The Twelfth Night Before Christmas

Rate this book
When she first put on the Santa suit, she never imagined she’d fall in love…

Cheated on, unemployed, and apartmentless, Viola Pearson does the unthinkable: she agrees to pretend to be her brother at his job at Snowspruce Christmas Village Santa. That’s right. She pulls the classic twin switcheroo.

The job, though, offers more problems than Viola anticipated. From beard itch to demanding parents, she also has to contend with her unfairly handsome coworker, Duke, all while hiding the fact that she’s a woman.

Viola has twelve days—twelve days to either find her happy ending or watch her lies come crashing down around her. Either way, it’ll end with a bang.

The Twelfth Night Before Christmas is a sweet, Shakespeare-inspired novella that guarantees both a happily ever after and a merry Christmas.

I had so much fun reading this! It was a quick, lighthearted, festive and hilarious read.
It's a novella inspired by Twelfth Night by Shakespeare, but the only thing I constantly thought about is the movie She's the Man, they were after all inspired by the same thing.. I absolutely love that movie, it's why I requested this, and it gave me a lot of the same feelings.

Viola got cheated on and is now without an apartment and sleeping on her brother's couch, without a job until January and still reeling from the breakup. Sebastian, her brother, suggest they switch places, a twin switcheroo, as he's supposed to be a Santa in a Christmas village.. He's unable to do it, having broken his arm, and Viola could use the money.. So Viola accepts, but meeting the others Santa's, especially the one she can't seem to stop thinking about, might complicate things.. Because Duke might be worth it, but he hates liars and she's lying to him..

I really liked the writing and the vibes. It was funny and messy and vulnerable..
I absolutely loved the setting, who doesn't love a Christmas village, and I loved Olivia, even if she did frustrate me at times. The other Santa's were hilarious, but they absolutely deserved the talking-to Viola gave them. Maria really grew on me, she's terrifyingly awesome.
I hated Mal with a burning passion, that one scene near the end was truly the most perfect scene..

I really loved Viola, she lost so much of herself in a toxic relationship and seeing her finally realise that and fight for herself was everything. The way she was with the kids was absolutely perfect and so adorable. She and Sebastian truly had a special connection and he was, honestly, a great brother. Even if he was a little self-absorbed, he pushed Viola when she desperately needed someone to do exactly that.
Duke was so cute, he listened and saw and appreciated the real Viola. It was a little heartbreaking seeing him so confused, but I loved how he loved the person and how that was the only thing that mattered.

I loved the slowburn, well the slowburn a novella can afford to give, them dancing around each other was so fun to watch. The banter, the sparks, the adorableness.. They were so good together. They were both hurt, so seeing them find happiness was everything.
Also, the Christmas gift he gave her, the best thing ever!

I really liked how the novella was set up as a play in the beginning and the end of every chapter. It was quick paced and utterly delightful.

3.5 stars rounded down

What a whacky, messy, Christmas-y story. I laughed a lot, occasionally wanted to shake the h, and had some “aww” moments. Loved that this was a play on Twelfth Night and had all the holiday shenanigans since half the characters spent most of their time dressed as Santa. It is a novella and I thought it would benefit from a smidge more on the page count. It still has plenty to work with and I had so much fun describing this to friends.

Written in first person, single POV of h. No ow drama, some om drama from the crappy ex, and both mains were experienced. Both the h and H had recently gotten out of toxic relationships (she was cheated on and the H was unknowingly the one someone was cheating with).

Some tropes/themes:
☆ FMC having her world upended
☆ Needing to find her strength
☆ Last minute job as Santa in a Christmas village
☆ Twin switching shenanigans/ FMC playing her male twin
☆ MMC is (confusedly) attracted to the FMC playing her twin and as herself
☆ MMC has sweet, himbo energy, alongside 3 other himbo co-workers
☆ She’s lying to him and he hates liars
☆ Twin brother sneakily supporting his sister
☆ Gorgeous elf friend
☆ Sweet Santa moments
☆ Bastard ex
☆ Grand gesture
☆ Yes they make out in the Santa suit
☆ But it’s a slow burn
☆ Author includes scene notes at beginning and end of chapters as a nod to the play

Viola (h) has hit rock bottom after finding out that her long-term boyfriend was cheating on her. She gave up her dreams to support him and now she’s staying on her twin brother’s couch in his ridiculously messy apartment. He’s broken his arm and convinces Viola in a drunken state to take over his upcoming gig as Santa by pretending to be him. Viola is messy, has low self-esteem thanks to her ex’s negativity, and genuinely needs some magic.

Enter Duke (H) who is sincere and precious and gorgeous to boot. He’s one of her co-worker Santas who is under the impression Viola is a Sebastian. Doesn’t stop him from admiring her eyes or touching her soft skin. Though he is confused and has a hilariously adorable scene where he vaguely talks to Viola about his confusion over his preferences. It’s clear Duke’s just into her, but it’s a complex situation since he doesn’t know she’s both people and he shows interest for Viola as Santa and as herself, which was a bit borderline for me. The reader knows it’s Viola but Duke’s hitting on both twins, his confusion aside.

The Christmas village setting was lovely and atmospheric. The description of the kids waiting in line and how amazing Viola was as Santa were all fantastic. Her struggles to hide that she’s a woman had her jumping through hoops and I couldn’t believe how nobody caught on right away. She was getting hit on by more than just Duke too! Meanwhile she’s torn up over this connection she feels towards Duke while she’s lying to him, knowing that’s going to be a dealbreaker for him.

The village crew were the best. Sebastian (the real one) also hilariously pops in and out. The awful ex is on page, unfortunately, and he wrecks a wonderful thing, of course. He does get set down though in a big, public way. Viola also has to deal with the fall-out though. Sebastian having a heart-to-heart with her and shining a light on their differences and why he worries about her was such a beautiful and wrenching part. Viola needed to be shaken up in order to grow.

I wouldn’t say this has a third act break-up, because they’re not together until the end, after a grand gesture Viola makes. It’s cute and also on point with the holiday theme, but with the angst taking up the majority of the story, their confirmed relationship only being in the epilogue was kind of disappointing. That’s also when the only full steamy scene occurs (with Santa suit in case someone’s into that or firmly against it). I’d say this is HFN just because it’s several months later and they’re happy but still new as a couple without that truly settled feeling since the reader doesn’t see the settled part of their romance exactly.

I had fun reading this and that’s unexpected with the fact that the h was lying to the H, knowing he was going to be hurt, and that happening for so long. It has such a zany tone and found family feeling with the right mix of humor and heart with the sweetness. A little more magic would have pushed this rating up for me. I do think some of my friends would enjoy this, while others would probably dislike Viola hiding herself.

•Duke with Viola reminds me of Zapp Brannigan in the Futurama episode where Leela poses as Lee Lemon to join the army.
•The other himbo Santas are very Jason-from-The-Good-Place-core (obviously, a positive, hilarious).
•I was a Shakespeare nerd child, and this tribute/retelling rekindled that and brought me a lot of joy. I loved the novella's stage play structure.
•Keri Lane's trademark wit and emotional devastation.

This was such a delightful read! I laughed out loud multiple times, and welled up with tears too. The scenes with kids sitting on Santa’s lap were some of the sweetest moments I’ve read all year.

I’m not always one for retellings, but this worked for me. Shakespeare is allowed to be big and extra while saying something meaningful, and that’s the perfect note for a heartfelt holiday romcom.

📚 The Twelfth Night Before Christmas by Keri Lane

✨ Tropes: Mistaken Identity, Found Family, Slow Burn Romance, Twin Sibling Bond, Holiday Hijinks, Small Town, Hurt/Comfort, HEA

Okay, I knew from page one I was going to love this book, but I didn’t expect to fall so hard. Viola is a bit of a mess. She was just cheated on, no job, no place to live and somehow ends up pretending to be her twin brother as Santa in a cozy Christmas village. (Being a twin mom, I was immediately hooked 🤣!) And it’s every bit as hilarious and chaotic as that sounds.

The banter? Perfect. Think early-season Friends energy, like you can hear the dialogue and feel the comedic timing. It made the whole story fly off the pages. And I loved how each chapter opened like a Shakespeare scene, it felt theatrical and playful, a wink to the original Twelfth Night but in a way that didn’t take itself too seriously.

But what really got me was the heart in this story. Viola’s pain never felt glossed over. She’s messy, she’s sad, she’s stuck. And we watch her find her way back, slowly, one awkward Santa moment and unexpected connection at a time. Her bond with her twin, Sebastian, is just so genuine. And the slow burn with Duke? TBH, it gave me butterflies and had me grinning like an idiot.

Found family is one of my absolute favorite tropes, and this book nailed it. Viola goes from heartbreak and isolation to building something sweet, loving, and wonderfully weird. It's like the book gives you permission to be a little lost and reminds you that joy finds you anyway.

Also...the epilogue? Total chef’s kiss. The spice came in hot at the end and was exactly the payoff we were waiting for. Think Christmas in July but spicy 🔥 🥵!

🥰 If you love a cozy Christmas read that gives you the kind of banter that has you laughing out loud, and a arc that leaves you smiling and rooting for that HEA, this book is for you!

I got this as an ARC copy from Netgalley. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read this ahead of the scheduled date.

Set as a Christmas Santa greeter (What is the appropriate term for the mall Santa's?) our FMC is going through a rough break up with the very much a villain Mal. *BOOOOO* *HISS* Mal SUCKKKKKS. The author did a great job really setting up how much I truly despise and hate Mal. It's the ex-trope where she put aside her life so he can pursue his goals. Once he gets there of course he decides well gosh, this just isn't really working. I LOVED how the FMC had a spine and did confront him. She set a boundary and gave a date for him to have to stand on his own two feet. loved that.

Viola is the mall Santa but pretending to be her twin Seb so people think she is a man. The reason that I didn't love the way this trope went along was because Duke (the MMC of this book) sort of had this gay awakening? Also, sidenote, didn't like that he was in love with both the twins even though they were the same person. Like don't be in love with my sibling and me. However, Viola manages to make Olivia think that she was a boy and there was a kiss which made me feel like she's leading someone on even though Viola does try to shut it down. There was a spicy scene with Duke where I feel like he was into the idea of being with a guy (which I also got in the last spicy scene of the book)

I feel like for me, this book didn't work with the whole pretending to be a boy trope. The whole thing came across super juvenile. She just got out of a relationship and is jumping into something else. The way she approaches pretty much every single thing in this book came across as just enh.

I feel like I never got to know more about Duke which made me feel like overall his character was lacking?

It took me 2 chapters before I realized that this is a Christmas "She's The Man" retelling. This was super cute and super funny. Viola pretends to be her brother Sebastian for a Santa gig where she falls for Duke, the sexy Santa, and deals with her tumultuous life putting the pieces back together of herself after her breakup. Sebastian - the real one - had a missed connection with Olivia and of course, she flirts with the fake Sebastian, Viola since she doesn't know he's a she and really just kind. Viola enjoys her Santa gig working with kids and making friends with Duke's crew while Duke questions his sexuality being attracted to Sebastian AND his sister when she is out of costume and runs into him a few times. This was really funny, and they even make some Magic Mike references towards Duke which had be giggling. This is a holiday read that I'd definitely recommend!

I REALLY think the author missed out on a great book blurb, because if I knew this was a "She's The Man" retelling with the same names and everything, I would have picked this up much sooner. I read this in a few hours and loved it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short, cute rom-com! It’s based on Twelfth Night by Shakespeare (if the title didn’t give that away). The humor especially gave me She’s the Man vibes, which makes sense since both are inspired by Twelfth Night. Honestly, every time I see characters named Viola, Sebastian, and Duke, I can’t help but think of that movie—and this novella captures that same kind of fun energy.

For a Christmas novella that’s only about 170 pages, it packs in a lot of charm and festive cheer. I especially loved how the chapters were styled with visual cues, like a play. It was such a clever touch.

Overall, this is a delightful, lighthearted holiday read that’s perfect if you’re looking for something quick and happy to get you in the Christmas spirit.

This 4 star book was my first by Keri Lane and I really enjoyed it. I found myself laughing out loud on many occasions and even shedding a tear or two on others. I loved all the characters but I especially loved the MCs. They were hilarious together. I liked the setting and I could really see the different stations set up in my mind from the author's description. I should also like to thank the author for my ARC of this book via BookSirens. I loved the way the conversations were written especially the banter. This was definitely a different Christmas book but it was a great difference and I look forward to reading more by Keri Lane and will definitely be recommending this one to other readers.

Thanks to @netgalley and @victoryediting for an advanced copy in exchange for a honest review.

I loved the holiday messiness in this one, and the setting was so wintery and cozy. Being a novella i was not disappointed, for the story it was telling, it was the perfect quick read. But would love some spin off books about some of the side characters especially the rest of the Santa's! I enjoyed reading this it was full of heart and alot of found family. And Mal the ex, the author really made me hate this guy, which shows how invested i was in parts of this book. Highly recommend to romance fans, especially readers of Ali Hazelwood and Tessa Bailey.

This was such a fun and enjoyable cozy read! I only wish it could have been longer so we had more time to get to know the characters and to allow their emotions to form more - maybe instead of being set across the twelve nights before Christmas, it could have been a couple of months?

I received an advance review copy of this book for free via BookSirens, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

🌶️🌶️

Viola gets cheated on by Mal, and her brother, Sebastian, has a brilliant idea. She needs money and a distraction, so he offers her his job as Santa Claus at a Christmas village. She takes it and has to pretend to be her brother while wearing fake facial hair and a Santa suit, pulling a twin switch-a-roo. While pretending to be her brother, she realizes she has a crush on a fellow Santa. She has to navigate around her feelings in order to hide who she really is under the suit. Can she do it?

There are a lot of feelings in this book between many different people. It was kind of hard to read about certain situations, because it leads to false sense of hope. However, everyone grows past the hurt and comes together again. There is also curiosity that lingers from Duke as he navigates his feelings as well.

This story showed real emotions and a harsh reality for those who get cheated on, and also for those who sacrifice many things in an unhealthy relationship. I enjoyed reading about Viola’s progress as she realizes that Mal is a terrible person. Keri Lane did an amazing job at expressing how hard these situations are to navigate, and how hard and scary it is to start over.

I’m here for the bickering between the siblings, since I can relate to it with my own sister. It had me laughing and smiling. I was stressing for Viola and her chances of getting caught throughout the entire book, so I was also feeling anxious. However, I thought this was such a good book.

-Second chance at starting life over
-Found family

How I loved this story!

At first, it progressed slowly. I kept waiting to meet Duke, but seeing Viola and Sebastian interact as brother and sister was endearing and genuine. Their banter wasn't forced and it felt like someone with a sibling actually wrote their interactions. I felt so sorry for Viola, and just learning what her ex made her do made my blood boil! What's sad is that this is an accurate representation of a toxic relationship, which shows that there are so many women being manipulated out of their careers for the sake of a man.

Viola was hardworking, outspoken, and not afraid to speak her truth. She know her worth even if it took some time for her to accept that she deserved better than Mal, and boy was Duke SO MUCH more better than Mal! Their chemistry was burning through the pages and I loved how Duke didn't treat her solely as a romantic interest. He was her best friend and also her love interest, and I think that speaks more volume to a relationship than if they just have romantic chemistry.

The idea that Viola would take Sebastian's place as mall Santa was interesting! I liked how Viola interacted so sweetly with the kids, because I know some mall Santa's genuinely just want to get paid. I'm surprised Maria let her work without the paperwork for so long. I loved all the side characters - Valentine was my favorite! He was just so blunt and funny and, just like Duke, got along well with everyone.

I noticed at times, Duke's character could be more dense than he's portrayed overall, so that made me a little confused. When he first met Viola, I thought he would have some kind of suspicion that she was doing Sebastian's job since he commented on her eyes so many times (or rather, Sebastian's eyes) so I was shocked when the reveal came as a surprise to him as well.

One thing I particularly enjoyed was Duke's integration into his sexuality. I knew that there would be some kind of revelation as Duke began feeling more deeply for 'Sebastian' (really Viola), and the bread allegory that was used was done extremely well! I loved that Duke's sexuality wasn't drawn into a massive, overwhelming plot point. Rather, it was simply a new part of him that he'd discovered. It didn't change who Duke was as a person, rather, it was introduced in the story as a natural part of one's identity.

My favorite character has to be Olivia. At first, I was confused about how I would feel for her because she is described by Viola as seeming sweet but really vapid. However, this is near instantly disputed when Olivia and Viola bond after the Santa meet and greet, so I don't see the point of calling Olivia vapid. She was resentful, sure, but nowhere did she SHOW that she was vapid, and I think that's an important distinction to make as it took me a while to amalgamate the Olivia we were told as a fact, and the Olivia that was presented. I think it would have been better for Viola to describe her as "reserved" or "prudent". Just like with Duke, I loved how Olivia's identity was also portrayed!

You have to love to hate Mal in the story. As Viola's ex, he's an indisputable, unredeemable villain, and I think that worked well for the concept of this story. As cliche as it is to have an ex ruin your life before Christmas, I think it was woven well into Viola's character growth and identity, and it wasn't just used as a plot device.

I also HAVE to talk about that Duke/Viola (technically Sebastian) scene because it came out of nowhere and boy was it HOT. I don't think I can really compare it to the end scene with Duke and Viola, but it's the first, and objectively, the hottest scene! It's sort of a soft launch of Duke's acceptance of his sexuality, but also culminates to the climax of Viola's feelings and deception for Duke. The way Duke wanted to do everything right and make Viola/Sebastian feel good was so sweet because he thought it'd be his first time so he wanted everything to be perfect!

I think this story was supposed to be written in a similar format as Shakespeare's THE TWELFTH NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, but I don't think having the scenes at the top did anything to the story. There was no addition because the story was written in typical novel format, with dialogue and action, so I don't think there was a need to have the scene endings and cuts.

Overall, I will be adding this book to my bookshelf someday. It was a quick but sweet, hot, and powerful read! Sometimes I cringed when I realized that Duke thought he was making out with Sebastian (I mean, as a sister, can you really look at your brother the same way when a guy you like is moaning your brother's name while kissing you?) but it was a sweet rom-com that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a holiday treat!

The premise alone signals Lane’s commitment to embracing absurdity: a woman impersonating her twin brother as a shopping mall Santa is exactly the kind of setup that could easily collapse under its own weight. Instead, Lane uses this outlandish situation as foundation for exploring genuine themes of identity, family bonds, and the courage required to start over. The author never lets readers forget how preposterous the circumstances are, but she also never mocks her protagonist for finding herself in them.

Lane’s greatest achievement is creating dialogue that sparkles with genuine wit. The conversations between characters feel spontaneous and lived-in, capturing the rhythm of real friendship and attraction without sacrificing comedic timing. This isn’t joke-driven humor but character-based comedy that emerges naturally from personality clashes and awkward situations. The banter serves dual purpose—entertainment and character revelation—making each exchange meaningful beyond its immediate comedic value.

The Shakespearean framework adds delightful theatrical flair without becoming pretentious. Lane clearly loves the source material but wears that affection lightly, using the literary connection to enhance rather than overshadow her own storytelling. The chapter structure creates playful anticipation while giving the entire narrative a sense of performance that suits the holiday setting perfectly.

What distinguishes this from typical holiday romance is Lane’s refusal to gloss over genuine pain. The protagonist’s heartbreak and displacement feel real despite the comedic circumstances, creating emotional stakes that justify the reader’s investment. The author understands that the best romantic comedies allow characters to be genuinely vulnerable beneath their humorous situations.

The twin relationship deserves particular praise for its authenticity. Rather than using the sibling connection as mere plot device, Lane explores the specific dynamics of twin bonds—the wordless communication, the protective instincts, the way twins can both enable and challenge each other. This relationship provides emotional anchor that keeps the story grounded even during its most outrageous moments.

The romantic development unfolds with impressive patience, allowing attraction to build through shared experiences rather than instant chemistry. Lane understands that the most satisfying romantic payoffs require investment of time and genuine compatibility, not just physical attraction. The slow burn feels earned rather than artificially extended.

The found family elements emerge organically from the Christmas village setting, creating a community that feels welcoming rather than forced. Lane populates her story with supporting characters who have their own motivations and personalities, making the workplace feel like a real environment rather than mere backdrop for romantic developments.

The holiday atmosphere never becomes overwhelming or saccharine. Lane captures the particular magic of Christmas employment—the combination of festive chaos and temporary camaraderie that makes seasonal work both exhausting and oddly meaningful. The setting serves the story without dominating it.

For readers who like:
- Romantic comedies
- Holiday settings
- Slow-burn romance

Final Verdict
The Twelfth Night Before Christmas succeeds by balancing absurdity with authenticity, creating a romantic comedy that’s both laugh-out-loud funny and genuinely touching. Lane has crafted something that honors both its Shakespearean inspiration and its contemporary holiday romance genre while feeling entirely fresh. This is comfort reading at its finest—smart, warm, and utterly satisfying.

No one's life has ever become worse by becoming Santa.

I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I didn't think that reading a Christmas novella in august would put me in a jolly spirit... but this one sure did! Funny, lighthearted, quick-paced, this story made me smile and laugh, while also touching my heart.

This shakespearean retelling involved one very lost, hearthbroken and well, messy and broke Viola, who accepts a little switcheroo with her twin brother Sebastian. She must disguise herself in none other than Santa, in the Snowspruce Christmas village, to gain a little money, save her brother's job, and well, heal herself somehow. Why not! The little twist? She's not the only Santa working... oh oh oh no! Her now 4 co-santas includes the very hot, very cuddly and charming Duke.

And oh how Keri Lane was able to make me love Viola almost instantly, and hate her ex ever faster! Vi is messy, in need of serious healing and self-love, and needs to gain that confidence to get her life back, she who gave everything away for someone who didn't deserve an inch of her. I wanted to root for her after only a few pages, and she was worth it! Vi wasn't the sad little girl who needs a guy to help her figure herself out, even if she had plenty of santa's willing to do that. No, she got up on her own, and I couldn't help but shout "That's my girl!".

I loved Viola's relationships with Duke and Olivia. Duke's openness and clear attraction for Seb(Viola) was so heartwarming and comfy, it made me smile everytime. The tension between them was palpable, and I was all for the Duke's moments! We all need some Duke in our lives, making us believe we are amazing and important. The bagels and bread metaphor truly made me chuckle, because even if Viola didn't think it was a sexy metaphor, I did think it was! And the santa's interactions with each others were sometimes a little cliché, always chaotic, but very enjoyable. I wanted more of them!!!

For a short story, Keri Lane was able to develop strong bonds and funny sharp banter, while also keeping the importance of Santa's mission : listenning to the kids (it's the teacher in me!) and keeping the Christmas spirit.

For my entire read, I couldn't help but think about one of my favorite teen movies, She's the man and well, I loved this movie, and I loved this novella.

Will be reading more of this author for sure!
PS... don't miss the epilogue 😉🥵🔥

I really enjoyed this book as a quick, light-hearted holiday romance - until the last chapter. But we will get to that later.

The overall concept of the novella was fun & quirky - a recently dumped Viola, staying with her fly by the seat of his pants twin brother, who takes on his seasonal job as a Santa in a Christmas village because she needs a way to re-start after her break-up. On her first day of work, Viola meets all of the other Santas and immediately "connects" with Duke. As the following days unfold, Viola becomes smitten with Duke, Duke becomes smitten with Viloa but as her brother, a Christmas elf thinks she is falling hard for Viola, and all of the predictable chaos ensues.

I loved Viola as a character, and I think that her backstory and overall character development was great. The cast of characters as a whole was entertaining and loveable. My two issues with the story were 1) Viola and Duke "fell in love" after a couple of quick conversations and some staring at each other longingly across the holiday village. There was no real substance behind their relationship. Lust? Sure. Love? Far-fetched. My other issue was the last chapter of the book. Without giving anything away, it was focused on Viola and Duke's physical relationship, and it felt nothing but gratuitous. I'm all for spice in my books but when it's warranted. To me, it didn't feel needed and it felt like an afterthought just to through some spice in the book.

That aside, it was a fun & quick holiday read and was overall very enjoyable.

Thoughts:
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Definitely an interesting twist on a Christmas romance. Viola and Duke are such big and well thought through characters who work so well together that by the end you really end up rooting for it to work. I did feel for Duke at a few points as the situation with the twins left him questioning himself and I found myself hoping Viola would trust him at those points but the way it actually came out was much more dramatic which naturally leads to a much more dramatic and heartwarming ending. It took me a while to figure out who Olivia could be but at the first proper hint I figured it so I was also hoping for them to figure it out before the end and at one point checked the pages to see if they had enough pages for it. I also liked the way in which Viola’s toxic relationship was handled as it highlighted the toxic behaviours which may help some readers feel less alone and maybe even escape like Viola finally did themselves.

Favourite Quote:
“Christmas cheer, as it turns out, isn't just a concept, it's a mutable force that swells with the excitement of every child who comes to sit on my lap and with every parent whose eyes well up with tears as the camera clicks. By lunchtime, Christmas cheer permeates the village so much that I could almost reach out and grab it.”

4 ⭐️ (rounded up)

This novella is a delightful blend of festive cheer, romantic comedy, and heated attraction that kept me smiling the whole way through. The Shakespeare-inspired twist of Viola taking her twin brother’s place as a mall Santa is charming and creative, and I loved how that setup leads to both tender and laugh-out-loud moments. If you’re looking for a holiday romance that’s sweet, witty, and spicy with a cozy Christmas village vibe, this one hits the mark beautifully.

What worked best for me were the characters and their interactions. Viola is relatable and spirited, Duke is fun and attentive, and the chemistry between them felt genuine, making the slow burn/dual identity plot a joy to watch unfold. It’s also refreshing to see growth from Viola as she moves past a toxic relationship into something healthier and more honest. The pacing is great also and the spice is spicing with this one. There wasn't any graphic spice in the main story itself, but the epilogue is definitely spicy so I'd still rate it a 2🌶️ on my spice scale.

Overall, The Twelfth Night Before Christmas is a festive romantic escape that’s perfect for the reader who wants humor, heart, and a holiday happily-ever-after with a twist of Shakespearean disguise and plenty of sparks. Thank you so much to BookSirens and the author Keri Lane for the opportunity to read this ARC of The Twelfth Night Before Christmas!

Wow. What a fantastic book.
The Twelfth Night Before Christmas is one of the best romance novels I've read in a very long time.
I was drawn in immediately, I just couldn't put it down. I devoured it in one sitting.
It was full of romance, friendship, humour, emotion, and Christmas spirit.

It was so good that I really didn't want it to end. I loved everything about it, from Viola taking on Sebastian's identity to play Santa, to the friendships she built with Olivia, Duke, Captain, Valentine, and Curio, the heartwarming Santa sessions with the kids, and most of all her tension and chemistry with Duke.

This is the first book I've read from Keri Lane, but it definitely won't be the last. I'll be looking up all her previous novels after this.
I think I might have found a new favourite romance author.

I can't recommend highly enough.

5 stars from me ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Although I'd give it more if I could.

Especially for fans of Giovanna Fletcher, Abby Jimenez, Ali Hazelwood, and Tessa Bailey.

Thanks to Netgalley, Victory Editing, and Keri Lane for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Did I know I needed a holiday themed twelfth night retelling? Nope. But I am so glad it's here.

This is a sweet quick holiday read you should be adding to your Christmas TBR. The setting and side characters make for a vivid story.

I loved the elements of a "play" added throughout the book and it gave depth to the many characters in the story. It was also very fun to keep the element of "so-and-so enters" or "they exit the scene"... maybe that's just the former theater kid in me talking, but it had me smiling. Keri always writes with such wit and humor. The banter and internal dialogue are full of funny quips and one-liners.

There's always spicy and sweet elements in Keri's books of course, but she also writes about familial and platonic relationships so well. Seb and Viola's connection in the story is so nurturing and supportive.

Give me all the HEAs and extra spicy epilogues!

Another banger from, Keri Lane!

I received this as an ARC and am writing this voluntarily.

Well I shall be honest about this one, it isn't my normal read and it isn't my normal cup of tea. Even though I struggled to get really into this book I really did enjoy it believe it or not.

The story line was great, and let's be honest when it comes to Christmas that is where you get me, a good Christmas story is always a love of mine! So even though it was hard for me to read, I really did enjoy this book! That's only because it's a change from normal reads that I am use to.

The characters made you fall in love with them, it was well written and you could imagine the scenes playing as if your watching a movie about the book.

It's a twist to the story from Shakespeare (I never did read this at school I'll admit) but it was a sweet, loving story. But yes I really did enjoy this Novella and can't wait to see where else the author goes with it. As I would read another book of hers again, and that is the honest truth.

Thank you so much for this opportunity.

This is a festive Shakespeare-inspired romance. The heroine seeks a fresh start and unexpectedly finds herself tangled in family obligations and romantic possibilities as the season unfolds.
Lane’s writing is warm, cozy, and suffused with holiday charm. Her heroine is likable and resilient; the romantic tension is gentle but meaningful. The pacing is comfortable, allowing the Christmas setting and small moments to breathe.
A sweet seasonal comfort read that I was able to read thanks to BookSirens: not overly dramatic, but it delivers gentle romance, hope, and holiday spirit.

I loved reading a book set during a winter Christmas, since it's spring-summer in my country and the temperatures are very different. I know there are still two months to go, but it was a very nice book and I could feel the festive spirit as if I were there.

I received a digital ARC of this book. This is my first time reading this author, but it won’t be the last. This story is written like a play with acts and stage notes. At first I didn’t know if I liked that, but it allowed some behind the scenes things, and allowed the story to jump from day to day a little easier. Sebastian and Viola are twins. Sebastian agreed to play Santa but now has a broken arm. So they do the twin switch. How hard can it be, they’ve done it before? But what Viola doesn’t expect is the other Santas to be hot, young, single actors. You will enjoy this roller coaster as Viola tries to hide the fact that she’s Viola and not Sebastian, while also trying to not fall for the other Santas! I read this in one day. I kinda hope this is turned into a series with these characters.

3.75 stars?

This is very much Twelfth-Night-themed Christmas. And there's a nod to the movie She's All That as well. This makes it pretty predictable, of course, and we don't really get to know many of the characters that well. We also see Viola leap directly into something new after getting out of a long (multi-year) relationship.... Everything feels a little young for someone who has supported her partner through med school (i.e. she's not a teen or in her early 20s). It felt especially uncomfortable as Duke was questioning his own sexuality because of her deception.

Still, if you can flow with the world of the book (or you love Twelfth Night retellings), you'll enjoy it!

Christmas-wise, it's all Santa-centric, with some ornament gifting thrown in. Pretty good for getting into the spirit of the season! 5/5 stars on that front!

Viola is currently going through one of the hardest moments in her life. Ever worked so hard, you look back and question where did all of that work get me? Viola twin brother Sebastian ends up getting injured, he needs someone to take over her position at work. Who’s better to pick other than his twin sister.. no one will notice :) There seems to be these few workers who find (Sebastian) attractive.

I literally had so much fun reading this book, I had so many giggles and kept turning next page to next page. This writing style was so interesting. The timing in each paragraph was perfect! Thank you for putting out this funny Christmas story.

Thank you NetGalley & Keri Lane for the opportunity to read this Arc!
