After waking up from a blackout at a party and realising what had happened to her, all Betty wanted was understanding and compassion. But when not even her closest friends can give her that, she decides, together with her parents, the only ones who believe her, to go to court. The legal system fails her, the rich buying their son his future, while hers is ruined. A wound so deep, a trauma she’ll carry for the rest of her life, a constant reminder she’ll never get rid of.
Her perpetrator cannot let slide the fact that she tried to ruin his reputation, instead of being grateful that he even laid eyes on her. He launches an unrelenting attack on her through social media, text messages, and video leaks, and even her best friend joins in.
Driven into a corner, with no one believing her, Betty is forced to seek her own justice, to restore the balance that got disrupted that night…
After loving Roll for Initiative by Camphouse, I was really excited to receive an eARC of Restoring the Balance. This one takes a much darker turn, diving headfirst into extreme horror, trauma, and revenge.
The story follows Betty, who’s drugged and r*ped at a party, only to be failed by everyone around her: the legal system, her friends, society at large. When justice isn’t served, she takes matters into her own hands. It’s a painfully realistic scenario, but this book takes it further, channeling righteous feminine rage into a cathartic horror fantasy. That concept alone is incredibly powerful.
We get dual POVs from both Betty and her abuser, Jason and wow, Jason is a POS. While I liked the idea of exploring both perspectives, I found myself wanting a little more character depth on both sides. With a story this short (around 70 pages), there’s limited room to fully flesh them out, but I think that extra nuance would’ve made the emotional beats hit even harder.
That said, the horror elements really stood out. The body horror scenes were intense, chilling, and expertly done. They absolutely had me glued to the page. This book also doesn’t shy away from graphic content, including assault, and it starts on page one, so definitely check trigger warnings before diving in.
This is a bold and brutal read that takes risks, and I admire that. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from both Camphouse and Von Goth.
Thank you to Lesley A. Camphouse for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
I finished reading "Restoring the Balance" by Lesley A. Camphouse and I really enjoyed it. Readability was outstanding, it was short but wickedly propulsive. The perfect ending was upon me like a tidal wave before I realized it. I really liked the writer's technique of alternating the viewpoint of the innocent victim of a vicious rape and the first person POV of the narcissistic rich boy who can process only his own wants and needs. The extreme horror is well written and effective. The Splatterpunk is a fine example of a message sent wth prejudice. Loved this short work. If I had one recommendation (or two) it would be making the book longer. Yes it was compact and punch my lights out effective, but I would have enjoyed more on the evolution of Betty's psychosis leading to multiple gruesome murders. Secondly, a sequel which begins with the last chapter and then chronicles the fruition of Betty's second chapter of other wordly retribution for the boy-man who ruined her body and soul in her first life to terrify and horrify his existence from the after life.
CHILLING SPLATTERPUNK EXTREME HORROR TALE ABOUT A GIRL'S RETRIBUTION WHICH INCLUDES NO PLANS TO STOP
Yesterday I was hanging out on Discord, and a friend went on a slight drunken rant about how horror is only defined by jump scares and how it should only be left on the screen.
This book is a perfect example of how horror doesn’t have to be the typical scary monster or a cheap scare only in movies; it can be the very real, very human kind of horror that so many live through.
Restoring the Balance tackles rape, the aftermath, the judicial system, the emotional toll, and how often survivors are left to pick up the pieces while the perpetrators walk away untouched.
Remember Brock Turner? Caught red-handed and served a pathetic sentence just because his future was “too bright to ruin”? That’s what this book dives into.
The book made me furious. And the worst part? So many people—men and women—still think like this. Victims are silenced out of fear, shame, or social pressure. And yes, this happens to male victims too. It’s a whole system of denial and erasure.
The story doesn’t flinch. We get both the victim’s and the rapist’s perspectives, something I never expected to work, but it does. Horrifyingly well. Watching the spiral from both sides was one of the most effective narrative choices I’ve read in a long time.
And at the center of all the chaos is one small glimmer of hope: someone who believes her, who supports her, and helps her reclaim her power by taking revenge on everyone who failed her.
It’s one of my favorite “good for her” stories, and I can’t wait for the sequel.
Betty is vengeance. Betty is fury. Betty is every woman who’s ever been told to stay quiet, and I’ll be thinking about her for a long, long time.
Lula & Lesley have done it again with this latest extreme horror/feminine rage novella, which affected me in the best way.
Bettys story was told in a sharp, fearless tone as only these two amazing ladies Lula and Lesley can deliver, and this collaboration, together was absolutely explosive.
What hit the hardest for me was how real this all felt. It begs to ask the question, How is it OK to overstep a woman's boundary, and how is it OK to be rewarded by inappropriate behaviour?
There was the gaslighting, followed by the trauma. Social Ioslation, and then BAM, the RAGE...oh, how fkn glorious it felt, how feral, and i lapped it all up.
This was not an easy read, and I'll say this because it was BRUTAL, GRAPHIC, and yet EMOTIONALLY RAW, but it’s clearly also one of the most NECESSARY horror books I’ve read and needed to read in a while.
Both Lula and Lesley don't hold back. If you’ve read Ingest Me or Scarred, you know these authors don’t do “safe.” With this collaboration, it's them both at their most unapologetic, most unhinged, and most powerful.
If you're someone who gets offended, easily make sure to check your trigger warnings ⚠️
This book is a true definition of “boys will be boys” of course they will be. Especially when you have rich parents that tend to look the other way. This book is about a woman rage and it truly displays that not all horror is graphic and gory. There is also the psychological horror that is hard to escape.
This book is about a woman named Betty by all standards your typical college student until she crosses path with Jason. One night at a college part he does the unthinkable and from there begins that chain of horrible events.
What happens when the system fails !? There are no consequences for the wrong doing of others? No one believes you? Even your best friend side eyes you saying “what did you expect”?. Just horrible so sometimes you have to be your own hero. No one is coming to save you but you. That’s exactly what Betty does. She has a list of people that have wronged her. The action is non stop and very horrific. I definitely love this book Lesley and Lula definitely did a great job with this book. I love the POV between Betty and Jason! It’s good to read how their minds works.
Let’s Be clear Jason was playing Checkers and Betty was playing Chess. This book is great reminder of be very careful who you do wrong, it’ll always come back to you. Definitely a great read and will highly recommend. Please make sure to check your triggers. Horror has a new team that’s for sure.
Thank you Lesley and Lula for this ARC! It’s absolutely amazing. All opinions expressed are my own
The start of this book reels you in instantly. Betty is r*ped and the perpetrator walks free. Her upset and disappointment changes to anger.
Jason is a vile human who sees nothing wrong in his actions.
Betty seeks to exact her revenge. This story flows with delicious body horror. I especially loved how Jason’s character began to change through the story.
But who will win this tussle? Betty or Jason?
This is a fast paced, incredibly well written story! I devoured this one!
I had been looking forward to this team-up ever since these girls announced it, and this book was glorious as I imagined it would be!
Betty, our main character, woke up to a scenario that nobody wants to be in. Everyone, with the exception of very few people, either blamed her or wanted her to accept what happened (surprise, surprise!), because sadly it's not about who is telling the truth, it's about who has the power and the money to bribe people into accepting their version of the events instead. Who is more believable, the drunk girl at the party who looked like she was asking for it, or the clean-cut guy who "harmlessly indulged" in a bit of fun? Not only did our FMC suffered through that whole traumatic event, no one would let her forget it. And so she did the only thing she could.
She sought to restore the balance.
Carefully? Not enough. Sloppily? YES. That's the beauty of Betty's revenge. She was winging it. She was fueled by rage, controlled by her emotions, powered by her need to get even. That doesn't make her good at executing her plans. From my perspective, the more people she took down, the more her sanity erodes. The closer she got to her main target, the sloppier she got with her own safety.. and it cost her greatly. The end.. not.
It seems like L & L is not done tipping the scales just yet. Restoring the balance is never simple and easy, and I thank these two lovely ladies for all of their hard work to bring us this story!
This book will be out on August 15th.

Now as you all know ill read anything that Lesley touches and this is my first foray into a Lula Von goth novel and what they have created is a fantastic splatterpunk collab
We are introduced to Betty who after being a victim of SA seeks her own vengeance in the most descriptive and wonderfully imaginative ways I really enjoyed this book the characters were equally likeable and hated and it feels like the miscarriage of justice was well and truly corrected but that ending had me craving more!
Omg I ate this up. I’ve never read anything before where the r*pist and the victim both have a POV. It was defo interesting to see how it would work, and it really did.
The horror literally starts from the very first page. Betty waked up to find out she has been sexually assaulted. She files a report with the police to bring justice to her attacker, but the complete opposite happened and he walks away without even getting a slap on the wrist. Betty decides she needs to take things into her own hands.
I LOVE revenge horror and this was brilliant. The way Betty delivered the most brutal revenge to those who wronged her. I was cheering for her. The way we got to see how the attacker was coping through his POV and the fear he actually started to feel.
I love revenge stories. They are one of my all-time favorite subgenres of horror. That being said, I absolutely loved this story! I particularly enjoyed the fact that it highlighted how crooked the legal system can be when it comes to these kinds of cases. The male antagonist was such a narcissistic little punk! If the goal was to make you hate his guts, they did a great job. There are parts in the story where you are given the opportunity to maybe feel a bit bad for him, but, just as soon as that happens, it's gone, again. Her best friend made me so mad, too. Betty sure did get some bloody revenge, in very gory, and, graphic fashion, though, and I was here for it! I loved the fact that she had the people to support her that she did, but, you can tell she had snapped. This story was so, so good! I highly recommend this to everyone who loves an amazing story of loss, pain, rage, and, revenge. 5 stars!
Betty is truly the version of what many women fantasize about being after going through that.
This is not just another revenge fantasy dressed in gore. It’s a gory scream to a world that often turns its back on victims, and I felt every ounce of it in my bones. The story follows Betty, a girl who, after being drugged and raped in a party and watching the justice system and even people "close" to her protect her attacker, takes revenge into her own hands. What comes next is brutal, grotesque, and deeply cathartic—at least, in a way only extreme horror can be. Her revenge isn’t subtle nor pretty, it’s savage, messy, and unapologetic.
This book is not for everyone. The violence is extreme and gruesome. It feels like watching a slasher film and i truly appreciate that.
This is my third book by Lesley Camphouse, and my first from Lula Von Goth. An unrelenting tale of poor Betty who is drugged and raped at a party, only to have her claims ignored by most. she decides to take the pig of a man to court, but coming from wealth, the family easily get their "not guilty" verdict. Thus begins Betty's tale of bloody revenge for those who turned their backs, spread the rape media, and the judicial system that failed her. I smashed this out in one sitting; it's super fast-paced (almost too fast in parts) with a few character twists and turns along the way. So if you like your revenge tales fast and ferocious, this one's for you. 4/5
Holy wow . Seriously if you’re looking for I spit on your grave vibes , or female rage you’ve found it . This is another must read for extreme horror ! And I’m here for it !!!
this revenge story is absolutely wild! after a night of being r@ped, everyone including her best friend did not believe her. she ends up doing her own justice to the people related to this creep. it was brutal, disgusting and again I am all for it. they deserved everything they got! ps: I love that old man that helped her and helped her go through with it
All right, I've gotta be honest. I was expecting a finality to this, only to be left with proverbial blue balls. The cliff-hanger ending without even a soft caress of the antagonist in a similar situation? I hate it.
As far as the story itself, it felt a touch drawn out. I think Ive become accustomed to the rapid-fire brutality, whereas this one took some planning and was somewhat more realistic.
I can see the intention of the book, especially with the title of the book, but that doesnt mean I like it.
A well laid out revenge story that not only delivers on the satisfaction scale, but it highlights all the hurdles victims have to go through even after being abused. As that is not enough in itself!! But I have to say from personal experience that it is often true and these things get downplayed a lot by society, friends and family alike. Not only that, but as redundant as it seems, money speaks louder than anything else, and although this is a fictional tale, this still rings too true!
This is the story of Betty and her refusal to get victimised over and over, and how her injustice sent her spiraling into a blood soaked plan to make sure the balance is restored for all the times that it was shifted at the hands of lower humans. The plot is compelling, the imagery is expressive (I could hear every slash and crunch) and the writing flows easily. This is a window into the blind rage victims of injustice are thrown into and the direction it could take if not resolved. I need more of this story as the authors left us with a truly breathtaking cliffhanger!
Thanks to the authors for a copy and this is my honest opinion.
Restoring the Balance is a duel POV story of Betty the unfortunate victim of a rape and Jason the perpetrator.
This was an amazing novella which kept me hooked from start to finish! A story of female rage and revenge at it’s finest, while also seeing the story through the perpetrator’s eyes!
I was kindly gifted an ARC for this and I cannot wait to see what’s next!!
The portrayal of sexual violence in media has always been fraught, especially within the revenge narrative. These stories often follow a familiar arc: a woman is assaulted, she survives, she exacts violent revenge. In exploitation films like Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave, however, the assault is voyeuristic, making the “empowerment” feel hollow. More recent films, like the exceptional Revenge instead align us with the protagonist—emphasizing her pain and resilience rather than eroticizing her trauma. This evolution reflects the rise of women-authored stories, shifting the focus to the woman herself as avenger and narrator of her own story.
Restoring the Balance represents the next step of this evolution. After being assaulted at a party, Betty seeks compassion but finds only betrayal—even from her closest friends. The courts fail her, her attacker (Jason) smears her, and her world collapses under the weight of cruelty and lies. With nothing left, Betty takes justice into her own hands.
From the psychological torment to the graphic body horror, this book is brutal and unflinching. Some chapters are told from Jason’s perspective, and I loathed them because they’re so effective they make your blood boil. Jason is reprehensible, and what makes him even more chilling is how easily he thrives in a world that enables him. It’s entitlement. It’s willful ignorance. It’s a total disregard for another person’s autonomy and worth. It’s infuriating—and that’s the point.
Needless to say, Betty’s rage is justified. And, given historical context, it feels like the book is helping reclaim the revenge narrative with urgency. What makes this book stand out is how it threads brutality with meaning. The violence is not spectacle, but a mirror to what Betty has endured and what so many survivors face in real life. By placing her vengeance in this context, the story transforms into a radical statement of survival and agency. It’s not comfortable reading, but it’s necessary.
“I’m coming for you, Jason. I don’t care how many guys you throw at me to kill. I will have your blood on my hands,” I whisper, as I cautiously approach the house.
Attending a party for a chance to have fun and let loose, Betty never realized taking that drink from Jason would set in motion the end of her life. Slipping something into her drink, it isn’t long before she’s under his control as he rapes her and steals her virginity. Waking up in pain and confused, she recognizes she was raped but even her best friend Simone refused to believe her. Laughing it off and blaming the alcohol, she feels hatred for Simone. This would only come to deepen as Simone and Jason appear to have formed a relationship amongst her misery and hatred. As she pushes the rape into a courtroom, his parents wealthy status leaves the judge ruling in Jason’s favor and leaves her with no justice to all the pain and humiliation she’s endured. Uploading photos and the videos of the rape, it isn’t long before the entire town is turning judgmental looks her way and leaving her a bullied outcast. Swearing for her own vengeance, she dons a costume and a mask and begins the torturous slaughter. Beginning with the judge, he’s mutilated and killed before she turns to Simone. Suffocated and brutally raped, she leaves her to finish dying while she makes her escape. Murdering his mother then his father, the final showdown is fast approaching. Trying to lure her out of the shadows, Jason watches her kill several of his friends before they would get the upper hand. Beating and stomping her, so many bones were shattered and broken before they lifted her into the hole and began burying her alive. Once again underestimating her, she begins crawling her way from the grave with only his death still left on her lips.
Whatever happened, I knew tonight would be the end for one of us.
Another day…another epic Camphouse novella and this time to add to the spice Lesley has joined forces with Lula Von Goth.
I’ve yet to read anything by Lula but Scarred has now gone to #1 on my TBR.
Anyway I digress
Those of you that follow me know that I’m a huge Camphouse fan and love it when I am sent an ARC to read (my next is just about to start).
I was really looking forward to this one and once again it’s another 5⭐️ masterpiece.
Before we get into the review I just want to warn you that this book has triggers galore.
The opening 2 chapters really set the scene as we meet Jason & Betty. We find out the Betty is raped by Jason and the description is horrific.
Betty tries to tell her best mate what’s happened but she isn’t believed.
When Jason is found not guilty Betty’s life is destroyed, there’s only one thing left to do….destroy Jason’s life completely.
Betty sets off on a journey of vengeance and her feminine rage is unstoppable.
When she finally catches up with Jason who will be the victor….
As always the kills are described to perfection, you can really feel Betty’s anger, every bit of hatred is felt with every word written.
This book really hits hard as the concept is so true to life….Rich kid gets away with a heinous crime, the victim is left with their life ruined whilst the rich kid feels indestructible so they feel there is no option but to take matters into their own hands.

Restoring the Balance is not just a novel—it’s a war cry. Written by two masters of female rage and revenge, Lesley Camphouse and Lula Von Goth, this book rips through silence with the fury of a woman who’s had enough.
At its core is Betty, a character who embodies every woman who's ever been told to shut up, sit down, or “just move on.” But Betty doesn't move on. She fights back. And what follows is a brutal, grotesque, and cathartic journey of revenge. Betty is not a symbol of healing—she’s a manifestation of fury, vengeance, and raw, unfiltered pain.
This story doesn't flinch. It doesn’t sugarcoat. It doesn’t try to make the reader comfortable. Instead, it screams—for all the women who've been silenced, dismissed, or disbelieved. The violence is savage. The justice is poetic. And the message is clear: this world doesn’t always protect victims, so sometimes, the victim has to become the weapon.
Lula Von Goth and Lesley Camphouse are at their most unapologetic here—feral, fearless, and brilliantly unhinged. Their collaboration births a story that’s as emotionally raw as it is viscerally satisfying. Restoring the Balance is not for the faint of heart—but it’s essential for those who understand the power of rage when justice fails.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Gripping Tale of Vengeance and Redemption
Thank you for allowing me to read this masterpiece as an ARC. Restoring the Balance by Les Ley and Lula Von Goth had my heart pounding from start to finish. The tension, twists, and raw emotion packed into each chapter made it nearly impossible to put down. This short story delivers a darkly satisfying and beautifully crafted tale in which revenge has never been sweeter.
The characters come to life, each one feels real, with their own struggles and fierce determination. Ley and Von Goth skillfully blur the line between justice and revenge, making you rethink who to root for as the story unfolds. Their vivid, atmospheric writing pulls you into every tense moment, leaving a lasting impression long after you finish the last page.
Overall, this is a powerful and unforgettable read. It is highly recommended for fans of emotionally charged revenge tales with a sharp edge. 👏
This Book was packed with all the feels! I felt so much empathy, sympathy, sadness, helplessness, anger, rage, fear, guilt, discomfort, the list goes on…
The story begins with Jason taking FULL advantage of Betty being drunk… but Betty refuses to accept what he did to her. Problem is, nobody believes her—they only see two teens having “fun”, turning a blind eye when they can look the other way seeing dollar signs 🤑
Betty got ridiculed, laughed at, made fun of & all bc Jason comes from wealth; the family able to buy themselves out of any mess. Sad truth is situations like this happen more often than we can imagine.
Betty starts to get her revenge, one person at a time leading up to her final victim, Jason. Problem is, Jason will not go down without a fight cuz let me tell you, he absolutely fights back!!!
And since they both feel as though they each deserve justice—who will win?
I absolutely love that these two amazing authors came together to create this little masterpiece!
Thank you to Lesley & Lula for the ARC! I leave this review voluntarily.
Restoring The Balance, Justice needs to be served, one way or another.
★★★★☆
When I saw Lesley A. Camphouse team up with Lula von Goth it was all I needed to hear to apply for the ARC.
I’ve recently become to appreciate the genre of splatterpunk and extreme horror and when written by these amazing women it’s both disturbing and a pleasure. (If I’m completely honest, Lesley’s novels have been the ones that transformed the way I look at these stories.)
This Novella is packed with some real horrors and ultimately revenge because justice isn’t being served as it should’ve been and Betty deserves justice, even if she has to take matters into her own hands. The dual POV gives you a great inside in both people’s minds and for me that only added fuel to the already raging fire within. I’m not done with this story, I need more.
When I saw Lesley & Lula had paired up, I knew this was going to be something incredible. I’m a massive fan of all Lesley’s creations so far & I’ve read a couple from Lula that had me open mouthed with anxiety & excitement, so I knew this was going to be nothing short of amazing 👏🏼
Betty wakes up with the pain & tell telling signs that she has been SA’d. Devastated that her virginity has been taken against her will, her bestfriend is telling her “it’s common to regret sleeping with someone at a party”. The boys are mocking her & no one seems to care, she is crushed.
She does the right thing & takes it to court, but Jason having money & status means she never stood a chance, he walks away smirking ready to party & carry on as the slimy pos he is.
It’s not as easy for Betty though, he took the one thing she had control over…there’s no justice in the system, so now it’s time for her to take matters into her own hands & get the justice she deserves, with all that failed her👌🏻
Wow the last few chapters of this was a cat and mouse game, but heightened to the max with anxiety of who’s going to come out alive. It had me in a chokehold…I was fully invested!
Brilliantly done, I felt anger at Jason & remorse for Betty. Unfortunately this is the kinda stuff that does happen but usually the wealthy get away with it completely, whilst the poor are left to pick up the pieces.
Another incredibly done story from Lesley & Lula 👌🏻 Out on 15th August so Makesure to get it on that TBR!!
Thank you to Lesley & Lula for the ARC! I leave this review voluntarily.

The idea of a dual POV story about a girl and her r*pist is a harrowing idea, and it works SO well.
Poor Betty is attacked at a party and she bravely speaks out to try to get him convicted. When his father leverages his status to get a not guilty conviction, she sets out to get her revenge.
This feels like such an important book to exist in the female revenge genre. Being able to follow both sides is painful and hard to read in some places, but it’s such an effective way of showing you the true feelings of both characters.
Lesley and Lula really know how to pull on your hate strings for the characters who have a target on their back given by the protagonist.
This read gives a glimpse of the real world by showing you how the justice system can be flawed and how money can play a part, as well as victims of sexual assault are affected.
There are people like this out in the world that absolutely grind my gears, and I know it is wrong to seek justice with violence but I cannot help but get psyched up and cheer on the main character as they get their revenge!
wow what a crazy ride this was. Jason rapes Betty at his party and then gets away with it. starts fucking her best friend. she brutally murders alot of people because they let him get away with her rape. Hopefully there will be a sequel because I need to know if he gets his.
