In the heart of Los Angeles, where beauty meets hustle, one girl is learning to lash… and learning to love.
Delaysia is a rising star in the beauty world—licensed, booked, and lowkey blowing up. But behind every perfect lash set and polished smile is a young woman hiding heartbreak. Abandoned by her mother and raised by a father she barely knew, Delaysia stopped believing in love a long time ago.
Now in her twenties, she’s still a virgin—and her loud-mouth, ride-or-die salon sisters are on a mission to "fix" that before she grows cobwebs. But what they don’t know is that Delaysia’s scars run deep, and she refuses to give her heart—or her body—to just anybody.
Caught between salon chaos, fake friendships, messy love triangles, and the trauma she thought she buried, Delaysia’s journey is raw, real, and relatable. Just when she swears real love don’t exist, someone unexpected shows up—and makes her believe again. But love isn’t easy, especially when your past keeps showing up uninvited.
Will her friendships survive? Will her past destroy her future? Or will she finally choose herself—and the love she’s always deserved?
If you're a fan of African American romance, coming-of-age stories, sisterhood, Black love, healing journeys, and urban fiction with heart, then The Girl That Do Lashes will pull you in from the first page.
Because sometimes, the baddest girls… are the ones still learning how to be loved.
Writing about CSA with parents essentially protecting the perps and never getting their 3 yr old help will never not give weird. Then to later on kick her out for being hyper sexual and inappropriate made zero sense and truly disgusted me. Didn’t care to see where this went at all. Additionally it wasn’t well written enough for me. The scenes were never vivid enough for you to feel like you were there with your characters. It gave watching a movie with no subtitles and the volume off. A lot of things happened in the beginning that just didn’t move me or make enough sense. Like you opening a story with a death and we the reader don’t know that man from a can of paint and the way they talked made it seem like they were all the same age meanwhile it’s a Father daughter like Huhh?? This one had me scratching my head
I think I may have just found a new fav author in you. Grace was a troubled young woman who after being exposed to something she had no business being exposed became hyper sexual and it caused alot of problems in her life especially when it came to her parents. Being put out and the streets becoming her home she did what she had to do to get by. After a night with 3 different men she gets pregnant but it could’ve been more than that who knows she gets pregnant with a beautiful baby girl named Delaysia. It’s either she just didn’t care to be a mother or she really didn’t give a damn but Delaysia is taken in by one of the three guys proven not to be the father and raised into a beautiful young woman. Bishop raises Delaysia and showers her with love affection and all the warmth in the world. Two weeks before she’s set to graduate from cosmetology school Bishop is taken away from her in a tragic accident and that’s where her real problems start. Her mother Grace who was always in and out of her life is back but for how long bc it’s never really long with Grace. Delaysia had always been an afterthought to her but she always had Bishop and Jalen who was more of a best friend and protector than anything. He was always there when she needed him. Wendy her good friend from school offers her a job and she takes a liking to Jalen but he ain’t into her. Looking for love Wendy,Delaysia and another co-worker named Tee-Tre get hooked up with dates and not everything is smooth sailing esp when secrets come out and confrontations are made causing some real bad backlash. For a moment Delaysia gives up on love after a really scary situation and I don’t blame her. Wendy and Tee-Tee find out some things that leave them looking at things sideways for a lil minute. There are more than a few secrets in the air that all of these characters are holding onto. Grace has a secret of her own that definitely comes back to bite her with awful consequences. Jalen let out something he’s been holding in for a minute and it’s a shock with some reverberating reactions for one person involved in particular. That cliffhanger was wild as hell. If y’all ain’t read anything by Sweet Pea start with this under Cole Hart you won’t be disappointed at all. Great job boo 5 ⭐️ read right here
When I tell you Delaysia had it bad, I mean it but she was definitely a true fighter. Stuck things out and tried her best at all times. Her mom had no class about herself like Sunday lol 😆 The way they carried on at Wendy's shop was a mess. Those customers were funny yet traumatizing. In the worse ways. Jalen was her ride or die,Kenley had mistaken him for Sekani sadly. They got into a horrible fight with knives and fist. Delaysia life was full of some roller coaster events some days were so high and others were horribly low. She doesn't know which way to turn. The big question at hand how will all this end. So many relationships are at stake.
Now this book had me rolling from the beginning to the end I couldn't stop reading it Haha delaysia moped the floor with that girl I was cracking up I could imagine being there with all them people throwing stuff at that girl now that was funny but she should've never did what she did but they shop is off the hook omg..finally delaysia and Jalen opened their eyes up and see they was suppose to be together..its sad what happened to grace she tried but it was a little too late I don't know why she didn't look around for the purse when she got lose maybe she could've gotten away idk..can't wait for the next one
Dnf at 5% I don't know why, but this was just making me anxious. I just couldn't push through to even get to the main point of the storyline. Also, the prologue turned me off really really badly.
Title: The Girl That Do Lashes: A Virgin BBW Romance Author: Sweet Pea Genre: Contemporary Romance, Urban Drama, BBW Romance, Virgin Trope Vibe: High-octane personal drama, self-discovery, and choosing that man—best paired with a fiery shot of courage.
Y'all, this book by Sweet Pea is a true ride-or-die story, and I am hooked on Delaysia's journey. This is a story that goes deep on the drama, but the emotional payoff is worth every ounce of tension. We follow Delaysia, a woman navigating a confusing, toxic world, who decides she is finally "choosing herself. Choosing Jalen. And Choosing love." It's about breaking free from the past and finding the man—Jalen—who sees, loves, and is waiting for her.
What I Sipped & Savor
🥃 The Heroine's Evolution: Delaysia is the star of the show. I loved watching her realize she was done begging for approval and making decisions for herself. That moment where she peeled out of the lot, leaving the pain behind, was absolutely fantastic. Her growth from a woman who expects heartbreak ("It never did.") to a woman claiming her own happiness is powerful. 🥃 Jalen, The Anchor: The dynamic with her husband, Jalen, is exactly what I crave in a redemption story. He's the man who "saw her. Loved her. And was dying to spend the rest of his life with her." That level of devotion against a backdrop of deep insecurity and past trauma is incredibly satisfying. 🥃 Unapologetic Drama: This book does not shy away from high-stakes urban drama. From stolen trucks and secrets to best-friend betrayals and a $3 million prize on the line, the author kept the plot moving so fast I couldn't set the glass down. It’s messy, raw, and totally engaging.
What Made Me Side-Eye My Glass
🥃 The Velocity of the Ending: I have to admit, the final chapters are a sprint. The resolution of Delaysia's self-empowerment happens quickly, rushing her into the arms of Jalen, and I wanted a bit more time to settle into their new reality before the inevitable next-book drama kicks off. 🥃 The Cliffhanger is a Battering Ram: Y'all, this is a major series warning! The book ends with a classic, bold "TO BE CONTINUED…" followed by a massive list of teasers for Book 2—who gets the $3 million? Will Delaysia lose her virginity? Is Jalen hiding secrets? If you need closure, this ending will leave you yelling at your Kindle.
Final Pour
The Girl That Do Lashes is a fiercely written book about a woman taking control of her life and her heart. It’s got depth, it’s got fire, and it sets up a truly compelling drama for the rest of the series. If you love a heroine who finally chooses herself and you can handle a killer cliffhanger, dive in!
I’m giving this novel a strong 3.75 out of 5 stars. It’s a compelling, heart-on-its-sleeve read.
Pairs well with: A Cherry Bomb Old Fashioned. Something strong enough to handle the drama, with a sharp, sweet kick to match Delaysia's fiery resolve.
