See our sweet alien saloon owner Rivven from Warden Hallum's province get his happily ever after in book 7 of the alien cowboy romance series, Cowboy Colony Mail-Order Brides!
7 books in and I haven't been disappointed by a single one yet!
I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars, but because of the ending I'm going to have to round up! I've been patiently waiting for Rivven's book ever since we first met him in book 4. He lost his hand in an accident shortly after arriving on Zabria Prinar One as a child. Because of this, he doesn't have a ranch and herd like the other guys do. Instead, he runs a saloon for the other ranchers and wardens.
Shiloh works in a factory, but really she's an artist at heart. After a run-in with her boss, she sees the ad for the marriage program. She sees the sky and nature on Zabria Prinar One and decides that's what she needs to get out of her monotone life. This already gave us a bit of a different premise to this book, because the marriage aspect isn't her main priority when going to the penal colony.
She arrives in a snowstorm, which stops the other alien cowboys from coming to meet her. She spends the time waiting for them with Rivven in his saloon. Seeing as marriage isn't her main thought, Rivven tries to prove to her that he can be a good husband and provide for her, and he obviously manages to slowly win her heart. His backstory was so sad, and he truly deserves the WORLD. Despite this, he still put Shiloh and her needs above all else. He's so selfless and sweet to her it was heart-wrenching to read.
I love how these books all follow a similar-ish setup, but the characters themselves are so distinctly different that each book still feels new and exciting. For example, if you compare this book and the last one: Zohro was very "I'll follow you wherever you go, you can't get rid of me." Contrastingly, Rivven offered to give up EVERYTHING in order to fund Shiloh as an artist. He was willing to give up his dream of a wife and let her go if that was what she wished for. If she wanted to leave and just create art, he was willing to give every penny he had to make that happen. *SOB*
I also love how we see/hear about the other couples in later books. I love all of these characters so much, and it's so fun seeing their stories continue in the background.
My only critique is that this book could have had 3,000 more pages (and that still probably wouldn't have been enough for me). There were a couple of aspects of this story, like Rivven's PTSD from losing his hand, that could have been addressed more throughout the book.
There is NO reason for me to give any safety warnings for this book/series. These alien men are so OBSESSED with their human wives that cheating, sharing, etc. is literally unfathomable. Also, there hasn't been a third-act breakup in any book of this series so far!
preread 11/24/25 I have been *obsessed* with Rivven since we first met him in book 4! I can't wait to read his story 🩵🩵
By now, with this being the 7th novel, I’m pretty sure I’m sounding like a broken record.
This has a similar set up of a human FMC who finds herself a bride to a cinnamon roll alien MMC, and what ensues is a bit of fun and funny due to the culture clash and really wonderful hurt comfort vibes with both characters.
Shiloh sees her trial marriage as an escape and refuge where she can find the freedom and agency that is currently lacking in her life. She’s not quite sure how the program works, but she’s more than willing to give it a try.
Rivven is the classic big softy who falls immediately the second he lays eyes on Shiloh, and all he wants to do is care for her and make her happy. This excels at the disability rep and self expression with some alien smexy thrown in!
Again, this series has become my reliable comfort read, and I hope it will be yours too!
i swear this is the sweetest alien series ever!! and this one takes the crown because HELLOOOO??? he is so sweet so considerate so gentle. my absolute favorite
“You’re telling me this feels like a dream?” I touched his chest, wanting to give him some relief. “You are my dream, Shiloh.”
Once again, coziness and sweetness pouring out of the pages. Great comfort read timing too because this was a busy week with germs floating around on top of that. I liked the shift that we got to a totally new set of guys under the different warden. Also how the marketing for the program is also shifting. Tasha's so passionate about getting these guys love and her husband stays supportive of what she's trying to accomplish, so they cameo a good bit in this book. This time though, the set up encourages the woman to have more of a choice in who she's going to marry vs the other matches which were either pre-paired or unusual circumstances.
Written in first person, dual POV. No ow drama, no real om drama from the other guys but the H does get possessive and touch jealous of the h's attention. The h had some experience, but it's glossed over and the H is once again inexperienced.
Some tropes/themes: ☆ Alien MMC with human FMC ☆ MMC isn't a rancher this time, he operates a saloon ☆ FMC is a factory worker dreaming of being an artist ☆ Some disability rep - migraines and an amputation ☆ MMC puts FMC before himself ☆ FMC is softer and more uncertain ☆ He thinks she's the most wondrous thing ever ☆ Ice skating ☆ The other guys are snowed in and late to the party ☆ Still with some mispronunciations and confusions between aliens and humans ☆ Still a touch of group chat and cock tail talk
Rivven (H) and Shiloh (h) are precious. Like some of the other ladies, Shiloh sees this move as an opportunity to escape from an untenable situation. She's had grief in her life with the loss of her father and being unable to pursue her art. Riven was such a sweetheart, wanting to make Shiloh as comfortable as possible. He also ensures that she understands she has choices later in the story. Shiloh needed that care and sense of safety, which she definitely found.
In addition to their sweetness, of course there's some good steaminess. Rivven might not have the hands on know how til Shiloh, but he's a fast learner and enthusiastic. They're both so eager and hot for each other. The alien boy book and graphics keep getting improved upon so the cocktail is more intriguing than terrifying now too lol.
Even though Shiloh is kind to the other guys, when they get there anyways, it's always clear it's going to be Rivven who she ends up with. Which shouldn't be a spoiler based on how the books are written. The characters get their HEA and the epilogue is more loveliness. It did feel like this was a little slower of a read this go round, but I was also very distracted by life stuff and was reading it in short bursts over a couple days instead of my usual bingeing in an afternoon. I also questioned how Rivven made money with the saloon just on the two guys in his section, it seemed more like other territories should have been able to sometimes go there too, but I don't know.
I'm excited for the next book naturally and to see how the series keeps growing!
Ursa Dax has officially broken my brain. I am OBSESSED with this series and I want to wipe my memory so I can immediately read again.
IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!
I would love fifty books in this collection because I could never tire of these adorable alien cowboy convicts. Every instalment feels unique and this couple is just so gosh darn cute. Shiloh wants nothing more than the freedom to paint and then she meets Riiven, a chivalrous cinnamon-roll saloon owner who lives to make her smile.
It is equal parts sweet and hilarious and it even made me cry happy tears. My only complaint is that it ended too soon and now I have to wait until February for the next one.
If you haven’t started this series yet you really should because they are all bangers. If cozy alien smut isn’t usually your thing this series will convert you.
“Xennet: Husband. Chair. Knife. Bed. And most excellent future father!”
ARC review.
I am now also smitten by the alien saloon owner.
Quick thoughts below: 🪣 I’m such a sucker for a sad boy alien and Rivven is the ultimate simp sad boy. I want an entire series on just him. 🪣 I loved that we were able to meet all of the new characters in this one while still being able to witness Warden Tenn’s unique way of showing love to his boneheads 🪣 The chronic migraine rep yes please 🙌. Having an alien only care that you’re ok and not at all concerned about you spending days in bed? I loved seeing this in a book
Overall highly recommend. My only criticism is that I do wish that the books were a tad longer. I feel like they have been shorter for the past few books and I think they really shine when they’re >250 pages.
when he didn’t even know what a migraine was but he immediately clocked that his horny lantern eyes were hurting her so he started walking around with his eyes closed 😭😭😭 i am NEVER getting over these alien simps and this world. i do however miss the og shenanigans the first few books had, like the famous snake in bed scene. the bucket scene ofc. the last 2 or 3 books especially have been getting shorter and shorter and i’m just a greedy slut when it comes to this series.
also someone else already mentioned this and i wholeheartedly agree: the fmc being a painter yet there being 0 sexy scenes involving paint??? 🤨
Ah, I fear Rivvan is coming for the top 3 best alien cowboys because my absolutely god this guy was an angel. I cried like the entire book?! These always make me SO emotional.
I am just such a fucking diehard fan of this series & these stunning characters. I cannot put it into words the amount of emotional joy and laughter and heartwarming light these books give me. And the writing is SO good.
The pure innocent aliens who don’t deserve the life they were given but make the best out of everyday and do EVERYTHING they can to feel worthy of these human women. The pure devotion. Absolutely unmatched.
(And finding out a certain special surprise about one of our other characters had me ready to do 1 million cartwheels around my house.)
Them finding eachother and helping eachother through their trauma and just finding peace and happiness together. The sweetest. I NEED MORE FROM THEMMMM. I will NEVER EVER get over these aliens & this world.
This series is like if you took Chestnut Springs & Ice Planet Barbains and combined it into one but like better than I could ever imagine. I highlight nearly every word. Seriously my fav of all time. Always like getting a warm hug. I will be giving every book 5 stars for the world alone because nothing makes me happier in this world.
Thank you to Ursa Dax for this eARC what an absolute dream 😭
3.5 rounded up. These two seemed perfect for eachother.🥰 Tho, I did find it a bit rude to get all hot and heavy when the other men were there to get to know her,I feel like they could've saved that for a more private time or after she had chosen, I guess she was sampling the goods beforehand 🙈 And given all of Rivven's excitement at wanting to be chosen I would've thought there would've been a little more on-page time of him actually being a husband. 🤷♀️
Otherwise, it was still a good story even if it felt lacking for me personally 😂

Rivven was such a sweetie pie and I wanted to keep him forever. He was compassionate and a little grumpy. Shiloh was downtrodden but had a lot of passion inside her. I liked seeing migraine representation and that Rivven also had a disability with his limb loss. They were lovely together, though I would have loved more time for them to fall in love. It felt a bit rushed but still sweet.
Spice: 2/5
Triggers: sexual harassment, poverty, threat of houselessness, grief from death of parent, unjust justice system, migraine episode, PTSD symptoms, past child abuse, loss of both parents as child
This was so sweet 😭🫂. Rivven, my love, he didn't think he was worthy enough to be loved by Shiloh!!!!! 💔😭
He made her skates so that they could do it together!!😭❤️🩹
Favourite quotes;
By the empire, Shiloh,” he gritted out, “you’re the loveliest thing I’ve ever beheld.”
😭
That taking care of you is what I was destined to do. However I could do it. However I could get it. If that means supporting you from afar, then I’m going to blasted do it, Shiloh. Because if I thought for one moment…”If I thought for one moment that I was the thing holding you back from something better…I wouldn’t be able to bear it.”
🛐❤️🩹
It hurt that someone could offer him love, and he had to make sure they meant it first. Like they might really have intended to give it to someone else instead of him.
Sweet Rivven 😭🫂
“I can’t believe the first thing you’ve ever painted is a picture of me.” “What else would I paint?” I asked her, wracking my brains for anything else I would bother to attempt. “You said that love could make art. It might not be art. But…” I gestured at the image. “It’s got my love.”
I cheer every time Dax casually drops hints at other cowboy aliens across the galaxy, because that means there’s more books in this series to come. They are so weird, and I hope they never stop.
Smitten by the Alien Saloon Owner is Book 7 in Ursa Dax’s wackily creative sci-fi romance series Cowboy Colony Mail-Order Brides. In this turn around the [insert sun equivalent], we follow Rivven, a gentlemanly alien saloon owner from Warden Hallum’s province, paired with newcomer Shiloh, who arrives on Zabria Prinar One hoping first for an easier life, and only second (or third… or fourth—she really hasn’t thought that part through) to become a bride.
You know how long-running TV shows, especially those from the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s, have episodes fans label as “filler” or “fluff,” usually as a criticism? This book feels a bit like that, but in the best possible way. There’s no sweeping, overarching conflict driving the plot; instead, the story unfolds through a series of character-focused moments and, of course, romantic development. At this point in the series, that approach actually works here.
I loved settling into Shiloh and Rivven’s relationship and watching their bond grow naturally from friendship into something more. The primary source of tension comes from the workplace mistreatment that pushes Shiloh toward the bride program as a last resort, while any potential awkwardness around meeting other available males is softened by how clearly she and Rivven already care for each other in the time they have together first.
This is a genuinely sweet story. I especially enjoyed seeing both Shiloh and Rivven reconnect with old passions—painting and ice skating—and share those parts of themselves with each other. A lovely, comforting read and a worthy addition to this alien romance series.
Another fun read in the Cowboy Colony series. Rivven and Shiloh were perfect for each other, I loved how different this book was to the others in the series.
I'm absolutely loving our adorable aliens and their wives, I never want this series to end!
Favourite quote: “Xennet, who’d shown up at her wedding with a fistful of wood lice ready to throw upon her head because he’d misunderstood the human wedding tradition involving something called rice. The fact that I’d prepared a tray of ice to throw at her was not at all relevant. Lice were obviously worse.”
This book was sweet in that soft, gentle way that feels like settling into a cozy chair after a long day. Rivven is the kind of quiet, steady alien who makes you instantly relax. He cares for Shiloh with so much patience and kindness that you cannot help but root for him. The migraine care scenes in particular were lovely, and they showed how a simple moment between two characters can feel tender without needing a big grand gesture behind it. Shiloh herself was very relatable as a woman who is burned down to the wick by real life. She wanted rest, safety, and the space to figure out who she is, and the book did a great job showing that part of her journey.
Even with all of that sweetness, I found myself wishing the story had more tension or weight behind the romance. Everything happened quickly, which made parts of the connection feel a bit too instant for my tastes. Rivven is adorable, but I wanted that one big turning point where he stepped outside his comfort zone for Shiloh or faced something that mattered deeply to him. Something dramatic or heartfelt would have elevated their relationship and made the payoff feel more earned. Without that, the book floated along nicely but never fully landed with the emotional punch I was hoping for.
Shiloh choosing between Rivven, Xennet, and Dorn should have created more suspense than it did, but the book heavily leaned toward one pairing early on. There was not much of a dilemma, and that took away some of the fun that comes from watching a choice unfold. I kept waiting for something to complicate the decision or challenge the characters in a meaningful way, but it stayed very light. Cute, yes, but lacking a little of the spark that could have made it stand out.
Even so, the overall vibe was enjoyable, and I can see why readers find comfort in this world. The writing style is pleasant, the alien details are fun without being overwhelming, and Rivven is a sweetheart from start to finish. What really grabbed my attention though was the tease for Warden Hallum’s story. If that ends up being a grump meets sunshine romance with the OBGYN, I will be knocking people out of the way to get to it.

I adore this series of charming alien cowboys and the human women they fall head-over-heels for. That said, this one is not as good as the others in the series. The first few chapters were fantastic, full of emotion. And then?
Sad trombone.
It feels like maybe the author lost steam or found her attention had shifted elsewhere, and she just outlined the rest of the story. At a slim 185 pages, this is more novella than novel. There is essentially no action, I’d be hard-pressed to identify a climax because nothing really happens. There is very little character development for either lead. Little bits of their personalities and backstories brought up in early chapters go nowhere. The fish-out-of-water charm of each character discovering their completely novel new partner’s quirks that was a hallmark of the other books in this series is absent here. There is precious little in the way of affection or emotional connection between the characters, and even the smut reads like it’s been phoned in, and that’s rare for this author. There isn’t even an epilogue here to suggest a HEA.
Mostly, this novel reads like a set up for the next part of the series, and that’s a shame because these were characters that could have shone.
Maybe she didn't want a husband. But by the empire, I would make her a home.
The way these men love is just... ufffff. Rivven takes everything Shiloh says to heart and super seriously. Just asking her why she chose to be part of the Bride program had him going crazy. He knew he loved her and wanted whatever made her happy, even if that meant someone else or another place all together. These are just fun stories full of love and finding your person. I love them all.
I really did truly love this book, I love the characters, etc. However, I felt kind of disconnected from the two main characters and I couldn’t tell you exactly why. I really do love this series though and as always there were so many laugh out loud moments and I did read it in a matter of like five hours, so.
This series is just a fluffy cloud of cotton candy for the soul 🥰 I love it so much. The men are so sweet and funny, I can’t even! And they are just so clueless about women and especially humans 😂
What was that? Do I think «What is kiss» is my favourite alien trope? Yeah, it is. I also love the honorary mention of jamdingos or whatever, and with the added bonus of a tuxeroni or something 😇 the translators aren’t all that accurate, which makes for fun (mis)translations with the aliens.
The women are great too. Strong and funny and sweet. Helpless against these sweet, ridiculous dingdongs.
I loved that there was two kinds of disability rep in this one as well!
The spice was spicing, as usual, but sweet as well. It is very insta lust/love, but ya know what? I don’t hate it. I actually just eat it up. In the back of my mind I’ve just decided there’s a mate bond thing going on, and that’s that 😇
Oh, and I can’t WAIT to get to Xenneth’s book 😂 he’s gonna be hilarious. A hyper, green himbo with lavender hair that’s actually super sweet? Sign me the fuck up ⬆️
I have never before cried during a sex scene. This book is a perfect example of intimacy actually servicing the story. No big action set pieces in this one. It is an achingly sweet and contained romance. This series hasn't missed with me yet. More cowboy alien himbos! There's room for all of them in my heart.
