Our parents warned us about the devils that hide in the dark; they never expected that we’d go looking for them–or that some would be worth falling for.
The Portland Romance Writers invite you to step away from your better judgement and into a world of magic, dark creatures, and deadly desires. In this dark fantasy romance anthology, demons seduce their hunters, gods play games with mortal hearts, vampires fall prey to human desire, and witches cast spells that bind in more ways than one.
Layered with lust, betrayal, and power, these seven short stories will take you to hell and back–literally–for love.
Dark Magic, Dangerous Loves, and the Beauty of Falling Anyway
Bound in Shadows is the kind of anthology that doesn’t just flirt with darkness; it embraces it, pulls you in, and dares you to look away.
Each story feels intentionally chosen, creating a collection that’s rich with atmosphere, longing, and morally gray desire. Demons aren’t just monsters here, gods aren’t benevolent, and love is rarely safe, but that’s exactly what makes this anthology work so well. These stories understand that power, temptation, and vulnerability often exist in the same breath.
What stood out to me most was how personal each story felt. Despite being a short-form collection, the emotional weight lands. The authors don’t rush the connection or rely solely on heat, though there is plenty of it. Instead, they give us characters who are broken, curious, reckless, and brave enough to reach for something dangerous because it feels like truth.
There’s a strong thread of agency running through the anthology. These are characters who choose the dark, choose desire, choose love even when it costs them something. The magic, monsters, and mythology heighten the stakes, but at its core this is a collection about longing, transformation, and the things we’re willing to sacrifice for connection.
If you enjoy dark fantasy romance with sharp edges, seductive danger, and stories that linger long after they end, Bound in Shadows delivers exactly that, and then some.
Power, Defiance, and a Hunger That Can’t Be Tamed
Sea of Blood was one of those stories that immediately dug its claws into me and refused to let go.
Mara’s journey (from acolyte to vampire, from controlled to self-possessed) is raw, brutal, and incredibly satisfying. Her transformation isn’t romanticized or easy; it’s earned through pain, defiance, and a refusal to remain small. I loved that her power wasn’t handed to her. It was taken, claimed, and defended.
Xavier is the kind of character who thrives in moral gray. Dominant, commanding, and dangerous, he exists in constant tension with Mara’s need for autonomy. Their dynamic crackles with intensity, not just because of desire, but because of the push and pull between control and rebellion. Consent, power, and choice are woven tightly into every interaction, making their relationship as compelling as it is volatile.
What really made Sea of Blood stand out was its refusal to soften its edges. This story doesn’t apologize for its darkness. It leans into it, asking hard questions about authority, loyalty, and what freedom truly costs. And through it all, Mara remains the heart of the story: strong, furious, and unapologetically herself.
If you love dark fantasy romance with dominant vampires, defiant heroines, and emotional intensity layered beneath sharp power dynamics, Sea of Blood is absolutely worth reading.
Always be mindful of trigger warnings, what I like you may not.
I’m beyond thrilled that I had the chance to ARC read this book—it was everything I love about dark, emotional, and addictive storytelling wrapped into one unforgettable collection! Each short story managed to capture me completely, drawing me into worlds filled with tension, forced proximity, gothic atmospheres, supernatural allure, and heartbreak that lingered long after the last page. This anthology was perfectly balanced—fast-paced, yet deeply moving—and I can say with confidence that it deserves a full 5/5 stars!
What stood out most was the sheer range of emotions. The stories shifted effortlessly from cute to devastating, from light to hauntingly dark, and from tender to chillingly dangerous. Because they were shorter pieces, the pacing never slowed; every turn held new surprises, and there was never a chance to feel bored—you were pulled along breathlessly from beginning to end.
Some of my personal favorites came from CHRIS WALTERS, HYPATIA RHODES, and VEE R. PAXTON. Their stories were so vivid, so immersive, that I devoured them in one sitting and found myself wishing for entire novels set in their worlds. I also loved the contributions from KATE ENDER, MIRANDA PARKER, DANA SHEA, and KATIE ROSE—each of them infused their writing with yearning, tenderness, and love, yet still wove in enough shadows and heartbreak to keep that deliciously dark edge I crave.
This book isn’t just a collection of stories—it’s an experience. You’ll find yourself transported into realms of dangerous bargains, forbidden kisses, aching embraces, and men who would burn the world to protect the women they love. There’s found family, gothic tension, supernatural twists, and just the right amount of heartbreak to keep the pages heavy with emotion.
I highly recommend this anthology to anyone who loves dark romance, gothic vibes, and stories that balance light with shadows. It’s the perfect reminder that even in the darkest of worlds, love can still blaze bright, defiant, and unforgettable.
I'm so happy to have been given a chance to arc read this book! I loved the short, but interesting, lovely, dark stories that were full of tension, forced proximity, dark gothic vibes, supernaturals and a lot of other wonderful things. I give it 4.5 stars!
I liked how all the stories differed from cute to heartbreaking, dark to sunny vibes, so I was given all the specter of emotions while reading them. Cause they were short ones, they were more fast paced, the action always took sudden turns and you were never bored, cause you just didn't have the time.
I have to say that I especially loved stories written by CHRIS WALTERS, HYPATIA RHODES, VEE R. PAXTON. Maybe I was just in the right mood, but I inhaled them so quick and was hooked so fast I wanted like a whole book about them. And of course I really enjoyed myself while reading other stories by KATE ENDER, MIRANDA PARKER, DANA SHEA, KATIE ROSE. They were full of yearning, tender love, but still filled with a decent amount of darkness, and a sprinkle of heartbreak.
I really encourage you to read this book of wonderful stories, so that for a short while you could be transported to somewhere full of alluring sins, dangerous bargains, warm embraces, never ending love, men who will stand by their women while they burn the world down.
Demons, Gods, Vampires—Oh My (And I Enjoyed Every Moment)
Okay besties, let me just say... "Bound in Shadows" by The Portland Romance Writers (Hypatia Rhodes, Katie Rose, Chris Walters, Dana Shea, Miranda Parker, Vee Paxton, and Kate Ender) is the anthology I didn’t know I needed until it swallowed me whole. This isn’t your fluffy rom-com lineup; it’s dark, delicious, and brimming with temptation. Seven different authors pull you straight into a world where demons flirt like it’s foreplay, gods play chess with mortal hearts, witches weave more than spells, and vampires? Yeah, they’re the ones getting played. Each short story crackles with lust, danger, and betrayal, giving me that “just one more chapter” insomnia I live for. My fave part? Every tale is its own twisted ride but together they’re like a perfectly wicked buffet—you’ll leave wrecked, obsessed, and already begging for more. If your heart beats faster at the promise of dark magic, deadly kisses, and lovers you shouldn’t trust but desperately want to? This anthology was written for you.
