This collection is the perfect book for you to read to small children, or for young readers to try themselves. Divided into five sections, so you can always find the kind of story or verse that you or your child are in the mood for. Beautiful drawings bring each story and rhyme to life, making this an enchanting reading experience. The small chunky format is easy to handle, ideal for tiny hands to hold.
Nicola Baxter has written or compiled over a hundred children's titles. She has developed ideas for a wide variety of international publishers and lives in Norfolk, England, surrounded by cats and computers.
This massive book is a collection of many short fairy tales, poems, and nursery rhymes. It starts out big, with scary stories and intense plots including an old witch locking up two children, and a little boy climbing up a large beanstalk and having to run for his life from a giant. However it gets nicer and shorter as you read on. The stories are less intense and don't scare children. The book's content is all for little children and is very easy to read. It also will help kids learn more about rhyming and how to start reading basic stories (beginning, middle, end). I recommend this to little kids who can read some big words and understand rhymes.
This was my favourite book when I was a kid. The copy I have is worn out and has scribbles and markings on several pages, where my 4 or 5-year-old self attempted to note which stories I've read and enjoyed.
Comprised of 179 short stories, lyrics, nursery rhymes, and poems, this collection of tales is organized as follows: - Teddy Bear Tales (where all the stories feature a teddy bear. My favourites were 'Mr. Bear's New House' and 'The Exciting Life of Uncle Bobo') - Fairy Tales (all the classics. I quite enjoyed 'The Fisherman and His Wife', which was a fairy tale that I was least familiar with) - Animal Tales (an assorted collection of classic tales that feature animals. My favourite was 'Puss in Boots') - A Christmas Treasury (Christmas-themed stories and carols. My favourite stories were 'The Elves and the Shoemaker', 'The Christmas Carol Mystery', and 'Mrs. Muddle's Present Puzzle'), and - Nursery Rhymes (my favourite was 'I Saw a Ship A-Sailing'. On a side note though, there were many stories and nursery rhymes that referred to cats straight up as pussy, including a nursery rhyme called - and I kid you not - 'I love little pussy' 💀)
This book was also full of wonderful illustrations that I remember admiring as a child (I mostly looked at the pictures and didn't do too much reading).
Overall, reading this book was like taking a stroll down memory lane and is one of the few books that I still have from my childhood. I'm definitely keeping my copy of this book for as long as I live.
It was a little funny reading some of the Christmas stories in June, and the teddy bear stories in this book were never really for me, if I'm honest. But the fairy tales and nursery rhymes, as well as the animal stories are always fun!
This story book is good for kids between 5-8 years old. It contains a lots of minified stories of famous fairytales with great colorful illustrations. kids would love it.
Gla to say that I still own a copy of this book (although it is feeling a little sorry for itself!) - a book full of short nursury rhymes and stories and again I sometimes do flick through it and brings a smile to my face.
