All Or None is the second book in the Detective Ryan Murder Mystery series which takes place in Australia.

In this story Ryan have now moved from the Organized Crime Unit that we saw in the first book, to the Homicide Division, back in Sydney.

The story opens with a prologue that gives details of a road accident, which occurred twenty years ago. The first chapter then takes us to Ryan’s first day at the new job and already there is a suspicious death which needs investigating.

Ryan is soon under pressure from his boss to solve this case as his investigations involve a company that sponsors a boat for police-force children; his boss doesn’t want any embarrassments for himself or his officers.

There are several other story threads, one of them involves a poker tournament. While following up on an enquiry at the poker venue, Ryan bumps into an old friend, Heidi, from his college days. It adds a little romantic interlude and a potential distraction from Ryan’s workload.

This was a story of two halves, for me. I liked the first half and found that the investigation moved at a good pace with plenty of drama and several potential suspects. However, I thought that the second half tried too hard to be entertaining, but missed being a gripping crime tale.

(Review is 3.5 ⭐️)

All or None is the second book in the ‘Detective Ryan’ series by Clive Fleury and we’ve moved on a couple of years from the events of book one, Off Season.

His passion for justice remains just as intense as it was in the first book, and I appreciated his determination to seek justice for those who have passed. I was excited to find out how he would handle this latest case and what kinds of misdirection the investigators might encounter.  Off Season had been clever bringing in the end of one case and its repercussions before the main story itself unfolded. However, All or None took longer to draw me in — perhaps because I wasn't sure how the events from the prologue, set twenty years before the current storyline, connected with what Detectives Ryan and Yang were called upon to investigate. The murder in the present day had the two on the backfoot from day one because nothing came together for them and then were only further heightened when a second murder occurred and there seemed to be something in common with the two. The events may well have happened quick and fast for the homicide detectives to keep on top of, but it took them a while to connect the dots. Especially as it would appear that the perpetrator liked to keep an eye on the sites of his crimes.

The murders and the mystery around them is captivating, and the author skilfully maintains suspense around both the identity of the killer and the victim. The story also explores the reasons behind who is targeted and why the deaths occur, keeping readers guessing throughout.  Fleury does bring the crime to life without it becoming gory for the sake of it, and we do get to see how the police work together to get an answer.

Det. Ramesh Ryan is a hard worker, and he’s fierce in his desire to get justice and he has a lot on his plate with this case as he’s got his higher ups breathing down his neck. Nonetheless, when someone from Ryan's past reappears and his mother wants him to consider settling down with someone and start a family, Ryan appears preoccupied and overextended.

In my opinion Ryan then takes out his frustration on Yang and doesn’t treat her with respect.  The tension between the two officers is clear and they have a shared history, but a flashback or more context would help readers relate to either one of them. Whilst I’d quite liked our leading man in Off Season; I found him to be unpleasant and not very relatable. He continues to not understand the concept of a partnership - I’d have thought someone who would have worked with others prior to when we met him in Off Season, would understand keeping someone in the dark as a police officer would put them at risk. Yes, it’s fiction but it was another flaw in his character.

I would have loved more of the city of Sydney in the book, just to make the world-building a little more immersive because that’s one of the things I liked about the first book when Detective Ryan spent time in a rural area. While I thought the mystery was well done overall, I had trouble connecting with Detective Ryan in his new setting of the Harbour City. I enjoy getting fully immersed in a book, especially when there’s a lot happening, but this one just didn’t pull me in.

Detective Ryan returns!

All Or None is the second novel in author Clive Fleury's Australian police detective series, the Detective Ryan Mysteries, which debuted with the excellent OFF SEASON in 2024. Two years have passed since the events of the previous book. Ryan has returned to Sydney from his exile to the Central Coast and has just been transferred from the Organized Crime Unit to New South Wales Homicide. To his surprise and consternation, he is partnered with his former coworker, Zoe Yang, now a detective and also a new, unwanted addition to the team like himself. Their first case, a dead man discovered in a cabin in the national park, proves to be genuinely baffling, and the partners are under extreme pressure from their chief to find the killer as soon as possible. But things only get more complicated when a second death, with connections to the first, occurs soon after.

Once again, Detective Inspector Ryan is a strong and worthy protagonist as he and Yang continue to negotiate their working relationship while conducting a well-executed investigation. Both detectives are dealing with issues in their personal lives, as well as outdated workplace attitudes that could distract a less disciplined team. Ryan's mother, one of my favorite characters, is also facing health issues and doubles down on her efforts to get her son married and starting a family, perhaps a result of confronting her own mortality. Meanwhile, Ryan reunites with another woman from his past.

The book starts with a shocking accident from 20 years earlier, but there are even more surprises in store for readers. The story unfolds from multiple points of view, including the killer's, which is creepy and unsettling, and several storylines are in play throughout. The author juggles these separate threads with ease, keeping them clear and distinct until they cleverly converge. The writing style is engaging and compelling, and I was so absorbed that I almost completed this entire book in one session. I had to know how the story was going to resolve as soon as I could.

I recommend ALL OR NONE to readers of mysteries, crime fiction, and thrillers.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advance Review Copy from the author through Goddess Fish Promotions Book Tours.

Having gotten sucked into the first of @clivefleuryhere Detective Ryan mysteries, I couldn't wait to get stuck into the second.

Rather than the "fish out of water" scenario that saw Ryan head out to a small coastal town, this time we meet him on his home turf of Sydney, although he's now taking on a new role in the Homicide team.

Being back in Ryan's home town lets us see more of who he is at home, and we get a deeper insight into his relationship with his mother, and also see that his detecting skills are sharper than ever. Joining him on the Homicide team is Zoe Yang, who he previously worked with, and I love that we get to see their relationship develop further as well as learning more about their lives outside of being detectives.

Ryan's first day in Homicide sees him faced with a case immediately, with the death of a high powered executive, in mysterious circumstances, and it's a case that brings with it the weight of departmental politics. Multiple sub-plots keep the action moving, and the novel is fast-paced and really keeps you sucked in. Ryan is a calm presence in the midst of chaos as his past investigating Organised Crime rears its ugly head.

I enjoyed this a lot I really like Detective Ryan as a character and totally find him fascinating. The relationships he does and doesn’t build and the dimensions along the way really support the story.

For context this is the second book on this detective from Clive Fleury and sees him back in Sydney promoted and dealing with bigger cases. This may be why I didn’t love it as much as the first, I did enjoy it a lot.

The plot was good and you could guess a little the throughout with lots of affluence, scandal and gangster behaviour. What makes these books for me are the main character and his relationship with his mom, work colleagues and lover.

It’s fun and well written and has little quirks of softness in between.

“Ryan had always felt like a fish out of water.’

Two years has passed since we met Ramesh Ryan and we catch up with him on his first day in his new job posting. He’s now officially a detective on the New South Wales Homicide squad and everyone knows it, from the local organized crime kingpin to the dealers at the local casino. When his boss springs, Zoe, the newly appointed detective from the Central Coast, and his partner from book one, on him as his permanent partner he’s not exactly thrilled. He likes working alone. It’s highly enjoyable watching him not only navigate his first homicide case, but his partner’s frustrations at working with him, while also getting to know his mother and her dream of grandchildren and dating that brings even more chaos and stress into our leading man’s life. Absolutely fantastic and here’s to hoping there are more stories in our future!

I am an ARC reader for Book Sirens and this is my honest opinion. This book two in the story of Detective Ramesh Ryan and I enjoyed it every bit as much as book one. Ryan is an Australian, born in Britain to an Indian mother who likes to cling to some Indian traditions. In book one, Ryan was sent to a small town North of Sydney to sort out a problem and met constable Zoe Yang. Two years on, she is also a detective and Ryan's partner, not without a few adjustment problems. This author quite skilfully introduces several characters and threads to the story one after the other, telling the reader where they are in relation to each other and what they're doing. The book started with an event that happened in the past, that I admit I'd forgotten about until Ryan starts to put things together. For me, the mysteries remain mysteries until the end of the book. Great characters, great world building and a Good read.

Not three, but not four… I'll give it 3.5 stars.

I felt this book was better suited as a screenplay and not a novel. There was so little character development that it might have been better played out on a television screen (but not a movie screen) to see the characters' reactions and/or characteristics. And such worn-out characters….the gruff business developer, the overweight organized crime kingpin, the dumb muscle for said fat guy, the annoying mother. All were left to the reader's imagination to develop, with really nothing other than cliches to go on.

But, beside that, there were too many inconsistencies throughout the story that caused me to pause and say, that's not right. If a rope is supporting a heavy weight, it's going to be much easier to just cut the rope than to unknot it by hand. If a CEO has any kind of newer car, it's going to have Bluetooth. If a murder suspect is hospitalized and in bed, he's going to be restrained. Little things, but they add up.

The mystery itself was okay and the solution cleared things up. All in all, this was pretty routine.

This mystery has multiple story threads which keep things interesting and keep the reader guessing how things are going to turn out. First, we have the protagonist, Detective Ramesh Ryan, who has just been promoted to a new position as a homicide detective. The challenges of being in a new position and figuring out how to work with and interact with others in the department is a challenge. That his partner was just transferred from another city and is learning her job as well as the both of them figuring out how to make their team work complicates things still further. Throw in some happenings in Ryan’s personal life and things get more complicated. All of this just makes figuring out the mystery and where the story is going to go that much less clear for the reader which is a positive for a mystery. The results are an engaging and entertaining read that draws the reader in as you try to figure things out along with Detective Ryan.

This is shaping up to be a really enjoyable detective series.

The plot kept me turning the pages with plenty of twists (& some secondary plot lines on the personal side for both main characters) and a couple of times I laughed out loud.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

It didn't feel quite as well written as the first novel in the series (a little bit hurried and some of the "gangster thread" elements felt slightly contrived, but still definitely worth reading a second time.

A page turner.
Book 1 in the series, Off Season is a superb crime thriller… and this picks up nicely where it left off
Whilst intricately plotted is reasonably easy to follow. Characters are interesting and whilst insight into character is not a big feature, they do hold your attention but the incredibly clever plot is definitely the feature here. It does feel like the scene has been set for much more exploration of the main character in #3. which I’m hoping will be forthcoming.
Hopefully the series continues.

I loved this so much!

Detectives Ryan and Yang are back - this time in Sydney.

Ramesh has been moved up to Homicide and he had an unexpected surprise when his new partner is none other that Zoey!! Together they have to solve the murder of one of the owners of a big hotel chain.

I can start off by saying I loved this so much more than the first one. It just worked!! We knew some of the characters already so that helped but I think it's also the style of writing that I am falling in love with.

There is some lovely banter between Ramesh and his mom and between him and Zoey as well and it definitely makes the book stand out so much more. And then Ramesh - isn't he just the best - so clever and sharp - I love how he figures things out before anyone else is even on the right page never-ending the right sentence.

There was more than one murder which added some layers to the story and yes - you guesed it - another mafia boss!! I love the mafia related crime thriller and I think @clivefleuryhere definitely has a winner with this series. The plot was excellent and well thought out and I adore the main characters and yes that includes mumta! Would definitely be a great read for any crime thriller fans!

All or None by Clive Fleury is a book in the Detective Ryan mystery series by the author. You can read this book as a standalone book, even though it is in the series. Detective Ryan is our MC who is a detective and a Indian man with Indian heritage. He finds out his mother was having a small procedure at the hospital in the beginning of the book on the morning of her birthday and rushes to make sure everything is okay. I really liked the relationship between Ryan and his mother, he is worried when she tells him about why she is there at the hospital, and as an older woman I think we can all say we worry about doctors finding that. Very relatable! Ryan finds out while working on a case that Detective Yang is joining him in Sydney and that she is a detective now. This is in reference to previous books and their relationship. The story is fast paced and the mystery in trying to figure out why someone is murdered was good. I liked the ending it really opens the book to more Detective Ryan books in the future that I would like to read.

All is not as it seems on the surface. Ryan and his partner are both new to homicide. The department is a bit of a clique-like, and they doubt Ryan and Yang's expertise. Yang was an excellent, fit partner for Ryan. They were both intuitive and intelligent. The poker players are highstakes. Ryan has an inside track with an old friend and now professional poker player. I liked that Dan had Ryan and Yang's backs in the end. This is a fast paced behind the scenes look at crime. A thrilling and engrossing read. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest review.

As an ARC reader, I can say All or None exceeded my expectations. The murders kept me guessing, but what I loved most was Ryan himself tough on the outside, vulnerable on the inside, and surrounded by challenges that made him relatable.

I devoured this ARC in two sittings. The tension builds perfectly, and the clues are woven in so well that you feel like you’re investigating alongside Ryan and Zoe. The personal subplots (his mom, the romance, even the rats!) add depth without slowing down the action.

Detective Ryan has a unique way of investigation. The man has fine tuned instinct. But when it comes to his love life, he fails big time. His mother's preserving him for Grandchildren does not help. Her frequent doctor Apts. has Detective Ryan thinking the worst on his Mother's health. Det. Ryan's new Partner is also pretty smart, though Ryan kinda has her at arms length on sharing his thoughts on the investigations. Really enjoyed this book from Book Siren. Thanks for the read.

4.5 rounded up. I like Detective Ryan and enjoyed his dealings with a newly assigned junior partner Zoe Yang. Ryan is not the sharing type and Zoe was the perfect personality to bring him a bit away from his isolation.

The mystery is solid, and Ryan is under considerable pressure to solve it quickly. Ryan, however, works in his own fashion and at his own time.

The appearance of an old flame of Ryan's added some humor and a new layer to the story.

I found Ryan's relationship with his mother a plus in the last book, but it seemed a tiresome distraction in this one, dropping the book from 5 to 4.5 stars.

ARC Review

All or None by Clive Fleury is the second book in the Detective Ryan Mystery series.

Detective Ramesh Ryan has returned to Sydney and has been promoted to the Homicide Squad. Although he prefers working alone, his boss assigns him a partner, Zoe Yang, a woman he has worked with in the past. On their very first day together, they are called to investigate a murder. They follow every lead they uncover, but the case proves difficult to solve. Soon, a second murder emerges that may be connected to the first. During the investigation, Ryan becomes distracted by the reappearance of an old friend, adding even more pressure as time slips away.

This is an interesting mystery with a slow-burn narrative, a large cast of characters, and several side stories woven throughout. I enjoyed the way Ryan approached his work. He doesn’t say much, can be demanding, but is highly competent and methodical. Zoe is almost his opposite in personality, yet they complement each other well as partners. I also appreciated his relationship with his mother and the way she encourages him to think about settling down and starting a family.

For me, the story would have been stronger if it were a bit shorter. At times, the pacing felt slow and certain sections seemed to drag unnecessarily.

Overall, it’s a compelling story that mystery lovers will enjoy, and I’m happy to recommend it.

All or None returns Detective Ramesh Ryan to center stage two years after the events of Off Season, and the series settles comfortably into its stride. Promoted to the Homicide Squad, Ryan teams up with Zoe Yang, now a detective herself, and together they step into a case that quickly proves more layered than it first appears.

Clive Fleury weaves multiple threads through the investigation, letting the mystery unfold at a brisk pace without losing clarity. High-stakes poker, organized crime, and murder raise the tension, while quieter character moments keep the story grounded. Ryan and Zoe carry the narrative with ease, and the supporting cast has enough depth to feel purposeful rather than decorative.

The personal pressure on Ryan adds a welcome human layer, especially in the scenes with his mother. Those sequences bring warmth and humor that soften the harder edges of the casework without undercutting the stakes.

While All or None can be read as a stand-alone, reading Off Season first adds context and makes the relationships and continuity land with more impact. This is a confident second installment, fast-moving and thoughtfully constructed, that rewards attention without demanding it.

Moving swiftly on from reading the first book in this series - Off Season - at the start of the month, I'm back with the second book in the Detective Ryan mystery series.

I have to admit feeling a little disjointed with this one as technical issues made this a tough read - but rest assured, this was purely an issue with my file and not the book itself.

For this reason, I'm intending on re-reading this to get a better sense of the flow within this book itself.

That aside though, we see this book continuing on from the first, but a few years have passed and Ryan is back in Sydney with a new promotion and a new junior partner, the lovely Zoe.

This story takes us straight to the action with a case that gets more complex, the more they uncover the clues. What makes things worse is there are also links to previous events and Ryan finds himself a target.

I love that we got to see more of both the work side of Ryan as well as developing his personal life.

I found it much easier to connect to both characters by seeing the other relationships in their lives and I loved seeing Ryan with his mum.

This was overall another great read and I really hope that we get to see more books in this series and see how life pans out in future books.

Good, not as good as previous🌏

3.5🌟 stars
The murder plot was good, but I felt the prologue seemingly unconnected to the rest of the story until near the end, just had me asking why and not in a good way. I am not especially fond of this technique. Rajesh Ryan, the main character, was a bit hard to like, too, especially in the way he keeps his partner Zoe Yang in the dark.

The Australian locale for this series first got me interested in Clive Fleury's detective novels. Although the story is set in Sydney it could have been anywhere; there's not a lot that distinguishes it from any other area. The previous book, Off Season, had the pair working together in a rural part of Australia. I liked that one better.

Thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Just finished an ARC of All or None which was sent to me for an honest review, and I really enjoyed it. Detective Ryan is back in Sydney, thrown into the chaos of the homicide squad, and paired up again with rookie detective Zoe Yang. Their dynamic is great to follow, and together they make a solid (if sometimes reluctant) team. The murder mystery itself is layered, with threads tying back to the past, while Ryan’s personal life—his mother, his apartment troubles, even an old flame—adds humor and heart in between the darker moments. The pacing kept me hooked, and the mix of crime, character depth, and a touch of romance made it a really satisfying read.

Definitely a solid follow-up in the Detective Ryan mysteries—I’ll be looking out for the next one!

Disclaimer: this is my first book in the series, but the story works fine as a standalone. The first chapter started off quite slowly, then suddenly escalated towards the end. From there, the real story begins with Detective Ryan. The slice-of-life moments we get mixed in with the mystery were nice, and helped really introduce the characters, especially for readers new to the series (like me). The mystery itself progressed at a bit of an uneven pace, but it worked out well in the end. Everything was tied up neatly, no cliffhangers to worry about. Overall, I’d call this a good mystery with solid cozy elements. If you enjoy leisurely paced mysteries with interesting characters and complex dynamics between those characters, then you’ll enjoy this!

Out of everything that happened in this book, I have one pressing question. Does Alex ever find out about Faith? If you read this, you'll see why I ask. I had a feeling about him from the start and that's all I'm going to say on that before I give anything away. This was super good. I was wondering how everything was going to tie in and that was so good. There's a few things I want to say that I loved but I can't because it will spoil something, so I will just say this. Definitely pick this one up. It's very worth a read.

This is a satisfying mystery that will keep you on edge.

The characters felt so real and everything so plausible so at times you forget you are reading fiction. This would actually make a wonderful movie.

The happenings in this book are complex and there are many themes and situations layered throughout to give a full experience.

The Detective Ryan Mystery series is a very well done one and this installment will either leave you wanting more or lead you to catch up with the first one ASAP.
