The perfect girl. There’s no such thing in the real world, but upstairs in Dale’s attic, he has a dollhouse full of perfect women: his special girls with their smooth plastic legs, silky hair, flawless faces, and lovely curves.
Unlike his abrasive mother and catty sister, his girls don’t think he’s a loser or belittle the job he loves. They listen when he shares his problems, and they comfort him and offer advice. He knows it’s just in his head, but his dolls are the only ones who love and support him.
But then, Dale’s dream of bringing his special girls to life comes true. Now they feel real, and he can truly talk with them, touch them, and even make love to them. But perfection doesn’t last. The girls who once loved him don’t listen anymore, and they start turning on him. Dale’s dream world is falling apart, and he must regain control. At any cost.
Reading has always been a big part of Suzi’s life. She even won the most-pages-read award a few times in her junior high English class many, many years ago. She started several writing projects as a kid but never actually finished anything, and then she took a big break from writing that lasted well into adulthood.
She’s written in a variety of genres, including horror, suspense/thriller, and women’s fiction, and has even dipped into fantasy slightly with her fairy tale retellings. She has also published contemporary young adult stories under the name Suzi Drew.
Her job as a freelance editor means she gets to read at work too, something she enjoys immensely. Outside of the writing world, she likes spending time with her family and friends and her sweet and fluffy dog.
Wow. This was short, creepy, and Dale really needs some help. Dale seemingly has everything going for himself. The only thing he can't seem to do is find a genuine girl. He wants the perfect girl. What he does have, is an attic full of dolls. Dolls that he deems to be perfect. When Dale finds a way to bring the dolls to life and transfer himself into a doll, he thinks this is the perfect opportunity to be with his perfect little woman. Until he realizes, that even dolls aren't perfect. When his perfect little women start turning on him, he loses his mind in order to try to regain control. This was creepy. The way Dale obsessed over his dolls.. I mean, he has know that would freak any girl out, right? Maybe not in his head, but I know I would be extremely uncomfortable and weirded out too. The story is short, but super fun, well written, and keeps you hooked. I especially enjoyed the chilling setting of the story, taking place in an attic. If you're looking for a quick little, unsettling story, I highly recommend this.
File this novella under: skin-crawling psycho-sexual thriller
The protagonist, Dale, is your garden-variety passive creep. He’s a flop with the ladies and is pushed around by his hoity-toity family. But he’s got one thing going for him: the doll collection he keeps in his attic. He hears his girls talking, and they seem to hear his replies.
Dale decides it would be great if he could bring his dolls to life, and also turn himself into a living doll. (So they can, you know.) Thanks to some contacts in the world of black magic, the dream becomes a reality.
Sort of. I won’t go any further so as not to spoil things.
I’ve read several of Wieland’s books, and always appreciate her efficient prose. There are no extraneous adjectives or unnecessary descriptions weighing things down.
There was a bit of an Easter egg for me at the end, as there’s a subtle reference to a California serial killer whose house (long since abandoned) I once lived near.
Dale is doing well enough for himself, yet he finds himself badly treated by most women in his life. His secret joy lies in his custom dollhouse and carefully collected dolls, his "special girls". They treat him nice. So of course he'll wish they were real ... The novella is really fun, it went a different direction than i expected, and it left me really curious about what's going to happen. Honestly, the setting would make a brilliant novel, especially with an even darker tone. I enjoyed this book, and if you're in any way enjoying doll horror, do check this out!
Dale has an average life. A job, mean sister, and beautiful girls waiting at home. What else can a guy ask for?
Wow I just.. Excuse me while I pick my jaw off the floor. The book went into an entirely different direction than I thought it would have. Decided to keep the summary short and sweet because it’s best to go into this book blind. It had some unexpected twists which reminded me to be careful what I wish for. I highly recommend this sweet novella.
I absolutely loved this! Going into this book I figured it would be a little weird and creepy and it definitely delivered in the best way possible! The author was very descriptive and did an amazing job in making all of these characters come to life. If you’re thinking about reading this book, please do! I highly recommend!
Omggggg! In the beginning of the book, I had felt so sorry for the main character. His family was not too kind to him. He struggled alot with confidence and such, I felt for him. By the end of the book, I was loathing him and glad that the book ended the way it did! It too me by complete surprise! Such a great and scary story!
What happens when your dolls come to life, and you join with them? Dale finds out in this short and dark novella by Suzi Wieland. Suzi doesn't pull out the stops in this weird and dark horror tale. Dale quickly learns that these women are not going to do as he thinks and it only gets worse from there. The ending is powerful and dramatic. I can't wait to see what Suzi has in store for me next.
