Powerful use of imagery! Deitering masterfully portrays the sheer skill and grit the early seafarers and explorers possessed, and the struggles they faced for the greater good of civilization and mankind. Though a fictional tale, he truly captured the resilience and fragility of the human spirit. We are also introduced to more food for thought as the author shares insight into the potential effects on society post-voyage that are often overlooked- specifically the changes in social structure and the vulnerability of corruption. Lastly I really enjoyed the light shed upon the effects of such a journey on the captain and crew, and how they learned to overcome physical and emotional trauma. I do wish we got to see more of the kraken though!! Great Read, and looks great on my bookshelf!
