Rate this book
When Texas bull rider Cal Bennett rolls into Wild Rose Point, Oregon, he’s just looking to recover from an injury and maybe reconnect with his high school sweetheart. Instead, he roped into a quirky small-town soulmate legend, caught in a scorching viral video with the local saloon owner and dropped right in the middle of a social media storm.

Willa Hartley isn’t looking for love, especially not with a cowboy the whole town is convinced is her perfect match. But Cal isn’t just her supposed soulmate. He’s still a cowboy, no matter how far he’s wandered from Texas. And when a scandal threatens everything, walking away from Willa might be the one ride he refuses to take.

I have always associated Delores Fossen with her Harlequin Intrigue series which I am not a fan of because she tends to write the same rinse & repeat plots & characters and basically only changes names & location, so I was surprised to see her branch out into something new.

That said, this was surprisingly a nice read if it wasn't for the always dreaded OW.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

So MMC is a rodeo cowboy/businessman. In HS, he had a GF (OW) that he was in love with and dated for a year until they parted when he went to college out of state. This OW was his "first everything" and they stayed in touch through the 10+ years with calls & texts here and there. So in the present, MMC decides to go visit her to see if there is anything still there even though he hasn't seen her in a decade.

FMC runs the bar in town with her mom. Her Grandma & Great Grandma spread a rumor years ago that if someone drinks a certain drink (beer I think) at a certain time and in walks a stranger, that person is their soulmate. So when MMC walks into the bar, the FMC is drinking this beer and everyone goes bat shit crazy for them with their teasing that they are soulmates. So if you don't have the town constantly teasing them, there's also a crazy bird who helps things along and a younger sister that I loved and hope she gets her own story.

I loved the MMC because he was a nice guy (not a manho) who loved all the chaos and kookiness and went along with it. They felt an instant attraction but FMC was fighting it for about 75% because she was burned by her ex fiancée the year prior when she caught him cheating on her with the OW that MMC was there to see and she wanted nothing to do with the MMC at first because she didn't trust men and love but also because she did not want anything to do with a man who OW had first. In other words, she didn't want her leftovers and she also didn't want to be in a triangle.

I loved that part because we never see a character outright say that they don't want a man who had any type of relationship with the OW. And MMC respected that at first because he wanted to end things first with OW before he could pursue FMC but he had to wait for some time for OW to show up which wasn't until the 75% and by then the MCs had already started something.

Then DF went with the whole make OW the evil monster nonsense which I always hate because I much prefer that we had gotten MMC's thoughts that he no longer wanted to see the OW. Which in a sense we did get throughout because he was always thinking of FMC and not OW and when OW does show up, he didn't like who she became as she was trash talking about FMC and he was not having it and also because OW was the one behind all the chaos & shenanigans happening to them. But my issue was mostly with the whole "first everything" nonsense history with OW. I always hate that because I feel all that firsts should be with the FMC.

Anyway, it was a sweet story and I did enjoy it somewhat, especially as it didn't have me DNF'g as I tend to do these days so there is that. I hope DF though doesn't backtrack and write the same plots and characters over and over again as she does with Intrigue in this new line of hers.

I love the Wild Rose Point books, and Still a Cowboy did not disappoint. Cal is a cowboy looking to take a step away from his life in Texas, so he decides to visit an old friend in Wild Rose Point. He quickly discovers that his old friend isn't who he thinks she is, but there's a new girl in town, and her name is Willa. Okay, she's not new to town. She grew up there at the Seaglass Saloon, but the moment Cal lays eyes on her, the spark nearly ignites the bar. Add in a legend, a curse, and a wild seagull, and you've got a great romance on your hands! Don't miss this one!
