Blue Star Enterprises #1

Blueprints for Tomorrow

Rate this book
Every upgrade pushes Alexander closer to a power others would kill for.
On a dusty fringe station far from civilized space, Alexander scrapes by repairing the junk no one else will touch. The shop is a dead end, and his memory is fractured, yet each job sharpens instincts he can’t explain and reactivates dormant systems with capabilities no civilian machine should possess.

Alexander knows he isn't built like any other robot, and someone has noticed.

A pirate lord has marked him for capture, convinced Alexander can build the war engines he needs to elevate his rag-tag fleet into an empire.

As Alexander unlocks the secrets within his damaged body, he’s thrust into a fight to protect the only people who’ve shown him kindness. He will have to rebuild shattered defenses, restore derelict stations, and reverse-engineer stolen technology to keep his new home alive and lay the first foundations of an enterprise that will one day shape the frontier.

Perfect for fans of Bobiverse, Backyard Starship, and Expeditionary Force.

Okay, the general, through plot, if this story is nothing new from books like Citizen if the Galaxy, Ties of Blood and Silver, or many Kieth Laumer books.

Still, it's awesome.

The main character is a mind in a robots body with memories of 400 years past and no idea what happened to them. That's a mystery still at the end.

But you don't really care, cause the writing is good.

There's a type of space opera exemplified by novels like Provateer Tales and the Stardock series where the planning and problem solving of the protagonist is meat of the story. When done correctly abd paired with character development...as in this book....it can be a joy to read.

Now if you've read my other reviews you know I tend to check for realistic authenticity in terms of modern diversity. You don't really get that here. The author explains the ethno duality of the work by citing ethno immigration trends and generally works as a concept.

Would I lokebto see more diversity?

Yes, but it's lack is not as glaring as the Trumpian dream of the Archetect series. In that series American style right wing white supremacy is on full display in its worship of Orientalism and Norse culture and pointed exclusion of African Americans....Latin are through in as a goodly after thought.

In this work, there are mainly two ethnicities in the narrative m, but neither is worshipped or stereotyped, and it's pretty clear that other ethnic groups could be around.

It's well written, well paced, and has great character development and is a fun read.

fun

Guy wakes up in robot body. Works in a junk yard. Drama happens. He starts a repair shop, more drama. He is forced to flee but is now wealthy enough to buy a deserted outpost in the fringes of space and get mercenaries to guard it. He starts rebuilding the outpost while dealing with… drama. Squatters turned employees are there. Pirates attack. And his past station is now in pirate territory. He defends his new home and gets richer. Now he’s set for a new arms race before more drama comes. Book ends.

A fun read. Enjoyed the reincarnated to a robot aspect. Good mystery element. Interesting world. Characters are fairly uniform, but they are all the result of institutional corruption. Wonderful pacing. Good resolution. Please enjoy

I found M.J. Markgraf’s tale of a man from our time who wakes in a robot body who wakes up on Petrov station four centuries from now from a Facebook ad. Humanity has spread through many star systems until it reached an alien empire. Alexander finds a way to free himself from his new owner and sets up a small repair shop because he has a knack for technology. Asked to repair the engines of a merchant ship, he makes enough improvements to patent the changes. Luckily that brings him real money that allows him to buy a remote research station a few lightyears out of STO space when Petrov station asks him to leave with his new adopted daughter. With enough Blueprints for Tomorrow (ebook from MoonQuill) he intends to become a ship builder. Unfortunately Pirates take over a number of stations including Petrov and are coming for him. I preordered the sequels and am looking forward to continuing the tale.

Better than Anticipated

Good character development, an interesting plot line and a judicious use of magic science tech kept this book appealing all the way to the end. Most characters have layers, at least the major players, and the plot ins and outs help hold things together. Ends with most story threads resolved, and a couple of new ones introduced which lead into the next installment.

Great read!

This book was full with so much technical jargon that sometimes it’s difficult to follow. However, it is immensely exciting to read about all of this not having a clue if any of it makes any sense at all. Really enjoyed reading this and certainly looking forward to what I hope is another volume. Highly recommend.

The writing is pretty flat and none of the supporting characters really have distinctive voices. Still, while I wouldn't refer to the book as "cozy" it's a pretty solid slice of life story about a robot with a mysterious past who fixes things, adopts a daughter, and slowly starts to build a community.

nothing special

This book feels like it didn’t do anything fun or unique.

The main villain is villainous to an extreme with little to no motivation/ character development other than they want power and have 0 morals.

The OC seems a bit to naive and clueless while also being very competent to an annoying degree that feels very trite for the genre.

Would pass on the series

Creative stuff and a great read

This is a book that I kind of been waiting for. I read science fiction quite a bit and it usually follows a rhythm Rhythm Rhythm and you kind of get where you headed. Here The rhythms just change as if we were playing elevator music to go into rock and roll it's was different and quite enjoyable. Take time and read this book.

A Wonderful Surprise

I wasn't sure what to make of the ad for this book. Seemed.like an interesting concept so I jumped in. First chapter of two kind.if dragged, but it got better. Like the plot, like characters. Give this one a try, you'll like it.

Excellent story. MC is an intelligent mechanical construct which has self-awareness. The trials and situations the unit works through are well written and plausible in the MC's universe. I heartily recommend the story and look forward to additional stories from tnis author.

Give this a miss

Wooden. Stilted. Immature. And for heaven's sake, it's "ordnance" not ordinance! Reads like AI slop got passed through a filter to make it more wooden. Editors are really necessary!

space opera for sure!

Fine start to a new space opera. Plenty of bad guys (and gals) and some real good folks. Back stories are still developing, but promise to be interesting. Read it!

Great story

A few plot holes distract from an otherwise engaging tale. Good guys, bad guys, action, and ingenuity. Makes an interesting tale.

The 60% mark to the 90% mark largely consisted of the MC doing crafting (a genre that I find dull - so I skimmed much of that section). The the rest of the book was excellent space opera.
