101 Super Fun Facts And Amazing Pictures (Featuring The World's Top 10 Sharks) This book depicts the wonder of the world of Sharks in all its glory. Children are given a well-rounded understanding of this beautiful its anatomy, feeding habits and behavior. The following Sharks are Black Tip Reef Shark Bull Shark Great White Shark Hammerhead Shark Lemon Shark Leopard shark Nurse Shark Tiger Shark Whale Shark Wobbegong The description is simple enough for early readers or for a parent to guide a child through. There are lots of information and pictures to talk about with your child. Alternatively, a child of any age (even the child in you) can enjoy the coloring pages of these sharks. Do enjoy!
There are 2 verisons of this book, one with coloring pages and one without. This is a great book for elementary school children. It is divided up into chapters by the type of shark. The facts are easy to understand. The photo of each shark is impressive. For future edits I would like to see a scale of a human and each shark so that children can grasp the different lengths of the various sharks.
Okay so, I know this book is for kids. It was £0.49 on the Kindle Store and I love sharks; often, I find some smaller facts that are in books for children I don't actually know, because I focus on the more "grown up" facts, or rather, the more scientific facts. Either way, it's a book about sharks and being an avid shark lover since I was four, I'm going to buy a cheap book about them.
I was actually really disappointed in this book.
This book is an educational resource for children, obviously, about sharks. So why does the author say and, I quote:
These divers had to be very careful not to piss the shark off.
Not to pick at tiny little things, but this is for children. If I gave this to a four year old, the age I was when I fell in love with sharks, I would be completely horrified to find language like this used within the pages.
Not only this but, as a studying marine biologist, who hopes to excel in shark research, a lot of these facts are wrong, and repeated throughout the book. Some of the incorrect facts were so wrong, and I actually choked laughing on my coffee. It's ridiculous. If you're trying to get children into sharks, at least use the correct facts. This was only published in 2014. The facts that are incorrect (and there are too many to list), were all published with the correct information between 2009 and 2012. There isn't any excuse for Evans to have this information wrong.
And the final problem I had with this book? Janet Evans, please explain to me how you expect young children to know about the number of fish you also named alongside the sharks, when I have only ever heard of them, due to studying marine biology? I showed my 49 year old mother sections from this, and even she had never heard of some of the fish.
The only decent thing about this book was the photos, in all honesty. I cannot express enough how disappointed I am in this book. This was a waste of 49 pence.
