In a world fractured by war, whispers of ancient powers stir beneath the surface.
Mal, a boy born into silence and shadows, is thrust into a journey that will unravel everything he thought he knew—about his past, his family, and the crumbling realm around him. Hunted, beaten, and caged by forces far greater than himself, Mal must navigate a landscape teeming with betrayal, haunted woods, and horrors too twisted to name.
As cities burn and beasts descend from the edges of nightmares, unlikely allies a grieving warrior, twin elf sisters cloaked in secrets, and a forbidden knowledge buried deep in forgotten pages. Each step forward tests the limits of endurance, faith, and sacrifice.
But survival in this world is not enough. Some wounds go deeper than the flesh. Some truths are meant to stay buried. And some suffering… changes everything.
Perfect for fans of The Witcher, The Broken Empire, and The Poppy War, Suffering is a visceral tale of darkness, resilience, and the brutal price of hope.
We follow a teenager through some pretty heavy events. The main character is not an ultra-strong character with hero armor. He is what you would expect from your average 16 year-old. He has doubts, he isn't extremely strong, and he is not very skilled. He is thrown into one terrible situation after another, and endures through them with the thoughts that a normal 16 year-old would.
This story was well-written and engaging. The pace was perfect and I kept wanting to read to see what happened next. The characters are written well with how they interact with each other, and I felt invested with following the development of the various characters.
The story ends with a nice arch-nemesis brooding and planning scene, which I look forward to seeing how it plays out in the next book.
