The Story of Sir Walter Raleigh

Rate this book
Relates the story of Raleigh from his boyhood days on the coast of Devonshire, to his exploits in Ireland and his unexpected entry into the court of Queen Elizabeth. We travel with him as he pursues the ships of the Spanish Armada and makes voyages to the New World in search of gold and lands to settle. We see his efforts come to naught and hear how he is relegated to the Tower of London where he spends the last years of his life. Includes the fabled story of the velvet cloak and the role Raleigh played in introducing potatoes and tobacco to the Old World. One of the volumes in the highly acclaimed Children's Heroes series, first published at the beginning of the last century. Suitable for ages 8 and up.

Well written, exciting story. Seemed a bit biased. But enjoyable to read and listen to.

Good, simple biography for reading with kids. My second grader was really captured by this interesting life, and I was inspired to learn more from a more detailed biography.

This book can be a nice companion book to Westward Ho!
I really enjoyed the book and will have my children read it.
So many Proverbs came to mind when reading this. Proverbs 26:28, Proverbs 23:1-3, Proverbs 26:20
Raleigh was very ambitious and talented but became a victim to ambitious, jealous, lying men not to mention the queen of whom he was a favorite. It is dangerous at the top.

This was an interesting introduction to Raleigh’s life. I wish more of his poetry had been incorporated.

My two sons, 9 and 7 years old, and I learned a lot about Raleigh. We're acquainted with him now. They loved the book much more than I did.
