I was born and raised in New Jersey in a very close-knit family. For most of my childhood, we lived within walking distance of both sets of grandparents and saw them almost every day. I majored in Education in college and taught middle school for four years before deciding to attend law school. I practiced law until 2012 as an in-house Litigation Counsel for a large corporation. At that time, I decided to embrace my creative side and switched my focus from writing trial briefs to writing novels, and I never looked back. My husband and I currently live in the rolling hills of northern New Jersey, where we enjoy taking walks and spending time with our family and friends. I love sharing my stories and hearing from readers, so please don't hesitate to contact me!

I understand this was the author's second novel. I found it to be a very good effort and the author demonstrated a genuine talent for writing that should successfully continue her promising literary journey.

The story is set in the late-1980's about a woman (the FMC) who was a rising star lawyer at a prestigious Manhattan law firm. She had just been promoted to junior partner at that firm and was named to lead an important breech of contract suit representing a high tech company located in Vermont. She meets the MMC, the high tech company's CEO who became enamored with her. The problem was that her law firm had a strict, zero-tolerance policy against having intimate relationships with clients. The MMC seduces her anyway and she fell for him hard afterwards. Even though she wins the case for the high tech company she represents, rumors of her relationship with the MMC began moving around her law firm's office. She ends up getting fired in spite of her success in that important case. After that, the story headed off into several directions and challenges that got eventually tied up and resolved towards the end of the book. And yes, there was a HEA.

Overall, I recommend this book.

Samantha’s story in the legal world of 80s NYC transported me to a simpler time when progress was being made. The protagonist deftly winds her way through significant professional and personal challenges with the help of close friends and family. At a time of chaos and uncertainty, I appreciated spending time with this well-written, inspirational novel.

As in her first novel A Different Sky, author Randie Berman uses her personal life experience to enrich her novel. 207 West End Avenue protagonist Samantha Ross is an up-and-coming young female attorney at a NYC law firm in the male-dominated 1980s. Times are changing, what is and is not acceptable professionally and personally for this smart young woman, how she learns to navigate her life—-Berman illuminates her challenges and makes us admire and care about how she manages the people and situations that confront her.

Samantha Ross is the first in her family to graduate from college.

She is a young female lawyer who resides in a modest apartment on the upper West End side of New York City. She works for a prestigious law firm, which undoubtedly offers numerous advantages. She is a prominent figure within the firm, as evidenced by her promotion at the age of 32. Samantha is the youngest female to become a partner in the company’s history.

Will Samantha succeed as a lawyer in New York City?

Will she remain resolute in her pursuit of her goals?

What challenges will she face?

Will she encounter obstacles that require her to overcome them without succumbing to defeat?

I highly recommend that you read this book to discover the answers to these questions.

All the characters captivated my attention.

This book seamlessly blends business and personal elements, resulting in a compelling narrative.

I find this author’s work to be ultimately captivating, and this is the second book I have read from her. I eagerly anticipate exploring more of her literary creations.

To describe this book as fast paced and compelling is actually an understatement. Berman takes us on a roller-coaster ride with Sam Ross, an up-and-coming lawyer, as she negotiates the complexities of her personal and professional life. I became absorbed in Sam’s world at the first page and couldn’t drag myself away from it until the last. I’m hoping there will be another book from this talented author very soon. Highly recommended.

207 West End captivated me from the beginning. The characters were well developed. I enjoyed discovering life in New York in the eighties. I rooted for Sam, a young female attorney as she maneuvered her personal life against her professional life. I learned about the legal system, and cheered Sam on when she tackled women’s rights and sexual harassment cases.. Beautifully written book that I highly recommend.

Ms Berman did not disappoint in her second novel!

Loved this book from beginning to end! Her depiction of 1980’s New York City’s single scene was spot on. Her characters were relatable and interesting. Her depictions of the legal field and all the inter workings behind the scenes were fascinating (think “Suits”) altogether a terrific read! Can’t wait for her third novel…

This one didn’t make me believe in it. Felt like even the author wasn’t sure there was a story to tell. Bad decisions, unlikely outcomes and yet the main character still wanted her fairytale ending. Everything was just a little too easy for her. Lesson learned is missing here. Yet so many 5 star reviews??

4.0. I choose to read this book because of the reviews. It’s the story of a Samantha a young high profile lawyer. Her life becomes complicated when she meets Michael a successful owner of a tech company. The story takes place in the 1980s. As strong and smart and successful of a woman Samantha was, there were parts of the story where I found her character to be annoying. In the end, Samantha ends up with Michael…predictable and a cliche.

“207 West End Avenue” by Randie K. Berman is a disciplined, intelligent novel that examines ambition, power, and professional accountability in the tightly regulated world of 1980s Manhattan corporate law. Grounded in a specific historical moment, the narrative interrogates the structures governing success, reputation, and transgression within elite institutions.

The novel centres on Samantha Ross, the youngest woman to make partner at the prestigious Epstein & Littleton law firm. Her professional authority is firmly established, not only within the firm but beyond it, as her reputation for decisive, high-stakes litigation attracts the attention of powerful corporate clients. Samantha’s success, however, comes at a cost to her personal life, which is marked by an unresolved, on-again, off-again relationship with fellow partner Zane.

Samantha’s personal life is further illuminated by her friendship with Becca, who serves as both confidante and counsellor. As a trusted sounding board, Becca offers perspective on Samantha’s professional decisions while also gesturing towards a life shaped by priorities beyond work. Both women are in their thirties, yet their trajectories begin to diverge: Becca increasingly contemplates settling down and starting a family, while Samantha remains unconvinced that such a future aligns with her own sense of purpose. This contrast is presented without judgement, reinforcing the novel’s emphasis on choice rather than prescription and highlighting the differing timelines often imposed on women by social expectation as much as by personal desire.

The professional setting is rendered with control. Legal practice is presented through hierarchy, coded behaviour, and reputational vigilance. The narrative illustrates how such mechanisms function uniformly in theory, yet unevenly in consequence.

Michael Taylor occupies a carefully calibrated position within this story. As Chief Executive Officer of CyPlay, he represents a parallel authority defined by discipline, strategic intelligence, and restraint. He enters Samantha’s orbit not through social proximity but professional necessity, seeking her out after a high-profile verdict establishes her reputation as a formidable litigator. What begins as a strictly professional engagement—rooted in shared competence and mutual respect—gradually acquires a personal charge. In a moment shaped by emotional exhaustion and impaired judgement, Samantha crosses a boundary she has spent much of the narrative resisting. Within the legal framework she navigates, such boundaries carry little tolerance for error. The narrative suggests a persistent imbalance in tolerance: conduct overlooked when enacted by men becomes career-ending when attributed to women.

The supporting cast actively advances the narrative. Characters such as Zane play an integral role in accelerating moments of reckoning. Dialogue remains controlled and purposeful, particularly in professional exchanges where implication drives action more forcefully than exposition.

Structurally, the novel moves with confidence, its pacing reflecting the emotional and professional stakes at play. The prose is measured and precise, favouring clarity over ornamentation and allowing meaning to emerge gradually rather than announcing itself outright.

What makes "207 West End Avenue" compelling is not simply its professional setting, but its attention to the cost of ambition. Readers drawn to stories about capable women navigating high-stakes environments will find a protagonist whose intelligence is never in doubt, yet whose choices remain open to scrutiny. It is a book for readers interested in character-driven narratives that ask difficult questions about success, compromise, and the personal consequences of professional life, particularly within the social and institutional constraints of the 1980s.

My favorite legal thrillers are written by lawyers (or former lawyers) and Randie Berman does not disappoint. 207 West End Avenue is a sharp and smart read, pulling you into a fast-paced high drama with authentic characters that the revolves around what it takes for a woman to succeed in an environment that doesn't naturally give her the benefit of the doubt. A fun, well-written, and thoughtful read. Highly recommend.

I liked this book that I won as a Goodreads giveaway. I liked that it took place during the mid to late 1980s. Sam's character as an attorney was admirable and enjoyable to read. I didn't like that Sam made a committed relationship decision based on a contract rather than actually developing a real relationship with Michael. I wished that the story had followed a more realistic progression in Sam's personal life.
