Getting kidnapped by the System and dumped into a fantasy world wasn’t on Elias Critchley’s to-do list. Still, he’s managed to stay alive, level up, and keep most of his insides on the inside. Now the System’s sent him and his party to a crumbling estate with a haunted past, a grieving lord, and a boy only Elias can see—one who isn’t quite alive, but may not be dead either. The task? Fix it all. Quietly. Preferably without being eaten by anything with too many teeth. But with XP gains mysteriously throttled, creepy shadows around the estate, and the System seemingly taking things very personally, Elias will need every scrap of luck, wit, and teamwork he can get.
A darkly funny progression fantasy full of dodgy quests, genuine heart, and one slightly grumpy protagonist who never asked for any of this.
So first book, he's all about advancing and growing and keeps a level head about companions and his goals. Second book, he's snarking to the system and getting punishments and spending every other page worrying what a girl thinks. A girl who until then he always ignored on the bus and barely acknowledged.
First book was great, Didn't fall for the trope of falling for the first girl he saw and making it all about her. Even saw her undressed and still ignored that to realize she was a horrible selfish person and he had other things to focus on. Yet in the second book, instead of a level head about no romantic entanglements in a party and all the trouble it would cause, he's suddenly obsessed with a girl in his party and can't stop thinking about her and what she thinks of him every five seconds. One he's not even known a full week and seems to have no real interactions with besides being in combat together.
It is not even an exaggeration that it's every other page. Being very VERY literal every time he looks at the girl he flushes or worries what she thinks about what he's doing or how she'll react. Every time. With a small party of 4, that means every other page. So now instead of gaining levels and focusing on skills, we have a focus on awkward teenage romance.
Then we have the system which just throws off the tone of the series. With it being all snarky and vindictive but also personally speaking to the MC for reasons. What does Elias the MC do with that? Nothing! Just tries to stop thinking bad things and says nice things. Does he ask why they were sent there? No! Does he ask can he get home? NO! Does he ask whats happening on earth to his family? NOPE! Ask about the system protecting noobies from getting captured? not on your life. With a direct line to the system, he does do a single freaking thing with it!
Went from a interesting book where the MC seemed better a solo adventurer proving to everyone how far he could go with his wits and common sense practicle skills to wacky system hijinks and constant self doubt over a girl.
Not worth getting book 3 for me but perhaps some teens how can relate to random crushing on a girl they knew for years and constantly worrying what she thinks. Maybe for them this is great?
So the first book wasn't great but it was enough to keep going. It wasn't so bad that you had to just put it down let me say that. However this book it gets much worse It gets to the point where it's just blatantly plot driven. The characters even say what will the system tell us to do next and then the system tells them and then they go do it. It's so plot driven The protagonist no longer gets to pick his build the system chooses for him lol. So so bad.
I very much enjoyed book 1, but book 2 was a little disappointing. I didn't prefer the system listening to his every thought and punishing him accordingly. Also, I was less excited about the addition of a 9 year old boy to the team. The quests to save Vaeren were okay, but he should have been left with his twin at the estate. I am hoping that the storyline gets back on track with book 3 once they join the guild.
What a fun read. Something to sit down and enjoy while the world and all its problems fly by. Fun characters, and a system that is a well developed character in its own right. Fun and unique story.
Seriously, no interest whatsoever. It took a mid tier storyline and plot and turned it into something that was less appealing than listing to my ac system run.
