Love on the High Seas #1

Tempting the Pirate

Rate this book
Charity Goswick thinks she is escaping an arranged marriage to a brute when she slips onto a ship unnoticed. Little does she realize that this is no honorable vessel of the King's Navy—it is a pirate ship. It's just a matter of time before she is discovered by a handsome rake of a pirate, who locks her in his cabin. And while she should be scared, her captor sparks the most unladylike feelings within her…

James Lamont is on the ship for one reason, and one reason only: to track down his brother. However, his spirited little stowaway certainly affords plenty of distraction with her many (failed) attempts to escape. And each time, the unspoken—and unbidden—passion between them grows stronger. But as violence and danger mount on the high seas, Charity will have to put all of her trust in the most untrustworthy of men... the arrogant pirate who just might steal her heart.

I have always liked stories about adventures at sea. Pirates have fascinated me since I read "Peter Pan", a long time ago. So it is no surprise that I loved this book. It is quite interesting. And most importantly I liked the fact that in this story pirates are the villain, as they should be, not that I mind Pirate heroes.. ;) Another point which goes in favour of this book was the way it began.... a mysterious woman running from something or someone. I like it when there is some mystery involved, especially in the start. That helps engage my interest. The characters are all good, quite unpredictable. I loved the way they kept me second guessing everything. Plot is nothing exceptional but definitely well executed. I found it interesting and entertaining tale of misfortunes and adventures of Charity and James.

P.S. I'd like to thank the publisher for a complementary copy.

Looking for a swash buckling adventure with a spunky heroine and a reluctant hero, check out Tempting the Pirate.

Charity Goswick narrowly escapes what is sure to be a brutal life married to a despicable man only to land herself onto a pirate ship. Talk about falling from the frying pan into the fire.

James Lamont is searching for his missing brother, his brother's ship was taken by pirates. James' search leads him to a ship full of pirates and one very unexpected stow-away.

James' intentions are mostly honorable in trying to keep his “stow-away” safe, but Charity fights his help every bit of the way.

This was a delightful read. Charity has a man hating mentality while James is stuck with a highly protective nature.

Simply entertaining, Tempting the Pirate is also a fun, easy to read story with a wonderful historical romance flare.

I received this ARC copy of Tempting The Pirate from Entangled Publishing, LLC - Scandalous in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for

This was a hot and spicy read. I liked the main characters and found James to be a great pirate and saviour to Charity. I loved reading about the adventures at sea and having the lead characters trapped together in the cabin was an illicit thrill. James was such a great character and I adored how he put Charity's needs above his own. The love scenes were really hot and exciting to read. The scurvy lot of pirates and Navy men added danger to the exciting plot. A book that is well worth reading.

This swashbuckling romantic adventure is the story of Charity and James. When Charity sneaks aboard a pirate ship in an effort to avoid an arranged marriage, she is found by James who is aboard the ship to find information on the whereabouts of his lost brother. As they sail the high seas they form an uneasy alliance that develops into a romantic attachment. But will it be enough to keep them together for the long haul?

I quite enjoyed this story! The setting was really well researched and brought the story to life, giving an inside view into what life on a pirate ship was really like. (Incidentally, I recently went to a Real Pirates exhibit (sponsored by National Geographic) at my local museum, so I found the details in this book to be very accurate. And I got to touch real pieces of eight! But I digress). I liked Charity's character - she's a fairly virtuous woman put in a despicable predicament, trying to maintain her dignity while at the same time realizing that she must change her attitude in order to survive. James was very engaging as the Captain of his own ship, willing to do whatever it takes to find his missing brother, including working on a pirate ship where his brother was last seen. They had some good chemistry between them that made their romance believable. The plot was fast paced and contained lots of action and adventure which made for a fun and entertaining read. 4 stars!

I really enjoyed this "out of the frying pan, into the fire" tale. The opening scene really drew me in. Charity has managed to escape her uncle's clutches, and his nefarious intent to drug her and marry her off to a fiend who is interested only in her dowry. She boards a ship she believes is part of the navy's fleet and discovers too late that she's stowed away on a pirate ship. She's discovered by James Lamont, who signed on as a pirate in order to search for his brother, who went missing after setting sail on one of their father's merchant ships.

James is a handsome rogue and a womanizer. he's not interested in entanglements, and Charity Goswick is definitely trouble. The two share an attraction, but they're at cross purposes Though Charity must depend upon James, she doesn't trust him . . . They're forced to join forces and danger surrounds them. No spoilers.

I found this story fast paced with plenty of tension, action and romance. Thoroughly enjoyable!

A charming read from the start! Charity's mission to outrun her uncle and soon to be husband is - dangerous in itself, pushes her into a situation with dire consequences. James Lamont is on a quest to find his missing brother. Flung together on the high seas in a read full of action, adventure with betrayal and seedy characters, with pirates galore and two leading characters of Charity and James at the forefront who enlighten and entertain throughout :D A heady mix of attraction and confrontations with shocking results and a powerful finale to elate readers. The perfect protector with the perfect heroine. :)

Fictionally a fun romance premise, but requires suspending disbelief

If the reader can slip into more of an R-rated Disney pirate story mode, this novel is enjoyable. However, I struggled to keep my brain off several times in the last third of the book.

The hero is a lovely person who treats the ladies well most of the time, unless he’s provoking them intentionally. The female protagonist is mostly clever and likable. She has definite spunk. Their relationship develops with fun teasing and sexual tension-building proximity. However, I would think they would need to keep their voices very low so as not to be overheard and discovered.

I wish the author had spent more time on developing the setting imagery at the end…surely the lovers could find a beautiful beach on the island? I know that romance novels tend to skip over mundane things like chamber pots, bathing, brushing teeth, etc., but when characters have been stowaways for quite some time, in major brawls and severely whipped and beaten, including a punch to the face, I just can’t see them mashing lips surrounded by dead and dying pirates. Or having passionate sex for the first time in a seedy tavern populated by unwashed whores and pirates. The “ick-factor” was off the charts for me.

I appreciated the excellent editing up until the last quarter of the book where the plot took a hasty violent turn and punctuation errors appeared. The bad guys are misogynistic, but only one has a relevant tidbit about his background trauma. The others are barely sketched in. They’re just jerks because they are jerks. They rape, punch women, drag them by their hair, etc.

The HEA epilogue of the book is a jump that is made too easily back to regular life without tying off an important loose end, which was the main driving force of the hero’s actions. This is disappointing, even if the next book explains what happens, because the hero lost his focus too handily.

Overall this is an escapist pirate fantasy-romance that mostly ignores real life horrors of the setting. Check your brain at the wharf before boarding!

I received a copy of this book, from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. In no way did this sway either my review or my rating!

I have so much love for a good historical romance. One that can sweep you away to a period in time and make you feel as if you're there right along with the characters. Normally though I tend to stick to the regency London period when it comes to these types of romances and I practically never read books about pirates. However for some reason, even though the word pirate is clear as day in the title, I gave the blurb a read and felt like I needed to read this book. The storyline was lots of fun and I highly enjoyed it!

I felt like Tamara Hughes did a really good job creating the setting for this book. I could picture everything unfolding quite clearly on the high seas. Including a dangerous storm with things and people being tossed about and backstabbing and possible threats of mutiny among the ranks. You really get the full pirate experience.

While by the end of the book I really liked both Charity and James, in the very beginning Charity wasn't one of my favorite characters. It wasn't her fault really though since one of the people who raised her was very "don't trust men" "men only want one thing" just very anti-male. Stuff like that feels annoying to me after a while especially when you're dealing with women of this time period who are very sheltered and naive to a point. She goes through a lot of changes throughout the book though and by the end she was kicking some major ass!

James's storyline is what had me sucked in the most. The lengths he goes to in order to find information and hopefully find his missing brother were heartwarming and admirable. He gives up a lot and puts himself in terrible danger as well. Though I do feel like there wasn't a complete feeling of closure when it comes to his story. I guess maybe it's just left open enough and we're supposed to use our imaginations? Oh well I know how it ends in my mind and I still found it highly entertaining.

Sometimes you take a chance and go outside of your usual likes and it can end up paying off like Tempting the Pirate did. Wasn't sure how else to state that because I don't exactly want to say out of my comfort zone because this wasn't a case of it being a threat of discomfort to read by any means, it just isn't my normal cup of tea so there was great relief and a bit of surprise with how much I liked this book.

Thanks go to Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book!

****A gifted copy was provided by the publisher for an honest review***

I love pirates and anything to do with a handsome man who deep down is a good guy but pretending to be a bad guy, I am all there for that story. So this is how I got into reading Tempting the Pirate…

Charity runs away to escape an arranged marriage to a nasty man which was set up by her odious Uncle when she slinks onto a ship without anyone seeing her. She thinks she is on a ship that will take her to a new place with no problem…well, she is on a ship that is full of pirates and she is definitely not going to be able to get away now.
James is on a pirate ship, pretending to be something he isn’t, in order to find his missing brother. He sees Charity and realizes this woman is bound to change his life in some way.
Both Charity and James are searching for something-Charity , she is seeking freedom and love- James is seeking his brother and in some sense, love.
James fought losing his heart to Charity when he would deliberately go out of way to make barbs, make himself look like the worst sort of pirate there way and never allay any of her fears. But at the same time, he would make sure she would get safely to places she needed to go and make sure none of the other pirates would hurt her.
WOW, the danger that was abounded and the twists that was woven thru the book. I really lived the mystery within. I also loved the passion between James and Charity along with the historical aspect. The only thing that was a minor glitch was I felt there should have been more of a back story of Charity’s life than what was there –but that is just my opinion. Great story and I can’t wait to read more from this author!

A little romance, a sexy pirate, what is not to love?

A swashbuckling historical romance about Charity, who is on the run and James, who pretends to be a pirate to find his brother. I found this story quite entertaining and enjoyable. I have not read this author before and thought she did excellent job with her writing and making characters that I could care about and wanted to learn more about. I really liked the time period and the setting of the story, can there ever be too much of pirates? The mix of romance and action/adventure was great and there was some great scenes in both areas. This is the first book in the series and wonder if the series will revolve around James and Charity or center around other characters we read about in this book?

With thrilling action and sweet romance, Tempting the Pirate was a great historical romance. I really liked this book and I thought it was a lovely read.

Charity frustrated me at first. She was so set in her negative thinking against men that she became shrewish to James even though he was honestly trying to help and literally the only thing standing between her and being used as an unwilling whore by the entire crew. But, after a few chapters, her thinking started to change and I started to like her better. Over the course of the book, she became stronger and more fair-minded. By the end, I thought she was great.

James was wonderful. He was honorable, sweet, and determined to protect him loved ones. He even set forth on a pirate ship just to find his missing brother and that was just one example of the lengths he would go to take care of the people he cared about. I thought he was simply adorable.

The romance was slow going at first but, as Charity and James got to know each other, things moved much faster with them. Though it didn't seem like it at first, them were a well-matched couple and I thought they were great together.

The plot was well paced and kept me interested all the way though. There were some thrills along the way as James and Charity tried to survive among pirates. I really enjoyed the story and, though I wish we had found out what happened with James' brother, I liked the ending.

Tempting the Pirate was an enjoyable read and a really lovely historical romance. Romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out.

Charity will do anything to escape the abusive and repulsive man that her uncle intends for to marry, even if that means putting her own life in danger. Caught on board a pirate ship Charity has no choice but to trust James, the man who makes her lose any sensibility.
James never imagined that he would find himself working on board a pirate ship but he will do anything he can in order to find his brother. Much to his surprise he never imagined stumbling upon Charity who just happens to be the most beautiful woman he’s ever laid eyes on.
In constant danger of being caught on board, James will do everything in his power to keep Charity safe from harm whether it be from the pirates on board or her fiancee. Action packed from the first page, Tamara Hughes gives us a wonderful historical romance that keeps the reader hooked from the first page.
Charity and James were fantastic characters who had both lost someone they loved and were just trying to find themselves. In between fighting for their lives we see both of them develop into the person they were meant to be as well as find their place with each other. I used to love Historical Romances but lately I’ve been in a funk and haven’t been able to find any that have really caught my eye. Tempting the Pirate had everything I want in a Historical Romance and kept my interest until the last page.
This is the perfect book for anyone looking for an exciting new read filled with pirates, temptation, and a feisty heroine.

ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Having read nothing by this author before I was a little apprehensive when I first received this book. When reading a new author you know its going to go one of two ways. I'm either going to really really dislike it or its going to be my next obsession. This book thankfully ended up being up the latter.

Charity ends up hiding away from her soon to be ex fiance in the storage hold of a ship that is unknowingly to her getting ready to head out to sea. James is searching the pirate ship looking for his kidnapped brother. Instead of the brother he wanted to find he ends up finding the stowaway. With a dangerous crew roaming the ship he sees that the only way he can help Charity is to hide her in his cabin. Soon cabin fever sets in for both of them and an unwanted bond begins to form in these unlikely of circumstances.

I was so thrilled to be able to read this creative and unique novel. James is the perfect mix of gentleman mixed with a sexy roguish alpha pirate. The steam and angst between these two is the perfect mix making the book that much more enjoyable.

I hope we don't have to much more time to wait before we get the next story. I sincerely hope that the next book with be about the other Lamont brother and his own journey.

In an attempt to flee from the cruel man that her uncle demands she wed, Charity stows aboard a pirate ship. James signs on as navigator to the same ship in hopes to gain information about his missing brother. When he finds Charity hiding in his cabin, he decides to help her by offering his secrecy and protection. Charity has been taught to fear men, but as James proves his trust and compassion, she begins warm up to him and they develop feelings for one another. When Charity is discovered by the pirates of the ship, they are torn apart and punishment is decreed. Now their lives and new found love is threatened.

I enjoyed this book; found it entertaining. In my opinion, there wasn't enough dialogue, especially from Charity. Tamara Hughes does a good job building suspense and for majority of the book, we never know what side the secondary charaters are on. Charity starts off as frigid but warms up and becomes much more likeable. James is more of a realistic man. He's not written as an invincible, fearless alpha male.

I plan to look for more books from this author, I only hope her other stories are a bit longer in length. My thanks to NetGalley for the pleasure of reading and reviewing Tempting the Pirate by Tamara Hughes.

Charity Goswick is on the run from her uncle and an unwanted marriage. Hope to escape he boards a ship to hide, not knowing that it was a pirate ship.

James Lamont is on the pirate ship to locate his missing brother. When he finds Charity, he does his best to hide her from the others on board.

Having been warned by her governess of the evil of men, Charity to leary of staying in James' cabin but she doesn't have any other options. As the two spend time together, their mutual attraction grows. Can they get to safely before they are found out?

This is my first book by Tamara Hughes and I did enjoy it. I always love a good pirate story and this one was pretty good.

I will say that I felt like almost everything James said to Charity for the first half of the book alluded to sex. I thought that was a little strange. He knew she was scared and apprehensive about being in a room with him, why did he need to go on and on about it...

Having said that I still look forward to the next book which will be about James' missing brother.

Captain James Lamont seeks his missing brother, David, a musician, and will stop at nothing to find him, including allowing himself to be coerced into work as a much-needed navigator on a pirate ship. When he discovers Charity Goswick, a beautiful and terrified stowaway in the hold, he spirits her away to his cabin because he realizes how in danger a woman on a ship can be. As the lone female on a ship, she is terribly vulnerable, but the principled and seductive James vows to protect her with his life.

But he is a man and he is very attracted to her. Sparks fly but he is not one to impose himself on a woman. Instead, he shows her only consideration in the little details: bringing her water to wash, giving her his bed—he installs himself in a hammock—and bringing her food. As well as keeping her locked safely in his cabin.

Charity Goswick has to get away. She needs to escape from her uncle and Captain Shevington. She is being forced to marry this cruel tyrant. She stows away on a ship. James Lamont finds her hiding place as he searches for his brother. What is a lady to do when she's at sea with a pirate? Tempting the Pirate is filled with romance and adventure. Charity is such a feisty woman. I loved that she stood up for herself and fought for what she wants. James is a wonderful hero. His compassion is touching. He will protect Charity. I fell in love with this brave man. The battle of wills soon leads to love and trust. The secondary characters are a powerful bunch. The Judge personifies evil and does his best to kill both lovers. The setting was perfect. The isolation added to the danger. I'm looking forward to learning David Lamont's story. Tamara Hughes did a great job. She had me hooked from the first page with this well plotted story.

This was a riveting book once I got engrossed in it. The way James took care of Charity was very sweet and endearing. Which he did with a little unwanted flirtation, but that made it fun for the reader. He was very refreshing a character from the other pirates in the book. And Charity was a strong female character who wouldn't let the men walk over her. I liked her spunk. Together they made a good team in a time where that was not acceptable. The story flowed at a nice pace and ended in a way for continuation. Not for James and Charity per say, although I would like to see more from them (if Charity's last sentence were to come true), but of a different aspect sub story from this book.

And I did get a little soft spot from Whip.

It took a little while for me to warm up to the characters and the story. In the beginning it seemed a little haphazard and the heroine was a little to naive (and wordy). Any how as the story progressed I started to like Charity and James. Their banter became witty and the attraction between them was apparent and understandable. James treated Charity with respect regardless of her man hating views and his flirtation was funny because it flustered her. The last hundred pages of the book were non-stop action and it was amazing. Lovely book and I can't wait to read David's story.

I always love a man who's willing to offer his services, "you're sure? My kisses have been known to soothe and heal." And he'd be most willing to tend to her finger with a kiss, a nuzzle, a caress." I loved James for a pirate he was so gentle and caring and just sweet on Charity, "let it be known that I have no regrets." He swept his lips over hers once again. "You are the most desirable woman I've ever met. If I must be distracted from my purpose, I can think of no better reason." This book was an adventure and James was just the cherry on top.

I took the high seas on this swashbuckling tale. Charity will do anything to avoid an arranged marriage including stowing away on a pirate ship. James is on the ship to discover what happened to his brother and instead finds Charity in need of his help. I enjoy the story as well as the romance between James and Charity. The story is well rounded. A good plot and the characters are engaging. I enjoyed it a lot.
