The Lightkeeper

Rate this book
If you loved King of Battle and Blood’s brutal passion, One Dark Window’s seductive corruption, and A Ruin of Roses’ raw dominance… step into The Lightkeeper, where salvation feels like sin and love wears the face of your captor.

Lilly once believed in the kings. The court burned that out of her. Now, summoned back to the capitol after years in hiding, she finds herself entangled in the games of nine kings — each with power enough to unmake her.

When she’s taken by one of the most dangerous men in the realm — a royal forged from shadow and rage — she becomes both his prisoner and his prize. Chosen to lead his crusade to remake the realm in his image, Lilly must decide if her light can survive his darkness… or if she must become something darker to survive.

Light and shadow.
Duty and desire.
He is her enemy.
She might be his salvation.
And together, they will either be the realm’s salvation… or its doom.

This is a world where love is a weapon, loyalty is lethal, and crowns do not ask to be worn — they claim you.

Good read

What a good read, I wish I could cure the sick, it’s a proper rollercoaster to ride. It’s well written and I recommend this book to others, adults, not children.

What a complex journey!

Lillianna, or Lilly as she prefers, is a woman born of a time and a place where girls have no power. Especially those from the noble houses; their job is to marry and have babies to strenghten the royal bloodlines, all while being subservient and silent. But there is one woman in the realm with a modicum of power: the Queen. Despite the Queen's ties to magic and all the power it brings, there's a catch: she'll also be tied to the nine Kings who reign by her side. NINE!?! Yikes.

Lilly wants nothing more than to live her own life and make her own choices. She's a powerful healer, casting magic to mend broken bones & break demonic curses. But she also carries a secret which has the potential to wreck every dream of independence she's ever held. When her secret comes to light her dreams shatter right before her eyes.

Trapped by the realm's nine kings, she's obligated to form bonds and relationships with them all, including marriage. Could you imagine having to wrangle the moods and needs of NINE entitled men? In many ways, Lilly gets taken advantage of. Readers need to be aware (and the author makes clear mention of this in the book's intro) of potential triggers such as dubious consent, forced proximity, and control / coersion. But, thankfully, Lilly is a young woman who is willing to push back, to yell and punch and kick and make herself heard.

At first, Lilly's tendency to refer to all the various men surrounding her (who are all gorgeous specimens, BTW) as "boys" grated on me. But she's right. They are all boys in one sense of the word or another. Some are impatient, some are selfish, some are sweet and tender... but they're all boys. They too have had power thrust upon them, and the potential consequences of their actions (and sometimes in-action) weighs heavily upon them all. I enjoyed watching the boys grow and change as they recognize Lilly's strengths and learn to give her what she needs.

If you're looking for a fairytale fantasy romance, this isn't it. But if you're willing to set aside 20th century conventions surrounding relationships, this is an intriguing read. Once Lilly's powers have united with all nine of her kings (and they might not be who you expect them to be at the book's outset), it will be their responsibility to close the rifts across the realm which have allowed demonkind to invade and massacre people, both commoners and nobles alike, across their kingdom. There were plenty of twists and surprises which kept me on my toes throughout.

There are almost two books here. The fist half is conflict and resistance, the second love and healing. Watching Lilly's Kings grow and mature into loving partners was a delight. The book's title hints at a series but I'm happy to report a satisfying conclusion free of cliffhangers or loose threads.

This story is filled with magic, political power struggles, all focused around Lily; a character I absolutely love. Her powers make her truly unforgettable - she is not just a healer, but also a powerful demon slayer, that blend provides her with a complexity that truly stands out. The author's writing finds a good balance of romance, fantasy, action, and intricate politics. Each chapter was filled with purpose and danger as well as world-building, which kept me hooked throughout.

Magical, romantic, and utterly captivating

From the very first page, The Lightkeeper swept me into a world of royal intrigue and luminous magic. C.M. Adams’ writing is elegant and immersive, making every scene feel vivid and alive. The slow-burn romance is heartfelt and full of yearning, and the characters are layered and memorable. Every twist felt earned, and the ending left me both satisfied and eager for the next book in the Royal Inheritance series. Highly recommended to fans of fantasy romance who love richly built worlds and tender, hopeful love stories.

Complex, intriguing with sprinkles of romance :)
Meet Lilly, a heroine who's more than just a healer. She can cure the sick and even break curses. Strong, independent, and resilient, she's a force to be reckoned with. The story is dark, creative, and full of unexpected twists and turns. With a hint of romance, it's also a complex story. This fierce and powerful female with special abilities and unwavering determination kept me on the edge of my seat.

This story revolves around Lilly, who is uncovering the full extent of her life mission as a descendant of a royal family. She finds herself surrounded by danger, which awakens the protective instincts of a group of royal men who seek to safeguard her. Unbeknownst to them, Lilly possesses hidden reserves of formidable strength. Naturally sensitive, she becomes fiercely protective when facing deceit, evil plots, and relentless enemies. An accomplished healer, Lilly excels in magical arts, particularly potion-making. She embodies the ultimate feminist, striving to achieve everything she desires!

The Lightkeeper drops you into a razor-tense court where magic chooses rulers, and a woman who’s spent her life hiding that power is dragged back to face nine very dangerous kings. It’s dark romance with sharp political edges—obsession, betrayal, and real consequences—anchored by Lilly’s “I’ll wear the crown on my terms” resolve. If you like court intrigue, hungry magic, and a heroine who won’t be handled, this hits cleanly.

I read a lot of romance books, and this one was a refreshing read. Lilly is a 6 one. All the heartache and loss in the book brought a few tears to my eyes. She is a true protector even when everyone tells her not to. The one thing that made me the most upset is Damien... wtf... why man??? Just why???  I am just glad she got the better deal in the end, even if she lost pieces of her heart along the way.

I went into this book expecting a typical fantasy romance, with a beautiful heroine, powerful magic, a bit of court intrigue and that's about it. However, this book turned out to be something quite different, and I mean that in a good way.

Lilly is a fascinating main character. She’s strong and defiant, yet deeply human in her fear and uncertainty. The story takes place in a world where women of noble birth are treated as pawns, but Lilly refuses to stay in her prescribed place.

That said, this isn’t a lighthearted “fairy tale” romance. The book deals openly with coercion, control, and moments of dubious consent. The author includes a note about this at the beginning, which I appreciated... it lets you go in prepared. Still, it’s not an easy read emotionally. Lilly’s circumstances often feel claustrophobic, but that’s also what makes her resilience so rewarding to watch.

The nine kings—yes, nine!—were an unexpected twist. At first, it felt like too many characters to keep track of, but each of them gradually became distinct, and I ended up appreciating how their personalities evolved. The first half of the book leans heavily into conflict and power struggles, while the second half shifts toward healing and trust. It’s almost like watching two stories intertwine: one about surviving, and one about learning to love freely.

What impressed me most was how the author tied everything together at the end. Despite being the kind of book that could have ended on a cliffhanger, this one feels complete. There’s closure, emotional payoff, and just enough mystery to leave you thinking about what might come next.

The Lightkeeper is a captivating story that skillfully blends dark fantasy, court intrigue, and a heroine’s fierce resolve. At its center is Lilly, a gifted healer with the strength to cure curses as well as bones. She is more than a survivor—compassionate yet unyielding, she refuses to be mastered even as the weight of destiny and the demands of nine kings close in around her.

The novel does not shy away from darker themes, yet it balances them with warmth, flashes of tenderness, and relationships that shift in surprising and authentic ways. The political edges are sharp, the magic both alluring and dangerous, and Lilly’s determination to “wear the crown on her own terms” makes her a heroine easy to root for. The romance is as bold as the story itself—at times steamy, at times tender—and adds another dimension to Lilly’s journey.

What really worked for me was the balance: sharp political edges, moments of tenderness, and a romance that isn’t afraid to get a little spicy. The relationships feel authentic, evolving in ways that surprised me, and Lilly’s determination to claim her power made me root for her all the way through.

There are moments where the pacing lags, but these are minor compared to the larger sweep of the story. The ending delivers both satisfaction and a sense of promise, leaving me eager for more.

The Lightkeeper is the kind of dark romantasy that grabs you from page one and refuses to let go. Lilly is a fierce, resilient heroine thrown into a world where power is both a gift and a cage, and watching her navigate the pull of destiny, danger, and nine very complicated kings kept me absolutely hooked.

The world-building is rich and immersive — full of magic, political tension, and the kind of atmospheric detail that makes every scene feel alive. I loved the emotional complexity woven through the story: the push and pull between fear and desire, duty and freedom, vulnerability and strength.

What impressed me most was how the relationships evolve. Nothing feels easy or predictable, and the slow shift in dynamics between Lilly and the kings adds depth and intrigue to every chapter. It’s intense, dramatic, and at times beautifully tender.

A gripping, beautifully written fantasy filled with high stakes, powerful emotions, and a heroine who refuses to be broken. An absolute must-read for dark romantasy fans.

While I settle on 3-3.5 stars, I would have given different ratings at different stages of this book. It has an intriguing premise, and I was quickly drawn in by the opening. It hooked me right away and showed real potential for a compelling story.

As the chapters went on, though, some aspects pulled me out of the experience. The writing was often repetitive, and certain passages were confusing, which made it harder to stay immersed. I also struggled to feel a strong connection between the FMC and most of the MMCs, though a few relationships stood out as authentic from the start.

That said, the relationships did grow and feel more genuine toward the end, giving a more satisfying conclusion. I was also surprised by the way some of the dynamics shifted, with characters leaving and joining the harem throughout — a fresh take on RH that I appreciated.

Overall, while this wasn’t my favorite read, I admire the creativity behind it and some aspects were really enjoyable.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’m not a fan of reverse harem stories, but this one was an exception. The worldbuilding and political and magic system drew me in. The idea of one queen having to be involved with nine entitled rulers at once was interesting to see unfold
Lily felt like a believable heroine. She’s a powerful healer who's also obligated to form relationships with nine kings. And they all grow alongside her as the story unfolds.
This is certainly not a soft fairy tail or romance story. It’s a dark fantasy romance that balances intensity with intimacy. The book never shies away from darkness, nor glorifies it. It explores what it’s like to be involved with dangerous men without being diminished by them.
Some may find the names challenging, but the author thought ahead and put a pronunciation guide right in the beginning, which I appreciated.
The pacing lags a bit at times, but there was enough intrigue to keep me invested. I could feel the love and thought that went into making this book on every page. And it resolves neatly without any lingering plot threads or cliffhangers.

The Lightkeeper features a powerful, sassy heroine, Lilly Blackwell, who is full of wit, grit, and independence. Queen since the age of 6, mastered by none, master of all. One of my favorite heroines of all time. I think I have a crush on a character in a book! Adams does a marvelous job of depicting all her characters. They are well-developed, fully breathing, living people within the pages of Lightkeeper. Her detailed, descriptive prose is delicious, breathtaking, horrifying, haunting, and decadent. Adams is a true master word crafter on the same level as George RR Martin. Her fantasy world is dark, sinister, and yet beautiful, but most of all, believable. This book gets a little spicy in the romance department, so if you're conservative, hold on to your undergarments! Be prepared to be blown away! The Lightkeeper is a spicy, steamy paranormal romance that will leave you craving more!

The queen

Lilly is in the forest at age 6 and merges with the queen, inheriting her power. She becomes a healer and demon killer, but her power has not yet been perfected. She unites with 9 kings, and they form a circle of power. Lilly feels their power and they feel hers. The kings serve and protect her. She becomes pregnant with twins. Even so, she continues participating in many romantic relationships including a threesome. Lilly independently saves their homeland from the demons/warriors that arrive through rifts in the land. The kings are proud of her, and she understands her capabilities and power.
The writing is good. The story will appeal to those who appreciate a strong female character. Some may not appreciate the ongoing “service” to the queen by 9 different men, which takes up a good portion of the story. I would have liked more action related to Lilly’s role as a protector of the land.

This is the second book I’ve read by C.M. Adams, and once again it was an interesting and captivating experience. The plot was engaging, with exciting characters that constantly kept me going through the pages. Just when I thought I had a handle on their growth, another surprise would unfold, pulling me deeper into the story. I especially appreciated how well the relationships between the characters were described, adding depth and emotion to the darker aspects of the narrative. The author’s warnings were also quite helpful. They set the right expectations for what was to come including the romantic relationship between characters.
The story itself is filled with dark, dangerous, and twisted events that made it both intense and addictive. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and would highly recommend this to anyone who loves dark fantasy with unexpected turns.

A darkly beautiful and utterly captivating read. This book pulled me in from the first page with its rich world of blood-bound thrones, forbidden magic, and a heroine who refuses to be tamed. Lilly is fierce, flawed, and deeply human - a woman fighting not only for survival but for the right to choose her own destiny in a world built to control her. The tension between her and the nine kings is electric, part danger, part desire, and watching those dynamics shift is as satisfying as it is unpredictable. The writing is lush and cinematic, with vivid imagery and a perfect balance between action, emotion, and slow-burn romance. I loved how the story explored power, freedom, and what it means to belong without losing yourself. A must-read for fans of dark romantasy who crave intensity, passion, and a heroine who burns brighter than any crown.

Dark, Magical, and Completely Addictive

This book hooked me from the very first chapter. Lilly is a fierce and compelling heroine whose strength and determination shine through in a world that tries to control her. The story is rich with dark fantasy elements, court intrigue, and forbidden magic, and the tension between power and destiny kept me turning the pages. The writing is vivid and atmospheric, and the world-building is layered with just enough mystery to make me eager for what comes next. It is a powerful start to a series that promises passion, danger, and unforgettable characters.

A captivating dark fantasy romance that draws readers into a world where magic binds Queens to Kings through both power and blood. Lilly, the proud, strong, and secretive heroine, is not the kind of character who bends easily. The story weaves destiny, defiance, and the longing for freedom into a journey that is both fierce and deeply emotional. Tense relationships, at once obsessive and dangerous, keep the plot constantly gripping. This is a tale for readers who love forbidden magic, dark passion, and the relentless fight to claim one’s own destiny, all set against a backdrop of power, intrigue, and fire.

I loved how Lilly hides her dangerous magic for so long, only to be pulled right into the political chaos when the final king is crowned. Lilly’s stubborn strength and sharp mouth made her such a fun heroine to follow. The kings themselves are all wildly different — some cold, some surprisingly tender — and observing those relationships shift was one of my favorite parts. The tension, the danger, the obsession…The court scenes are full of betrayal, secrets, and high stakes that kept things unpredictable. I also really liked how the story balances dark themes with real emotional growth. And the ending gives you a satisfying payoff. It was a good read.

A New World to Dive Into

When I saw this cover I knew I had to read this book. It was colorful, magical and right up my alley. The book was unique with a world unlike I’ve read with a queen and nine kings. It had so much potential for a great series inside this one book.
I wasn’t a big fan of Lilly. She was kind of a brat, even though she called the men that, and entitled. I also didn’t like how she repeated herself constantly. I didn’t get the feel that each king was truly unique. They used the same voice, movements and manners. There was a warning page, but there was nothing that was explicit or alarming to me as a reader. I’ve honestly read worse.

The Lightkeeper is an enchanting start to The Royal Inheritance Series. From the very first page, it pulls you into a world filled with mystery, faith, and emotion. The characters are so well-developed, and the story beautifully balances romance, hope, and redemption.

The author’s writing is rich and immersive — you can almost feel the sea breeze, the solitude of the lighthouse, and the emotional depth of every moment. It’s one of those rare books that leaves you feeling both comforted and inspired.

A truly uplifting and unforgettable read. Can’t wait for the next in the series

the lightkeeper

Lilliana Blackwell (Lilly) has been queen since she was six!

Lilly ends up with not one king... but nine but the end of the book! The beginning of the relationships starts extremely rocky, as she's basically forced into marriage, but Lilly eventually falls for each of the nine kings.

I enjoyed this novel and will be reading more from her.
