Scottish Single Dads #1

Captain of My Heart

Rate this book
Losing everything in New York? Rough.

Running off to a tiny town in the Scottish Highlands? Maybe a little dramatic.

Taking a nanny job for a hot but insufferably grumpy ferry captain? Clearly I wasn't thinking straight.

Yeah, Lachlan Munro's six-year-old son is utterly adorable. Even his golden retriever, who acts like he's on a sugar high 24/7, manages to win me over. But the man himself? Ugh!

Does he look ridiculously sexy in that uniform? Maybe. Okay, yes, but that's beside the point. His surly attitude and obsessive routines have even my sunshiny optimism fraying at the edges.

At least I'm not staying in his home. No, I'm tucked away in the guesthouse out back, with a gorgeous view of the sea.

But one night he's taking out the trash, I'm getting changed, and… I may have left a crack in the curtains.

Our eyes meet. He blinks. I shriek.

I swear I'm not a flasher. Just a victim of tragic timing--and my apparent inability to shut a curtain properly.

We both pretend it never happened. Except now I keep catching him staring at me. And occasionally I glimpse something softer behind that grumpy exterior.

Well, whatever. It doesn't matter. Because there's no way I'm getting involved with my emotionally unavailable boss.

I love this book! It pulled me out of my slump!
I spent the entirety of this book smiling, laughing, having it pull at my heart and, ermm, blushing. ☺️😜

Firstly, I love the writing. It flows with such ease that, before you know it, you’ve read several chapters. The imagery is luscious and picturesque. It made me want to be in Scotland so I could gaze upon the stunning scenery including a grumpy sailor in just his hat! lol

Of course we can’t forget the characters.
I absolutely adore Blair and Finn. They are funny, cute and so loveable but my heart goes to grumpy Lachlan. He has a hard exterior but it’s protecting a fragile heart. And I love his relationship with his son. It’s beautiful.

I completely fell in love with everyone but my favourite (other than the main characters) was Douglas. Totally adore him! Roll on Book 3 for his story.

Now, I have a love/hate relationship with romcom epilogues and so wasn’t going to read it but, loving the story the way I do, I had to find out. Thankfully it was the perfect ending.

Honestly, I could gush about this book forever but I don’t want to spoil it for you. Read it and thank me later! lol

You have a fan for life! ♥️

Ok, those are strong words considering this is the first book I’ve read by them but I just know I’m going to fall in love with the rest of The Scottish Single Dad series and The True Scotsman Series too! ♥️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thank you for the arc of this gorgeous book and introducing me to a new favourite trope, Single Dad.

Sorry for the delay in getting my full review out.

I’m so grateful to Amy and Gavin for an ARC copy of Captain of my Heart ❤️

The grumpy/sunshine was done perfectly, Lachlan’s gruff outer shell slowly being chipped away by Blair’s chirpiness and generally happy nature.

The exploration of grief was carefully and thoughtfully written, and I liked that it also explored grief in different generations and how it affects parents and children differently.

I do wish there had been a wee bit more to Blair staying, but it’s a small point of contention- and who doesn’t love a man making a public declaration of love?! Again, it’s just a small nitpick nothing major

Finn is my absolute favourite character, he is so mature and level headed for a six year old, while still personifying a human tornado as kids do.

I’m so excited for the next instalment in the series, and the one after that too.

Grab a comfy reading spot, and settle in. This is a very enjoyable read...if you like a grumpy Scot, a down-on-her-luck heroine, and a great cast of supporting characters in an idyllic Scottish coastal town, this is the book for you. The writing is quite good, the story flows along seamlessly, and it's a little bit spicy. Overall, a really well-balanced story, and I can't wait for the rest of the series to come out!

This is, without a doubt, my favorite book so far by Amy McGavin (talented wife-and-husband writing duo). From beginning to end, it enjoyed it so much that I devoured it in a single sitting.

Every time I pick up one of their books, I’m left with an overwhelming desire to book a flight to Scotland—not just to see the breathtaking landscapes they describe, but also to taste every delicious food and snack mentioned along the way. This particular story is part of The Scottish Single Dads series, which promises to lift your spirits and leave you with a warm feeling.

It follows a young woman fleeing a career-ending incident in which she was unfairly blamed for her boss’s mistake. Seeking refuge, she travels to Scotland to reconnect with her late grandmother’s past. There, she meets a grieving single dad raising his sweet little boy and their charming dog. The story gently unfolds into a tale of healing, hope, and new beginnings. The characters are beautifully written, full of heart, and grounded in a deep appreciation for family and friendship.

This is a cozy, feel-good read that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. Highly recommended for anyone who loves stories of emotional redemption, small-town charm, and slow-burn romance set against the magic of the Scottish Highlands. I highly recommend it!

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via BookSirens. This in no way impacted on my view.

When her firm turns her into the scapegoat for a failed AI app, Blair needs to escape New York, and where better than Ardmara. After all, the small Scottish village is where her grandmother grew up and surely no one had heard of her failure there. Blair immediately falls in love with the village, and the people there are so friendly. She needs something to occupy her, and though she's never been a nanny before, how hard can it be to look after a sweet 6 year old for the summer? The only real issue is Finn's handsome dad, Lachlan, who is grumpy personified, and who she can't stop thinking about.

This book was just what I needed. Blair and Lachlan had such a great grumpy/sunshine dynamic, and I'm a sucker for the single dad trope. There's a real found family element to this book. Finn is a bubbly little 6 year old, who's mam passed when he was young, and he takes to Blair immediately. She's not used to children, but she and Finn hit it off, and though she might not follow Lachlan's itinerary exactly, she is just what Finn needs. And for that matter, she's what Lachlan needs. She helps him to come out of his shell, to actually grieve for his late wife, and allow himself the chance of loving and being loved again. There's joy and laughter, but also a bit of angst and such raw emotion and love. A wonderful start to a series I can't wait to continue.

Captain of My Heart (Scottish Single Dads Book 1)
by Amy McGavin

This book was simply amazing! I love how the author skillfully builds the characters, giving us insightful glimpses into the lives of the next two couples, which leaves me eagerly anticipating their stories. This husband and wife duo are quickly becoming a favortie of mine.

The story beautifully captures the grumpy/sunshine dynamic, as Lachlan’s tough exterior is gradually softened by Blair’s cheerful and vibrant personality. Lachlan, a rugged and moody Scottish ferry captain, is depicted with such depth, showcasing his struggles as a dedicated single father to his charming six-year-old son, Finn.

When Blair faces personal and career challenges in the bustling city of New York, she decides to escape to her grandmother's quaint hometown in Scotland. There, she finds a fulfilling job as a nanny for Lachlan’s son, which not only gives her a sense of purpose but also immerses her in the heartwarming dynamics of their lives. Inspired by her experiences, she begins writing a children's book that she shares with Finn in an effort to rekindle her love for children's literature, reminding herself of her past career struggles.

The portrayal of grief in this story is handled with great sensitivity, adding emotional depth to the story. Furthermore, Finn, with his playful innocence, and Gus, the delightful golden retriever, bring joy and lightness to the story with their endearing antics. The chemistry between Lachlan and Blair is compelling, filled with tension and charm, and their playful banter provides numerous laugh-out-loud moments throughout the book, making it a truly delightful read.

OH. MY. CAPTAIN!! This was so freaking cute! All the things. All the feels. All the giddy happiness.

Lachlan is a grumpy, Scottish, ferry captain and an amazing single father to his adorable 6 year old, Finn. After unexpectedly losing his childcare for the summer holiday, he’s forced to find a nanny… PRONTO! Cue, Blair. Quirky, outgoing and the biggest ray of sunshine. Scotland was supposed to be her escape from reality but soon becomes her NEW reality.

Oh my goodness 😱🥹 I loved every second. The authors did an amazing job of transporting me straight to the Scottish coast. They created two of my new favorite characters with so much tension and amazing chemistry. I lived for the banter and burst out laughing more than once. And little Finn 🥹🥹🥹 stole my whole heart!! Also - animal sidekick… perfection 👌 Gus, literal golden retriever and all time favorite book dog!

This book made me happy! It was everything I wanted and more. All the Outlander references made me kick my feet with glee! Take me to Scotland right now!!! And if anyone can find me a plant named Gerald, that’d be fantastic!

After losing everything after her boss put her name on an app that was a failure, she was fired. Not only that but Blair now has no opportunity of doing the job she loves which is being a book editor for children’s books. After talking to her parents, she decided to travel to Scotland to see if she can find the house where her grandmother grew up before moving to Toronto. After arriving in Scotland, she met Lachlan who seems to be a grumpy single dad of a six-year-old son named Finn. Of course, I fell in love with the whole bunch right from the start. Because the neighbor lady was tripped by Gus, Lachlan’s golden retriever, and fractured her wrist, he had to find a nanny for the six weeks Finn would be out of school for the summer. Blair found the ad and applied. From there, the story shows the ups and downs, grumpiness and the apologizing, and laughter when finding there were no secrets to be had. I loved this story from beginning to end without a dull moment.

Nautical and Nice ⛴️

It’s Pumpkin Spice Latte season but this Amy MacGavin romance is more of a hot chocolate with a chilli kick—and marshmallows on top.

Let’s start with the hot. Grumpy ferry captain Lachlan has the right to be a little frayed around the edges. Since his wife passed away, he’s been raising his young son alone in the coastal Highland village of Ardmara. It’s a delightful little town and Lachlan has a close knit bunch of mates (cue the other single dads that we will meet in the rest of the series), but this gruff widower is lonely. And won’t let himself be anything but.

Enter, effervescent American nanny, Blair, to look after Lachlan’s son, Finn, for the summer holidays. She’s the chocolate—sweet and moreish and everyone loves her. With Blair’s winning ways with Lachlan’s son, and the man himself, it isn’t long until she’s chipping down his walls, making him smile, and lots more besides.

Which leads us to the chilli. Don’t let the small town cosy vibes fool you. Behind closed doors someone’s left the heating on and the cosiness gets ramped up to hot! Lachlan might not have a zillion notches on his bedpost, but his years of steering a ship across the sound has afforded him some transferable skills and he’s very much the captain of the bedroom, too.

The grumpy sunshine trope is a firm favourite with many readers, and it’s presented well here. The characters fit the descriptions without overkill. The tension between Lachlan and Blair is believable whilst being worthy of the trope. Add in the adorable Finn and you’ve got marshmallows on top of your chilli hot choc.

Captain of my Heart is the perfect fireside read after an Autumn walk in the woods or a blustery run on the beach. You’ll stay up until the wee hours finishing it.

Note - As a Scot I do think the authors missed a trick in not calling ferry captain, Lachlan, Glen Sannox, though. ;)

Blair never thought her career would end this way, even when it's not even her to blame. But here she is no job, people pointing her out for something she didn't do, and losing the one thing she really loved. Not only did her career end but losing her grandmother makes her totally rethink her life. Having a break from the States and going to visit her grandmothers home country Scotland. Lachlan is raising his six year old son on his own. Working as a ferry captain keeps him busy, whilst having help from his neighbour with his son. Now the summer holidays are approaching and he finds himself needing a nanny. When the young woman he caught peeping in his friends window turns up he fears for the outcome. However there's just something about her. Two total opposites. She's friendly, outgoing, and everyone just loves her. He's organised, grumpy, and not very friendly. How are they going to cope for six weeks. Between a lively golden retriever name Gus, and obvious grammar differences (chips = French fries) the outcome is quite hilarious. With the right amount a steamy moments this make a perfect read. Showing how moving on and be a good thing when you do it with the right person. But will a job offer from the States prove too much to resist. I loved this book and can't wait for the next in this series

Firstly, thank you, Amy McGavin, for the ARC of your new Scottish Single Dad Series! I binged it in one night and loved it!!

The ultimate Grumpy Sunshine read, and god was Lachlan grumpy!
I loved the dynamic between the two. The seriousness of life keeps moving, following the schedule, Lachlan and the book obsessed, needs a job, and loves to push his buttons Nanny, Blair.

The sweet moment between Blair and Finn and even Gus 😍. Being a parent and having a pal whose kids are feral is very relatable, and the small town is the definition of it takes a village. I can't wait to hear more about the other two single dads in the village!

I loved the friendships built between the MCs and the side characters, and when the grumpy captain wall finally came down, my god did it crumble!!

Utterly obsessed, even a wee tear in my eye at the grief element. The highs were high, the lows were low, and the banter was feet kickingly perfect!!

Thank you both again so much!! I'm so excited to read more from you!!

Such a lovely heart touching story.
When things go disasterously wrong for Blair in New York, she visits her grandmother's home town in Scotland to get away for a while before rebuilding. She quickly falls in love with Scotland (which is understandable and relatable)
Blair applies for the job of nanny to Finn, an adorable 6 year old, whose dad is the grumpy ferry captain. Meant to only be a summer job, can Blair bring herself to leave when the summer is up?

Captain of My Heart did NOT disappoint!! This Grumpy/Sunshine story set in Scotland launched with all kinds of banter, plenty of sass, and oh, so much chemistry! My heart was truly touched - I wasn’t expecting the grief component. 🥺

Gus 🦮 & Finn 👦🏻 are the cutest of cute characters! They steal the show & I almost feel like I need to go find them the next time I visit Scotland just because I’m clearly part of the family now!

As an added bonus, there are several Outlander references throughout and if you know me at all, you know I’m obsessed - it feels like this story was written just for me! 💙🤍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙🤍

Grump to her Sunshine
Having to find a nanny quickly Lachlan ends up hiring the beautiful American Blair to look after his 6 year old son Finn.
The chemistry between the two is electric and the banter is so hilarious at times.
With fabulous characters, a great setting and storyline, then add in a cute golden retriever named Gus and this story really is special.
I adored it and can’t wait for more in this series.
Well worth reading especially if you love your romance set in a quaint little town in the Scottish Highlands.

Grumpy Sea Captain and Nanny

4.5⭐️ Blair travels to Scotland after losing her job and takes a job as a nanny for the summer for Lachlan’s son. She stays in a small guest house on his property and quickly gets hooked on his son and dog. Lachlan is a harder sell, but he falls for her charm as well. This has great descriptions of Scotland’s beauty and a fun community of characters. The MCs are likable and there is spice.

Great dual pov story of American Blair and Scottish Lachlan. They come
together as Blair is visiting Scotland, land of her Granny, and she wants to stay longer. She finds a job working as Lachlan's son Finn nanny. Throw in a golden retriever Gus, a small village and a summer full of adventure for all of them. Loving this series so looking forward to reading more of it.

What an exquisite story about finding your place! Captain Grumpypants learns to live again after facing heartbreak. Blair discovers she's more than a scapegoat. All set in Scotland. The book is written so you feel like one of the characters, and there are several who play an integral part of the story. Great book! KU

Having already fallen in love with this author duo’s writing style, it was easy to fall into this new story. I love spending time in their Scottish Highlands!! This has everything I expected - great characters, cute Scottish small town energy, adorable kids, hot single dads, steamy chemistry, and a fantastic HEA. It was hard to stop reading this story, as the pages seemed to turn themselves. Love it!!

This story centers on Lachlan, a ferry captain, and his son, Finn. It hasn’t been easy for Lachlan to rebound after the loss of his wife, but he’s doing his best, with the support of his friends (who are also single dads). Given the circumstances, his grumpiness and emotional restraint are totally understandable. The last thing he has patience for is a young, sunshiney American, who lands in his town.

Blair’s life in New York is full of personal and professional problems. She decides to visit her beloved Granny’s home of Scotland, a place she knew would help her reset. She ends up in Ardmara with no specific plan. Her worries were unnecessary, for the magic of the Highlands has a heartwarming journey prepared for her, provided she is strong enough to embrace it.

I found it simple to connect with these characters because they each have complex emotions that need to be addressed before they can heal, which drew me into the story.

I found it very entertaining to watch Blair bond with the town and Finn, and settle in as his nanny. He has no idea that she holds the secret to his recovery and his second chance at love. The chemistry between Lachlan and Blair was intensified by their close proximity, and their sizzling connection would inevitably be hard to maintain as a Nanny and employer relationship. I really enjoyed the banter between the characters, and the way the town supported this coupling.

I’m so excited to see what happens next in this town! I recommend reading more from this author duo. I was fortunate to have received an ARC of this story (thank you), and happily leave my thoughts.

Let's just say that I haven't read something so real and heartwarming in a long time.

The pacing was brilliantly executed to make everything cohesive and meaningful, which is an aspect many stories lack. It’s the sense of reality that makes you truly believe in happenings like these.

Blair faced a truly terrible situation that led her out of NY to lick her wounds, bringing her to her grandmother's hometown in Scotland. There, she meets Lachlan, a stoic and reserved ferry captain who needs a nanny for the summer to care for his son, Finn, and his dog, Gus.

The way she handles the new circumstances in her life is so mature and thoughtful; and the unfolding of the love story is so natural that I felt like I was listening to one of my closest friends tell me about their own romantic relationship.

The vibe/atmosphere of the town is amazing, the secondary characters are truly a treasure, the children are blissfully cute and so well-written (kudos to the author, as crafting child characters this perfectly is a rare feat), and Lachlan comes to life, little by little, in every chapter. He gains the kind of light that love infuses into your soul... and it was beautiful to read. And the steamy scenes were really hot! It's rare to find a vulnerable male character in the physical aspect of intimacy, and it was so heartwarming and grounding. I'll say it again: this book is incredibly real. 10/10

I can't wait to read about Douglas and Ellie, and Struan and Ainsley.

This is the first in the new Scottish Single Dads series and I loved every minute of it. Lachlan Munro is a widowed ferry captain with the most adorable son Finn, and a golden retriever called Gus. He is grumpy and set in his ways he loves a good schedule and hasn't stepped on the island where he grew up in 4 years since his wife passed away. Even though he sails the ferry there every day!

Blair Turner was in children's publishing in New York until she got set up to take the fall for something and lost her career. She travels to Scotland to visit the hometown of her beloved grandma and to get away from the public scrutiny.

Lachlan needs a nanny for the summer holidays and Blair needs somewhere to stay. After an unfortunate run in Lachlan reluctantly hires Blair. so, she ends up looking after 6-year-old Finn and Gus (even though she isn't a fan of dogs) and lives in the granny flat in the backyard. The interactions between Lachlan and Blair are laugh out loud funny. He is struggling with having someone so vibrant and forward in his back yard and is having thoughts that he didn't think he would have again after his wife's passing (they were childhood sweethearts so there was only her). The culture shock for Blair was also hilarious and made for some really funny moments.

This was an awesome book! I loved the characters, the setting and the interactions between the characters.

Finn is hilarious and very curious (and smart). He really likes Blair when he meets her. She's his nanny for six weeks. She's visiting Scotland right now.

Lachlan isn't sure about Blair at first, but as time goes by, and he sees the way she interacts with his son, feelings begin to change…

When her time is up with Finn, she says her goodbyes. She waits after she tells Lachlan, maybe to see if he's going to ask her to stay, or if he'll say anything, but when he doesn't, she plans to leave.

Her friend Ellie throws her a going away party and Lachlan's friend tells him he'd better tell her how he feels before she goes. When Lachlan finally gets his nerve up to tell her his feelings, everyone is so happy! Especially Blair.

This was a book about when life throws you a curveball, dust off your boots and get back up. This is my first read of these authors and I am a fan! You are going to love this book!
