Brennon Cree made a mistake.

Hitting on his best friend was the worst thing he's ever done, and he doesn't exactly have a squeaky-clean record. When he's given a chance to move on, he makes another mistake and seizes the opportunity. Which lands him in the bed of an alpha from another planet.

Gunho Idris is hiding because of his rut.

The last thing he expects is for a hot guy to suddenly land in his lap. As an alpha unable to scent omegas, the second his nose picks up on Brennon, it's game over for both of them. Gunho might not be from Vitality, but he's not about to let Brennon slip through his grasp, and he can be every bit as obsessive as the devils known to rule the planet.

This is a novella that takes place in the Devils of Vitality universe. It's a high heat, low angst story with a HEA and all the possessiveness the full-length novels deliver. This book can be read as a standalone, but features characters introduced in These Silent Stars.

Trigger This is a Dark MM Sci-Fi Horror Romance with omegaverse elements, which means there are many themes that some might find disturbing. Some of these include, but are not limited to, dub-con, forced proximity, and explicit sexual content not suitable for all readers. Please be sure to read the Author's Note for a complete list of warnings! HEA guarantee!

Again, this author demonstrated her exceptional talent for crafting dark romance narratives that draw me in. There were moments throughout the story when I found myself torn between my feelings for the central couple. Just when I thought I had their dynamic figured out, she skillfully introduced twists that shifted my perspective, leaving me oscillating from uncertainty to complete delight.

Brennon truly captivated me; his character was unapologetically a spoiled brat, and I found that energy incredibly entertaining. Being inside his head was a wild ride, especially given his remarkable self-awareness. He perfectly embodied that type of person who would confidently assert, "If you go low, I go lower," and I relished that audacious attitude.

Gunho pleasantly surprised me in ways I did not anticipate. Initially, I expected him to fall into the archetype of the typical possessive alpha male; however, he defied this expectation. While he indeed displayed those traits, he also revealed a tender side and an unexpected vulnerability. His genuine moments of insecurity added a layer of depth to his character, especially when he confided in Brennon about his longing for their relationship to flourish and his heartfelt desire to build a family with him.

Their relationship begins in a whirlwind of toxicity, with sharp edges and emotional turmoil, but as the narrative unfolds, it transforms into a somewhat healthier dynamic by the conclusion of the novella. Are they an ideal couple? Absolutely not. Yet, by the end, they find themselves in a toxic relationship that cleverly skirts the line of abuse. Their consuming love and obsession for one another maintain a captivating balance between toxicity and a kind of healthiness that I often crave in dark romance.

In conclusion, I should have anticipated that this author would masterfully navigate such complex themes in a short novella. Her unique ability to weave dark romance with compelling character development and emotional depth consistently keeps me engaged and satisfied.

If you absolutely dislike one of the main characters and don't understand the other, how can you love a book?
I love the author, but unfortunately my love for her writing style wasn't enough for this story.
Perhaps the problem for me is that it was a rather short book compared to the author's usual length.
It's a good story and fits perfectly into this series, but the complexity and psychological aspects of both characters and their backgrounds make it difficult to grasp everything properly in such a short space. For me, at least, there's a lack of balance. The characters have the familiar dark qualities we've come to expect from this series and find their perfect counterparts. But here, this happens at the very end and rather quickly. The brainwashing that the reader experiences doesn't have time to really sink in, and yes, I miss the inner monologues that make the characters' “transformation” understandable.
In the end, I really liked how Brennon and Gunho fit together. I could understand them very well. I wouldn't say that I learned to love them, because the intense, dark scenes were still too present at the end. But I really like the twist that everything took.
I know many readers are bothered by the length of the author's books and the endless inner monologues. I don't usually like that either, but here it's clearly missing. I would have preferred to be able to dive deeper into the characters' thoughts.
As for the Omegaverse theme, if you like the genre, you should probably avoid this book, as it is in no way comparable to the classic stories from this genre. It's different.
But not in a good way. Basically, it takes everything that could be bad about relationships between omegas and alphas and embraces it, ignoring everything that could be positive.
To put it another way... it's so dark and so NOT consensual that it's hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel.
Read at your own risk.

“I’m going to make you so full,” the alpha growled, “you’ll never be satisfied with anyone else ever again. You’ll dream of my cock, beg me to take you. Should I do that, pretty lover? Should I pump you so full of my come you can’t take a single step without me dripping from your abused hole? Make you ride me until you’re so blown open, it takes hours for you to close back up?” 🫣😳🫣

“Your life belongs to me now.” Gunho cocked his head, giving him a sultry once-over. “As does your body, and your mind. I’ll consume all of you, mind and body, blood and bone. Hopes and dreams. I’ll infiltrate your thoughts and take over your heart, and you won’t be able to stop me, pretty lover, no matter how much you resist. If you give in now, I promise to go easy on you. But if you continue to push me away, I’ll make you work for it when the time comes.” 😵😵😵

Great addition to the Devils of Vitality series!

Gunho is definitely unhinged enough to fit right in on Vitality 😂 I liked getting his backstory and the information on Alpha's.

It took me a while to place Brennon, it's been a long time since I read Kel and Rin's book. He's possibly the most stubborn person in the series! He can't make anything easy for himself 😂

I actually really liked the relationship dynamics between Gunho and Brennon though, and the decision Brennon makes about the antidote felt like a romantic gesture - or what passes for one with these Vitals...!

Tropes: forced proximity, age gap
Feels: 1/5
Steam*: 2.5/5
Kinks: Noncon, Dub con, spanking, knotting
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings/representation: Drugging, Drunk sex, aphrodisiacs used against their will, forced omega heats, shitty family members

Other person drama: Brennon is trying to get over a hopeless crush on his friend when he first hooks up with Gunho. There are references to past hookups of both MMCs but neither are interested in anyone else

3.5 stars

Brennon is 21 and in college. He's from a wealthy family but his parents are neglectful and he doesn't live up to their expectations, so they don't treat him well. He's got an inferiority complex as a result of not being loved by his parents, not having enough friends, and not being anything special thanks.

Gunho is in his mid 30s, bisexual, and an alpha. He's from another planet. He's been a General. His grandfather doesn't have any heirs, and wants to baby drop him into providing him with an heir and then he wants to off Gunho, because he doesn't like him or trust him. Gunho is hopping planets trying to avoid his grandfather's machinations. He locked himself away during his latest rut but Sila throws Brennon into the room with him, because he nonchalantly has suggested Brennon should get over his crush on Rin by fucking someone else. Brennon evokes a unique reaction/compatibility with Gunho and Gunho decides to make Brennon his mate against his will.

This had potential, but it didn't really deliver on any romance. It's supposed to be a dark romance, but where was the romance?! At every opportunity for some romance to sneak in, it was shut down. Gunho set his sights on Brennon, but it was expedient/interesting to him, and he was always practical and the only emotion he expressed was possessiveness. He never seemed in love. And Brennon told us time and time again in his internal monologue and words right up until the epilogue that he didn't love Gunho, just liked the sex, and wasn't even sure he could be capable of love. They were both so selfish and never put the other one first. I get that in a dark romance that starts with noncon that it will start out selfish, but it needs to eventually get to the point of putting your love interest first and setting them free to see if they will choose you. Eventually there was one moment at the very end where that kind of happened, but it wasn't romance on either side when it did happen. Neither were in love with each other at that point.

This is totally about my personal preferences, but this book just came off cold to me. Even with the hot sex, often it was fade to black because Brennon lost all coherence when they had sex, so the intimacy was lacking. There's so many missed opportunities for building intimacy. I needed to see unwitting platonic touch, unable to stop oneself from touching their love, snuggling at night even if they are prickly and deny they want it. I need to see that they are mentally preoccupied with thoughts of the love interest.

Some notable moments:

"“This is just for tonight. No names.” Something strange rumbled at the center of Gunho’s chest, and a wave of possessiveness overwhelmed him. He hadn’t gone all his life unable to smell a potential mate, just to be reduced to a one-night stand by the first candidate. He had to claim him now. Make him see there was no escaping. Make him see how perfectly matched they were, so he changed his mind and agreed to the bond."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Chani writing omegaverse? COUNT ME IN! This was an amazing novella with all the good stuff - forced proximity, heats and ruts, a possessive asshole MC and hot hot hotttt smut.

Brennon is no one’s person. Overlooked by everyone, including his parents and his best friend Rin, he makes the mistake of trying to drown his sorrows with alcohol… and ends up in the lap of sexy alpha, Gunho.

Gunho is royalty from a planet where people have ABO designations. He knows that Brennon is from Vitality and therefore not the omega he desperately craves, but he can’t help but be drawn to his delicious scent. He’s used to taking what he wants and Brennon is no exception - and if that means forcing Bren to experience a synthetic omega heat cycle to keep him close? So be it.

Uggghhh Gunho was SUCH an asshole but by golly do I love Chani’s asshole MCs 😹💕 Possessive, overwhelming, commanding - he is a walking red flag and I LOVED him! And Brennon is just a black cat personality who wants to be loved but pushes everyone away… until he physically can’t any more!

Please remember this is a DARK ROMANCE so please check the trigger warnings before starting 💕

Read Devil May Hunt for:
✨ Omegaverse (No mpreg)
✨ Black Cat x Feral Retriever
✨ Non-con, dub-con
✨ Forced heat cycles
✨ Forced proximity
✨ Walking red flag MC
✨ I’ll fuck you ‘til you love me

Thanks as always to Chani for letting me read an early copy to do some proofreading 💕 It’s available on 31st July!

This was my first Chani Lynn Feener and I'm not totally sure how I felt about it. I've avoided her in the past because I'm not a big sci-fi reader and I'm very rarely in the mood to handle dubcon/noncon which seems to be a big theme in her work. Maybe this would have worked a little better for me if I had read the series this is connected with (one MC and all of the side characters associated with him are obviously from other books) but I'm not sure it would have made a huge difference in the end because I don't think the writing itself worked for me.

With this being a novella, things were set up quickly and moved at a good pace. The basic plot was perfectly fine and it was interesting to see a different take on omegaverse. But I didn't connect strongly with either MC and I didn't find their relationship romantic enough - possessive enough, yes but not romantic enough. Pretty much all of Brennon's insecurities stemmed from feeling like he'd never been chosen by anyone - that people forgot about him, didn't really care about him. Because of that, Gunho really needed to show that he had chosen Brennon and that he wasn't just being led by pheromones. I think there was some effort shown but it wasn't quite enough for me. I think I needed a bit more of those blatant reassurances - I'm a glutton for that sort of thing when there's an insecure MC.

Also, this may be a strange complaint, but, the sex scenes were really weird to me. It felt like for every single one we were thrown in the middle of it. I guess because it was often rut/heat sex and Brennon kept passing out? Idk. I think there was only one scene (the bj) where things were shown from start to finish. Not a big deal I guess just something else that didn't work for me.

The author states in the author's note that this is a little different from her normal fare but I still think it was enough for me to know that these probably aren't for me. No shade, just not a good match.

Nicknames: pretty lover

“He doesn’t know what it’s like to drown. On land. In front of everybody.”

Should I pump you so full of my come you can’t take a single step without me dripping from your abused hole? Make you ride me until you’re so blown open, it takes hours for you to close back up?” That was gross, so why did Brennon’s stomach flip at the aggressive dirty talk?

“Your lineage isn’t important right now. Breeding you is.” Vitals couldn’t get pregnant. But if the alpha wanted to try so badly, who was Brennon to stop him?

“You’re mine,” he confirmed. “You’ll still be mine while you’re running away. You’ll be mine at the Academy, in this house, on or off the planet…You get the point. It doesn’t matter what you believe, what matters is the truth.

You will love me, Brennon.” He grunted. “Unfortunately for you, that’s one thing you can’t take.” “Then I’ll earn it.” “Good luck.”

Safety (may contain spoilers)

SA/rape: Dubious consent throughout between MCs - coercion and drugging (illegal drug that changes a person's biology)

Other person drama: None but Brennon starts the book trying to get over his friend who rejected him - he realizes he wasn't actually into him in the first place but it was obviously a big plot point in another book that carried over here.

“Everything is trying to drown me.”
“I’m not. I can give you anything you want, pretty lover. All I ask in return is for you to be mine. Is that so much to ask for? You feel like you’re drowning? Let me pull you up. I won’t let you stay under the weight of the world.”

This book feels like a copy-paste of Devil May Breathe (Pavel and Zane’s book). Brennon and Gunho had the same dynamic as Zane and Pavel and I’m glad this one is a novella and not a full-length novel like the other one, because basically 90% of both stories is just one character chasing the other while the other refuses to accept what’s right in front of them.

“I’m not leaving the planet, and I’m not living with you.”
“Mates can’t live apart.”
“I’m not your fucking mate!”

Zane (from devil may breathe) and Brennon are the kind of characters who wants someone to be their everything, and the moment they have it, they reject it. I was already tired of that back and forth by the end of the novella.

“Baby, you’ve got to work with me here. I’m trying so hard to be gentle with you. Can’t you see that?”

Anyways, it was a good quick read. I liked seeing the Varun twins, Kelevra and I missed my baby Berga.

“I don’t even know if I’m capable of falling in love with you. But I refuse to give you up either. I’m not letting go. You’re stuck with me, alpha, whether you like it or not. Whether you regret it now or later. You’re mine.”

Omega!verse with a Dark, Delicious twist!

Fans and newcomers won't be disappointed in this delightful novella. Please read the warnings of the book carefully, as the author is not playing around with the content.

Brennon and Gunho are both incredibly interesting characters with so much depth, even for a novella! Omega!verse set in a sci-fi genre means there's many fascinating factors about the universe to play with. You've got the classic tropes of heats, ruts, and possessive alphas, but the author really has a way of making the genre seem fresh and new.

Brennon is very relatable in a variety of ways, and the readers really get to connect with him via his heartbreak and insecurities. But he's also a brat and we love that about him too.

Gunho is wonderfully possessive and confident, yet there's definitely some sweetness to this man as well. His dialogue is some of my favorite. He may not 'technically' be a Devil of Vitality like other characters in the book universe, but he's got the dangerous vibes of one, so familiar readers won't feel he's lacking!

The spicy content is 10/10. It focused and utilized the Omega!verse tropes that we all know and love, but with unique twists and thrilling developments.

I will say that while it is technically a standalone, reading previous books (at least "These Silent Stars") really gives it the full experience.

Overall:

Story: 4.5/5 (I want a whole book but that's just me being greedy)
Characters: 5/5
Spicy: 5/5
Writing: 5/5

Yessss I’m so happy that Brennon got his story and it’s even an A/B/O one, I’m totally into it and devoured the book. One thing is sure, same like the Devils, Gundho is intense and when he decided that he wanted Brennon, he did everything in his power to have him and to make him understand that he was now is. But Brennon is more than he just lets it seem, he’s way more cunning and he’s not reading to let Gundho have things go his way. So be reading for some back and forth, some intense tension, some rut and heat and a possessive strike.

Also love all the cameos, and I’m always up for more Devils of Vitality, love this series !

Another amazing story! I loved this one! It was short but it felt like a full story. I enjoyed the ABO dynamics. Brennon is so dramatic and I loved it. The banter was fun and the spice was spicey. Gunho won me over in the end. I liked the glimpses of Sila and Rin. Sila is so chaotic and I love it.

Shoutout to the author for the chance to read this early and I can’t wait to read more from her!

This one popped up in emails and I immediately clicked the link. Improved my mood for the day. It was shorter than the others and felt it. What I like about the series is that anything goes. The characters can be from whatever planet and that's the new norm introduced to Vitality. Part of it felt like an excuse to do an alpha/omega story. The other part felt like it was part of the world. Nice to see the twins again. Pretty much everything covered by the trigger warnings. Would've liked it to be a bit longer. Both were complex characters but kept contained. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I have already pre-ordered on Amazon.

ABO spicy deliciousness! ❤️

The cover for this book is so gorgeous. 😍

Oh shit, I think I love Brennon. And it all started because Sila was like, I've got a problem... I'm gonna chuck Brennon at it. 😂
The part where Rin was backing Bren up made me really happy.

I love how possessive and all-consuming Gunho is. He's an ass but also can be very sweet once he gets everything he wants. I love how powerful and sexy he is. Brennon is so smart and his stubbornness and self-doubt is so relatable. He's sassy and dramatic and I love him. I love how the two need each other and help each other.

I love that this book is ABO. This little story is so perfect. Chani Lynn Feener is the best!

I think my expectations were too high. Chani doing Omegaverse?!? Hell yeah 👏🏻👏🏻 but we got very little heat/rut sex.
Sadly it wasn’t as hot as other Chani books. 😫

The plot was a bit meh and Brennon was a bit of an asshole. The parent plot line never delivered or was resolved. Too many scenes off page. Too much sex off page?!? Gasp WTH 🤦🏼‍♀️

It was a novella that should have been a full book. Especially when there was an evil uncle. It could have been super interesting but fizzled.

brennon cree is a mess. hitting on his best friend was already a disaster, and drowning his heartbreak with alcohol just makes everything worse. cue mistake number two: ending up in the lap (and the bed) of gunho idris, a dangerously hot alpha from another planet.

brennon. overlooked, insecure, and constantly pushing people away, he’s the definition of a black cat omega. bratty, self-destructive, but also heartbreakingly relatable in the way he just wants to be chosen.

gunho. royal, dangerous, obsessive. he’s a walking red flag and doesn’t care who knows it. commanding, manipulative, filthy-mouthed—yet somehow he still gives flashes of sweetness that make him impossible to resist. he may not be a devil of vitality by birth, but he’s every bit as obsessive and possessive as one. once he scents brennon, it’s game over.

∘₊✧the plot✧₊∘

this novella may be short but it really delivers. it is high heat, low angst, but somehow still manages to give us so much character depth. brennon is messy, bratty, insecure, and i just wanted to wrap him in a blanket while also shaking him for his terrible choices. he is the ultimate black cat omega, all sharp edges and bad decisions, but under it all he just wants someone to choose him.

and then there is gunho. he is supposed to be hiding during his rut but the moment he scents brennon it is game over. he is a royal alpha, dangerous, filthy, manipulative, basically a walking red flag and i loved every second of it. the man really said “you are mine now” and then backed it up by forcing a heat cycle. who gave him the right to be this unhinged and hot at the same time. their dynamic is pure chaos with resentment, temptation, bratty pushback, and then the kind of rut and heat explosion that leaves you breathless. i wanted it to be a full length novel so badly...

just adding this quote here :

“your life belongs to me now. as does your body, and your mind. i’ll consume all of you, mind and body, blood and bone. hopes and dreams. i’ll infiltrate your thoughts and take over your heart, and you won’t be able to stop me, pretty lover, no matter how much you resist. if you give in now, i promise to go easy on you. but if you continue to push me away, i’ll make you work for it when the time comes.”

∘₊✧final thoughts✧₊∘

this is omegaverse but darker, dirtier, and way more addictive. chani lynn feener knows how to serve us the perfect mix of obsession, filthy intensity, and those little flashes of vulnerability that make you feral. it is primal, it is deliciously toxic, and it does not hold back.

if you love: bratty black cat omegas who just want to be chosen, feral alphas who would literally burn worlds to claim their person, and spice that leans hard into obsession, devil may hunt is absolutely it.

3,5 ⭐️ Chani L.Feener dipping her tippy toes into omegaverse…count me in. Now book has all the typical traits of her previous books -possessive, cnc, slightly psychotic mc. Add the omegaverse aspect, fine tuning cuz it’s intergalactic and you get the picture. Surprisingly sweet ending. What I found strange and laught was the use of “French press” and “Stockholm syndrome” yeaaah why?
