Virentofta, in the Draconis Combine, is guarded by the mercenary Seventh Hell’s Brigade. When reports of these dreaded raiders reaches the planet, the Brigade's colonel wants to cut and run. But he called for the vote too late.

The invaders have arrived. Their ships are inbound this very minute. And soon, the men and women of the Brigade will be in the fight of their lives against an enemy they’ve never heard of, but which certainly sounds ominous…a force called the Smoke Jaguars…

A great story about what it was like staring down the Clan steamroller as a small mercenary detachment. It starts with the scuttlebutt of words falling on the Draconis Combine periphery but no hard facts and then just jumps into overdrive.

The mech part of this story was less compelling than the infantry part. Sure, the Clan weapons are punching harder and further out but there wasn't that same sense of absolute dread that the infantry story gave. The groundpounders reaction to seeing Elementals for the first time, then up close was very well done.

The whole side plot about the Colonel was....extraneous? Not necessary? Kind of just there and then gone? Not sure what it's purpose was given how the story plays out.

All in all, a great read.

A throw back to the early days of the Clan Invasion - works nicely as a stand alone story, enjoyed the fact not everyone was a hero!
