This book makes it to the my personal list of the best books on health and nutrition I have ever read. The author does excellent job explaining the whole digestive process and the nutrition-disease connection in simple terms accompanied by lots of practical examples and great illustrations. I'd say illustrations (comics style) are excellent companion here as they help you remember important theories and ideas (I could never again read, think or talk about adrenaline without picturing that zebra-lion image in my mind! Hilarious! But it does excellent job!). The author also includes menus and recipes to help you on your journey towards health and/or recovery. Useful food combination sheets are included at the end of the book for each of the three phases that could make planning easier. There is a section for personal notes, too.

A must read for everyone interested in health and nutrition and for everyone who does want to take full responsibility for his own health instead of blindly blaming the doctors for not doing their job. I would say this is also an interesting read for anyone who is merely interested in the concepts behind contemporary 21st century health-nutrition approach as well as for anyone who wants to know how his body works. It is much better than a boring anatomy book, I tell you!

This is a really great guide to cleaning up your eating habits in order to prevent health problems as well as get rid of current health problems. His explanations of the digestive system and the problems associated with each part can be understood by practically anyone. His writing is very easy to read and somewhat humorous (with some mini comics throughout)! This book has definitely helped me in my journey to a healthier lifestyle!

It seems a little dated. The letters are a bit self congratulatory. There is absolutely some good information in the book. Some of the content is likely invalid in today's understanding of health. There are some clear biases against some groups and dietary paths and the book ends on a heavy religious note. Still a decent read.

Naturopathic focused book - not exactly what I was expecting. It describes the body system well in a way that's easy to understand along with its humourous cartoon drawings. Overall not the book for me - rather aggressive in the way of detoxifying the body and ways of elimination for my liking. Not doubting that it doesn't work - I'm sure it does but it just wasn't for me.

Great book when it comes to understanding your digestion and how to heal it. The author is quite humerus, I enjoyed the little comic drawings throughout the book. I was, however, very thrown off by the heavily religious note at the end.

This was a great book for describing how our digestive system affects our health and how we are damaging it.
Matsen does a great job explaining things in terms that anyone can easily understand, using metaphors and examples. The high level explanations were perfect for an overview with as much detail as needed to get the point across.
It's amazing to read exactly how much what we eat and how our digestive system works to keep us healthy.

The only thing I didn't like was the patient letters. It seemed that the point of them was to show how Dr Matsen is great and less about the patient. I found that annoying and could have done without it.

Has changed and enhanced the way I look at and eat food. Makes so much sense, and illuminates the underline really vital truths about health that authors such as Joel Fuhrman (Eat to Live) and Sally Fallon(Nourishing Traditions) seem to miss or skim over (despite the fact that I love both books).
Makes it clear that half of health is HOW we eat, rather than just WHAT we eat. Since I have put the two together, my health has improved beyond what I could've imagined.

This book is amazing! It is written in a way that anyone can understand. This doctor did an amazing job through words and cartoons of explaining how the digestive system works, and how it links to chronic conditions and disease. This is a must-read.

Matsen describes the human digestive process in an easy and enjoyable manner. Super-quick read, but pertinent information. For all who are interested in the functioning of the human body as it relates to food, this book is for you.

After all my years of disappointment with conventional doctors and seeking healthier alternatives on my own, I discovered through this book that something else existed -- naturopathic physicians. This is an informative and intriguing book, though the plan outlined isn't for everyone.
