The Wolf & the Bird by Lyssa Em completely wrecked me in the best possible way. This contemporary romance delivers intensity, vulnerability, power, and devotion in a way that feels both sweeping and deeply personal.
Levi—the antisocial billionaire tech genius behind the Wolf firm—is not your typical brooding hero. He’s brilliant, isolated, and convinced that no one could possibly understand him. Connection doesn’t come naturally to him. Emotion doesn’t come easily. But then GiGi Byrde walks into his world.
GiGi Byrde is a newly hired PA for The Wolff Group trying to build a new life after escaping the shadow of her powerful and manipulative father—a rival tech magnate who treated her as nothing more than a pawn. She’s changed her name. She’s starting over. She’s determined to stand on her own.
What I loved most about this story is how organic their connection feels. Levi doesn’t suddenly become a different man for her—he struggles. He missteps. He doesn’t always show up the way she needs him to. But when he chooses her, he chooses her completely. Watching this emotionally guarded genius learn how to pursue, woo, and fight for a woman who challenges him was everything.
One of my favorite lines perfectly captures the intensity of his love:
“You’ve ruined every version of me that came before this.”
And this one? Swoon:
“I don’t want to control you, Little Bird. I f***ing love it when you push back on me.”
Levi doesn’t want to cage her—he wants to stand beside her. He wants her fire. He wants her strength. And when she finally understands that he was willing to burn down his own empire to free her from her father’s control, it’s powerful and deeply satisfying.
This book gave me: • An emotionally complex, antisocial genius who learns to love fiercely • A heroine reclaiming her identity and strength • Corporate drama and high-stakes betrayal • Groveling, devotion, and sacrifice • A hard-earned, deeply satisfying happily ever after
If you love billionaire romance with emotional depth, protective energy without control, and a hero who would quite literally risk everything for the woman he loves, this one is for you.
Absolutely five stars. I will be thinking about Levi and his Little Bird for a long time.

I received a free copy of this book from Lyssa Em in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
From the moment Levi Wolf walks in, you feel it — that instant connection wrapped in a slow, almost torturous burn. The chemistry between Levi and Gigi is undeniable. The tension? So thick you could cut it with a knife. Every almost-touch, every almost-confession keeps you turning pages.
Levi’s intensity toes the line between passionate and mildly obsessive, which adds an interesting edge to the romance. And just when you think the tension is finally about to snap… he pulls away. More than once. The emotional whiplash is real.
About halfway through, the story introduces a deeper layer involving Gigi’s family and a secret that explains why she’s hesitant to be seen publicly — especially alongside Levi. While it adds intrigue, it feels like it arrives a little late in the game. The sudden corporate accusations and betrayal subplot almost feel like a last-minute attempt to inject drama into what has primarily been a relationship-driven story.
For most of the book, the focus stays tightly on the push-and-pull between two people who clearly want each other but can’t quite get out of their own way. If you love drawn-out romantic tension and a slow burn that eventually delivers, you’ll probably enjoy the ride. If you’re looking for a layered plot with strong external stakes woven throughout, this one might feel a bit light.
Overall, it’s a tension-filled romance that leans heavily on chemistry over complexity — satisfying in the end, but it takes its time getting there.
If you like your romance served with a gorgeously hot, stupidly rich, emotionally obsessive man, then congrats — this book understood the assignment.
The Wolf and the Bird by Lyssa Em gives us all the billionaire fantasy: money, power, seclusion, protectiveness that borders on feral, and a MMC who absolutely would burn the world down if required. Add in an FMC with a truly awful family, a saviour dynamic that actually hits, and twists that keep you flipping pages instead of doom-scrolling — and you’ve got a damn good time.
Is it the filthiest thing I’ve ever read? No. Did it need to be? Also no.
The steam level is solid — not unhinged, but effective. Enough heat to keep things spicy, without overpowering the plot. And honestly? The characters are what kept me locked in. Lyssa Em has built a really strong group here — they bounce off each other well, feel purposeful, and make the world feel lived-in rather than “hot billionaire dropped into the void”.
It’s an easy, addictive read — the kind you start “just for a chapter” and suddenly it’s 1am and you’re already planning when to start book #2.
Final verdict: ✔ Hot billionaire ✔ Emotional obsession ✔ Trash family (defeated) ✔ Found-family vibes incoming ✔ Immediately adding the sequel to the TBR
The Wolf & the Bird by Lyss Em was a beautifully compelling read that pulled me in right from the start.
There’s something really captivating about the atmosphere of this story. The writing creates a sense of quiet intensity, where every moment feels meaningful and layered with emotion. The connection between the characters builds in a way that feels natural and deeply engaging.
What stood out most to me was the emotional depth woven throughout the story. The characters feel real in their struggles and growth, and watching their journey unfold kept me completely invested.
This is a 5 ⭐ for me because:
• the story carried strong emotional depth • the character connection felt authentic • the atmosphere was immersive • I was fully invested in the journey from beginning to end
Wow Levi wow!! This read was EPIC. I couldn’t put it down. So much so i was walking a reading and walked into a door. Anywho. This book gave me those feels when you texting your love interest and you smile with every message. I enjoyed every minute of this read Levi and Gigi just give you the butterflies in the tummy feeling you can feel all there emotions which is something Lyssa em is amazing at doing with her books. twist in the book I didn’t see it playing out the way it did and it literally made me run to the end. If your after a book that has you in all those first real love feeling this it is, I laughed, grinned like an idiot i was a mad, nervous at one point to and I cried.
Hooked from the first chapter!!! I thought this would be a spicy office romance, and it is, but there’s emotional depth and an unexpected twist that took it to another level. Gigi’s growth was lovely to follow , and Levi? Well, Levi is my new book boyfriend. He’s absolutely magnetic. I couldn’t stop reading.
This is a great read for those looking for a romance with some spice thrown in. There is yearning and longing while the characters figure out who they want to be to themselves and each other. The FMC is learning to stand on her own and when to lean into others. Whether she knows it or not. Now to read book 2.
I really like this author. This is the second book I’ve read of hers and really liked it. I enjoyed the characters and the story was great. Can’t wait to read more of her work.
Very good book. I’m a huge fan of the forbidden romance and this did not disappoint. The characters are so relatable and there’s even humor! I can’t wait to read more from Lyss Em!
Editing let this book down; font changes and incorrectly formatted chapters took away from a great premise. Add in the FMC going from sassy to submissive and back again made it hard to enjoy.
