Annie Knows Everything: A Novel

Rate this book
Annie thinks she knows what’s best for everyone. But when her life goes sideways, the inner workings of her own heart become a total mystery—can she stumble her way to happily ever after?

“This is the tech-world romance I didn’t know I was craving. Crisply written, smart, and full of unique, quirky characters, this is a truly joyful and healing love story. I give it five big stars.”—Annabel Monaghan, New York Times bestselling author of Nora Goes Off Script

After getting let go from her job and learning her sister is engaged to the worst man alive, Annie needs a win. Filling the open role in her company's data strategy team is just what the doctor ordered. So what if she doesn't know how to write code? How hard can it be? Surely Connor—the team's overworked, aggravating, and distractingly hot interim head—will soon realize how capable Annie is.

Annie sets her sights on landing this new job, even if that means ignoring the chemistry building between her and her new boss, and she tries to (gently!) convince her sister to reconsider her engagement. But with sparks flying at work and at home, she begins to see how complicated taking matters into her own hands can be. Maybe, just maybe, Annie doesn't actually know everything.

I wanted to like it, but I was just so bored reading this. Nothing really happened and I didn’t care about any of the characters.

Annie was an interesting character in the beginning. I enjoyed her confidence and determination. But that didn’t last long. Because what I found interesting and endearing about her at the start soon became insanely annoying. And yeah, it’s not a surprise that she’s annoying and a know-it-all. It literally says so in the title. But if that’s her only personality trait then how am I supposed to like her and root for her?
Connor was just there tbh. Like I couldn’t tell you one thing about him other than that he’s the head of the data strategy department, invented DinoCode and wears his hat backwards.

There was some tension between them, some banter, at the very start but that too fizzled out and they just switched to liking each other. Like they became familiar with each other so fast. I mean they met once, did a zoom meeting and then they were texting about non work related things all of a sudden. Did I mention he’s technically her boss, too? 💀

So yeah, I didn’t understand how their relationship developed the way it did because imo the relationship lacked any sort of real development, build up, tension and/or chemistry.
Towards the end, I did like Annie and Connor a bit more but at that point it was too late.

And then there was also this side plot with her sister Shannon, which I probably disliked most of all.
I get what the author was trying to do, and I do think that would have been important for Annie’s character. In theory. But in practice, trying to show Annie’s character development totally falls flat if you do it through her suddenly throwing her only correct opinion out the window.

Shannon’s fiancé Dan cheated on her shortly before their wedding. Annie found out and told her sister because Dan wouldn’t tell her and then the wedding was cancelled. So her sister only found out about the cheating because Annie told her, Dan would’ve kept lying to her. Now some time later the two of them are engaged again because allegedly Dan has changed or whatever. Annie still hates him and wants her sister to break up with him.
And the thing is, you as the reader hate him too. I mean how could you not, he literally cheated on her sister. That right there should be enough, but he was also just an unlikeable character throughout the whole book until the very end where you’re now supposed to like him in order for Annie’s (necessary) character development to happen. The author tried to show that by making her finally accept that she doesn’t know better than everyone else and believe that her sister is capable of making her own decisions. So in a complete 180 and for no reason at all, Annie’s all like ‘maybe Dan isn’t that bad after all’ suddenly. But unfortunately, he is and she was correct about that all along.

I am having trouble scoring this book. On one hand, I can tell this author can write — the pacing is solid, the dialogue flows, and the overall story is well put together. But honestly? I just didn’t enjoy it. The main character drove me up the wall, and it made it really hard to root for the romance or care how things turned out. Truthfully, as a data and analytics professional, Annie just made me super mad. I can’t tell if the author was going for that or not. I struggled with all the female characters, especially her sister too. Connor and the data guys were ok. So, I’m going to split the difference at a 3. Also, definite open door scenes that are a bit longer.

After being laid off, Annie somehow finagles her way into a new role at her company — one she’s completely unqualified for. She joins the data strategy team, full of technical experts whose skills she definitely doesn’t share. But what she does bring to the table is tenacity, confidence, and a strong ability to say no.

As she settles into her new role, Annie finds herself clashing — and sparking — with her boss, Connor. Their chemistry is undeniable, but with strict rules against dating your boss, things get complicated fast. Annie’s know-it-all attitude lands her in hot water more than once — with Connor, her sister, and her job. Can she admit that maybe, just maybe, she doesn’t actually know it all?

This was such a fun read! As a recovering know-it-all myself, watching Annie’s story unfold felt like watching an old version of me. And honestly, as an Annie, it felt like a must-read. It’s definitely a workplace-forward romance — and while I don’t always love office romances, her interactions with the nerdy data team were so endearing. And gah, Connor! Total dream boyfriend — boy genius, successful start-up founder, and handsome. Plus, he’s completely smitten with Annie. Swoon.

this was fun!! annie & connor had SUCH good banter and omg were so funny together. i also loved our other datstrat besties in this book. the dynamic between all of them was so fun to read about.

i love “annie knows everything” as the title because she literally acts like she knows everything and i applaud her for being so convincing.

connor was such a sweetie and i loved him. my main issue w this book was with how IMMATURE annie was at times. she acted 5 years old when she was around her sister and when talking about the topic of Dan. there is a way to want the best for your sister without acting how she did and continuously does. she was also super dumb and immature with the confidential information from the datstrat team. like what possessed you to act so stupid. i get her motive but she was so stupid and reacted so horribly. its her reactions to everything that just get me, she’s an idiot.

BUT i loved her too and thought she added so much humor to the book.

this was super fast paced and had my laughing out loud at times! definitely recommend it!!

This was ridiculously charming and just an absolute mood booster! After a mass layoff at her tech company in New York, Annie makes an internal transfer (thanks to her BFF in HR) from product design to the data strategy team, despite having practically zero coding experience.

But it’s no problem for the confident, radiant, fearless Annie. She’s completely out of her depth, but determined to prove she belongs. And I adored her for it. Even when her overstepping comes back to bite her ... like the time she sabotaged her sister's first engagement. I loved the drama.

Some of the corporate jargon and dashboard talk went completely over my head, but it's fine! The pestering from her boss Connor was truly its own kind of love language (re: Dino Code. IYKYK). The flirty back-and-forth insults and messages genuinely had me giggly. It becomes very obvious, very quickly, that Connor is a completely smitten man!

And I adored the dynamic within the data strategy team itself. This group of lovably nerdy coworkers brought so much humour with their quips, and the group chat exchange at the end was such a fun, hilarious bonus! I'm already looking forward to whatever Rachel Wood writes next.

(spice level: 2 open-door scenes, moderate to explicit details)

Wait…is office romance officially my new favorite thing? Because this book had me smiling like an idiot the entire time. The humor, the banter, the swoony little moments—I was all in. It actually reminded me a bit of Moderation, but this one felt lighter, funnier, and honestly kind of addictive.

And maybe it’s because I convinced my company to adopt Monday.com (yes, I’m that nerd), but every time they talked about dashboards and reports, I could totally picture the office. It felt so real, like I was right there watching it all unfold between coffee runs and project updates.

Also, I have to say—Annie is ridiculous in the best way. The kind of chaotic that makes you roll your eyes and laugh out loud at the same time. But she’s also wildly creative and full of heart, which made me love her even more.

The friendships were sweet, the roommate cracked me up, and I adored the whole Canadian family vibe. But Connor and Annie’s chemistry? Chef’s kiss. My heart was racing for about 40% of the book and I was giggling through the other 60%. If you love witty, feel-good, office romances that make you want to text your work crush immediately after finishing—this one’s for you.

Now I just need an audiobook version because I already want to re-live it all over again.

4.5 ⭐️ I adored this book so much! I had such a great time reading it and I’ve been so obsessed with Annie and Connor. This is such a great workplace romance book filled with loveable characters (both side and main), and sweet and laugh out loud moments. I caught myself smiling AND laughing too many times to count. I honestly enjoyed the writing so much. The banter, connection and chemistry between Annie and Connor was also top-notch. I’d just giggle with all of their interactions. I was also invested in Annie’s job and how things would go, as well as with her sister too. Overall, I felt all of Annie’s emotions while reading it and I did very much like having Annie’s POV only because it made her interactions with Connor all the more special. Uugh, they were so cute! I wish we got more scenes with them. I’d love to reread this again soon. I would recommend if you like Ali Hazelwood’s workplace romances!

3.5 ☆

Annie thinks she knows everything, but she absolutely does not. She's confident, driven and chaotically loyal, sure—but also a rash decision-maker and pretty clueless. Watching her story unfold was frustrating but in a way that felt oddly realistic?

I enjoyed the writing, the dialogue and relationships. The banter, connection, and chemistry between Annie and Connor were easily the best part. That said, I hated the sister, and parts of the ending didn't fully work for me. It felt abrupt and a bit underdeveloped. I get that the author was aiming for character growth, but having Annie back down from the one time she was actually right felt like such an odd choice—especially when Shannon's whole situation didn't make much sense but idk.

Overall, it's a light, fun, and quick read.

Thank you to Dial Press for the gifted physical ARC of the book!

A cute, entertaining romance - Rachel Wood's debut is one to watch out for!

A workplace romance set in NYC, Annie Knows Everything is about Annie, a smooth talker and problem solver who much like Jane Austen's Emma believes she knows everything.

Annie as a character was so fun to read about. Sure, she is chaotic and messy sometimes, but she was also funny, sarcastic, and most importantly, had great chemistry with her boss, Connor. The banter and slow burn was so well done and worth it, since their relationship was (for the most part) such a delight to see. (there are 1-2 open door spice scenes that are fairly skippable!)

I was also so happy to see the nerdy, tech side of their jobs, especially the tidbits about coding and data analysis. Annie's coworkers - John, Martin, and Ben, did not get nearly enough spotlight as they should have, but I did enjoy the sweet side character romance we did get. We also got some drama and tension through Annie's sister, Shannon getting engaged to a guy everyone hates (Dan), but I liked how that plotline was used to teach Annie how she simply cannot control everything as much as she would want to.

My only complaints from this book were the third-act conflict - even though I knew it was coming, and the lack of a dual pov, which would've made Connor's perspective easier to understand. I hated seeing Annie's character development temporarily get destroyed because of that conflict, although she did somewhat redeem herself and learn from her mistakes.

Ultimately, this was such a fun, feel-good read, and one that puts Rachel Wood on my watchlist for future romcoms! Definitely recommended!

Just finished Annie Knows Everything by Rachel Wood and it was such a cute, feel-good read 💼💖

I love a good workplace romance—probably because I met my husband at work 🥰—so stories like this always hit that nostalgic sweet spot for me. The banter between Annie and Connor was so fun and natural, and their chemistry? 🔥 Loved it.

The setting really stood out too 👨‍💻📊 Working at a rising tech company with Annie transitioning from product into a data strategy role made everything feel super fresh and interesting. There’s a lot of deep-cut office talk, and as someone fascinated by workplace culture and organizational behavior, I was eating it up 🤓✨

There’s also a side storyline with Annie’s sister Shannon getting married to a guy we definitely don’t love 😬 (hi, Dan 🙄), and that added some extra drama that kept things engaging.

⭐ 4/5 stars ⭐
It was cute, fun, and exactly what I was in the mood for 💕

Full disclosure: my romance ratings are very mood-dependent 😂 If I’m feeling soft and happy, I’ll rate them high… but if I’m annoyed at my husband, romance just doesn’t stand a chance 😅 So take my romcom recs with a grain of salt—but trust me on mystery, sci-fi, and literary fiction!

That said… this one? Totally worth it 💗 And can we talk about that cover?! 😍📚

This was sooo good!! I'm normally not a huge fan of books set in the workplace, but this book was a hit for me. I was invested in their jobs and the workplace dynamics, and I think that added so much to the story for me. I guess if anyone can make me a workplace romance fan, it's Rachel Wood! I really loved how this book was much more than just a workplace romance, though. I loved the sisterhood dynamics and struggles, Annie's relationships with her family, her self discovery and growth, and the side characters in her new role! There was so much to love about this book. It was so fast paced and witty that I read it in less than 24 hours. I was obsessed with the writing and storytelling. Also a huge fan of Connor, I thought he was an excellent MMC and loved that he told Annie the hard to hear things that she needed!! Their romance was super sweet and I loved the slow burn and tension of it. This was just such a sweet, feel good story that I'd definitely recommend for a spring or summer tbr. I am always up for a workplace romance — the banter, the tension, the alliances. I loved Annie’s integration into the data strategy team and her protectiveness over her coworkers. Everyone in this story was nerdy and endearing!

Not only does Annie Knows Everything explore workplace relationships, but also sibling and friendship dynamics. Annie’s strife with Shannon was both frustrating and heartwarming. We always want more for our loved ones, but who are we to determine what that more looks like for them? I loved this realistic portrayal of sisterhood.

Overall, this was a super cute romcom! I loved Annie and Connor’s relationship, the creativeness of DinoCode, and the well-developed cast of characters. This story was not unlike Jane Austen’s Emma with its know-it-all protagonist and matchmaking subplots. Highly recommend for anything looking for an uplifting and fun read!

So so good. Finished in about 48 hours, due to some travel issues (delayed and cancelled flights). Most of this was read in an airport or a plane.

This was a great workplace romcom. Funny witty banter. Cute interactions.

Didn't love the sisters relationship plot though.

But loved the tech industry backdrop as a workplace.

Quick easy fun read from Book of the Month.

This was so much fun! The humour was on point, loved the sarcasm, and the whole book felt more like general fiction than the usual run of the mill romance. There was none of the awful romance tropes that feel unoriginal, all the characters were flawed (especially the FMC, so high handed 😕) and they all needed to be taught a lesson about miscommunication. Some heat, nothing crazy, charming side characters, and a bonus duel. And Canada🇨🇦😊

Flew through this in a few days and loved it. Such an easily addictive read with such a strong voice that rings all the way through. My favourite part of this novel was the how clearly the character (and author’s) voice jumps off the page; sharp, dry, witty and endlessly readable. Amazing debut!

que "Why Can't I?" by Liz Phair... 🎵

*gently plucking electric guitar*

Annie Knows Everything is easily my favorite book I've read in a really long time! Each day, I found myself eagerly looking forward to diving back in. I completely fell in love with the characters and the story, which was both simple yet beautifully woven together to create an enticing narrative.

Get a load of me, get a load of you... Walkin' down the street and I hardly know you...

🌷 Plot 🌷
In this charming workplace rom-com, we follow Annie, a woman who believes she has all the answers for everyone around her, even as her own life spirals into chaos. After an unexpected setback causes her to lose her dream tech job in New York City, she finds herself in a data strategy position where she must collaborate with her irresistibly attractive manager, Connor. As she navigates the complexities of her new role, Annie also grapples with the chaos of her personal life, desperately trying to prevent her sister from tying the knot with the wrong guy.

It's just like we were meant to be... Holding hands with you, when we're out at night...

🏢 Character Dynamics 🏢
Annie and the whole gang were such a delightful bunch! Her & Connor's chemistry is undeniable, and I was rooting for them from the very start. The way their relationship develops feels so organic, allowing their connection to shine without any unnecessary hurdles. It was simply swoon-worthy! Reading this book repeatedly reminded me of the show "New Girl," with its quirky friendships and the humor that springs from that chaotic yet lovable group dynamic.

Got a girlfriend, you say it isn't right... And I've got someone waiting too...

🎀 To Wrap Up 🎀
Seeing Annie and Connor find their way to each other made my heart happy. This book is a true contemporary gem, and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone looking for a sweet and engaging romcom.

What it is, it's just the beginning...We're already wet, and we're gonna go swimming...

Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you?

Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you?

Omg I love reading recs from my romance bestie Anna Bass and god if the main character wasn’t literally so her - it’s perfect.

As a debut novel this makes me really excited. There was some great humor and dialogue in this. However the plot was not plotting I fear. I loved the sister dynamic, felt very accurate to me, but it felt like such a needless side plot that was only beneficial for the main character’s growth. I felt like the resolution was rushed and unsatisfying and it didn’t tie into the main romance/plot well either - it was slightly disjointed.

I also think that the main plot could’ve been plotting more too. It didn’t feel like we were really “working” or moving towards anything… felt very like “oh here’s a day by day work problem” - which works in some contemporary “slice of life” novels but does not work best in a fun rom com like this imo. Needed a stronger single obstacle for the main character I think. Also I felt like the main romance was rushed but loved their dynamic.

Fave parts were def the main character and her friends - the 3 work bros that felt like they were literal models of Please Don’t Destroy from SNL (even used the same names HA), her bestie Carrie, and her roommate Sam.

Overall I’m happy I read this book! Mostly because its fun to read a debut like this where the bones of some great writing are there. I can see the potential for this author despite this book not being the best. I’m excited to see what she does next!

Also god forbid I go visit her bookstore in Edinburgh in 3 weeks and get a signed copy. LIKE HELLO GOTTA MEET THIS QUEEN!!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to listen to the audiobook of Annie Knows Everything!

We follow Annie who just got fired without any notice and ends up getting a new position she is 100% in coding (with 0 experience). She has to convince her manager- Connor, a cute guy- to stay or she has to go back to Canada.

I absolutely LOVED this book! Annie has such a fun personality! I liked that she is determined not to give up. The subplot with her sister was really interested and a great way for the main story (with the company) to breathe a bit.

It had some miscommunication, which I am not a big fan of, but it didn’t last too long and made it annoying.

I would highly recommend it. I had a lot of fun listening to it!

5 stars from me.

I usually like to give myself a bit more of a chance to click with a debut author.

However, this was reading too young, too unethical, and yet...flat? So I have to shelve it, escape considering I'm wildly picky about workplace and these dynamics are...well.

When Annie finds herself being let go from her NYC tech job, she quickly finds a way to be moved across departments, right into something she knows nothing about (and a boss who she can’t stop thinking about). A low stakes romcom with characters that you’ll actually like.
