated because Constance wants to sell Willowell Woods and James doesn’t. This does cause issues between Tilly and James and this is a hurdle they have to work to overcome.
Some of my favourite parts of the book were when Tilly and James spent time together. Especially the café scene when they talk about their favourite childhood books and realise their names are in the titles of Roald Dahl books. When James describes Constance as a cross between Miss Honey and The Trunchbull I thought this was the perfect description of Constance.
This is a story about healing, moving forward and taking a chance.
Walking on Sunshine is exactly the kind of novel that feels like stepping into a sun‑dappled clearing after a long, difficult season—gentle, hopeful, and full of heart. Heidi Swain brings Willowell, Suffolk to life with her trademark blend of warmth, community spirit, and a touch of quiet magic. Tilly’s arrival in Willowell, carrying her father’s ashes and the weight of recent heartbreak, sets the tone for a story about renewal and the courage it takes to begin again. Her connection to Willowell Woods is immediate and deeply felt, and I loved how her vision for the land becomes a catalyst not just for her own healing, but for the village itself.
James is a wonderfully drawn counterpart—rooted, loyal, and fiercely protective of the woods he’s loved since childhood. The chemistry between him and Tilly is soft and slow-burning, the kind that grows through shared purpose and gentle understanding rather than grand gestures. Their romance feels grounded and believable, shaped by the landscape around them.
Constance is a standout—wise, stubborn, and quietly vulnerable. Her storyline adds emotional depth, exploring what it means to let go without losing the past. Watching her navigate change was just as satisfying as the central romance.
Swain’s sense of place is, as ever, irresistible. Willowell Woods becomes a character in its own right—lush, restorative, and threaded with nostalgia. The novel radiates summer: riverbanks, woodland paths, and the comforting hum of village life.
This is a story about finding home—sometimes in a place, sometimes in a person, and sometimes in the version of yourself you’re finally ready to become. Uplifting, tender, and beautifully atmospheric, Walking on Sunshine is a perfect summer escape.
With thanks to Heidi Swain, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
What a perfect name for such a gorgeous book. I felt like I had my own personal woodland guide as the descriptions of the flowers, trees and wildlife in Willowell Woods had me picturing an idyllic spot. It’s been some time since I’ve been able to walk in any woods, but I am now craving a visit as soon as possible. I’m still not convinced that wild swimming is for me, but never say never.
I really took to Tilly. Her story was achingly relatable as she faced a new life without a close support network. I immediately understood her connection to Willowell, as I think we all have a place which evokes happy memories. What really captured my imagination was the idea of Fernside. A house that had filled her with wonder from a young age, and I just knew that it would figure strongly in her story.
Constance was a hoot! She put me in mind of the late Clarissa Dickson Wright of ‘The Two Fat Ladies’ fame. A blast from the past who was certainly not ready to relinquish control of her life. I am not sure whether this was just my mind filling in the blanks or intended, but the image was perfect. Her love for her home and nephew was evident despite the painful losses that she had endured. More than anything, it was her kindness and her eventual desire to reconnect with her community that I found heartwarming.
One of the many things I love about this author’s storytelling is how she builds communities that I would love to be a part of. Her characters are always fully developed, and the main characters' story arcs are perfectly handled. Of course, Willowell is a new location for Heidi’s books. Set in the Suffolk countryside, I have my fingers crossed for another visit, as there is plenty of potential with the characters from this book.
Tilly goes back to Willowell to scatter her Dad's ashes, a place where she and her brother have good memories of camping holidays with their Dad when they were children. She is at a crossroads in her life and when she stumbles across Willowell Woods she has a vision of what her future may be. To her delight, she finds out they are for sale by the delightful Constance, who, when she finds Tilly is between homes, invites her to stay in her annexe. Life is really looking up when she meets James, a lawyer torn between duty and his love for the outdoors. What could possibly go wrong...?
Walking on Sunshine is the perfect title for this novel and, indeed, for all Heidi Swain novels. Reading a Heidi Swain book is like opening a door on a sunnier, warmer world that I would love to inhabit every day. This novel is no exception. I loved the relationship between Tilly and Constance and the hint of mystery about Constance's past. It was obvious from early on that James was not all he seemed and I was holding my breath to see how that all worked out. All the inhabitants of Willowell were absolutely delightful (with one notable exception) and I would pack up my bags and move there tomorrow if I could! I wish also that the Greenman was my local (despite having a lovely local of my own) and that I could go and spend an evening there with Tilly and her friends, drinking the fiendishly strong local brew and eating a pizza. If anyone is looking for a total escape from the often fraught worries of the modern world, this is the book you have been waiting for. Wonderful!
As a big fan of Heidi Swain's books I was very excited to receive an early copy as I've read almost every one of her books (I'm aiming to finish the rest of them this year). Walking on Sunshine is set in a gorgeous new location; this time we're visiting Willowell in the gorgeous Suffolk countryside. With a new setting also comes new characters to fall in love with, and I certainly did just that!
Tilly has had a lot of upset and upheaval in her life recently, what with losing her beloved Dad and walking away from a job that was no longer making her fulfilled. Having spent many a happy childhood holiday in Willowell, Tilly and her brother decided it would be the perfect location to scatter their Dad's ashes and she books a few days in the idyllic village.
The village sounds absolutely beautiful and also welcoming to Tilly as a newcomer, especially when a possible business venture arises which was the last thing she expected from her visit. The locals all seem to accept Tilly with open arms, although getting around Constance might take a bit more work. Constance in her mid-eighties, has always lived in the same house and is very much set in her ways. Although as Tilly got her to know her I started to warm to her too; she's definitely a character you wouldn't want to cross.
James is a brilliant love interest for Tilly; they have a lot in common but it's clear he's not entirely happy with his job and it's holding him back from doing what he really loves. I enjoyed watching the two of them get to know each other as they spent more time together, and was of course hoping that they could move past some obstacles and get the happy ending they both deserve.
Once again Heidi Swain has created that magical blend of Romance and community spirit that I love so much in her books. The new setting was beautiful, and I'm really hoping for some more books about some of the other characters that I met along the way.

This was such a lovely and comforting heartwarming read. The story was lovely and heartwarming with a good cast of characters that felt like old friends. Heidi's stories always have beautiful place settings too. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author. 💝 Thank you to the publisher Simon & Schuster UK, the author Heidi Swain and Netgalley for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity from the publisher Simon & Schulster UK, to read and review "Walking on sunshine" by Heidi Swain, one of my favourite authors.
Previously, books written by Heidi Swain are based in Norfolk, but this book has jumped the county lines into Suffolk. It features a village called "Willowell", where the main character, Tilly used to spend childhood summer holidays with her Dad and brother.
Tilly returns to Willowell to scatter the her Father's ashes, which brings back many memories of her halcyon summers, especially the fields by the river and her dream house "Fernside". On her journey to Willowell she meets James, her "Meet Cute" who rescues her hat.
Tilly is at a crossroads in her life, she has given up the job that she hates, handed in her notice on the flat share and has the seeds of a business idea she would like to grow. She spots a "For Sale" sign for Willowell woods that would be the perfect location for her new venture.
Life takes a turn when Tilly meets the owner of the woods, Constance" who can make Tilly's dreams come true. But things like a love life can get in the way of Tilly'a plans.
I really enjoyed reading "Walking on sunshine". The writing flows beautifully, allowing the reader to visualise everything. In my opinion, this book is a must read!
I have read several previous books from Heidi Swain and really enjoyed them. So, I was looking forward her new novel Walking on Sunshine. Tilly has returned to the place where she shared happy memories with her dad and brother Zack when they were children. Now years on, she has returned to scatter her father ashes and It’s the last thing he wanted. She is also at the crossroads in her life. She has just left her job in HR and would like to start a new chapter. When she sees Fernside the lovely mansion and the beautiful idyllic woods that are next to it. It brings back memories of happier times. Then she sees a for sale as the woods are up for sale. An idea soon comes to her head that she would like to buy them. But its not all plain sailing to convince the elderly owner Constance to sell the woods to her. Especially with her new love interest and connection to the woods himself. This is another beautifully written book from Heidi Swain with the beautifully setting of the river and the woods that you can dream actually being there. The characters were very likeable and liked the relationships especially how Constance and Tilly got on together. I found the love interest part of the story a bit slow going but it ramped up towards the end. This is a great read for a lovely sunny day. 4 stars from me.
Thanks to @simon&shuster and @Netgalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Tilly is heading to the dreamy village of Willowell, Suffolk, for a fresh start and to honour her dad’s memory. But "rest and relaxation" quickly turns into "sparks and stand-offs" when she tries to buy the local woods. 🌲💖 The Drama: Tilly: Has a vision for the land that’s as bright as a summer morning. James: The protective (and very handsome) nephew who isn’t ready to let go of his childhood haunt. Constance: The heart of Fernside, learning that "new" doesn't always mean "scary." Why You’ll Love It: ✅ Ultimate Escapism: I could practically smell the river air and the ancient trees. ✅ Enemies-to-Lovers(ish): That delicious tension between Tilly and James? Chef’s kiss. 💋 ✅ Heart & Soul: It’s not just a romance; it’s about healing, community, and finding where you belong. "Will sparks turn into fireworks, or will the sun set on their summer romance?" 🎆
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Vibe: Picnic blankets, golden hour, and a heavy dose of "feel-good." Have you visited Willowell yet? Drop a 🍦 if this is going on your TBR pile! #WalkingOnSunshine #HeidiSwain #SummerReads #BeachReads #RomComBooks
Having read and enjoyed All Wrapped Up last autumn I was looking forward to another seasonal read from Heidi Swain- this time for summer.
Tilly is travelling to the village she spent many summers as a child to spread her late father’s ashes. Whilst there she soon remembers how happy she always felt there as a child and quickly makes some new friends in the locals. When she sees a for sale sign by Willowell Woods she decides to make enquiries with the owner as they could be exactly the new start she’s looking for. Constance the owner and Tilly soon form a lovely friendship, but little do they know they already have another connection in the form of Tilly’s new love interest.
I loved how the friendship between Tilly and Constance developed- they were both just what the other needed, and it was beautiful to see them support and care for each other. I was less of a fan of James at times and he frustrated me but I liked Tilly’s brother Zach and the friends she made in the village. Their found family felt very strong and the descriptions of the village were wonderful- it felt like you were there in the middle of summer time!
Thank you to the author, Simon & Schuster UK, and NetGalley UK for this ARC.
Aw, Heidi Swain does it again with a lovely story in a rural setting, guaranteed to warm your heart and make you wish you lived in the countryside. Looking for life change, heroine Tilly stops off for a few days at her childhood holiday haunt where she and her brother spent many happy summers with their widowed father. A few days becomes weeks as Tilly makes friends, meets imperious older woman Constance, who offers her a home, and begins plans for the woodland that Constance is selling and that Tilly hopes to buy. Add in handsome James, whom Tilly encounters in such a meet-cute way, and it looks like her future happiness is secure. But of course there are many obstacles to overcome before Tilly can look forward to a happy-ever-after,. The story races along, with the introduction of lively characters, challenges for Tilly both large and small, and a narrative that takes as many twists and turns as the woody pathways she hopes to own. I love Heidi Swain's books. They are the perfect antidote to the stresses and strains of everyday life, and with all that's going wrong with the world today, it's good to imagine a peaceful corner of it, where people care for each other and for the environment we're in danger of losing. A wonderful, feel-good read..
Another blast of lovely characters and cosy drama in this new release from the author, and it was lovely being introduced to the area of Willowell and all who live in her! And there's some fascinating characters in residence so there's lots to enjoy as their lives collide!
Tilly is at the heart of the story, looking for a new start after losing her father. She's drawn back to a village where they all had happy memories and she's hoping inspiration hits her while she's there as to what to do next with her life.
She's soon interested by a plot of land for sale and soon befriends the elderly lady, Constance, who is selling it and they soon build up a really lovely friendship - it's like they both needed a friend and came into each others' lives at the right time. It's fascinating to watch their stories play out, as Constance is dealing with her own issues and the woodland setting is just perfect. You get a real sense of the history of the area and homes and the importance of the nature setting works well for both their personalities.
this is one of those books you really lose yourself in and imagine yourself living in the area and meeting these people and I just hope we get to meet them all again in future books!
When Tilly was tasked with scattering her father's ashes, she chose to come to Willowswell, a small Suffolk village where she had spent many summer holidays with her father and brother, Zack, after their mother died. Between jobs and having just sold her father's house, and at the end of her seasonal job at an outdoor wellness centre, Tilly is at a crossroads in her life. She spots a small woodland for sale and having made enquiries at the village shop, so calls at Fernside House where the owner, Constance lives. Fernside, with its river location, was always one of Tilly's favourite houses so a chance to see inside was too good to miss. Constance seems to like Tilly's idea of using the wood as a wellness centre and agrees to sell. She also let's Tilly stay in her small annex after hearing why she is in Willoswell. However, not all of Constance's family are happy with the plan. Heidi has painted Willowswell beautifully, along with all the characters, who is really cares about. Will this be the start of a series? I would love hearing more about them and how Tillys wellness centre comes into being.
Heidi Swain's latest book takes the reader to Suffolk and the village of Willowell where we meet Tilly who is trying to find herself again following the death of her father and leaving her job. Willowell was the location for her childhood family holidays and it is where she has decided to scatter her dad's ashes.
Tilly always loved the river in Willowell and the house, Fernside, that stands alongside it. When she discovers that Willowell Woods are up for sale and that they are owned by the owner of Fernside, Tilly meets up with Constance, the owner, and an unlikely friendship forms. Willowell Woods seem like the answer to Tilly's dreams, until Constance's nephew, James, turns up and contests the sale...
It was lovely to have another standalone book from Heidi with new characters and locations. The setting of Fernside was idyllic and Constance was a delight - the slightly grumpy older character with a heart of gold underneath. The friendship that develops between Tilly and Constance feels very natural.
And here is another beautiful summer read from the fantastic Heidi Swain! Tilly is tasked with the difficult task of scattering her father's ashes, alone, at a place she and her brother have the fondest of memories. She travels to the heart of Suffolk, to a little village, Willowwell, and finds a small Air B'n'B for a few nights before planning on travelling to her brother wherever he may be working at the time. On arrival, she finds a stretch of woodland for sale adjoining a house, Fernside, which she used to dream about as a child, But would she be able to buy this land and set up her dream business there? Tilly meets some fantastic characters on her trip, including Constance, the owner of the house and woods, and a mysterious lawyer, James, who may just steal her heart... but things are never that straightforward. Secrets emerge, or rather unmentioned information, which causes a clash of interests, that could derail everything she has dreamed of. I really enjoyed this emotive story, with a positive main character, and so much joy amid the confusion.
The aptly named Walking on Sunshine is a lovely tale of new beginnings, living with grief and finding your place in life. The setting is rural Suffolk, a place I don't know, but lyrical descriptions make it easy to visualise as the story unfolds. Tilly heads to her childhood holiday haunt to say a last goodbye to her father, whom she nursed through his final illness. Tilly is sad, but having cut ties with her old life, she looks forward to something new, yet undefined. It's a story about new friendships and discovering who you really are. Tilly's friendship with Constance is the story's mainstay, and it develops into something that enriches both their lives. The gentle yet conflicted romance with James is realistic and charming, but what really resonates is the changes Tilly makes in her life through Willowell Woods. I like the characters, the community, the rural setting and the story's heartwarming qualities. I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
I always enjoy Heidi's books - and this one takes us to Suffolk and introduces us to a new cast of characters to fall in love with!
Tilly is at a crossroads in her life. She returns to Willowell, a village that holds many happy childhood memories, to scatter her father's ashes - and whilst there she discovers an opportunity to build a business and a life in a community that has started to steal her heart.
Heidi always does a brilliant job of creating a lovely sense of place - and Willowell certainly sounds like a place I'd like to visit. There is a delightful intergenerational friendship between Tilly and feisty octogenarian Constance, a great supporting cast and a will they won't they romance - and it all adds up to the kind of feel good read about about finding where you belong that leaves you with a smile on your face. If you are looking for a bit of escapism and a feel-good summer read then this doesn't disappoint.
Tilly and her brother used to visit Willowell in Suffolk for their holidays with their dad every year after their mum died. They made some great memories of the area so when their dad died Tilly decided to go and scatter his ashes on the river opposite a house, Fernside. The next day Tilly decided to have a closer look at Fernside and saw a notice in the woods next to it advertising the woods were for sale. She was looking for a new direction in her life and had an idea she could run a business from the woods helping people to love nature as much as she did. She met Constance, the owner of the house and woods and built up a friendship with her leading to her renting a small apartment in the grounds of Fernside while Tilly can work out if she should buy the woods and Constance whether she should sell them to her.
For me Heidi Swain is an automatic purchase these days. I love immersing myself in the worlds that she creates and spending time with the characters. This book is set in the vicinity of Willowell Woods, which is a new setting, but one I hope that we will get to return to sometime
I enjoyed following the adventures of Tilly, James, Constance and the various other characters that we meet as part of this story. The overall tone is warm and welcoming and indicative of the cosy read that we know we can expect from Heidi.
This book will be one I will go on purchase when available, gifting to others and recommending for a great summer read. Perfect for on holiday or even just at home wanting to escape into a good book.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster for sending me an early advanced copy of this book. This review is my own honest opinion
I haven't read one of Heidi's books for a long time due to other commitments, but as soon as I started reading this one it immediately brought back to me how much I love her books. In this one we have a new setting, Willowell in Suffolk, but it has all the ingredients that I really enjoy. A glorious setting, main characters that I feel for plus support from the local community. The woodland scenes take me back many, many years to when I used to walk through the woods on the way to school with the carpets of bluebells and primroses and can understand what Tilly was trying to create here. Suffice it to say that I read this in one day and hope that there will be many more set in Willowell to come. Very highly recommended. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
Another great read from Heidi. This made me look forward to the brighter days of Summer, the book is set in Suffolk which is a place I have never been to but now would love to go. It seemed the perfect setting for this book. It is about three different people who have their own issues they need to deal with. Tilly needs a fresh start after losing her dad. Constance is struggling at her age but would never ask for help, and James is trying to put a spanner in the works. I loved seeing how they intertwined with one another and I loved the way Tilly is so caring, it bought a huge comfort to me. I felt as though I wanted to help Tilly and her plans for what she was going to do, I really felt involved even though I was not. It was a great story to while away a few hours and I cannot wait to read Heidi’s next book and see what that one is all about
Tilly arrives in Willowell ready for change but with a sombre task to fulfil first. Scattering her father's ashes leads her to an environment she remembers well from her childhood and establishes Tilly's love of nature and a certain woodland in particular. Tilly's brother is close to her but spends a lot of time working abroad. However you sense the link between Willowell and their childhood memories.
Tilly spends time in Willowell and meets up with Constance, the owner of Willowell Woods. Some find the elderly lady difficult but Tilly and Constance form a close friendship, with Tilly recognizing that Constance needs support, though she is loath to admit it.
With friendships forming and romance bubbling below the surface. this is a warm and inviting story. Thanks to the publisher
In true Heidi fashion a lovely gentle read, set in idyllic countryside with some interesting characters. So, why the three stars you ask? I found Tilly and James's, our main characters, lack of communication rather frustrating and if she had told him her intentions at the beginning this could have been a much shorter book! Ok, so that's a bad idea but it was frustrating none the less. I realise as a device for the book this was needed but I just wanted to bang their heads together. That being said, it would be lovely to go back to this setting and see how another couple end up, Zach and Kaya. I enjoyed the story in general and enjoyed some of the other characters too. It's a very sweet read and as Heidi writes in such an easy to read style this book is ideal for all, no sex, swearing or horror. A great summer easy read.
You can't go wrong with a Heidi Swain book, especially when you read them in the right season. You will always feel completely absorbed into the story.
This is the story of Tilly, lover of the outdoors and all things nature related, who is taking some time out to find herself after her father's death. She returns to their childhood happy place, Willowell, to scatter his ashes and reflect. Things take a turn and a potentially life changing opportunity soon arises.
Along the way we meet Constance, the elderly owner of Fernside, which Tilly used to admire from afar as a child. We meet Zach, Tilly's adventuring brother, Melody and Kaya from the village shop, and mysterious and handsome James. This cast of characters were so endearing, I loved them all!
Beautiful setting, great characters, and a believable and loveable main character made this a perfect summer read!
