In 1889, most of the city of Seattle burnt to the ground. The residents rebounded by using the ruin remnants to create the foundation for the new and improved city.
In 1965, Bill Spediel struck a deal with the new metropolis to turn a profit on the tragedy from almost a century earlier. Thus, The Underground was born, immediately spawning talk of ghosts.
In recent years, the myths morphed into stories of actual people living among the trash and filth that had built up beneath the city. These mythical people had become mockingly referred to as groundlings by the locals.
As the city is now held in the grips of a serial killer, Oz Seidon can't seem to focus on anything other than the groundlings. Having never put much stock into them before, a recent rash of sightings has piqued his curiosity. Oz intends to disprove the legend, using the research as an excuse to focus on something other than death, that is, until he stumbles upon one and learns how close to this story he really is.
NYT Best Selling Author for the anthology Wicked After Dark!
I have been a fan of realistic fantasy all my life. The idea of alternate explanations for the mundane, fascinates me. As a woman with deep southern roots, I am not one who is quick to dismiss the otherworldly. However, the idea that our world isn't as big and foreboding as it seems, also plays heavily into my writing.
I am the author of fan favorite cliffhanger series, The Charlotte Grace Series and The Empathy Delacroix Series. I have also written a novel, The Underground.
I had this one on my to be read list for months and was thrilled when it was chosen as book of the month for an online book club I had been wanting to join. Getting involved with this amazing book club, and getting to read this intriguing book in a setting of a chapter a day with daily discussion were both amazing experiences for this lifelong voracious reader. Though I am quite sure this fantastical tale would have made an impact regardless, this experience really cemented that it will stay with me.
As a bit of a history buff, discovering the history of the real Underground tours convinced me it will be near the top of my list of things to check out if I make it to Seattle again. The fact that the original Seattle still exists under the current city does lead an imagination to go in many directions, but the one PM Briede chose to take in this book is a great combination just on the edges of dark possibility.
The heart of the story are the stories of Oz, a reporter who is haunted by a childhood trauma that has been mostly repressed, but has haunted his dreams since its occurrence when he was a young boy, and Izzy, who does not remember her life before she was a "grounding." Izzy has grown up believing monsters from books that have been edited to suit her leaders' needs to keep her and her "sisters" in fear of the surface. I know other reviewers have complained that the book moves slowly in the first half, but, and the book group probably helped my opinion, I did not see it as slow, but giving us a good view into the psyches of the major and minor characters of the story. The group setting of questioning and speculation made it all move at a nice pace to me. These factors definitely added to my enjoyment, especially when things we had pondered came to light. Other readers I know thought the ending came together too quickly and seemed out of the blue, but through the group we had dissected many scenarios that did play into the apocalyptic climax so it did flow logically to me in almost every area.
There are a few items here and there that I feel could be easily fixed by another round through an editor, but I did not feel they distracted enough from the story to take away any stars. Some locals I know found further distraction by some geographical and slang terminology errors, but having only visited Seattle briefly over 20 years ago did not effect me. There were a few areas I would have enjoyed more detail in Izzy's POV, and some would have been more comfortable with less, but overall I do not fault the author's portrayal.
For mature audiences for violence, abuse and sexual situations sometimes on the explicit side. I will note that none of the sexual situations seem gratuitous; they fit into the storyline. Highly recommended dark chiller, and I am thankful it has changed my views on book clubs. I look forward to delving deeper into PM Briede's catalog.
This is one of those books that has stayed with me. Set in Seattle's underground, this is paranormal with a bit of historical basis, edging along the line of 'might be possible'.
The story centers on Oz, a reporter, who is haunted by childhood trauma that he has largely repressed, and Izzy, who does not remember much of her life before her 'grounding'. Oz is haunted in his dreams. Izzy believes in monsters and the surface, living in fear of what lies above.
At the start, this book moves at a sedate pace and has a lot of character development. As events unfold, I believe it was necessary. It kept me turning pages to unravel the mystery, and the ending was spectacular.
There are some minor issues here and there. I would have liked more detail from Izzy's point of view. In other words, the book left me wanting more.
For mature audiences for violence, abuse and sexual situations sometimes on the explicit side. I will note that none of the sexual situations seem gratuitous; they fit into the storyline.
I was given this arc by the author for an honest review.
I know that when you read this book there are some points that is hard to read changing between seven's way of speaking and the normal one but trust me in this ITS AN AMAZING BOOK!!! I couldn't imagine what was coming and one suprise was following the other. The characters so complete and so fitting to one another spinning a story simply amazing. A brilliant story with so many twists and turns and suprises that will blow your mind!!!!!! This book is over the 5 star reviews for me!!!
Wow!! This was a FANTASTIC read! The Underground was not what I expected, it was so much more. From the first page I didn't want to put it down, I instantly wanted to know what would happen next. This story was so fascinating with many twists and turns. With each page I got the feeling there was more then meets the eye but I was not expecting what was really going on. I absolutely love these characters especially Oz and Izzy. The scenes with the two of them were so heart warming so when they were separated I ached for them to be together again. I highly recommend this book.
I'd NEVER heard about the Underground. I didn't know this was a real place?! Such a cool setting to be used in the book. That alone makes this an awesome read. It's so different from so many books out there.
This story also contains mystery, intriguing characters, twists, and action!! PM Briede is excellent with her details. She makes you feel like part of the scene. I read it with a book club and it was impossible for members to stick to a daily schedule. They never wanted to put it down. 5 STARS.
Couldn't put it down! What do you get when there is an abandoned Underground City. Legends and Myths. Oz, an intrepid reporter is going to find the truth. Izzie, ghost or a real woman? Do people really live in the Underground? Read this awesome book and find out!
what a Awesome book. I loved the twists and turns throughout the book. If I didn't read this book with a group of wonderful ladies only reading a chapter a day, I would of read this in one sitting. It is really good !!!!!!!!
Wonderfully written book! I was captivated by Izzy from the moment she was introduced and wanted to know "her story". Ozzy was an enduring character in his own right. Great read! Looking forward to more from PM Briede!
I snagged this book on Amazon back in December, when I got a request from the publisher to review it. I read the sample and was intrigued enough to go on and buy the book. It was added to the review pile, and I picked it back up last week to read on. I devoured the story of The Underground for a number of reasons. Let's get to why, shall we?
From a Reader's Perspective: This is the first cult book I've read. It was scary, intriguing, and nauseating at the same time. My toes curled at some of the descriptions about Izzy's life underground. I loved the characters. They weren't flat, and I certainly won't be forgetting them anytime soon. Pacing was slow at first, but when it kicked in and the action started, it didn't stop until the end. I'd say it was about halfway through when it really took off. One thing I love about books like this are the surprises you don't see coming. There are zero hints in the text at what happens until you get to the end and look back. That's when the ah-ha! hits you. Pieces of the puzzle so delightfully crafted click into place with a perfect interlock. Just when I thought I knew what was gonna happen, I was thrown for a loop. Loved it.
There are a few sexually explicit scenes in the novel, but they're not there just because. Those scenes are teaching you something about the characters and their growth as the story moves along. I'm not gonna lie; it was so hard to read the descriptions. I went green a time or two. But, the cold truth is often a bitter pill to swallow.
So much is going on in this book, and the author did such a great job of staying on track, working in the surprises, and showing an excellent visual of Seattle, I was drawn right in and held fast.
From an Editor's Perspective: Errors like this: "Izzy very rarely wore anything other than her anger opening." (not sure, but I think that's supposed to be "openly") and "...responsible for all the floaters, we're going to look like genius'!" (I believe that should be "geniuses"), along with dropped/misplaced commas, and other errant apostrophes leave me without the ability to give a star for editing.
Rating: 1 Star for world-building 1 Star for surprising me more than once 1 Star for not shying away in descriptions 1 Star for pacing and an amazing plot -1 Star for editing Overall: 4 out of 5 Stars. Highly recommended if you love an excellent story with great twists to keep you guessing.
Having no clue what this book was about I took a chance and am happy that I did. I'm still thinking about this book and it has been over a week now. If that's isn't a great sign of an excellent book than I don't know what is. What an interesting story filled with humor, suspense, curiosity, paranormal appearances, attraction, secrets, love and friendship. This book was so good and full of adventure and excitement that it seeped into my dreams on many nights leading to some extremely lucid fun dreams.
Oz, a reporter, is a nice man.He is trying to help find details about a murder and looks to his buddy Patrick, the crime scene tech and to the Underground for clues. He is a bit obsessed with The Underground myths about the groundlings and visits the tours often in hopes of seeing Delilah, the underground spirit. He actually does see her and is instantly obsessed with finding her all the time. When they communicate it is adorable. He truly cares about her and names her Izzy as she hates the name Delilah. This was just too cute. Izzy is very curious about him and why he is interested in her. The friendship and bond they form is unique, fun, and sweet. There are twists and turns in this book. There are a few wow moments as well near the end that'll keep you on your toes. This is a stand alone book. This book is NOT predictable at all and this is wonderful. I really appreciate an author that keep me guessing and second guessing myself until the end of a book.

The Underground was a very interesting and enjoyable story. It was filled with loveable characters who were a little cracked around the edges and most certainly hadn't had the easiest of lives. The leading male character, Oz, suffered quite a trauma as a child. Something he has carried into his adult life. Oz couldn't possibly know that reporting stories of a serial killer in Seattle will eventually throw him headlong into his painful past. Investigating the killer will lead him into the Underground and a chance meeting with one of the groundlings who resides there. Her name is Seven .... And she will change EVERYTHING in his life. It's a good thing that Oz has his sister, Colette and brother-in-law Patrick to help emotionally support him. Patrick also works for the police department and feeds Oz information about the serial killer.
I usually pride myself on being able to see inside an author's head, and I generally know where a story is going, long before we actually there..... Having that... I did see some of what would eventually come to pass, but honestly ..... There were a couple of curve balls in there that totally took me by surprise.
Overall this was a wonderfully engaging story and I hated to put it down at the end of my break each day :) If you like a little mystery and some romance, this is a terrific story. I hope you like it as much as I did :D
There are so many things about this book that I absolutely loved. It was a completely unique story that kept you hooked until the end. I had no idea that Seattle had underground tours or that there even was an underground. So, it was so cool how the author took that fact and built a story around it. Also, There are many twists and turns in the plot that I did not predict and I love a book that keeps you guessing.
There was only one minor thing about this book that just didn’t agree with me and that is why I gave it four stars instead of five. I don’t want to spoil anything yet for someone who wants to read this book… so, it was basically the plausibility of some of the situations involving the main character, Izzy. I question the believability of a few of her actions and reactions to some of the situations that she is put in. This was just a minor thing though, and I was still able to enjoy the book regardless.
All in all, this is a fantastic book. I do plan on reading more from this author and would recommend this to someone wanting to read something different with suspense and a really good plot.

The Underground by P.M. Briede held me spellbound from the beginning until the end. The book is the story of Oz Seidon, a reporter and Seven, a grounding. But, first a bit of background to the story.
The city of Seattle burned in 1889. The residents created a new city from what remained following the fire. Events in 1965 lead to belief in ghosts of The Underground. Lately, whispers and myths have merged into tales of people living in the garbage under the city. These people of the Underground are known as groundlings by the locals.
Today, the city of Seattle is plagued by a killer. Oz is curious about the part the old city may play in helping him find the murderer. A tour of TheUnderground leads Oz to the groundling, Seven, who he calls Izzy.
The interplay between Oz and Izzy is chemical. Their character development is spot on. In addition to that, the novel contains mystery and suspense which will hold you in it's grip until The End. Kudos to P.M. Briede on such a comprehensive first novel. The Underground is a #MustRead.
Finished this in one sitting. OK, granted I was on a flight for 14 hours, I still wasn't able to put it down even to take a nap. I was hooked! I have never gone to The Underground tour, but by reading the book, I kind of imagined what it would have been like. So while reading, my imagination was running with the story. Here was Oz, a journalist who was bent on uncovering the story about groundlings. They were these people who were rumored to be living deep in the tunnels. Lo and behold, one of them showed themselves to him. Seven, they called her seven. She had a number for a name, but he wanted to call him Izzy. Anyway, as I said, I couldn't stop reading. I had to know what was going to happen next! Ms. Briede has a way of pulling you into her story telling. It was like she was telling you something that really happened, and not figment of her imagination. Not to mention the twist near the end. I didn't see that coming. I might have thought of something fishy about that character, but nothing close to what she did!
A very intriguing story that pulls you in from the beginning. Oz works at a television station in Seattle. His best friend and brother-in-law, Patrick - a crime scene tech, feeds him information on crimes. Oz is plagued by an event that happens in his youth, one that he has no solid memories of. One day he decides to take a tour of the Underground - the city beneath the city. A ghost...or is she, is a popular topic among the tour guides and guests. When Oz catches a glimpse of the "ghost", he becomes obsessed. He takes the tour multiple times and finally has a chance to meet her.
The resulting story has many twists and turns, and some revelations at the very end are surprising!
Unlike the Charlotte Grace series, this book is a standalone. It is great and so different from anything that I have read! I highly recommend it.
What if the rumors of people living underground were true? What if it connects to a childhood tragedy? Oz works for the news and right now they're covering the serial killer but he's always been more interested in the truth behind the groundlings. When stories start of a woman being repeatly spotted Oz decides to start taking the underground tours. What he uncovers not only changes his life but the lives of many people.
I love the characters. Oz and Izzy are wonderful and realistic and even the side characters have great depth to them.
The Underground is definitely a unique story-line and will keep you guessing throughout. I appreciate the suspense factor and would not have guessed the outcome. There were some aspects of the book that I did not agree with and had difficulty reading, but thankfully it did not go into much more, and I was able to make it past them.

I fell in love with Briede's Charlotte Grace series...and never thought that another book could beat that, but it did!! P M Briede delivers a story that grips and pulls you in from the very first page!! It is full of intrigue, suspense and just the right amount of heat! This is a must read and I promise that it will leave you begging for her on her author page for MORE!!! She is a fabulous writer!!!
I completely enjoyed this story. I was nearly late for work, because I made the mistake of starting it this morning. I got so completely wrapped up in the story. While the premise of the story is unimaginably horrifying, the actual story was so seamless and well-written, that it wasn't terrifying, but thrilling! This is the first book I've read by this author, but I am definitely putting her on my "must-read" list!
This book blew my mind! I had no idea what to expect and I was very pleasantly surprised. The characters are fantastic and I completely fell in love with Oz and Izzy. Everything just came together brilliantly and the twists and turns left me floored! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good thrill. A fabulous read!
I really enjoyed this one... It brought a bit of freaky with adventure. I liked the characters and how it brought past and future together. It had tons of twists and turns and made me laugh. I really enjoyed this story and am so glad I got to review it and will be recommending it to my friends.
This was a very unique and interesting book. I have heard about the underground tunnels and P.M. Briede puts a great spin on them. I would recommend reading this book as it brings many difficult subjects to life.
First, I am sure I received this book when I entered a contest on Facebook.
To be brutally honest, I loved this book. It had all the ingredients needed for a chilling suspense. The background information this writer provided showed how much she cared about writing this book and the effort she put in to provide facts and fiction.
I could go on patting this author on the back but it is best if you read this book and discover her artistry yourself. Highly recommend!
