Still coming to terms with her mermaid heritage, Alex Daniels gets pulled into solving a puzzling serial killer cold case. Working at her aunt's enchanted herbal apothecary in a charming beach town during cozy fall, she finds herself drawn into this magical cozy mystery, the third book in the Enchanted Bay Mystery series.
Aleksandra Daniels is settling into her new home in Bellamy Bay, North Carolina. She loves her apothecary job, and is enjoying getting to know her boyfriend, local detective Jack Frazier. But she’s still trying to figure out her magical powers.
Leaves are changing, pumpkins are being picked, and the small coastal town is caught in the excitement of the approaching Oktoberfest. Alex’s friend Pepper is more excited by the anniversary of a cold case she’s helping her boss, Jonah, investigate. In the eighties, a serial killer abducted ten local women and was never caught, the women never seen again.
Pepper asks Alex for help, but she’s done solving mysteries. She’d rather be with Jack sharing apple cider. That won't happen if she keeps meddling in his investigations.
When Jonah’s body is found on the beach, Alex is forced to reconsider. Soon she’s caught in a plot that places her life and the lives of everyone she loves in terrible danger.
An intricately plotted, quirky and charming book that gives you an enticing genre-blend of cozy mystery, contemporary fantasy and a hint of sci-fi. Fans of Esme Addison’sAn Intrigue of Witchesas well as Iris Beaglehole, Amanda Flower and Ellery Adams shouldn’t miss this “enchanting read” (Kirkus Reviews).
I listened to the audiobook of this story. At first, I didn't think that I was going to like this story. Some of the personalities of some of the characters were "rubbing me the wrong way". I stuck with it and am pleasantly surprised that it is as good as I was hoping. This is an interesting blend of mystery and fantasy (magicalism). I like the close-knit small town vibe and the history of the families that are there and have been, for generations. The characters are interesting and the story somewhat complex.
A young woman, Alex, is a relative newcomer to Bellamy Bay, NC. She's wrangled, by her friend Pepper, into helping to solve a decades old cold case regarding the disappearance of several women from their coastal town. There are a number of other mysteries that the local police are looking into also. Alex's current boyfriend, Jack, is a detective on the police force looking into the murder of a local craft brewer and an unknown woman found on the beach. Jack, knowing Alex's penchant for solving mysteries, asks her not to look into the current murders. Aelx agrees to help Pepper and to not meddle into Jack's investigations. We all know that how "best intentions" can go awry; that happens when Alex discovers that everything seems to be linked in some way.
A very well written tale of murder and intrigue in a small NC coastal town with some magic sprinkled into the mix.
I do not like Jack! I cannot say that sentence enough. Jack thinks he is on the right side of the law, doing what needs to be done to protect the many, but he is actually part of the problem.
I love the ending of this story and the mystery that will take us into the next installment. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series when it has been written and published.
Emily Durante did a great job narrating this story.
Mermaids, magic and.... serial killers? Cozy, fantasy filled with family as they try to get to the bottom of a serial killer case from decades ago. As they search for answers to what happened to all the missing women, a new body shows up and nothing is what it seems.
I’m glad we’re done with Jack! I didn’t like him from the beginning and this book made me hate him. Also can we not gloss over how Jack’s father took advantage of an essentially special needs woman and created a child 🤢. I’m ready for the next book knowing she is closer to finding her mom.
