The Guardian of Willowbrook

The Guardian of WillowbrookWhen Father Henry begins to see visions of a mysterious woman in the shadows of Willowbrook, he believes he’s losing his mind. But the woman is real—at least to him. She knows the sins of his parishioners, whispers secrets in the confessional, and leads him down a path of truth... and ruin.

Her name is Ravenna.
A fallen angel.

Once the guardian of Jesus himself, she has long since abandoned heaven. But something ties her to Henry... and to a darkness that begins to haunt them both.

As Ravenna reveals the story of her fall, Henry is forced to question his faith, his calling, and the strange evil that seems to stalk him from the shadows.

A gothic, spiritual thriller about temptation, grace, and the burden of knowing too much.

Some truths should never be revealed…

JKD succeeds in crafting a story that is genuinely compelling in its examination of the burden of knowing too much—a weight Henry must bear as his spiritual and human desires collide. While the book's deep dive into theological themes and its "churchy" atmosphere may not appeal to every reader, the author's ability to create a mood of brooding suspense and moral complexity keeps the pages turning.

This is not a book that I would have picked to read, had I correctly identified the subject matter / genre. Nonetheless I carried on to the end. The bulk of the story is about the life of Jesus from the point of view of a fallen angel, as recounted to a parish priest.

Thankfully it was not a long book, so I was able to get to the end fairly quickly. I didn't see the point of the story frankly.

I don't read religious books, having no interest in religion. Had I realised the content I would not have started reading it. I would classify it as a Christian theme.

I received a free copy of this novel from the author and I'm pleased to offer my independent, fair and honest review.

Okay, this rating reflects solely on the fact that the story was not for me. I did not quite realize before reading what I was going into. I have personal opinions that this story does not align with.

The writing was fine. It was a quick and easy read. I felt like some of the middle part of the novel was too long. This would have been better as a novella maybe. Maybe I wished for more on Henry and there was just too much exposition on Ravenna.

If you are into fiction based off religion/Christianity then I would say give it a try!

Chapters were too short to keep me interested

The characters weren't given enough time in the chapters to really build. I didn't connect with them at all. The descriptions of the setting was beautiful and the plot is interesting, I just couldn't bring myself to care what happened to the people.

The Guardian of Willowbrook is both lyrical and atmospheric that feels like stepping into a forgotten fairytale. JKD has a gift for prose that is hauntingly beautiful. I was immediately pulled into the mystery of Willowbrook. It’s a story about duty, secrets, and the bridge between worlds. I love how it balances “saving the world” with the character-focused storytelling.
