Nobelle’s life has been anything but pretty, but that doesn’t mean that she is ready for it to end any time soon. So when she hears that the prize for rescuing Princess Danna out of her tower prison is marriage into the royal family, Nobelle thinks she has found a way out of her dilemma. They wouldn’t condemn the princess’s wife, surely? Unfortunately the poisonous briar, deadly harpies, and magic fire are not Nobelle’s real problem. No, her problems all come down to Danna and her unflinching belief that true love will save her from her curse. Which, in Nobelle’s opinion, is just plain daft.

This story started off really well. I loved the interaction between the two characters, and the fact that Nobelle was not automatically struck with ‘true love’ the moment she saw Danna was very nice. It made for a nice twist on this fairytale story.

And if there had been a bit more of the story I think I would have ended up loving it. The basics were all there, and I certainly enjoyed the characters, but things felt incredibly rushed. I love that the love was not at first sight, but had a hard time believing it came at 15th, either. Mostly because the story was so rushed that we never got to see much of the journey from 1st to 15th.

Which also probably was my problem with the the problem in this story. Nobelle tells Danna that she is no knight within seconds of meeting her, and yet Danna acts flabbergasted when Nobelle tells her secret. Because we never really get to see the relationship build up, it just seemed over the top. Maybe the issue there though was just that the story pov was skewed more towards Nobelle so we don’t really understand Danna and her personality at all.

If the last half of the story had stayed as fun as the first half, I think I could have ended up really loving this book. As it was, it was nice. Nobelle and Danna were interesting characters, and I really enjoyed seeing them interact, so it wasn’t a hardship to read this. Just a bit rushed at times.

Princess Danna has dreamt of a true love marriage since she was twelve. She’s over twenty now and it still hasn’t happened, so her parents arrange a marriage for her with a neighbouring king. But Danna wants her true love match, and what could guarantee true love more than a curse and being locked in a tower? Unfortunately, her rescuer is in no way a noble knight, and the fact the curse isn’t broken means the woman isn’t her true love, either.

I found Danna to be a bit vapid at first, especially compared to Nobelle, which I am sure is the impression you are supposed to get. I sympathised with Nobelle right from the start, even before the two met. “Nobility” is worth sticking with, however, as you learn about Danna with Nobelle. And I really like the way Ms Bain-Vrba changed the True Love storyline but still kept the heart of it.

I have read some of Ms Bain-Vrba’s other works and find that they tend to have more of a dark overshadowing than many other fantasy stories and I do need to be in the mood for them. Of those stories I have read by Ms Bain-Vrba, although I liked “Words of Divinity” more, “Nobility” is definitely not the one I liked least.

However, “Nobility” does end on a Happily-For-Now note (sliding into a HEA) as they do work out things between them but there is an overshadowing of certain problems to come. I’m not sure if this is because Ms Bain-Vrba intends a sequel or whether this is just a reflection of the real world where a relationship is always in flux, but it’s more like a meet-cute than the whole story. Either way, this was a lovely way to take a short break.

3.5 stars. This is a cute, quick fairytale read that takes an affection pop at more traditional and Disney tales. Nobelle is a far from perfect heroine but she’s clever and determined to survive. I liked her. Danna is a bit more expected – pretty princess who is tired of having everything, didn’t want to marry the nasty prince. I loved the descriptions of her life in the tower and the cute swipes at Tangled (the painting as seen through Nobelle’s eyes made me laugh), and especially loved how Nobelle gets into the tower.

True, it’s kind of silly in places and Danna’s hissy-fit about people always wanting things from her (why else would anyone be rescuing her? How can they fall in love with her for herself when they’ve never met her?) is annoyingly naive, and perhaps the villain was a bit too cliché for me, but overall it’s sweet and has a lovely message about how true love really happens.

A lovely addition to the Damsels in Distress collection, especially if you don’t mind tweaking the whiskers of all those fairytale clichés.

I so wanted to love this, but it all moved way too fast and I didn’t get a chance.

The story is a cute, quick, insta love story. Nobelle is the arse kicking outlaw and Danna is the pretty princess with more to her than meets the eye. There are little snippets of humor the whole way though keeping the story light, fresh and entertaining. There was definitely a really strong background for what could have been spun into a longer and more thrilling tale.

I really loved the sound of this story, its synopsis and the cover. I think if the author had had the extra pages to build the characters and the world more, I would have loved it. I wish it had been a longer story so that we could have watched the Women fall in love – I know it’s only a short story but it just felt too rushed for my taste.

If we were allowed to give half stars, this would be a 3.5. It was a good story, but it wasn't great. I love a fairy tale. A princess looking for her true... protected by flesh eating harpies.... This is the stuff dreams are made of! However, after a while... the story starts to follow all the other fairy tales. There's some sort of misunderstanding. The princess gets captured... must defeat the bad guy. While the story was entertaining... It fell a bit short.
