He’d never known anyone with as much baggage as him until she came in with five suitcases, a broken heart, and a big secret that could change everything.
Stevie Winters is back at Driscoll after a semester hiatus with no friends, no boyfriend, and a new roommate: Levi Clarke, a sweet yet brooding musician. Though eager to move on from her past, Stevie harbors a secret she can’t hide from her new roommate much longer. When Levi invites her out one night, everything changes. Suddenly, they grow closer, but underneath his soft exterior lies something dark and exciting. Stevie wants to learn more about him, and when she does, the line between roommates and something more becomes blurry.
Levi Clarke has four best friends, a good job, and a major that allows him to pursue music. But what he’s missing is someone to split his rent. Scared to lose his place, he says yes to a student desperately needing housing. Levi doesn’t know what to expect, but it isn’t a girl with seventy-style clothing and a sweet smile. One night, Levi learns about a secret his roommate has been hiding, leading him to help Stevie overcome her past by completing her semester bucket list. But through this adventure, other secrets come to light. Will Stevie’s discoveries scare her, or will she believe Levi’s promises?
I was born and raised in NYC and Bogotá, Colombia. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic, and after watching dozens of 2000s rom-coms and listening to the best love songs of all time, I was given a very popular book series on my seventeenth birthday that changed my life forever.
After eight years of living in other author’s worlds; I created my own. In the fall of 2022, I snatched my laptop and outlined my debut novel. It was filled with everything I loved: steam, romance, hate, and a happily ever after. It was at that moment I knew that this was what I wanted to do.
When I’m not writing, I can be found reading (shocker, I know), cooking, dancing, on a road trip, or out at the movies.
Thank you to author Nina Rey for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is book 2 in the Driscoll U Diaries series, and it centers on college students Levi and Stevie. Stevie is fresh off a huge betrayal and is looking for an off-campus roommate. She ends up living with Levi and is immediately attracted to him even though she thinks he's gay. (He's not, and comes out to her as bi-sexual, and of course he's attracted to her as well.) Levi felt comfortable enough to share such a big part of his life with Stevie because she grew up with two Moms and a gay Dad. (They have an interesting family dynamic.) We get huge chunks of Levi's backstory and heartbreak throughout, as we watch him develop real feelings for Stevie amidst her struggles with epilepsy.
The story was very well written, and I became quite invested in not just our MCs, but in the side characters as well. (Here's to hoping Jake and Em get a book.)
I stayed up reading this book every night! I loved the characters and the story. The plot twist and the drama. It all came together perfectly. I loved their love and can’t wait to read more by this author!

I am honored to be a part of the ARC readers of this book. I went in thinking this was going to be like every other small town romance but this is so much more. Stevie & Levi are a match made in heaven and hotter than hell.
Thank you Nina for an advanced copy of The Best Promise! She got me hooked because of the no 3rd act breakup 😝 It's very satisfying to read a book without that breakup scene sometimes 😌

🏍️my thoughts: The Best Promise is the second installment in the Driscoll U series, but it was the first one I read. Thankfully these series are interconnected standalone books so each plot ends with each book, but you do tend to meet some of the characters from the last book and meet some for the next book. It's honestly my favorite type of series 🤌🏻
I think that my favorite thing about this book is how accepting Levi and Stevie are of each other and helps the other to heal and grow while encouraging the self-healing and self-growth. For example, Levi does not pry into Stevie's medical condition which he is very vaguely aware of until Stevie experiences the beginning of symptoms. Stevie also does the same for Levi when he informs her that he is bisexual, not gay, and does not force him to explain more even when their relationship progresses. Though Levi does cross the boundaries a bit later on, it's more so his protectiveness of her that causes it and is only really targeted to her cheater of an ex boyfriend.
While there were a few things that I felt that weren't expanded on or a bit unnecessary, this book was still really good overall. I especially liked the epilepsy representation as well as the LGBT+ representations. Though most of what I said should be more normalized and bare minimum at this point, it still pleases my heart when there's awareness.
I definitely recommend this book for those who love mutual healing, female empowerment, a pierced MMC 🫦, and great plot with equally great s€x scenes.
A big thanks to Nina Rey for providing me with an ARC. This was so good I am now not only sleep deprived, but behind on cleaning, because I literally could not put the book down.

Review: The Best Promise is technically book two in Nina Ray’s series, but it reads perfectly as a standalone. I didn’t read the first one and never felt confused, though I enjoyed this so much that I plan to go back and read the first one!
The story follows Stevie Winters, who returns to Driscoll after a semester break. She moves in with a stranger from her college: Levi Clarke, a musician who’s just trying to keep his apartment. From their first awkwardly funny meeting, I knew I was in for a character-driven story with heart. I loved following Stevie on her journey of self-discovery after both a health scare and a breakup. Levi and his group of friends fully welcome her into their world, helping Stevie rediscover who she is at her core.
One thing I loved right away is how The Best Promise starts fast. The prologue and first chapter hook you immediately; there’s no slow buildup, just an easy flow into the story. The book also has major Gilmore Girls energy. The small-town charm, college setting, witty banter, and constant pop-culture and music references give it a nostalgic warmth.
If I had to have one critique, it’s that the romantic relationship felt rushed at the end, but the story actually leans into that by acknowledging how fast it all happens while still making their connection believable. There’s something sweet about how both of them recognize that, even if it’s quick, it feels right.
Overall, The Best Promise is a heartfelt, spicy-but-soft romance about finding belonging again after heartbreak and health scares. It balances humor, heart, and heat beautifully. Fans of small-town or college romances, Gilmore Girls, and emotionally vulnerable characters will love it.
Thank you, Nina Rey, for providing me with this ARC🤍🪻
The Best Promise is a standalone in an interconnected series. It reads very well by itself, and I was never confused or lost. I didn’t read the first book, but after finishing this one, I’m definitely going back and starting it!
This story follows Stevie Winters, who returns to Driscoll University after some unfortunate events that occur over break. Levi Clarke, a too humble musician, just so happens to be in search for a new roommate.
The first thing I noticed with this book, is that the prologue sucked me in instantly, as well as the first chapter. Usually it takes a bit for a book to get going, but the writing is great, and I was invested from the very beginning.
I tend to gravitate towards stories that are character driven, rather than stories based around specific plots, and that’s exactly what this story was. The characters in this book are so well written, and so different from one another. I was so impressed with how much personality the side characters had as well. I loved every minute of it.
The romance between Stevie and Levi was so fresh and steady paced. I think the reason why it worked, and happened so fast towards the end, was because of the steady buildup throughout the book. The angst was everything!
At its core, this book is about self discovery, acceptance, and love. I would recommend this book to anyone. I honestly loved this read a lot!

The Best Promise was a fun read with some great representation; I really appreciated how it handled both LGBTQ+ identity and epilepsy with care. The characters were likable, and I enjoyed the mix of small-town charm and college life. That said, the pacing felt a bit uneven to me; the time jumps between events and the speed of the relationship development made parts of the story feel rushed. Still, it’s a sweet, heartfelt romance with a lot of potential, and fans of fast paced, character driven stories will enjoy it.
"Once someone treats you like anything less than you deserve, closure isn't necessary. That's something you need to find within yourself. Looking for it in someone who never loved you properly is useless."
This book was really good! I had a fun time getting to know our FMC, Stevie and MMC, Levi.
Stevie enters Levi’s life when she has to quickly find a new roommate after leaving her ex boyfriend for treating her poorly. What she didn’t expect when getting to know Levi was the amazing friends that came with him. I’m a sucker for found family so I enjoyed getting to know their friend group a lot.
This read has epilepsy representation, which is something I’ve never learned much about. It was interesting getting to know more about the type of epilepsy people have to deal with in their lives. I appreciated this element of the book so I could be more aware of people like Stevie if I ever meet someone like her.
I also LOVE the journey Stevie allowed herself to go on after her breakup. I saw myself relating to a lot of her realizations and feelings throughout the story. It was amazing seeing Stevie push herself on her own (with the appreciated help of her friends at times) to rediscover who she is as an individual.
I’m excited to read more by Nina Rey. Thank you so much for this ARC in exchange for my honest review! 💖

First off, thank you, Nina, for letting me be part of your ARC team and read The Best Promise ahead of release!
I absolutely loved Stevie and Levi! Their story was heartfelt, swoony, and such a great addition to the Driscoll U universe. 💜
Stevie Winters is learning to navigate life with epilepsy, a breakup, and a new roommate. Levi Clarke, cautious about who he lets in because of his past, doesn’t expect to fall for his new roommate—aka “Bambi.”
What starts as friendship slowly turns into trust, comfort, and undeniable chemistry. I loved how Nina handled Levi’s sexuality and Stevie’s medical journey with care, and the found family vibes were chef’s kiss.
If you’re interested in a slow burn with roommates to lovers with found family vibes, and that perfect dose of banter and spice 🌶️, this is for you.

This book held so much. And I absolutely loved it for it. Stevie goes back to college after a hiatus but is looking to live off campus. Enter Levi. She moves in with him, finds she’s attracted to him, but assumes he’s gay. And he gives out an amazing amount of trust and tells her that he’s Bi. I say an amazing amount because I know hard it is for some to discuss things at times because they never know how a person may react. So I loved that he trusted and felt comfortable enough to tell her. And she trusts him enough to let him know she has epilepsy. So these two characters just went so deep for me and washed themselves right into my heart. And of course he was attracted to her too! But this book just bright so many elements Ava so much trust, love, comfort. I thoroughly enjoyed this. And this is the first time I’m reading this author. Funny thing is, I have the first book on my shelf and I have never read it! lol so I’ll definitely be grabbing it and reading it. Thank you for allowing me to read this as an ARC. I truly enjoyed it ❤️

Stevie is probably one of my favorite characters! Despite suffering from health issues and dealing with the aftermath of her ex boyfriend and friend betraying her, she remains strong and determined to live her life.
The slow burn of it all was perfectly paced and I couldn’t wait for Stevie and Levi to give into their attraction to each other!
I was also obsessed with Levi’s friend group. Found family is one of my absolute favorite tropes and I couldn’t get over how welcoming and supportive his friends were towards Stevie.

This college romance is the second standalone book in the interconnected series! The Best Promise follows our FMC, Stevie Winters, and our MMC, Levi Clarke. Stevie and Levi become roommates and gradually connect and establish a bond through acceptance and self-growth. The entire book is a steady build-up of angst and chemistry. Each character is unique with a compelling background and storyline.
Personally, I loved the representation for Epilepsy. It was also represented amazingly, contrary to the common thoughts that epilepsy is simply just caused by flashing lights. Nina Rey did an excellent job at researching and writing the health issues that arise with epilepsy and the concerns for a loved one/friend who has it!
Rating: 4.5/5 I love a roommates-to-lovers story, and Nina Rey’s The Best Promise didn’t just give those feel-good moments. There were plenty of ups and downs along with the tension. There were the “will they and won’t they, should they, did they”—and angsty things along the way. What really did it for me was the build-up to Stevie and Levi’s friendship, which first led them to trust one another. Their ability to have that unique level of trust helped build that initial foundation. They were able to share significant pieces of each other that they never shared with others, especially Levi.
I also loved the core group of friends and how supportive they were. The Best Promise is a slow burn, but once it kicks in, things heat up quite a bit. I enjoyed the story, and I’ll be hopping back to Book 1, since I didn’t read this one in order.
Thank you to Torch Lit Ink and Author Nina Rey for the gifted e-copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
back to driscoll U! i really enjoyed this second installment in the series. i loved seeing so much more of levi, my favorite of the friend group from book one! the author perfectly intertwined all the characters from the first book, giving them more depth and making me love them even more!
and i loved getting to meet my girl stevie. i was rooting for her from the very beginning, so it warmed my heart how easily she was welcomed into the friend group. i thought the author did an amazing job showcasing stevie’s struggles with her epilepsy. it definitely had me holding my breath at times, but it was also very informative and i love that it could be given a voice in this way.
it was beautiful seeing levi and stevie’s relationship develop. the mutual healing!!! i loved it so much. and the spice! 🥵 i need a man like levi in my life. i loved revisiting this world, and i can’t wait for book 3!
This was everything!!! I have been waiting for Levi for so long and this man did not disappoint!! I am so in love with both of them honestly. Stevie was one bad ass women. She didn’t not let her condition stop her, if anything it drove her to want to do more. Levi had his own demons he was fighting with but he just wanted to be a good friend to Stevie. Their chemistry was undeniable and you could feel it off page. He just wanted to support her in anyway he could and same for her as well. Stevie was the calm Levi needed when his brain just wouldn’t stop. The plot, the spice & the character development were all on point. Nina can do no wrong in my eyes. I loved getting to see the entire gang from book 1 & the laughs they gave me. I absolutely love this Driscoll world and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
First let me say having early access to this book was an amazing opportunity! I want to say this book is truly a beautiful piece showing all of the sides of chronic illness, mental illness, and true understanding of one another. Even in the heights of misunderstanding they stood by one another and all I have to say is if you’re looking for a kinky guy to get you hooked ;). This book boyfriend is the one! And he believes in aftercare??? GASP! I was brought to tears countless times. If you were ever the girl who settled with a guy and realized too late, and then ended up with your dream man later learning what it’s like to be properly loved this will make you feel unbelievably seen and heard!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
My only complaint about this book is the pacing, at times it feels off. There’s some things skipped that I really wish hadn’t been, and some parts that just felt rushed.
Everything else was absolutely fantastic, the characters were well written, well developed and you could really feel them and their relationship coming alive on the page. Their struggles, their health problems, everything felt realistic, and was (within my limited grasp on some subjects, and lack of knowledge) depicted well.
Their relationship was built on trust, friendship, understanding and good intentions. I really loved how the MC’s built each other up, supported and helped each other through their struggles.
I also loved the friend group! If you’re looking for a book the covers heavy topics well, and still provides all the spice and feelings look no further!
I was so honored to have Beta read this. I read it at a time where I so related to Stevie. Everything she was going through, I could relate with. Oh man did Levi say all the right things! Did I cry? Yes, I did. Did I find my new favorite quote? Yes, I did. Am I obsessed with Levi? HELL YES! You also get insight into epilepsy, which I found to be amazing. I love when a book brings attention to what others may not know about.
I know I cannot wait for the next book because this series is so absolutely amazing, and I cannot wait for the rest of the gang’s story.
Thank you to the author/publisher for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
CW(provided by the author, including but not limited to): explicit sexual content, mild violence, profanity, infidelity (not between the main characters), seizures, mentions of homophobia and biphobia, talk of mental illness, mentions of body shaming, and drink spiking
First of all: love a book with a playlist!
The Best Promise is fun, sexy, and incredibly sweet. I haven't read the first book(though I want to, now), but that doesn't really cause any issue with reading Levi & Stevie's story at all. I laughed out loud(startling my dog) several times and had a great time. Can't wait for more!
Thank you so much Nina Rey for giving me an ARC of The Best Promise!
I absolutely LOVED the MCs in this one! Levi & Stevie were so adorable and I wish there was moreee!! I thought the plot was great though I felt like the ending was a little rushed and missed some details. Though, I will say I enjoyed the second book in the series way more than the first (the first was still amazing). It was so hard for me to put this down, especially once the spice started... and there was a LOT of it! I will definitely be reading more of Nina Rey's books and I hope there is a third book to come in the Driscoll U Diaries Series.🤞(praying for a story about Jake & Em)
I’m going to be honest, I did not like this book in the beginning. The characters and their interactions felt weird to me. It just wasn’t clicking. But I decided to keep reading, and I’m so glad I did.
This is the second book in a series but can be read as a standalone. The story follows Stevie and Levi, who end up as roommates. They have an undeniable connection, but it’s not love at first sight, it’s a slow, steady build of tension. Both characters have been through their own struggles, and watching them heal through each other is truly beautiful.
Let’s not forget the physical connection either. I read a lot of romance, and let me tell you, the spice was some of the best I’ve ever read. Chef’s kiss.
Now, we can’t overlook the side characters. Em, Jake, and Kami are hilarious. I wish I was in their Scooby Gang group chat! They were such a bright spot in the book. Their love for Levi runs deep, and the way they welcomed Stevie and grew to love her too was heartwarming. They were even ready to fight for her, which I adored.
That’s something I really love about this book: the loyalty and protectiveness. Em and Kami, though small, were ready to charge into battle if needed. And Cam (who’s with Kami and was featured in the first book) was the perfect balance, letting Kami go off the rails while quietly protecting her.
Speaking of protectiveness, let’s talk about Levi and Stevie. Their jealousy and possessiveness were the hot kind, the kind that makes you grin like an idiot and talk to the book (which I did in fact do). The tension from those moments? So good I was speechless.
Stevie said it best:
“His smile disappears, replaced with jealousy and nerves. The jealousy thing isn’t entirely new, but it never counted with Andrew. My ex is an ass, and it always felt like he was protecting me rather than being jealous. This time it’s anger and envy. It’s kinda hot.”
This book is such a fun, spicy read, but it also tackles mature themes and heartfelt emotions. Honestly, I kind of wish Nina Rey and I could be friends because I need the kind of advice she writes into her books. I fell in love with these characters and can’t wait to go back and read Cam and Kami’s story, and every book that comes next.
I’m so thankful to have received an ARC of this story. I’ll leave you with one last beautiful quote that I think will become a favorite highlight:
“Falling out of love is hard, mourning that loss is even more difficult. But not giving in to despair and instead finding yourself—the one who existed before he came into your life, before he deceived you—is the most laborious part of the journey. Once it’s done, you’ll be your best self, and there’s no better reward than that.”
♥ “I want you to take control. I’m usually able to keep mine, but not around you.” ♫
♫♥♫---ARC Review---♥♫♥
Even though this is book two in the series, it works perfectly as an interconnected standalone; I had no problem following along without having read book one. What surprised me most was just how much heart and depth this contemporary college romance had. Rey weaves together representation, healing, suspense, drama, and spice, all wrapped up in a beautiful slow burn that felt incredibly natural. Given both Levi and Stevie’s pasts, a faster burn would’ve cheapened their connection, but the slow build of tension and angst was so well-paced that by the time things finally boiled over, I was practically screaming for it to happen.
♥ “Look at me. Whose good girl do you want to be?” ♫
♫ “Yours. I want to be yours. I am yours.” ♥
The representation throughout this story was also really well done. From the thoughtful and realistic depiction of epilepsy to the meaningful LGBTQIA+ representation, Rey handled both topics with sensitivity and care. I especially loved the unwavering acceptance the main characters found in each other: not just tolerance or attraction, but a complete, unconditional understanding. Stevie respected Levi’s past without judgment or pressure, and Levi supported Stevie without being overprotective or stripping her of her autonomy. That mutual understanding and patience made their relationship so genuine and refreshing.
♥ “Never talk about marrying my future wife again…She’s my first & last. There’s no one else.” ♫
The supporting friend group brought warmth and humor to the story (though sometimes they did feel a bit overbearing), and the book even had some hilarious moments; the cop scene had me laughing so hard my dog gave me side-eye. If I had one small critique, it’s that the ending felt a bit rushed compared to the rest of the book’s pacing, but the characters’ own awareness of it made it feel intentional rather than jarring. Overall, this was such a heartfelt, funny, and emotionally rich romance about love, acceptance, and finding peace in the most unexpected places.

I just adore the Driscoll University books! The Best Promise can be read as a standalone but I just love this group of friends so much that I do recommend reading book 1! This time around, our MMC is Levi! I really liked Levi in book one so imagine my pleasant surprise that we were going to get his story! (I'm still rooting for a Jake/Em book lol).
Stevie's world has been turned upside down the last year and a half. She was diagnosed with epilepsy, found her boyfriend cheating on her, and she's slightly behind in her college credits now. She finds a last minute roommate before the semester begins and lo and behold it's Levi! Only, according to Stevie's moms, Levi is gay, so rooming with him will be super chill. What they don't know is Levi is bisexual, and Stevie and her blueberry pancakes may just be what Levi is craving.
I really did love both MCs this book. What I loved about Stevie is she's so relatable! She gets super nervous being in front of an audience, she finds it hard to make friends, she has her own unique style, and she's not letting her condition rule her life. Yes, she knows to be cautious about it and avoid triggers, but she doesn't live in fear. She may not see it in the beginning, but she's one heck of a strong individual and I'd love to be her friend! I enjoyed watching her come out of her shell as she surrounded herself with this core friend group- because they truly cared about her and loved her.
Levi, I'm not surprised I loved you. As soon as I realized you were the MMC I was excited! Levi sees the beauty in all souls but he does carry trauma and hurt from loving the wrong individual in the past. I also think so many people can related to this. It's a trauma he's carried for years and until the right person came along to help him heal, he would have continued to be haunted by it. I also love how when Stevie and her mom's told Levi about Stevie's condition, that he didn't freak out. He immediately accepted it and promised to be there for her if a seizure ever happened. Right out of the gate, he was protective and supportive. Never once did he ever make Stevie feel she needed to slow down or feel less than. I loved this about him!
Overall, it was a great, sweet, beautiful love story between two searching individuals. I just can't wait to see this group of friends again!
Thanks to the author for the ARC! The Best Promise by Nina Rey is one of those books that quietly gives you everything you want in an adult contemporary romance — a charming college-town setting, found family, a kind love interest, and just the right amount of spice and sincerity.
The story follows Stevie, who’s navigating a pretty transformative year. She’s still reeling from a medical diagnosis that’s forced her to reevaluate how she lives, studies, and loves, on the heels of finding out her boyfriend cheating on her. Now, she's moving in with Levi, her new roommate in what becomes a semester full of growth, friendship, late-night banter, and slow-burn connection.
Levi and Stevie are characters you root for, and love. Stevie's personal growth, from trying new things to seeing her apprehensions about people but still rebuilding her trust around new people was heartwarming to read.
The writing is also funny, making this a breezy read I finished in a single day.
What stood out to me most was how Rey handles chronic illness representation. Stevie’s journey after her diagnosis is portrayed with nuance — it’s not about “overcoming” or being “cured,” but about adjusting, relearning, and reclaiming control. The book explores those awkward, deeply human questions: how much do you share with people around you? how do you assert agency when you’re forced to make lifestyle changes that might set you apart socially? It felt real, refreshing, and empathetically written. There's also insight into how having a great support system can be life-changing.
Beyond that, the pacing is tight, the writing has great momentum, and the secondary cast adds a nice layer of warmth and humour. You can tell Rey enjoys writing about creative people — the music and theatre backdrop gives the whole thing a lively, expressive energy.
If I had small quibbles: the subplot involving the ex felt a bit predictable, and the final twist with Tiffany arrived too suddenly for my liking. I would have loved a bit more foreshadowing. But those bumps don’t take away from the emotional authenticity of Levi and Stevie’s story. Their communication, their choices, the why behind them, all of it feels grounded and true to who they are.
If you like the usual tropes of found family, caretaking, checking off a list, etc this is a fun and very steamy read.
Stevie Winters is heading back to Driscoll University, only she doesn’t have a place to live. Good thing Levi Clarke was looking for a roommate. Stevie has no friends, no boyfriend, and a medical condition. Levi has four best friends, a good job, and needs a roommate fast. He finds Stevie online and she moves in with him. Both keep pieces of themselves back for a bit, but eventually they open up to one another. Attracted to each other, the more time the spend together, the harder it is to ignore that attraction. But once they find out each others’ secrets and open up about who they are, will either of them run?
This is the second book in the Driscoll U series. I did not read the first and did not feel like I was missing out on anything. In this college romance, one of the bigger themes of this book is mutual healing. As Stevie and Levi get to know each other and get to know about each others’ pasts, they take the time that is needed to help heal themselves and each other. It was really kind of awesome.
This felt a little slow burnish to me. It was almost a will they, won’t they situation at first. Though it was nice to see them getting to know each other and being friends first. They had some good banter and a lot of chemistry. Then we move to the next phase of the book where the spice comes in. There is a LOT of praise kink; for me it was overdone. Also, at that point, it felt like every other page or every chapter was just spice. I almost forgot they had real feelings for each other. Then it all felt very similar every time I read it. I think some of it could have been cut out.
I loved how much Levi supported Stevie in multiple ways. She wanted to try new things such as signing in public and auditioning for the college musical, he helped her with that. She wanted a new style, he helped facilitate that. When her ex showed up at the bar they were hanging out, he stood up for her and protected her. It was really beautiful to read. I could have read more of this, and seen more support from Stevie towards Levi. She did support him, but it didn’t feel balanced.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read! I highly suggest you check it out, especially if you like spicy romances!
"The Best Promise” by Nina Rey ARC Review ️(4.75 stars)
~~~“Will you shut up so I can tell you that I love you, too?”~~~
I am an avid fan of roommates-to-lovers, and Nina did an amazing job and absolutely blew me out of the water. What I enjoyed the most was the community of people Levi and Stevie surround themselves with. All their friends are supportive of their relationship and quickly accept Stevie into their friend group. I can't wait to read more about their found family.
Stevie is on a self-discovery and healing journey after returning from her semester-long break. After suffering seizures, discovering she has epilepsy, and finding out her boyfriend was cheating on her (what a series of events), she moves in with Levi at the last minute. Little did they know, this would be the best decision both of them would ever make.
Levi is also on a personal healing story, after a traumatic relationship he was in during high school, he has only started to truly recover around the time he meets Stevie. She helps him to see how strong he is and how much he deserves to be in a loyal and loving relationship. And the same can be said for Levi towards Stevie. He is there every step of the way, encouraging her through her new venture of becoming a musical theater performer.
Never once did Stevie or Levi try to push the other too far with their own personal struggles or judge each other for their difference. I will never get over how much I laughed when Stevie found out Levi was Bi, and she just ran to her room from embarrassment from just assuming he was gay.
For me, it took a few chapters for the characters to really click, but once they did, I was LOCKED IN! I read almost the entirety of this book in a 4 hour period, most of which was on a plane. This book did not disappoint, and I can't wait to read the next two as they come out.
Thank you to Nina Rey for an eARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!
This was such a cute book! I loved Stevie's and Levi's relationship.
Stevie definitely changed throught the book and I loved seeing her "heal" 😍
Levi changed too and was the perfect match for Stevie.
I will say the book felt rushed at the end and was left with some questions and no answers. The book did have some spice too and was written pretty well.
I still definitely recommend this book!
📚BLURB📚 He’d never known anyone with as much baggage as him until she came in with five suitcases, a broken heart, and a big secret that could change everything.
Stevie Winters is back at Driscoll after a semester hiatus with no friends, no boyfriend, and a new roommate: Levi Clarke, a sweet yet brooding musician. Though eager to move on from her past, Stevie harbors a secret she can’t hide from her new roommate much longer. When Levi invites her out one night, everything changes. Suddenly, they grow closer, but underneath his soft exterior lies something dark and exciting. Stevie wants to learn more about him, and when she does, the line between roommates and something more becomes blurry.
Levi Clarke has four best friends, a good job, and a major that allows him to pursue music. But what he’s missing is someone to split his rent. Scared to lose his place, he says yes to a student desperately needing housing. Levi doesn’t know what to expect, but it isn’t a girl with seventy-style clothing and a sweet smile. One night, Levi learns about a secret his roommate has been hiding, leading him to help Stevie overcome her past by completing her semester bucket list. But through this adventure, other secrets come to light. Will Stevie’s discoveries scare her, or will she believe Levi’s promises?
Huge shoutout to Nina Rey & TorchLit for the ARC. I think I screamed when I got the email because I loooooved The Best Mistake. And guess what? I LOVED THIS ONE, TOO!! 💜
Levi & Stevie are it for me. Their instant friendship and connection were everything. There were definitely times I wanted to grab Levi by the shoulders and tell him to speak up, but it was all worth the wait in the end. I'm a sucker for a romance like theirs.
Levi is this sweet, yet overprotective musician that often gets in his own way due to his past. Watching him grow and move on from his past was so so so nice. He truly was fun to read, both his POV and just Stevie's POV. Nina is such a fantastic storyteller.
Stevie - my 70's icon!! Learning to love herself was truly so beautiful to read. I love the friendships in this series and I'm glad that Stevie gets to experience true love, friendship, and just being comfortable overall. Just absolutely loved watching her grow just as much as Levi.
One of my favorite things that Nina Rey has done in both books is using music. I love when an author has a playlist and I extra love when they tell us what song is playing in that particular moment especially considering Levi & Stevie are musicians. It was nice to see what they're listening to, dancing to, and singing along with; it's a chance to put yourself more into the scene.
I love the representation we get in this book as well. As a bisexual individual myself, it's always nice to see it represented well in media. And, of course, I'm always happy to read books written by a fellow Gilmore girls fan. Cannot wait for the next one and I have a feeling I know who it'll be about 👀
This book is the second installment in the Driscoll U series. They are all stand-alone books, but the characters show up throughout the series. Thank you to the author and to Luna Lit for the gifted copy.
The story centers on Stevie Winters, who returns to Driscoll after a semester break and ends up moving in with Levi Clarke, a musician just trying to hold onto his apartment. From their first awkward (and funny) encounter, I knew this was going to be a character‑driven story with a lot of heart. Watching Stevie navigate self‑discovery after a health scare and breakup was so engaging, and Levi—along with his circle of friends—welcomes her in a way that helps her reconnect with herself.
One thing I really appreciated is how quickly the book gets going. The prologue and opening chapter hook you right away, with no slow buildup. And the vibe? Total Gilmore Girls energy. Between the small‑town charm, college backdrop, witty banter, and constant pop‑culture/music references, it has that cozy, nostalgic feel.
My only critique is that the romance felt a little rushed toward the end. But the book actually acknowledges that, which made it believable in its own way. There’s something sweet about both characters recognizing that—even if it’s fast—it feels right.
Overall, The Best Promise is a heartfelt, spicy‑but‑soft romance about finding belonging after heartbreak and health scares. It blends humor, emotion, and heat in a way that feels balanced and genuine. If you’re into small‑town or college romances, Gilmore Girls vibes, and emotionally vulnerable characters, this one’s for you.
The Best Promise by Nina Rey is a tender, slow-burn roommates-to-lovers romance that hooks you from the moment Stevie’s world comes crashing down. After catching her boyfriend cheating, Stevie is heartbroken, raw, and desperate for distance—from her past, from her family’s expectations, and from the pieces of herself she’s not ready to share. Her escape leads her straight into the orbit of Levi, the laid-back musician with a soft heart, a warm home, and a friend group that feels more like a found family.
Moving in with Levi is supposed to be easy. Simple. Safe. But Nina Rey quickly shows that nothing is simple when two people with unspoken chemistry are sharing walls, late-night conversations, and stolen glances. Stevie is guarded, carrying a secret she refuses to let slip, and determined to keep her heart locked down. Levi, meanwhile, is steady and patient—the kind of quietly magnetic hero who doesn’t push, but opens the door just enough that you want Stevie to walk through it.
His chaotic, lovable group of friends adds charm and depth to the story, pulling Stevie into a world where she’s seen, valued, and—slowly—understood. Watching her soften, reconnect with herself, and find belonging again is one of the book’s sweetest arcs.
But where the story truly shines is in Stevie and Levi’s evolving chemistry. It builds in the small moments: shared meals, inside jokes, soft confessions, and the kind of awareness that buzzes beneath every interaction. And when Stevie decides she’s ready to face her fears and tackle the items on her long-ignored wish list, she turns to the one person she is starting to trust—Levi. Their adventures together become a journey of healing, courage, and rediscovering joy.
