Broken Ashes #6

Forgotten Arcane (Broken Ashes) Book 6

Rate this book
So much has happened, and we don’t know what it all means yet. Our new gifts are going to take some time to understand, and my new magic is behaving about as well as I do.

We thought that we would get at least a week off before we had to deal with anything, but of course, that’s not how it works, and complications start to be thrown at us almost the minute we get home.

Adjusting to having an entirely new team member is going to be difficult, especially since we’re all mad as hell at the way he has been treated and how simple things are making him light up.

I guess any hope of a break after the Choosing was a little bit farfetched anyway.

Review of Books 3-6

Let’s start with the good. The plot is interesting, the characters are fun and the creatures are hilarious.

Now for the not so good. Just like my previous review of the first two books, the grammar, formatting, and the wordiness are still very real issues. This author constantly stops in the middle of a scene to add a new chapter and adds a new POV randomly to say something that’s not needed. When I say not needed I mean it doesn’t advance the story or the character arcs in any way. Also, there is little to no character arc. There’s no growth in them as individuals.

I think my biggest issue is the amount of books. We are six books in what would have to be maybe 12 books to complete the story at the rate the author is going. I think all the current books could have been one book maybe, and that’s a big maybe, two. The synopsis for this current book is extremely misleading. The author ends the books in the middle of a scene. It’s not a cliffhanger it’s a jarring and unexpected stop. These practices make the author seem gimmicky, like they’re just after money and care nothing about the actual story or the readers.

Like I said, the story idea is great and intriguing enough that I want to know the outcome but not enough to come back to this story when the next installment releases NEXT YEAR!!! I wouldn’t mind waiting until next year for a fully fleshed out book but knowing it’s probably gonna be more of the same, nope!

This one was a little klunky and not a lot happened.
By klunky I mean at one point they found an injured wolf and the injured wolf said "when I became a shell of myself to protect myself" or something like that. Not how a normal person would talk, let alone a person that's been extremely abused.
still fun, but if it wasn't part of the bigger series, it would probably have been 2 stars at most.

Great story and characters! But some formatting issues

So I absolutely love all the characters and the storyline/world building is well thought out. My biggest issue is formatting - honestly if the story hadn’t been so interesting I wouldn’t have been able to make it through books 1-3 because of the constant run on sentences, grammatical errors and typos. It’s made me too nervous to try any of the authors other older series too, but I was already hooked with this one so I pushed through. Those have gotten a lottt better but I still don’t understand why it’s double spaced and barely any indentations for paragraphs. Chapters also randomly end when they could’ve easily continued instead of forcing a chapter end in the middle of conversations constantly. Which is similar to the books. While as a reader I love not having to wait as long for new ones, some of these books really could’ve ( and maybe should’ve) been combined for better cohesiveness.

And while normally I love dialogue between characters, because each of these books is short I do find myself sometimes thinking there’s too much in regard to Neith’s random thoughts/tangents. It’s a funny part of her personality but I don’t think we need a comment from each guy every time. I mean for example this book only covered I think 3 or 4 days total because of the sometimes over-detailed explanations/conversations or reiterating of things that occurred already.

These are all my main pet peeves but again, I do like the series just wish it was cleaned up some. Given how many important things are still yet to come it feels like this will end up being a 20 book series by the time it’s done unless it’s suddenly rushed through.

Good

This book picks up from book five, and starts right up where we left off. That means it is imperative that you read the first five books before this one! While book six doesn’t end on a cliffhanger (thank goodness), it does end with a lot of unfinished business, so consider yourself warned.

With Neith and her teammates having won the choosing, they have earned their prize, and get to head home for a well earned rest.
There they have some issues to deal with, some research on those pesky unanswered questions, before it’s time to make the planned visit to Van’s parents in the hopes that they can answer some more of their questions.

While there is still plenty of action in this book, it’s a bit less chaotic than some of the previous books, and is a nice bridge between the before and after of the Choosing.
I felt like this book was very much setting us up for the second half of the series, where hopefully we deal with the Blue evil, and some of the burning questions… like is Kyrous the one Neith met when doing her thing for the Imps? And what to do about Dimitri?

Anyway, this was, as always, an enjoyable and fast paced story, with bit of steam this time, and plenty of action! I look forward to seeing what new abilities the team members show, and to discovering all that Neith can now do!

3/5 Stars – Broken Ashes (Books 1–7)

I say this with love: this series feels like someone traded their IV for a constant stream of energy drinks and just took off running, full throttle. It's high-octane, wildly fast-paced, and somehow manages to get sidetracked by every single possible side quest along the way. The main plot? Occasionally remembered, often misplaced. Think “open-world RPG with too many map markers and zero direction.”

That said, the worldbuilding - especially the variety of species - is what’s kept me engaged. It’s refreshingly weird and imaginative, and I genuinely enjoy that part.

This isn't an “easy-to-follow” read by any stretch, but if you thrive in chaos, you might actually keep up better than you expect. Personally, I’ve read a few of Nikita’s series now, and they all ride that same chaotic energy - like the literary version of a speedrun with no route planning.

Is it flawless? Absolutely not. Is it trying to be? Also no. This isn’t a serious deep-dive harem epic - it’s more like a sandbox game where the characters are too busy doing fetch quests to remember why they started in the first place. And yet… here I am, book 7 downloaded, still along for the ride. Sometimes, fun is enough.

And I would put actual money on the fact that the author plays video games the same way she writes - main quest? Never heard of her. Side quests only, baby.

Hoping for more answers but still enjoying

Sorry but this will be short and sweet, because I’ve been reading since early afternoon and it’s past my bedtime haha. This book is mostly on par with the previous ones of the serious. Fantastic. It’s a little… I wanted to say slow but with Neith everything seems fast paced. I guess it’s a little less “mission intense”. It ties a few things up and leaves a lot of questions, some new and some still lingering. It also hints at a few things I’ve put together from the previous books. Relationships are still slow but there’s some progress which is nice. I think this book will be a nice tie over to the next ones and hope they are more focused and we get somewhere deeper with the main storyline, as I feel like we’re always going off on tangents that keep adding more and more. The biggest flaw is that the next book is projected for a year from now!!! Not fair. Still so much to untangle and discover the meaning of, a lot of relationship ground to cover, and missions to complete so to speak. I hope the next one’s longer and gets us more, but I’ll definitely be reading it when it comes out.

I need the next book now!

I really love this series! The FMC is so quirky and bad a$$ that it’s just fun a really fun read. And the story is really good too.

I will say this particular book in the series is a bit slow in that not much happens in this book, and there are times that the conversations with the group just go on and on a bit too long. Neith’s tangents are so her but because of them the other conversations need to be a little more streamlined and have strong purpose or it can get a bit much reading. This is my reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

But when stuff does happen though it’s great and moves the story along beautifully. I just wish more had happened in this book. And I really hope the next book isn’t the last because there is too much that still needs to happen and if it all happens in one book it’s going to feel rushed and fall flat. Please don’t let that be the case!

All that said, if you like fun crazy quirky characters and stories that feel light even with some heavier elements then you will love this series.

Absolutely fantastic

I really enjoyed this book. I didn’t want to put it down. It did feel shorter than the others tho. Not much happened besides them gaining their death magic from winning the Choosing. They help out the wolf pack near Vans parents compound. They went for a banquet and to learn to cook when the wolf pack next door attacked. They wanted to kill everyone and take Neith captive. Of course Neith and her guys subsided them all and freed the wolves under the ahole alpha. River killed the alpha, after saving the women and children, showed them all he was gentle and not like any kind of alpha they knew of. Since River didn’t want to be their alpha, he gave the spot to the son of the original alpha and Luna of the pack, also making Logan a beta. Cool gifts. Also we find out that Neith is really Rivers true mate. Thanks to Logan blurting out the question if she had a weird mark on her body. The end.

Brilliant

I was so glad to find this book released so I could get stuck in.

We follow on from the choosing and get back to normal (ish) life.
I think we only get a couple of days on from the choosing and in that time I think it's just them talking about powers and what they want to do for work ect...

We do get to go to Van's parents and find out some things. We also get a little action at the end and meet a group of wolves.

I love Nikita's books and both love and hate that I have to wait for the next to be released.

I really thought we were going to find out more about the last 2 members of the team 😕 but other than a little mention, we don't get any closer to those people.

I don't know why I thought this was going to be the last in this series???? But lucky us because it isn't. 😃

Good but slow

this series has been pretty good and does keep my attention while reading. Unfortunately, it is moving along VERY slowly. We're at book 6 allready and barely have anything solved or resolved, let alone one of the primary issues "the blue fu#$%&" The list of things needed looked into or answered, just as Neith says, keeps getting longer. It's like one step forward and three not two steps back. Feels like there's very little progression of plot as it tends to wander just as Neith does. It is extremely frustrating and making it hard to stay invested in the series. Especially since it says the next book won't be until July next year. At this rate, it will take about 20 books to conclude possibly. I'm hoping things continue smoothly, but pick up pace with more focus.

Ugh I just want more 😩

Neith & her guys story just keeps getting better and better.

I mean, yes they keep running into more problems, despite having some questions answered. But it seems like with each question answered, a new one pops up confusing all of them.

I’m so happy we find out more about Neith, what she is & where she comes from. She deserved those answers but I wish we knew more lol

Watching their adventures continue on is quite the journey but makes the story so dang good!

I’m excited to see what happens next for all of them & hopefully they can finally rest soon.

Amazing job!

The story is interesting and the characters are fun but this series is in desperate need of an editor.

The chapter breaks are in awkward places.

The dialogue is wordy, inefficient, and ridiculously repetitive. The characters are constantly verbally agreeing with each other with the same six phrases every other page and it is driving me crazy.

Also, nothing actually happened during this book except in the final few chapters- it was just an info dump.

While the story itself is great, it’s becoming difficult to get through each book. I really think with series could have been 2-3 books so far instead of 6. It makes me wonder if the author is doing it on purpose to make more money…

Forgotten Arcane

Neith and her men pick up where the last book left off, and we get to see what they get as special gifts from the warrior bond. They have so many moving pieces that we are spoon-fed some of the information. Neith and her men are proving that they all can do so much more than they should be able to that when we finally get answers about why I know it will be epic. I need more and can't wait to see what we will learn next about each of them and other characters.

On the fence about this author

I liked the overall storyline however i found several things annoying enough where i probably won't read any of the authors others works. They were:
-A good editor is sorely needed to correct issues such as spelling, grammar and homophone corrections.
-Repeated use of the phrases 'good point', 'fair point' etc. To the 'point' of excess .
-The MMC's we're all very agreeable. Some may find this great but for me, there was no fire or tension.
Other than that, i did enjoy the author's imagination and the trip she took me on.

Left turn anyone?

It was nice to have a break from the stressful pace of the last few books. I’m a bit confused though about the introduction of so many new things instead of advances to the main plot.
I agree with other reviewers that with so much new content it’s hard to imagine that the story will wrap up in one more book.

Fortunately, since book 7 isn’t available yet, this is not a cliffhanger. I will need to be absolutely certain that it concludes the series before I read it.

Anthoner great addition

While I'm sad we didn't get to the confrontation with Demitri and every one is still convinced that the other bond mate is dead, though I don't think he is, it was still a pretty good book. This time we get some smexy time with 2 of the guys, and we get to meet some family. Overall it was a great book and im excited for the next one. That ending was great as well

I always read anything Nikki , she has so many different characters and the FMC are also so unique from her other books. When I read anything Nikki it remind me of a CW show where you just have to stay until the very end. I think this is one of my favorite series from this author. I’m happy all the guy are coming around to Dimitri I bet that’s the smudge more than anything. Also her cliffhangers always make you wish you savored the book a little more. Until next time

I do enjoy this writer and this series is a lot of fun. However, this particular book felt like filler - it finished off the cliffhanger from the last book, then a lot, A LOT, of talk talk talk, wolf shifter problem, fixed, the end. Enjoyed the book, it felt like four chapters, I read it in an hour.

AWESOME as always!!!

Neith and her men once again have action and adventure. And not what you expect. We FINALLY have a few questions answered. And of course, a few more raised. Also, the foreshadowing that happens is fun. The only thing I didn't like was that it ended way too soon. ;)

WOMAN

Woman. I swear between you and KG y'all are the queens of cliffhangers. Y'all should get a reward

So for some spoilers: We do get some answers in this one But we also have gotten a lot more questions. I can't wait to see what happens in the next one especially with the teaser if you read the synopsis for book 7. Also seriously though the cliffhanger

Amazing book!

The only down side is how short these books are. Neiths story is captivating, endearing, funny, and just a fun time all around. This book feels more like a breather after the chaos and adventure of the last two and i love it! Great work! Cannot wait for the next book!

Cute

This was not a complete book, more like a novelette than book 6 in a series. It's cute but from the beginning to the end nothing major happened to move the series forward - just a side quest and more questions.

I was looking forward to this book since there are potentially 3 big bads but none are directly interacted with.

Awwwwww

So book 5s ending was explosive and book 6 jumps straight back into it.
Downtime? Whats that? Fates not going to let something as simple as a cooking lesson and family gathering be peaceful and rejuvenating
And that ending just... beautiful 😍
