Relic of Haven: An LGBTQIA post-apocalyptic adventure

Rate this book
Are the monsters outside or inside?

Bastion is the last human city, a bulwark against the desertwalkers and the ocean.

Or is it the last? Back in Bastion after barely surviving the desert, Harvard and his crew struggle to readjust to life away from the danger of the dusts. But Devrin, the mysterious architect of so many of their troubles, has a new mission for the crew, and he’s taking captives to make sure the crew obeys him.

Giant crabs are not the only monsters in this world. Even stranger beasts lurk across the ocean, along with a hidden island the people of Bastion are unaware of. Devrin insists the island houses an ancient relic that could secure the future of Bastion, and Harvard and his crew are just the ones to retrieve it.

Return to a world of post-apocalyptic giant crabs and human scavengers with Relic of Haven, the sequel to Empress of Dust, by Alex Kingsley!

This was a strong sequel in the Bastion Cycle series, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed from the previous book. The characters were everything that I was hoping for and enjoyed about the first book. Alex Kingsley has a strong writing style and was glad I read this, it was a wonderfully done post-apocalyptic novel.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Empress of Dust was one of my top reads last year and Relic of Haven was a nail-biting sequel that definitely lived up to the first book. The whole crew is back together and the drama is ramped way up! Honestly, my favorite thing about this series is that you can tell Kingsley just loves sci-fi so much. That comes through in the best possible way. Stop sleeping on this queernormative post apocalyptic masterpiece y’all!

The gang is BACK BABY!! I love this weird little crew so dearly and I love seeing them navigate the world outside of the dunes! New creatures! New relationship dynamics! Same mismatched found family! Relic of Haven delighted me and served as a perfect sequel to Empress of Dust. I love you, Speedy <3 Can’t wait to see how the series ends!!

This book picks up with the Ivies (desert scavengers) back in the remaining human city, Bastian. They thought they could settle down to a life there, but their pasts and various parties won't let them go. Bastian and its leaders (the corps) have many secrets which Chavi, Harvard, and their friends would be just as happy to not be part of.
The story is interesting, the action builds and can be intense, and world building is well done.
That said, though their relationships are complex, the characters are flat, and while the world is well described, the author seems to have a marked aversion to describing the characters’ physical features.
Also seems like this could have been split into two books. In the first part, they are forced away from Bastion on an errand with serious consequences, while the rest of the plot arc is in the city.
I struggled between giving this 3 and 4 stars, given the plot and world is so well done, but that extra depth is lacking.
