This is a great sci fi book, it start with the Earth finally having the technology to leave and to travel through the galaxy. Let me introduce you to Nicole Reynolds the first woman selected to lead the search crew to find a new wold to start the Earths interstellar colony. As they travel towards to their destination, she has to work through a few challenges that are far greater then she ever thought were possible and when they finally get established and find an extremely rare resource that will put her life and the life of everyone, to establish the colony on the alien planet.
The author takes us on a voyage of adventure and self discovery in this book. His characters are well written and you can identify with the lead character , Nicole Reynolds . She is a strong female character that does the right and defends the humans to the interstellar colony. Even her life. She is the kind of character that you love to read about
The author takes us on a roller coaster ride. You are put in the front of the rocket ship and blasted out there with the characters. You can feel their pain as you read. You want them to do the right thing and keep the mission going . You will yell at you kindle , yes I admit it I did have a few OMG moments reading it . You are blown away at the writing style and the way the author lets us feel what is going on with all the characters. This book kept me reading well into the night. I love fantasy and sci fi books and this one was one that I really liked . The book is fast paced and action packed. So if you like fantasy books check it out . Won't be disappointed

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

I'd ideally give this book 3.5 stars. Although I did find this really entertaining to read, it took me a little while to get fully settled into this story... and I felt things kept changing faster than I was expecting and that seemed just a bit too fast.
I thought the very first scene of the book was really intriguing, but it was somewhat confusing and I didn't think the background was explored in a satisfactory way. While I did like the hints of feelings between Nicole and Jack, I felt that things between them were rushed. I would have liked to know more about Jack's past and his family. I didn't feel that their relationship was allowed to develop at a natural rate.
I did think that a bit too much of the story was told through dialogue, rather than being able to see events happening. There were passages of time that were skipped over that was a bit confusing, due to there not being enough development shown.
I did like the fact that there were no true bad guys, although it would have been good to have the opportunity to make judgments about the different races for myself. Most of the characters were clear and easy to follow, though. And it was good to see Nicole's relationship with her father and her grandfather. I would have liked the opportunity to learn more about her mother, though... but it was good to see hints of a past that made her hard and bitter. I had a lot of sympathy for Nicole, even though I think there was too much telling rather than showing about her intelligence.
It was good to be able to see the kind of technology they had and that there needed to be an ambassador to the League. Although I was missing the first part of this story, I did find this book to be really easy to follow.
It would have been good to have the opportunity to see a redemption style storyline, since one was hinted at towards the end of this book. I'm not sure I'd read any more books in this series... perhaps to see what will happen with some of the secondary characters. I did like the fact that there were different sides to the histories, though.
Earth has entered into interstellar travel with the assistance of an alien race known as the Valhari. Hank, President of the Earth Space Alliance, has been asked to become Ambassador to the League of Sentient Species on planet Val. When Earth faces a chance of destruction from a collision with the rogue planet Ronin, Hank suggests that his daughter Nicole lead a team of experts on a mission to select a new planet on which Earth's population could live.
New Eden is beautiful with its gold sky, blue grasses, and red trees. It seems like the perfect place to establish a new home. Nicole, acting Governor of the new colony, sets out with a large group of Alliance soldiers, doctors, researchers and other professionals to begin building a new civilization. New Eden turns out to have more challenges than first appeared on their initial mission. They learn that they are not alone on New Eden. The Machrys threaten their very existence. The Shatara, mysterious survivors of a 5,000 year old crash, offer to come to their aid. And, there is always the threat of the Hantari.
In addition to the need for a new home for Earth, there is an amazing natural resource on New Eden that will create great wealth for the colony and guarantee its success. Nicole and her colonists have no choice but to remain and defend their place on the planet.
New Beginnings is an exciting and suspenseful Sci-Fi book. And, there is a touch of romance. It is well written.
( I was given this book for free in exchange for a review) I really enjoyed New Beginnings, typically I stray from Sci-fi books, but the synopsis really drew me in. The friendships and betrayals had me hooked and turning page after page, but preferably I would give this book a 3 or a 3.5, one of the main characters Dr. Nicole Reynolds was perceived at first to be cold and bitter; however once I really got into the story it was reveled in her background why she was so closed off which I did like. I would have like to have read more about the mother though.
I do think that too many parts that could have been explained more were skipped over in favor of more dialogue, I found I had a lot of empathy for Nicole even though her intelligence was shown more than her emotions. The relationship between Jack and Nicole felt forced, like the characters were written for each other (obviously) but didn't really belong together.
It would have been more beneficial for there to have been more background on most of the main characters, so that we could have developed more of a relationship to the characters through reading.
All in all New Beginning was a nice book to pass the time with, but I am not entirely sure that I would read more books from this series because of the lack of development in the characters, but did like the development of the Alien characters history.
If you are someone who enjoys hard science-fiction like me, I recommend staying away. The science parts are weak to the point of ridiculousness, which becomes grating after a while.
The plot I can only describe as an unhinged rewrite of a certain Star Trek: Voyager episode. The flow of the story is very...abrupt for the lack of a better word. New plot developments keep popping up out of thin air, each one being presented as 'this changes everything!'
The thing is, none of these developments really change anything at all. I never was convinced by the characters as they seem to lack any sort of autonomy and are steered entirely by what the plot demands of them. As they are all as flat as a board, character wise, this is only to be expected. Combine all this with the weak science bits and I spend a lot of time groaning and rolling my eyes.
The only reason I don't one star this is because the writing itself is well done and has a good flow. For this reason I feel this story would have been much better off had it been a fantasy setting aimed solely at young adults. If you are a veteran science fiction reader there are better novels to be found.
With the help of alien technology, Earth has finally passed the threshold of the solar system and is ready to explore the outer realms of space. After a rogue planet nearly collides with Earth, it is decided that humanity must begin to colonize other worlds to ensure it's survival. The perfect planet is chosen, New Eden. However, this untouched world holds dangers of it's own.
There are many messages throughout the story. My favorite is the power of forgiveness and it's power to change even the hardest of hearts.
I'm a huge fan of science fiction. I love being whisked away and transported to another world. I think this is the book's greatest element. The author is very adept at not only creating whole new planets, but entirely new cultures with detailed and intriguing histories.
However, the plot still fluctuates, delivering the reader action, suspense and even a little romance. The plotline contains many characters. Yet, the author was able to give each their own personality with diversity and depth.
Overall, New Beginnings is a well written book and I recommend it to any sci-fi fan.
