Berry Malone’s life was currently ranking a D minus. Divorced, destitute and desperate. Returning home to the Southern Sanctuary to take on the role of local magistrate sounds like the perfect solution to her problems. A place to heal and recover. Regain her self-confidence as a single, empowered – sworn off men for life – woman. Unfortunately, her interfering extended magical family, along with the local devious cats, have other plans for her. Plans that include shredding every article of clothing she owns and throwing her into the company of the new Chief of Police as often as possible. A man too irritating for words, with all his heated looks, intentional looming and flirtatious comments. So what if the man sends her hormones into a tizzy, Berry is determined not to be led astray by her untrustworthy instincts or magic ever again. Ramsey Hughes is desperate to be declared mentally fit enough to return to his job as an undercover cop. If that means temporarily filling in as the Southern Sanctuary Chief of Police, so be it. Except the place is weird, and the inhabitants, even stranger. Then he runs across Berry Malone… naked, vulnerable and spitting mad. Damn, he loves to see her eyes spark with fire. Although she seems to be under the misapprehension that he’s some sort of smooth talking, playboy flirt. With bullets flying and danger stalking them, the two must unite to survive. As they grow closer, Berry remains wary, resolved to keep Hotshot Hughes at arm’s length. She’s too smart to fall for another lying, no-good - can’t be trusted - man. All Ramsey knows is that he wants Berry Malone in his life and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her there, even if that means taking a leap of faith and believing that magic is real. And if that doesn’t work, then he’ll poke, prod and bedevil a beauty, until Berry Malone is willing to commit herself to him heart and soul.
An optimist, yet overly sarcastic. Big on bringing the laughs and the heat to her paranormal romance and cosy mystery series. A huge fan of snark, with a side order of bickering and a double heaping of banter. Delivering to the page sweet alpha males and their more than a match female counterparts. Before wrapping it all up in a hugely satisfying HEA each and every time.
Living in Melbourne, Australia, with her blue tongue lizard, that pokes it head out from under the porch twice a year. When not writing, can generally be found reading.

The greatest heroes in this book were three cats-from-hell. They were so evil that even the biggest badass magical guys in this world were terrified of them. Who doesn't love evil cats? They are the only kind of cats I like because they are acting like their true selves. Never believe a cat who acts sweet. They are just lulling you into a false sense of security. They will totally eat you when you are dead.
He only plays ragtime music. Pure evil. I approve.
The hero in this story is also awesome. He's the new sheriff of the Southern Sanctuary - which is the place where all of the magical people live - and he's human. Everyone is tiptoeing around him trying to act all normal and shit, but he's aware that something is strange in his new town. He and the female have a meet-cute where she is naked and he thinks she's a burglar.
I'm sure the cops see way more naked than they want to.
As I said, the hero is more than great, and she's a fun character.... at first. The thing is that she goes on way too long with pushing him away. Also, he keeps trying to tell her something important and she interrupts him every time. That was annoying.
Still, a lot of fun. I really like the whole world that is building in this series.
Berry Malone’s life has hit a big rough patch since marring a man she didn't really love, but he was smooth in the manner he tricked her into it, and now she's paying the price. Luckily her hometown and family welcome her back with open arms. She has the role of local magistrate to keep her busy, what she does expect is her reaction to the new Chief of Police Ramsey Hughes, they seem to continuously cross paths and she struggles to ignore the attraction she feels. When danger comes calling, the town may be ready to ensure nothing bad happens, but Ramsey is determined to keep the delectable Berry safe and very, very close.
Berry spends a fair bit of time pushing Ramsey away, luckily it didn't get to the stage where it was annoying for me.
This is officially my favorite book of the series so far, and my favorite book of the year.....I know the year just started but I have a feeling it will be a long time before I enjoy a book this much again. I laughed, and fell madly in love with Ramsey, completely and utterly gone on him, big hearted scary guy what’s not to love? But it was Berry that really took my breath away, she’s perfect, wonderful and I adore her. I’m trying desperately to pace myself through this series but it’s so hard not to devour them like a box of chocolates after a bad day.
I am completely addicted to this series/world. Loved the feisty h in this book, after a bad marriage she's determined to stay single and always speak her mind, no matter who that upsets. The H is solid, confident and knows from the moment they meet that the h is the girl for him, snarls, bossiness and all. Love how these two meet and all their subsequent adventures - thanks to all the interfering family match makers. Didn't think the author could top the invisible sheep but the cats in this novel were a hoot - loved how everyone was afraid of them. Wonderful secondary characters as always, great to see glimpses of people we've already met plus a heap of new faces. Loved that this book was set entirely in the Southern Sanctuary and gave the reader a view of the place from the H's perspective as a new resident of the region. Kudos to the author for the slow world building over the series. Can't wait for Book 6 - but just who will be the H & h - too many characters/teases to count?
Since no one left any negative reviews for this book, I’ll take pleasure in being the first one. I feel it needs a view for others to decide if they want to engage in reading this book.
One of my biggest pet peeves in a book is were you have a TSTL female lead. Not only has she been shot at and her car set on fire, she believes she can still go to parties (one of her cousin’s) and somehow be safe. This Berry, is one of the most annoying characters I ever read. I agree with another reviewer who declared her pushing Ramsey away was exhausting. Not to mention that there is zero chemistry with these two characters. That, and her constant avoidance of everything she doesn’t want to deal with. In other words, for a supposed judge, which was never really explained well or believed, she is very much immature and stubbornly irritating.
The story is boring, drawn out, and a complete waste of time. Not to mention that for a popular writer, I’d expect her footing the bill for an editor by now. All of her books have some form of editing/grammar/spelling error that even being from Australia cannot excuse the the laziness of it. The annoying thing about the last book was her 18 “Whiskey Eyes” she used throughout it, also managed to find it’s way into this book. Should I have been surprised? Not really. Which makes me wonder if it wasn’t intensionally designed that way. Any half decent editor would have put a stop to it. But I can’t tell if Cousins was trying to be funny with it or not. For the sake of argument, it wasn’t.
I liked the first few books, aside from some minor issues, but this is the worst of the series by far. I might give the next book a try, but I will be borrowing it from the library so I don’t feel robbed I purchased a book with little substance.
*Update 01-25-21 *
Since this series is self published, there are no copies in the local library. Unfortunate because Janet Mullany’s Improper Relations was also self published but I was able to get it through my library.
Lastly, Cousin seems to have a system/outline of how these books are created and put together. It’s a pattern that is constant, systematic, obvious, and reads like an instruction manual. I hope her books deviate from that outline because there is the threat of being predictable. It’s similar to how Laurann Dohner’s New Species seems to all follow the same outline as the one before it. Same character design female lead, same behavioral grunting, “Here me roar!” alpha brutish male counter parts, and very little deviation from the setting and plot twist (love you Dohner... but someone needs to say it). That gets really tiring and mundane no matter how the content and settings might differ. Especially when you start hitting the double digits of books in a series.
Overall, the lead character Barry is an unlikeable character in my opinion and makes this a difficult story to wade through.
So much fun! From the snappy, great meet-cute - our h is naked and trapped, our H is there to rescue her, or maybe arrest her - to the last page. What a great world/set-up, populated by wonderful characters, special mention must go to the cats in this book, who are obviously working on behalf of the matchmaker. Our h, Berry, was independent, smart and sworn off men. Our H, Ramsey, is solid, dependable, with a sly sense of humor and determined to get under Berry's skin. There is tension, thanks to the stalker gunning for our central couple, but the real focus of this book is the romance. It was sweet and it was way hot - at the same time. There was lots of laughs, many of them referencing things/people from earlier books in the series(like the bridesmaid dress), so I recommend you read them in order to join the in-crowd. We also had new and recurring characters pop-up - love the original bridesmaids chatting, so funny.
The creativity and sheer wit of Cousins is apparent in every page, every character. Love this book, and am loving this series.
Couldn't put this down. It's light, it's great fun. But I was also captivated by the developing relationship between Ramsey and Berry. Their meet-cute was one of the best & funniest I've ever read. The cats! Sheer brilliance. Love their work on behalf of the matchmaker. And the Great-Great-Aunts deserve a special mention. Jane Cousins brings this magical community alive with all her characters and creative little touches that sweep you up and don't let you go until you are sighing over the HEA.
The bridesmaid dresses are right up there with dust bunnies when it comes to the cool factor.
Both hot and sweet this romance just swept me up. Ramsey was just gorgeous. All things tenacious when it comes to knowing Berry is the woman for him and pursuing her no matter what she throws in his path. And she doesn't necessarily make it easy on him, with baggage from her previous marriage and a fierce determination to remain single. But fate, and the tricky family match maker, who has enlisted several kooky family members and some meddling cats all make sure our lovebirds finally get together There was a load of witty dialogue, action, danger/bad guys and lots and lots of fun. Book 5 in the series really focuses on the southern sanctuary itself, we get to find out more about magic, the eccentric family and how their world works - but no info dumps, it all just flows. Loved the wacky court cases. Adore the family. And just fell in love with this couple. From one of the funniest meet cutes I've come across in ages to the wonderful HEA.
Berry's constant pushing away even when the book was almost done was exhausting to read. I wanted to give this 4 stars for Ramsey and the cats but Berry was really annoying
Possibly the best meet-cute I've read in ages. And whilst I'm not particularly a cat person - the three magical matchmaker assist cats in this book were hilarious and so much fun. Ramsey, our scary, gorgeous H, who is tricked into taking the Sheriff's role for a few months, was great. Solid, smart, funny and clearly from first meet, kind of hooked on Berry. Except he has some secrets and he's very suspicious that something is going on in this very weird Southern Sanctuary. Berry is rightfully snappy and grumpy. Failed marriage. No money. A mother-in-law to support. And running home to take up the role of judge is kind of disheartening. The Southern Sanctuary and all the eccentric characters and creatures take centre stage in this book. The interfering Great-Great-Aunts, the cats, there's even a hilarious appearance by the sentient bridesmaid dress Berry wore from book 1. There's a menacing evil stalking Berry - so she and Ramsey are constantly thrown together. We catch glimpses of fave characters from earlier books. And of course we have a hot/sweet romance - with a huge side order of laugh out loud dialogue and set ups. This one was a sweetie.
What a clever imaginative world Jane Cousins has created. And in book 5 we get to find out more about it through the eyes of the new Sheriff, hot alpha male - Ramsey as he locks on to the h, Berry, a sassy, smart, capable woman. Who has been hurt and doesn't trust easily. Loved watching the main duo butt heads. Both stubborn but irresistibly attracted to one another. Plus the author added more great secondary characters. The Great-Great-Aunts and their fabulous interfering cats. Lots of action, romance and a heap of laughs. How clever the author is to add little in-jokes from previous books such as the bridesmaid dresses. Am a huge fan of this author. Another winner that had me laughing out loud and revelling in the HEA. Book 6 - here I come.
OMG, loved it!!! Book 5 in the series brings the funny and the sizzling hot/sweet romance factor that I have come to expect from this author. Couldn't agree more with another reviewer - JC is the Australian version of Shelley Laurenston.
Magic. Matchmaker (who enlists some interfering cats to help this time), Police Chief vs Local Judge, tons of eccentric relatives and lovely friends. Sentient bridesmaid dress.
This one is set purely in the Southern Sanctuary - it was a treat to find out more about the towns, people and their magical culture and how they keep their secrets from he mundane world. When new police chief Ramsey arrives he isn't expecting to find love or magic. But he discovers both. Adored the meet cute for this couple. I was gasping for air I was laughing so much. Berry - back in the sanctuary after a bad marriage and destitute - takes on the role of local magistrate, so much fun reading about her dealing with her mad, extended family. These two have a zingy flirt-fest going on that kept me smiling all the way through. Loved the cats and how afraid everyone was of them and their tricky ways. There was action. A couple of bad guys to defeat. And Ramsey has to convince Berry to give love another go.
Smart, funny and wonderfully creative. Loved not just the MC's but all the supporting cast, who really upped the fun factor. A wonderful, satisfying HEA wrapped up this treat of a book. LOVED.
Am falling in love with this world a little more with every instalment. New guy, Ramsey, is all things gruff, yet steadfast and dedicated. Adored his meet cute with Berry. And yes, those dastardly 'matchmaking' cats are a hoot. Fun interactions follow since he's the local chief of police and she's the local magistrate. And loved those 'family' court cases. The eccentric extended family are really proving amusing with all their little quirks and foibles. Fave characters pop up again to visit (Feel like this town is full of people I want to be best friends with). And we get a hot sizzling romance b/w the two leads. A great, fun story.
What I enjoyed: * The cats. They created havoc and everyone is rightly scared of them. I can't believe they managed to lock Berry outside while naked. I'm hoping to see more of them in later books. * Ramsey is great. He hasn't had much of a life until now, so it is nice to see him fitting in. * Berry is also great, although maybe a bit too proud (she should have asked her family for some help). * The townspeople are great as always.
In this book we learn more about Southern Sanctuary and its residents, which was really nice. Whereas the other books happened at the periphery of the town and we only learned bits and pieces, this is set in the town with the chief of police and the magistrate as the main characters. It’s kind of like Stars Hollow with magic and beaches. It’s a fun story with a divorced heroine who has sworn off men. Obviously that doesn’t last, but it’s a fun, light read
The heroine is too resistant and the hero is too eager. The heroine’s desire to not be with another man and her unwillingness to LISTEN to a damn thing Ramsey says is beyond annoying. I kind of hated her.
I am completely hooked on this series! This can be read as a stand alone, but it is way more fun when books are read in order. It doesn't take long for the hero to steal this reader's heart! His thoughts and feelings as his life goes every which way, but the way he planned it to, makes for entertaining reading. The heroine is spunky and trying to keep up with all that is going on in her life. The secondary characters keep the story moving along, but my favorites are the three cats that seem to keep tormenting Berry! If you love cats, you will love what they get up to. If you hate cats, strangely enough, you will probably enjoy them too! This story is full of humor, action, mystery/suspense, paranormal abilities, and steamy romance. Another reviewer mentioned typos, compared to other books, I didn't really notice that many. Most of the so called typos, were probably just the difference between British English and American English.
I read books 5-9 of this series back-to-back in roughly 5 days. They all run together in my head now. They were all about the same - light, funny romance with action mixed in in good ways. All of them have their first sex scenes at approximately the 60% mark, per Kindle. The characters all come to the same conclusions, reversing their opinions about staying single and carefree over the course of a few pages. Formula? Yes. But it's still good, and the characters are very endearing. Definitely worth reading.
