Cryptid Chronicles: The Rake

Some things don’t want to be found .

In 1984, a group of teenagers ventured into a cave outside Black Hollow, Mississippi. Only four made it out alive.

Twelve years later, Luke Garner returns when another friend disappears under eerily similar circumstances. With old memories resurfacing and new horrors emerging, Luke and his friends are drawn back into the shadows of the caves—and the unspeakable presence waiting within them.

What they uncover will test their courage, their sanity, and their grip on what it means to face true evil.

My scoring system

⭐ Don't quit your day job

⭐⭐ It was tough to finish

⭐⭐⭐ A solid read

⭐⭐⭐⭐ That was fun!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I need more. If you don't give it, I'm going to kidnap you Misery-style, without shattering your ankles, of course.

Let me begin by saying that the "Cryptid Chronicles"-series has grown into one of my favorite book series on the topic. The focus with each story is different - not just because of the cryptid itself (which are various throughout the series) - but also because of the difference in accents of the particular entry. This time, the story is rather contained - in length, in the story itself, and the characters. It features - not surprisingly - the Rake, which is a tough cryptid (in more ways than one) to portray. In this instance, I'm not entirely sure it worked. The story starts off with a wonderfully creepy vibe and very efficient and effective storytelling. The number of characters involved are limited, but the interaction works well and the first part really makes you want more. The same creepy vibe that featured in the first part, is somewhat missing in the remainder of the book and the ending, for me, was somewhat anticlimactic.

Still, it was a solid read and there's no doubt mr. Hayes is a skilled storyteller. It just didn't work out as well as with other installments in this series. In all honesty, that could be due to the subject matter; the Rake is a fairly unknown - and perhaps unloved - cryptid.
