The Black Templars are a crusading Chapter of Space Marines who wage faith-fuelled campaigns of fiery extermination against Humanity's many enemies. They hail the Emperor not only as the Master of Mankind but also as a literal deity to whom they swear binding vows to extinguish their most hated foes. Theirs is a ceaseless crusade. It is fought with holy blades and bolts, cleansing infernos, scripture-etched battle tanks and gunships, and the righteous fury of their zealous faith.

This is the first Warhammer book of any kind that I've ever read. A coworker gave me this after I expressed interest in learning the lore.
This is a small book that adds some additional lore to the Black Templars faction as well fleshing out their rules of play.
I didn't particularly care for the gameplay elements but the lore was really interesting. I've been in orbit around the Warhammer community for a long time via Reddit and one thing I've heard a lot about is this faction and the people who often gravitate toward it. For those who may not be aware, basically every faction in this universe is fascist to some degree, and the lore (though there are a few generally good characters) is basically entirely an over the top parody of fascism that no one could possibly take seriously, or at least that was the idea. This particular faction is quite possibly the most fascist of them all, and is unrepentantly so. It makes for an entertaining read but I definitely get why it has such an unflattering reputation within the community.
This Codex: Space Marines supplement for the, now obsolete, tenth edition of Warhammer 40,000 contains the chapter specific rules and lore for the Imperial Fists’ most fanatical Successor Chapter, the Black Templars.
The background section includes, to a greater or lesser extent, the history of the Black Templars from their founding to the tenth edition game’s present day, including a brief section on each of the largest Crusades active in the galaxy. As well as this, there is the usual information on the Chapter’s organisation, temperament, and the unique units and characters that can be used in-game.
The artwork in the supplement is as good as it always is and includes both classic and new, with the box art for the third edition of Warhammer 40,000 being used as a double page spread was especially good, as are the illustrations used for the Chapter’s Crusade Relics. The model photography was also of Gaes Workshop’s usual standard and the lack of alternative colour schemes isn’t an issue here as the Black Templars don’t have any major ones. The issue of repetition was also not too much of an issue as many of the images that were repeated were often cropped somewhat in one of them.
The rules section of the supplement includes the usual Combat Patrol force, Detachments and Datasheets for regular play, and the Crusade rules as was usual for tenth edition Codices.
The Black Templar’s Spearhead force is the Vow-Sworn of Vedrenn, an elite group of Bladeguard and Sword Brothren led by an Emperor’s Champion with a Crusader Squad for numbers. The composition and rules are reasonable and, theme wise, I can see them representing a small task force sent to fulfil a specific objective. I just wish, as usual, that there was more actual lore for the force.
Rules wise, the three Black Templar specific Detachments seem pretty standard for tenth edition and they are quite good lore wise with the Chaplain focused Champions of Vehemence and the Ancient focused Vindication Task Force playing into their faith and piety while the elite mechanised infantry of the Godhammer Assault Force focuses on that part of their character (they did invent a Land Raider variant specifically for such tactics after all). The actual Detachments and Datasheets for the Black Templars seem pretty standard for the edition as well.
The narrative Crusade seem quite lore appropriate for the Black Templars as well with their Oathsworn Campaign, Honouring the Creed, allowing players to construct their own Crusade Oath that grants their force Honour if they complete all four sections of it. There are also additional rules for anointing an Emperor’s Champion, as well as special Battle Honours that can be chosen if they gain enough Relic Fragments (wone through completing Oaths and using Agendas and Requisitions). There are also the usual Agendas, Requisitions, Battle Traits and Crusade Relics themed around the Black Templars that seem relatively standard for tenth edition.
