The first third was really good. It gave world building snd more character to Will and Jett. Even Flo had extra characterization.

But then we reach the part when we meet the team. I don’t know if the author was rushed, but it really seems like it when the introduction of the movie is a third of the book.

If you’re a Modo fan, I’d skip this. They did our boy so wrong. Changed his scenes and made him more like the runt of the team.

There scene where Jett is boasting about her team to Mane Attraction? She forgets Modo. The scene where Dennis snaps and gives constructive criticism? He just destroys everyone’s ego (which is against what the film was rven about) and forgets Modo. It isn’t until later that Dennis finally compliments them and simply tells Modo ‘you be you because it scares the other players’.

And the final scene? He isn’t even mentioned. Jett just says that the team is bought back.

He also has chameleon powers. It was only two lines with it.

The thing is, the author was great with the other characters. Archie and Olivia got dialogue and backstories that add to their lore. Lenny used his rap to insult in the court, which is odd but it was cute.

Overall, I’d give it five for the first third. Then three for the rest. I don’t know if the author had a tight deadline or what am I supposed to expect from a children’s movie novelization? I’ve read novelizations for films, but those usually added more depth and the scene changes usually aren’t that extreme. But those were for an older audience.

If you’re gonna give it to your kid, I’d have them read the book then watch the movie, rather than the other way around. But up to you.

This one took so long to get through because it was exactly like the movie. I wish it had more to it. I love a good movie adaptation but I am always expecting more from a book. This one was just a little underwhelming. If I had to rate it based on how close the movie was to it, then it would get a 5/5. But based on how much I enjoyed it, it gets a 3/5.

My son would give it 5 stars (but I haven’t seen him give less than 5, so take that as you will lol)
