Rate this book
Jess leaves the town of Bradford and is on the hunt for the killer, Keith Ellis.

Before he takes Ellis’s body to the town marshal in Raleigh, Texas, he gets information that Ben Hannon, a second wanted killer, has been seen hanging around the town of Murphy, which is on the way to Raleigh.

He heads to Murphy and finds Hannon staying in an old shack just outside town. He kills Hannon and takes both bodies to Raleigh to turn in for the bounty.

When he reaches Raleigh, Rudy Vance, a top gunslinger, shows up. He's been looking to challenge Jess for a long time and he wants to make a real spectacle of the gunfight. He sends out a wire, letting everybody know when and where it's going to be.

Jess decides not to waste his time and wait for the gunfight to happen. Instead, he goes after another wanted man named Toby Massey, heading to Torrington to hunt him down.

After finding Massey and bringing his body back to Raleigh, the gunfight between Jess and Ruby Vance takes place.

Then, Jess gets a message from United States Marshal Frank Reedy, ordering him to go after the Gleason gang who have committed their third bank robbery, killing two people in the process.

Bodine travels to Raleigh to join Jess on the hunt. After they catch the first of the gang, the huge timber wolf, Shadow, mysteriously shows up again.

Excellent story, as usual.

I really enjoyed this Jess Williams story, mostly because Jess road with old friends and also helped people that needed help. I do wish Shadow had a little action, like jumping in and saving the guys. Other than that it was a great story and I am ready for book One Hundred and Forty Five! Let Shadow take out a bad guy or two!

A soft 5. I dont know why but this seems better then the last few Jess Williams stories I read. Still predictable. Same story parameters. The writing seems more cohesive though. Jess seems more settled. And of course it's always good to see Shadow.

Road what a fan.

I've read all the Jess Williams books in the series. I guess you could say I 'm a fan. I like the way they are written, usually adding a good story line and new character or two and using old like they are family. Please keep up the series.

Another great read

I have read all this series in order. There are a few 'Western series," as I call them, may be as good but none are better.
