Edited by David Platt, Daniel L. Akin, and Tony Merida, this new commentary series, projected to be 48 volumes, takes a Christ-centered approach to expositing each book of the Bible. Rather than a verse-by-verse approach, the authors have crafted chapters that explain and apply key passages in their assigned Bible books. Readers will learn to see Christ in all aspects of Scripture, and they will be encouraged by the devotional nature of each exposition.
Exalting Jesus in Galatians is written by David Platt & Tony Merida.
DAVID PLATT serves as Lead Pastor at McLean Bible Church in Washington, D.C. These books are fantastic for both deep study and group study. Readable, relatable, and well-written. I would recommend these for both personal and group studies through books of the Bible. I loved Platt’s and Merida’s writing styles here.
I wish this book was longer, felt like most sections could be broken into two pieces if not more. Really helpful though. Great start to my summer/fall of Galatians reading in preparation for a fall series.
Admittedly, both Platt and Merida are better preachers than they are commentary writers. However, this is an adequate resource to come alongside a devotional reading of Galatians. As you would expect, much of the theological weight is carried by other commentary writers who are cited throughout the work and both Platt and Merida shine with their anecdotes and textual applications. The title is "Exalting Jesus in Galatians" and both authors do a superb job in doing so throughout the work!
This commentary is more idea by idea than verse by verse. It's accessible, not just for Seminarians. I would recommend it to anyone who was interested in a straightforward and accessible commentary on Galatians (maybe if they were leading a Bible Study through Galatians, for example). Each chapter ends with a section of questions on that passage.
Good. But not real deep. Pretty light read so it would be a good suggestion for a younger Christian - either age-wise or walk-wise... Good basic explanation of justification by grace through faith, apart from works and the uniqueness/exclusiveness of that beautiful truth to Christianity. I tire of Platt's "radical" schtick, so that may be a factor behind my not-so-rave review, too.
I know this is meant for pastors in sermon - prep but as a layperson I enjoyed it thoroughly and found many insights. It helped me get a big picture view of Galatians while diving into smaller details.
I have read several of these Christ-centered Exposition Commentaries, but this is my favorite so far. I highly recommend it. It shows clearly the meaning of the various passages but also show how we ought to respond.
Incredibly grateful if you’re diving in more about Galatians. The way the author unpacks the truth gives me a richer understanding of why Paul wrote the text. It helped me set my eyes on the cross and take action in my faith.
Over the past few years, I've utilized this series in my preaching and teaching, and I've been blessed beyond measure by it! This volume on Galatians is in a word, Excellent!
