You ever wake up with black wings, crimson lightning in your veins, and the sinking realization that you might not be entirely… you anymore?
Yeah. Welcome to my life.
Name’s Levi Ward, former lab rat, current walking science experiment, and apparently the world’s favorite boogeyman. Asphodel thought they broke me, turned me into their weapon. Maybe they did. But I’ve got my own plans for this apocalypse, and they involve tearing every last one of them apart piece by piece.
The problem? Amanda, sarcastic, stubborn, infuriatingly gorgeous Amanda, won’t let me go quietly insane. She’s hellbent on dragging me back from the edge, even if it kills us both. And with Jade pulling the strings, our little war isn’t going to end in a hug and a happy reunion.
If you like explosive fights, bad decisions, and love stories that burn hotter than a lightning strike, pull up a chair. Because this isn’t just survival, it’s vengeance. And I’m really damn good at vengeance.
The continued journey of Levi and Amanda does not disappoint. Our reluctant hero battles his fear of losing his humanity, while Amanda steadfastly believes in him. Fear, loss, love, and courage all ride shotgun in Wings of the Forsaken. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
I didn’t mean to fall for another apocalyptic spiral…but Jonathan Fitzgerald’s The Asphodel Project: Wings of The Forsaken dragged me in by the throat and didn’t let go. It’s not my usual smutty playground, but this one had me googling what ozone smells like and questioning my own emotional preparedness for the end of the world.
Fitzgerald doesn’t just tell you what’s happening…he shows you, viscerally, relentlessly. The prose crackles with tension and sensory grit. You feel the ash in your lungs, the ache in your bones, the desperation in every choice. It’s cinematic without being overblown, literary without being pretentious.
Two quotes tattooed themselves onto my soul:
“Because even if you fail, you’re still the only one trying.” “Careful’s for people who have something left to lose.”
Both hit like emotional shrapnel…perfectly calibrated for anyone who’s ever fought for something already slipping through their fingers.
And then there’s Chapter 18. One line detonated everything: “The sound felt like a funeral drumbeat.” It didn’t just echo…it reverberated through my psyche like a dirge for sanity. I immediately thought of Emily Dickinson’s I felt a Funeral in my Brain: “Kept beating—beating—till I thought / My mind was going numb.”
Fitzgerald externalizes the torment..drumbeats as ambient dread, the world fraying around the protagonist. Dickinson internalizes it…each beat a rupture in sanity, a descent into metaphysical madness. But they meet in the liminal space between perception and reality, where sound becomes symptom and numbness becomes refuge.
This isn’t just a thematic alignment…it’s tonal. Fitzgerald’s funeral drumbeat isn’t background noise; it’s a metronome for emotional decay. Dickinson’s poem offers the blueprint for that descent, mapping the rhythm of psychological disintegration with terrifying precision. Together, they form a duet of despair…one gothic, one metaphysical…both unforgettable.
If you’re craving a story that trades smut for stakes, and lust for legacy, this one’s worth the emotional damage. Fitzgerald delivers grit, grief, and grace in equal measure.
I really enjoyed this book, even though it hit me differently than book one.
What Jon Fitzgerald does so well — and continues to do here — is character, stakes, and heart. Book one pulled me in hard with the found family, the banter, and that sense of community, and that emotional foundation is what made this story work for me in the first place.
In book two, Levi’s journey becomes more solitary — and while I completely understand why that choice was made, I personally missed seeing more of that connection on the page. The internal struggle and the voices in his head are compelling, but the banter just shines brightest for me when it’s shared with the people who make up his world.
That said, the story is still strong, the tension is real, and the emotional payoff absolutely lands — especially because the relationships have already been so well built.
And yes… the ending got me again. Clone one of two is a sentence I will be thinking about for a while.
I really enjoyed seeing more of Amanda and her sexy, sarcastic, lady boss energy. Levi’s internal battles were rough, and they hit me in the feels more than once! The lab stuff got even more intense (hated it for the future welfare of our characters, loved it for me) and the chapter illustrations were gorgeous. There’s a lot of emotional torment in this book, and it’s done extraordinarily well.
And okay, yes. I know this isn’t a romance novel, there is so much more to it, but I have to note that Levi and Amanda are epic, and I’m so here for it.
Like Slated Jade, Wings of the Forsaken had me on board, fully invested, and already craving the next book. I can’t wait to see how everything plays out from here.
Wings of the Forsaken completely blew me away. The stakes are higher, the world is darker, and the characters are even more complex. I felt all the emotions — anger, heartbreak, and excitement — all at once. The romance is messy and perfect, the kind that makes you swoon while also stressing you out. And the twists! I thought I knew what was happening… I did NOT.
This book had me crying, screaming internally, and gasping in shock. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you love chaotic, morally gray stories with supernatural elements, you’ll devour it. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
Tropes: fallen angels, supernatural hierarchy, post-apocalyptic dystopia, enemies-to-lovers romance, found family, secret experiments, dark secrets & betrayals.
Another win for this author! This second book in the post apocalyptic series is filled with witty sarcasm!! An MMC that has an IDGAF attitude, and an FMC that is bad a$$! The found family is full of trauma bonding. My favorite quote from this book has to be “Then be ready. Because when you find him… you’ll have to fight him.” I smirked bitterly. “Good. Fighting’s my love language.” I would give the banter in this book 6 stars (out of 5) and a good 4 chili peppers for the spice!
I don’t even know what to say…! Jonathan Fitzgerald weaves action, emotion, (smut), and vivid world-building into a story that’s impossible to put down. The characters are layered and unforgettable, and the pacing keeps you hooked on every page. A must-read for fans of epic adventure and dark intrigue. I finished books 1 and 2 in one day and I need more!
I absolutely could not put this book down. It was fast paced and witty but also traumatic. The dry, sometimes morbid, almost always sarcastic humor in this series gets me every time. The story has me on the edge of my seat. I have so many questions! I need answers. I can’t wait to see what happens to these characters next.
Levi and survivor's guilt makes him a very dangerous man. Those voices aren't making it any easier and Amanda loves him way too much to let him go, even if she maybe should. And freaking Jade.....just ugh. Can't wait to read the next one.
