Ruth McIver is providing more depth to the dark tale of the Southport Chronicles that she began in “I Shot the Devil”. In “The Sound”, we join Erin Sloane after she has written a best-selling book of her findings in the previous novel. If you thought her life would be easier now that she found out what happened in the woods that Halloween night, you are wrong.
My advice, go check out “I Shot the Devil” before reading this book. I started reading this novel and wasn’t lost but realized there was so much going on that I didn’t feel like I could fully grasp what was going on without the previous novel. After reading that, come back and enjoy “The Sound”.
“The Sound” is not as convoluted as the previous novel, but it comes close. I had hoped that any future books would simplify the writing style. There are still so many characters to keep track of and several twists and turns with each one. Where the first book had you waiting to see what happened on the next page, this one just was there. It’s good. But not as good as “I Shot the Devil”.
Still, this is an “enjoyable” (if you can say that since it involves missing kids) read. Worth checking out. Just check out the first novel before you read this one.
