The newest *Dragon Masters* book absolutely earned 5 stars from my kids 🐉📚 We’ve listened to the entire series together in the car with my 7, 5, and 3 year olds, and they are completely obsessed. Every single time we get in the car, someone asks if we can listen to “the dragon book” again 😂🎧
When this book ended, my daughter literally screamed, “IT’S OVER?! But what’s her name?!” which pretty much sums up how invested they were in the story and characters 😅 They were genuinely sad it was over, and we are definitely already looking forward to the next book in the series!
As a parent, I’ve loved this series too. The books are fun, age-appropriate, exciting, and engaging enough to hold the attention of multiple kids with different ages and interests. I also appreciate how much the series encourages imagination, adventure, teamwork, and vocabulary building without ever feeling too difficult or too heavy for younger readers.
This has been one of our favorite family audiobook series and I highly recommend it for younger readers and families looking for something fun to enjoy together 🐲💚

Defending the Swamp Dragon by Tracey West is a lively Dragon Masters adventure about courage, misunderstanding, and the importance of seeing beyond appearances. In order to not count all 31 books in my 2026 goodreads count, I am going to put my review for all of them here. Spoilers for books 1-31 below if you haven’t read them.
Overall this is a fantastic series for my 2nd grader. There are certainly some plot holes but the characters are kind-hearted with a fairly obvious line between “good” and “evil”. Some books conclude their own plot line, others span 3-5 books for one arc.
Plot hole: In the beginning, dragons are so rare they are hidden but as the series progress there are dragons everywhere. Each book adds a new dragon type
Plot hole: We still don’t know why 8 year olds are dragon masters. Eko grew into an adult and is still a dragon master.
Plot hole: Why do dragon masters get to name their dragons. Don’t they already have names. Many of them in the later books do already have names.
Plot hole: Why do dragons need masters? Book 21 Bloom of the Flower Dragon shows a whole field with hundreds of Flower Dragons. They do not all have or need masters.
Books 1-4: Intro books learning about the 4 starting dragon masters (Drake, Rori, Ana and Bo) and their dragons (Earth, Fire, Sun and Water)
Books 5-10: Pretty independent story lines meeting new dragons
5: Poison dragon was controlled by Maldred but gets set free and gets a dragon master
6-7: Moon dragon is needed to enter a pyramid to find out why the dragon stones are loosing their power. Power was low because a Lightning dragon was hatching
8: Thunder
9: Ice Dragon and an Ice Giant a town needs rescuing from
10: Rainbow
Books 11-13: 3 book arc where Maldred is back and they need to defeat Maldred: Silver, Gold, Earthquake
Book 14: Spring Dragon heals the earthquake
Book 15: Before getting captured, Maldred captured Eko in a wall. In book 15 they free Eko and dozens of other wizards both good and evil using a Time Dragon
Book 16: Capturing one freed evil wizard using a Sound Dragon
Books 17-20: Battling and defeating Astrid: Stone, Lava, Sea, Wind.
Book 21: Very random book with hundreds of little flower dragons, a werewolf, a sprite, freaky bunny abominations…does not seem to fit with the rest of the series.
Book 22: One plot book about baby Invisible Dragons who lost their parents
Book 23-25: Silver, Gold and Poison dragons return to help defeat a Shadow Dragon who has been cursed
Book 26-30: Crystal, Ghost, Wizard, Dream, Chaos, a 5 book arc about Zoltan trying to free Maldred and become the most powerful wizards in the world. More depth as we realize Zoltan is not inherently evil but rather grieving.
Book 31: One book arc about a Swamp Dragon, potentially a longer arc as there is mention of a green haired Wizard being at fault.

An excellent addition to the Dragon Masters series! This one goes back to the classics- Drake and a familiar friend discover a new dragon master, and adventure ensues. The swamp dragon was original (an impressive feat after 30 previous dragons!) and her dragon master was likable. The setting was cool, and I loved the introduction of a new wizard. This even hints at a new story arc that is coming for Drake and his friends and possibly a new dark wizard to defeat. Very exciting!

4.5 stars. Such a solid series! My 8yo still keeps up with new releases in this staple illustrated chapter book featuring Drake, his fellow Dragon Masters, and their diverse dragons with different powers. In this installment the swamp dragon is mistaken for a monster when, in fact, another evil force is at play. Everyone must work together to restore peace.

Unfortunately I am lost as to what the plot is anymore.

I love a stand alone Dragon Masters Adventure!
It feels like it's been a minute since we've had one of these, but it was absolutely so fun to return to the friends we made in Waking the Rainbow Dragon and go on another single story adventure. This one was extremely fun. I loved the new dragon master, hanging with old friends, and yeah, this series is great.
I honestly can't believe we're still reading these, but my kids continue to ADORE them so thanks for keeping us in many wonderful stories Tracy West!
