Claudia Rueda is a Colombian picture book author, New York Times Best Seller illustrator and a 2016 Hans Christian Andersen and Astrid Lindgren award nominee. Her books have been published throughout North America, Europe and Asia and have been translated into more than ten different languages.
„Гладно зайче“ и „Зайче зад борда“ на Клаудия Руеда (изд. Timelines) са две от онези редки книги, които не просто се четат, а се преживяват активно – с ръце, въображение и смях. Това са интерактивни истории, в които малките читатели вече не са само наблюдатели, а главни помощници на Зайчето, готови да му съдействат във всяка нова щура задача. I just don't get the interactive fad in picture books. Read my review if you dare!
Parents and caregivers have been doing this kind of thing for generations. Only they've called it PLAYING.
In this book the pretending strikes me as self-conscious and stylized, with a touch of cornball. Although maybe a two-year old would adore this. Very possible!
For an example of the big interactive experiment: Early on, Bunny is standing in a sailboat. It won't move. There is no wind.
The author instructs:
Maybe you could make some! Would you please BLOW into the sail?
On the next page, readers see results in a big-bellied sail. How gratifying?
MY REACTION, FWIW
* There's playing. Something you can easily do with a young child in your life.
* There's also reading. Where you relax and imagine and open up to what the author has to tell you.
My dislike of so-called interactive books is that they turn reading into playing. Whereas reading can help us to imaginatively play in ways that are far more interesting and creative than, "Maybe you'd like to blow wind in a sail." Followed by "Oh, what a good boy am I. The sail puffs out."
RATING THIS BOOK
Unless I absolutely love or loathe a book, my policy is to rate it in terms of my imagined response of the intended readers.
FIVE STARS, because toddlers could feel very proud of their blowing ability. I only hope the same for these toddlers' eventual READING ability.
Oh goodness, this is just perfect. The illustrations are cute and fun, but what I really love is the interactivity of this book. For storytimes, it's awesome because the kids can join in and help blow the sail or wipe away the ink. It keeps kids engaged while listening to someone else read, which can sometimes be hard to do with preschool age and toddler kids. And I like that a lot of the action words are sight words, which means kids can get more out of this book as they get older. Loved this book!
This interactive picture book has cute illustrations and some fun engagement prompts, but it is much too long for storytime, and most kids would lose interest with it in one-on-one reading unless they happened to be passionate about interactive activities. This would be a much stronger book with more usability if the author had kept it down to half the length.
This series of interactive books about "bunny" is so fun to read aloud. Children participating by helping bunny blow in the sails, rock the boat, swim to look for treasure, etc. I can't WAIT to use them in story time.
Chalk another one up to Claudia Rueda for a great "breaking the fourth wall" interactive picture book. These are incredibly easy to incorporate into our toddler/preschooler storytimes because of how active they are. A sailing theme is always fun for summer!
Another fun interactive picture book about adorable Bunny (Hungry Bunny and Bunny Slopes) by Claudia Rueda. This time readers help Bunny on a boat trip. Engaging illustrations and large text make this an easy book to share.
I like Bunny Slopes better than this one. This one seems a little meandering in comparison. M likes it and enjoys spotting the seal. My husband prefers this one and thinks the bunny is less obnoxious.
This is an interactive picture book. Bunny talks to you as the reader and invites you to join in the fun! For example: blow to make wind for the said, rock back and forth to make waves, pat the fish, and many more. Kids love to participate in a story like this over and over again!
7/19/2022 ~ Interactive & illustrations that invite readers/listeners to feel superior to Bunny. I did struggle with having a group of preK kids all blow together (germs & all that). Also, never enter a closed environment when snorkeling/diving! Love the seal.
As with her other books about bunny, the author created opportunities for the young readers to participate in the action in the book. A nice element for a story time book for young kids.
Grandparents, Christmas is sorted. Buy this darling book to giggle over with your grand-babies. It’s so much fun, and the interactive illustrations are sweet. Buns Away!
